Unity In Diversity!

I have been to all White churches where I have been the minority. I have also been to all Black churches where the few Whites that have come in have been in the minority.

They say that Sunday morning service is the most segregated day of the week. Regrettably that is true. What I have noticed in the church world today, is that we have a very difficult time handling diversity in the church.

The word of God is clear in that it teaches the entire church body to be unified as one. To walk in love with one another and to be enjoined as one.

The scripture is one thing, but to practice that in everyday life is a challenge we all face. The practical application in everyday life is what we find to be difficult.

Americanized Christianity:

One of the hindrances to having unity in diversity is Americanized Christianity. This unspoken ideology that when you become a Christian in America, you throw away your culture and begin to embrace Whiteness so to speak.

You no longer listen to Hip hop music, you try to clean up your slang, and a lot of the things that makes you authentically you, and you began to change to fit into this new sect of people.

It’s almost like when you get saved in America you go from being black to being white. I am speaking from my own personal perspective.

So when addressing this very real issues of unity and diversity, how can we ever hope to have unity if you cannot accept me for who I am. If your idea of unity is for me to be just like you, you have a very skewed idea of what unity is.

Unity is not Uniformity:

Unity says that I can be uniquely who God created me to be but still functionally a member of the body, but Uniformity is copy and paste disciples. Uniformity is sameness, its exactness.

We are not called to be copies. This is not what Apostle Paul had in mind when he said “Follow me as I follow Christ”.

Disagreeing with someone is not a sin. Diversity is not a sin. Being different then another person is not a sin, but Uniformity is. Uniformity robs God of who God created you to be.

Whites are viewed in America as the superior race. Because of that, patriotism is a lot of time infused with their faith. Politics is a lot of times infused with their faith.

Donald Trump in the Evangelical sphere has become almost like a deity. You will see certain Christians defend Donald Trump more than they would Jesus. We have Donald Trump apologist now.

We have Pastors that will ostracize you for speaking against Donald Trump. For disagreeing with anything he does. Diversity is being able to disagree with one another peacefully.

I am not expected to agree with everything you say and think. I have my own mind, my own thoughts, and opinions. I would hope that in the church of all places I can feel safe to express my perspective without losing friends.

Without people whispering about me or calling me a liberal.

There are Christian nationalist that promote conservative, and republican agendas behind the pulpit and if you speak against anyone of those views you’re condemned by the congregation.

Scroll to Continue

We can never have unity if we cannot have honest conversation about real issues and be okay with the fact that we do not agree in the end. We can still be friends even though we have a difference of opinion .

Can you accept all that I am? Is the only thing on your mind, how to change me? How to make me more like you. When I found religion I became this very self-righteous, African American conservative.

I rejected my culture and tried to fit into to this new group of people, but it was not real. I now understand that I do not have to change who I am to be a part of a community. Aside from sin, if its sin that’s another conversation.

But my manner of speaking, and talking, and food taste, music, art, and political views do not have to reflect yours or mirror yours in any way. We are two completely different people and that’s okay.

So how can we have Unity in Diversity?

We have to be able to accept each other for who we are. In the book of Genesis the bible says that Adam and Eve were " Naked and without shame". That should be the goal of every evangelical Church.

A community of diverse, multi ethnic people that can be naked before each other but without shame. They can show all there frailty, all their mistakes, all their culture, everything that makes them, who they are and not be ashamed.

An environment where all walks of life can come together in Love and acceptance. The church is not supposed to be segregated and the only way we can grow and evolve in the body is to be able to have Unity with diversity.

Every one you meet will not share your views on every subject but can you still love them? Are you able to still accept them for who they are?

I pray the Church Christ paid for with his own blood will learn to come together in the name of Love.

One of the best decisions I ever made was to begin preaching in a Vietnamese Missionary church. Diversity is a pleasure that came through grace from God. It must be celebrated lest we insult Christ.

So right that church is in us but community in a physical church is basically required.

Our mixed race son is such a gift.

Thanks for the comment! Means a lot to read that! And you are right, we won't all worship the same but we are unified in Christ!

Tony Muse from Texas, USA on March 20, 2018:

You wrote this from the heart, for that I commend you. I have witnessed what you have written of, I would call it "the cult of Donald Trump", primarily on social media. Those who fall into this category tend to be be white, Evangelical Zionists. Our country needs prayers right now because I see our country becoming more divided than united, it's a scary thing.

It is not our culture or social heritage that we are to abandon when we follow Christ, but our sinful lives and carnal nature. Every culture has its strengths and weaknesses, as we become more in tune with the nature of God, we will be convicted of what things to let go of. We must be willing to let God mold us into our full potential.

I doubt that there will ever come a day when all churches worship in the same style, and that is OK. Each culture will naturally gravitate towards what it is accustomed to and comfortable with. As long as worship is SINCERE and is praising God and not man, I believe that it is good. But, that can create a very fine line as it is easy to give adoration to the accomplishments of man.

We are "one in Christ" through our belief in the Son of God, that doesn't mean that we should all look and act alike.

The narrow way speaks of the exclusivity of Christ and we can go back and fourth all day on this subject call me if you want to get into real honest conversation 623-522-1338 just text before you call. I don't have the time I would like to go back and fourth on the comments section.

Unfortunately you answered as I expected, defending the false church system instead of reading and studying what I wrote with the aid of the Holy Spirit (not the teachings of man) and then responding with valid questions/comments.

I never said anything about forsaking the gathering together. Nor did I say not to do that , but I said not to do it the way the church system does. Each is to have something to say as the Spirit lead. The is no scripture to tell anyone to come, sit and let a man ordained man teach his ideas of God. Scripture (Jesus Christ Himself)says to each individual to GO and make disciples of Christ In this age the Holy Spirit infills those that are Christ's and it was sent to teach us all things according to scripture.

As for Ephesian, he GAVE them to the church (people not a building) to be used as tools to as it says "to equip the PEOPLE for the work of the ministry. According to Paul those given to the people are to be BONDSERVANTS (they were not appointed as leaders) and examples not rulers.

Paul appointed elders and deacons, not pastor rulers, Christ made it clear there are to be No rules but Christ in His church.

Further I said nothing that would negate Acts or any other scripture correctly understood

As for David, he lived in a different age and under a different covenant so he is not a valid example here.

The church system which you are supporting is a false copy of church system the last age that Jesus finished and did away with

i SAID NOTHING ABOUT NOT BEING INVOLVED WITH OTHER DISCIPLES I said not to be involved with man led organizations as does scripture. Read the scriptures about DO NOT BE DECEIVED and see who the deceives are.

Scripture is clear in the age there is no clergy and no one has to go anywhere to meet with God, in fact if you cannot meet with God whenever and wherever you are then you can not be a disciple of Christ because all that are really disciples of Christ are filled with the Holy Spirit of God and Christ and are led by the Spirit of God.

You have surely validated the scripture that few will find the narrow gate and difficult path because they are deceived by man and his ways that are listed in the scripture warnings. so sad

Stefen Beasley (author) from Glendale on March 19, 2018:

First thanks for taking the time to read my article it means a lot to, and thanks for leaving a comment.

I challenge in a few points of doctrine, I agree that the church is living flesh which makes diversity so much more difficult because its not just coming to a building and calling it church, but church is actual people with flaws, and difference coming together in unity hopefully.

I challenge your doctrine here, firstly the word of God says in Hebrews 10:25 25 "Do Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching."

Speaking of the Church, gather together as the church. Do not forsake the body or the community as you have said we should.

Also Ephesians 1:11-13 " 11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ."

Christ appointed leaders in the body or the church depending on your choice of words to build of the body of Christ. We go to church not because were serving two masters as you stated but because the church is where the body of Christ is built. God put in place pastors and leaders to build up the body.

Apostle Paul planted several churches if you study the book of acts and left Pastors and leaders in charge. Paul served 1 year in a local church before his church sent him out as an apostle.

Acts 13:1-3 "Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a lifelong friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them. Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off."

How is that Paul needed to be submitted to t leaders in the church and we do not. You said church made Christians is not disciples, so based on you doctrine Paul was not a disciple, or any of the apostle in the Church of Antioch. Peter, James, John, ect. None of them was disciple.

Or David who said I was glad when they said go into the house of God.

Acts 9:31-3 " 31 Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers. "

The Church is spoken of all through out the new testament.

Lastly I will explain your point that you just have to follow Christ and not be involved in a body or a community. that is false docrine not supported in God's word. Even Jesus asked the disciples to stay and watch and pray with him because he needed the support of other believers.

Proverbs 18 " Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire;

he breaks out against all sound judgment. A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion."

1 Corinthian 1:11-12 " For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollo's,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.”

A lot of people look at this text and think yes I can just follow Christ and not any man, or church system or organization. That is not what Paul was saying, all these men in this text had sinned. the man that said I follow Paul, or Apollos or Cephas were dividing the body of Christ which was the sin being addressed.

They were disjoining the body to fit there own preference. And the last man was worse of all he said " I follow Christ" in other words I need no spiral accountability, I do what I please, I am my own man, I only follow Christ.

Which mean no one could give this man wise instruction because he only follows Christ, but Christ put leaders in authority to guard our soul. The word of God speaks about church leaders being over us, and us submitting in love to our leaders.

There are no isolated Christians, unless your in a place where the church world is just in chaos which is not the case I America there are several faithful brothers you can be attached to that will help you grow.

Men that reject the church usually have a probably with authority, they do not want to be told anything, but a man that tells you the truth loves you.

"Only a real disciple of Christ can make disciples of Christ and a real disciple of Christ follows Christ alone, no other man"

You contradict your self here because you said a real disciple follows only Christ but then you say only a real disciple can make disciples. How can you make disciples and expect a man to follow you if you just said that real disciples follow no man. Except Paul a man said " Follow me as I follow Christ!" Either Paul was not a real disciples or Timothy was not based on your doctrine.

"scripture tells us very clearly that the only man that died for you is your head, not some man anointed man who according to the warnings will come, and has come, saying they are his representative but in fact are not."

Another one of your quotes: Going to church does not mean we think our Pastor died for us, on the contrary our Pastor preaches that Christ died for us according to scripture that exhort us to preach Gods word.

Paul planted churches but never claimed to be God like you suppose we assume. That is not what church is. I am not sure where your getting your knowledge of the church form but it is not a correct truth of what the church represents.

Also you mentioned why we call ourselves Christians and yes it was said a mockery but it was said because they had such zeal for Christ. Besides the title does not make you follow of Christ, a Christians, a believer or whatever you want to call it. Having faith in Christ, understanding that were justified by grace through faith in Christ.

I am not saved because I go church I am saved because of what Christ did but an outworking of my faith that shows I believe is my involvement in the church. and a lot of other things, a change of heart , the fruit of the sprit.

You should read study church history before you dismiss it. There was a welsh revival that broke out in 1904 under the ministry of Evan Roberts and God came down, and the city was brought repentance it started in a church, had can you condemn a practice that led men to Christ an entire city.

I see men every Sunday lay there life down to Christ, the door are open for people, to serve people.

DO not war against the church , ask God to lead you to the right one, submit yourself you Godly leadership and you will begin to grow. Your case is not doctrinally sound and cannot be supported In the word of God. I say this in love brother God belss you. And I wish you the best moving forward in life. God loves you.

charlie from From Kingdom of God living on Planet earth in between the oceans on March 19, 2018:

I agree with most of what you say and Though you did not say so I believe you do see the problem but are not able to recognize it because of your "church" indoctrination.

First, you must understand the church system that you think is the church of Christ--IS NOT THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST. THE LORD OF THIS AGE.

The church of Jesus Christ is not made of bricks and mortar and pastors and other man anointed by man. It is made up of LIVING STONE, flesh and blood stones.

"church" made christians are not disciples of Christ. They follow man anointed by man. Disciples of Christ FOLLOW NO MAN BUT THE MAN JESUS CHRIST. Here are the words of Jesus Christ Himself telling how to regain the eternal life Adam forfeited in the garden.

Only a real disciple of Christ can make disciples of Christ and a real disciple of Christ follows Christ alone, no other man, no organization, only the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit of God. No false jesus, no false holy spirit, as Jesus warned us would come to deceive us.

Matt 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

scripture tells us very clearly that the only man that died for you is your head, not some man anointed man who according to the warnings will come, and has come, saying they are his representative but in fact are not. Every "church" and member of clergy serve their "church" , denomination or what ever but they truly serve the man in charge not Christ the Lord. Scripture is clear NO MAN CAN SERVE TWO MASTERS, YOU CANNOT SERVE YOUR "CHURCH" AND CHRIST, YOU EITHER SERVE ONE OR THE OTHER. Every man that serves Christ alone is a BONDSERVANT of Christ and can only serve HIM.

1 Cor 11:2-3 Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you. 3 But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

Luke 16:13 "No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon."

Look it up in Strong's, the root of the word christian that is not part of scripture, it is just says that the name christian was given by people in Antioch, says that it was an epithet, in other words they were mocking the disciples of Christ. NEVER does scripture say to call anyone a christian.
