Unexpected Loss #17

Over three decades ago I become interested in the Bible, having drank from the heavenly cup once, I have not been tired to drink more

When she started for the searching

Though when she started for the searching was not clearly spelt out by Jesus, but she perhaps would have started before it was dark, and this has taken her time, when she could not find the money and it was getting dark, that was when she decides to light a candle to search for it.

Why she Lights Candle

She lights candle because of the following

a) She lights candle because it is dark, and could not see very well. The ancient houses in this part of the world have small windows that allows is few rays of light, and when the sun is going to the west about to set, the illumination in the room would be very little, compared to when the sun is high up in the sky. This may be the time during which she was searching for the coin, and she could not see well because of limited rays of light, thence, she decides to light the candle to have proper view of the room.

The Shunammite woman has advised her husband that they should construct a room like that for the prophet in 2 Kings 4: 9-11.

b) Some Portions of Rooms are Poorly Illumined: She lights candle because there are some places in the room that is darker than other places even during the day time, example of such is under the bed (bushel). In case the silver coin has rolled there, and she could not see well, she decides to light the candle to have proper view of the room.

Methods of Searching

We shall discover from this parable the means she employed in searching for the missing coin, which many people too use in searching for the missing thing in the world.

Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? (Luke 15:8)

1. Haphazardly at First

Because of the position of her mind at the initial phase of discovering that the money is missing she started seeking for it haphazardly, tasking her brain of where she probably have kept the money. she must have done this for minutes if not hours. However after this painstaking effort with no solution, she decides to calm herself down.

2. Calmed Herself Down

When she could not find the missing coin when searching for it haphazardly, she calms herself down to search for it patiently.

3. She Lights Candle

Since she could not find it at the places she initially thought she would get the silver from, she has to light candle to be able to see well things under the bed and at other corners of the room that rays of light do not get to properly. The lighted candle gives her proper view of every place, by which she removes doubt and wrong assumptions. On the matter of salvation we have to remove doubts and wrong assumptions we must be sure of whom we believe in.

4. Sweeping the Floor

She did what is needful for her to find the missing coin. Her sweeping the floor shows that she wants to ascertain that the missing coin is not hiding anywhere within the room.

5. Diligent

She searches for it not haphazardly again but carefully. In Greek diligent is “ἐπιμελῶς” which when romanticized becomes epimelōs (pronounced as ep-ee-mel-oce') which means carefully. Now she was no longer searching for it haphazardly, but she is taking her time to search for the missing coin. She did not give in until she locates the missing coin.

Outcome of the searching

The woman did not give up the search and when darkness wants to be a stumbling block to her finding out the missing coin, she lights a candle to be able to access every nooks and crannies of the room.

And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost. (Luk 15:9)

1. She finds it: At last after minutes or hours of searching for the missing coin, she finds it.

2. She was happy: She was also happy for finding the missing coin when she finds it and had to show her happiness by telling the people she initially have told before that she has found the missing coin.

3. Erasing Untoward Thoughts in her heart: Different thoughts that may have crossed her heart before, as she was suspecting people living with her and her neighbors, but that thought was been erased when she found the missing coin, then she knows that those people were clean, but before then, they were suspects, none of them was clean except her. Finding the missing coin erases the negative thought from her heart and she could freely relate with them again thence she could call them all to felicitate with her for finding the missing coin.

Reasons for rejoicing and conclusion in the next article.
