Truth About Cain & Abel: Authority of God

Sometimes writers distance themselves from religious subjects. Religion is still taboo to speak about. Read about it instead.

This is the third installment of the sad tale regarding Cain and Abel. In the other two articles, I wrote about the other children of Adam and Eve, and the apostasy of Cain with many of those children. This article will focus on the actions Cain took to become the person of infamy he is today in turning away from God.

The Pride of Cain

What Came Before

Truth About Cain & Abel: Cain, the Hope? Adam and even taught their children the gospel, but apparently, the serpent in the garden, Satan, was not finished with Adam and Eve. Since he could not tempt them away from God to worship him, he did so with the other humans.

Moses describes the path that Cain took that pulled him away from the Gospel and his birthright. He hearkened to his elder brothers instead of listening to the Lord. As a holder of the priesthood and having been trained in the functions of that priesthood by Adam, Cain knew the proper offerings to make as prescribed in the Law of the Lord.

Abel, also a holder of the priesthood and the new birthright child performed offerings unto the Lord. Because Abel did so as instructed by his father Adam, his offering was accepted by the Lord. Abel was a tender of sheep and therefore offered up of the firstling or firstborn of his flock as prescribed.

The Priesthood

Adam received the authority to act in the name of God while he lived in the Eden Garden called the priesthood. Even before that according to Joseph Smith, the first prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Adam had authority given to act from God. Said Joseph,

The Priesthood was first given to Adam; he obtained the First Presidency, and held the keys of it from generation to generation. He obtained it in the Creation, before the world was formed, as in Gen. 1:26, 27, 28. He had dominion given him over every living creature.1

At that time, the name of this priesthood was called the Holy Priesthood, after the Order of the Son of God according to modern scripture found in Doctrine and Covenants 107:2. The priesthood authority comes from Jesus Christ under the direction of God the Father. As Creator, Jesus Christ is the source of authority used for all of God's work on the Earth. As the ancient King Benjamin prophesied, "And he shall be called Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Father of heaven and earth, the Creator of all things from the beginning; and his mother shall be called Mary" (Mosiah 3:8). With this authority, Adam received the rights to act in the name of God and passed it on to his righteous posterity. Cain did not continue in that righteousness, but Abel did. Joseph Smith stated that "Cain also being authorized to offer sacrifice, but not offering it in righteousness, was cursed, "1 ( a subject explored discussed in another article in this series).

Abel's Offering

Satan knew that Cain had no desire to offer a proper priesthood service unto the Lord, but he instructed Cain to offer to the Lord. Instead of going to Abel and asking for an animal as he knew he should have to offer a proper offering unto the Lord, Cain took of his fields and offered to the Lord.

On the surface such and offering my seem reasonable to the uninitiated. Cain would offer the best of his substance to God. As an authorized holder of the authority of God and student of the proper way to exercise this authority, Cain changed the ordinances of God with his satanic decision to offer of his fields.

Cain's Offering

truth-about-the-cain-and-abel

Cain may have reasoned that since God accepted Abel's offering He should accept his offering as well. When his offering was rejected he was angry and hurt. Instead of seeing the rejection of the offering because it was performed incorrectly using the wrong items, Cain saw it as a rejection of him. "Now Satan knew this, and it pleased him. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell" (Moses 5:21).

God chastised Cain for his priestcraft, his refusal to perform ordinances correctly and tried to explain to him when He saw that Cain was wroth the severity of the terrible situation Cain faced if he did not hearken; Said He,

Why art thou wroth? Why is thy countenance fallen?If thou doest well, thou shalt be accepted. And if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door, and Satan desireth to have thee; and except thou shalt hearken unto my commandments, I will deliver thee up, and it shall be unto thee according to his desire. And thou shalt rule over him;

For from this time forth thou shalt be the father of his lies; thou shalt be called Perdition; for thou wast also before the world. And it shall be said in time to come—That these abominations were had from Cain; for he rejected the greater counsel which was had from God; and this is a cursing which I will put upon thee, except thou repent. Moses 5:22-25

God warned Cain that he was at the door of destruction because of his actions. God did not walk away from Cain, but Cain walked away from God. After speaking to Him, "Cain rejected the greater counsel and received the curse that God said would come upon him. "And Cain was wroth, and listened not any more to the voice of the Lord, neither to Abel, his brother, who walked in holiness before the Lord" Moses 5:6.

Cain rejected God and anyone who would try to counsel him. Satan, "Yea, that same being who did plot with Cain... and his followers from that time forth" (Helamen 6:27), had achieved his design with Cain by turning the birthright son completely away from God and over to him. Pride had swelled in Cain's heart and he would not be corrected.

Moses records that Cain now had ammunition to plot against his brother Abel. Satan could not gain the same hold onto Abel he did for Cain, so he had to find another way to get rid of the birthright child.

Satan Still Wants to be God

If he could not win the battle in heaven, Satan wanted the next best thing. He wanted to rule the world of mortals. Satan wanted the birthright sons savagely!

Finally, Satan had the adulation that he sought from the beginning. His desire to hurry the process of Adam and Eve into producing children so that he could lead them away was complete--just the beginning, however.

Satan intended to use deception and cunning to win the souls of all the children of Adam and Eve away from God employing his advantage of using the veil over the minds of these people of their pre-mortal life.

Satan wants to be worshiped as a god. Having a birthright son, Abel, as heir to Prince Adam frightened Satan. The possibility that he could lose one of his followers to the persuasion of a minister of Adam's commission, the archangel Michael and the men who escorted him out of heaven and cast him to the earth, spurned him with indignation and avidity.

If he could not tempt away Abel as he did with Cain, he would employ other means to thwart God's plans to redeem His people. Abel would cease to be a leader one way or the other so that Satan could enjoy his "godship" and adulation while reveling in God-directed castigation at the lack of God's followers.
