Who, What, and How

Who would forsake God? What are they forsaking when they choose to forsake the Creator of the universe? How can a person avoid forsaking God?

These are the questions that are before us? The good thing is that the answers to these questions are also available for us in the Word of God.

Who Chooses this Path?

The Bible uses some descriptive words to tell the student of the Bible who it is that makes the choice to forsake God.

  • The Idolaters
  • The Wicked
  • The Backsliders

These words give us a first glimpse of the ones who are going down the wrong path in life.

A Heartfelt Prayer

O God, help us not to despise or oppose what we do not understand.

Question #1

Does the Word of God tell who forsakes God?

It most certainly does. Here are three groups of people that forsake God.

1. The Idolaters Forsake God

God Declares Man's Guilt

(1 Samuel 8:8) According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee. (KJV)

2. The Wicked Forsake God

(Deuteronomy 28:20) The LORD shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken me. (KJV)

The Word of God is Like a Hammer

(Jeremiah 23:29) Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? (KJV)

(Jeremiah 23:29) Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? (KJV)

3. The Backsliders Forsake God

(Jeremiah 15:6) Thou hast forsaken me, saith the LORD, thou art gone backward: therefore will I stretch out my hand against thee, and destroy thee; I am weary with repenting. (KJV)

What is Backsliding?

It is turning from God. (1 Kings 11:9) And the LORD was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the LORD God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice, (KJV)

It is leaving the first love. (Revelation 2:4) Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. (KJV)

It is departing from the simplicity of the gospel.

  • (2 Corinthians 11:3) But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. (KJV)
  • (Galatians 3:1-3) O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? (KJV)
  • (Galatians 5:4) Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. (KJV)
  • (Galatians 5:7) Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? (KJV)

Question #2

Does the Bible tell us what areas are forsaken when a person chooses to forsake God?

Absolutely. The Bible gives answers to many important questions that we may have in this lifetime.

Four Things Forsaken

When a person forsakes God there are four things that are forsaken in the process.

1. When a person forsakes God they forsake the house of God.

(2 Chronicles 29:6) For our fathers have trespassed, and done that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD our God, and have forsaken him, and have turned away their faces from the habitation of the LORD, and turned their backs. (KJV)

2. When a person forsakes God they forsake the covenant of God.

(Deuteronomy 29:25) Then men shall say, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt: (KJV)

(1 Kings 19:10) And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. (KJV)

(Jeremiah 22:9) Then they shall answer, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD their God, and worshipped other gods, and served them. (KJV)

(Daniel 11:30) For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant. (KJV)

3. When a person forsakes God they forsake the commandments of God.

(Ezra 9:10) And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments, (KJV)

4. When a person forsakes God they forsake the right way.

(2 Peter 2:15) Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; (KJV)

Question #3

How does forsaking God affect a person?

There are negative consequences that follow the act of forsaking God. Therefore, we should strive to always stay close to the LORD in our daily walk so that we do not find ourselves on a path away from the one that sacrificed His only begotten Son for the payment of mankind's sins.

1. Forsaking God Leads Men to Follow their own Devices

(Jeremiah 2:13) For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water. (KJV)

What are We Clinging To?

2. Forsaking God Brings Unreasonableness and Ingratitude

(Jeremiah 2:5-6) Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain? Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt? (KJV)

There is Deliverance for All Who Will Believe In Jesus Christ for Salvation.

A Special Blessing

(Romans 8:1) There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (KJV)

Forsaking God Brings Confusion

(Jeremiah 17:13) O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters. (KJV)

God is Not the Author of Confusion

(1 Corinthians 14:33) For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. (KJV)

— The King James Bible

When a person forsakes God they are heading down a path that will only bring sorrows and heartache to their life.

However, there is time while on this side of eternity to return back to God and find revival in a heart that has turned away from God.

There is time to come to God as Savior and King while a person still has breath in their body. That day may not last if it is continually put off, so the best advice that I can give is this: turn to God for salvation if none is present. If the fires of revival need to be rekindled, then now is the moment to do that through prayer.

Don't Wait

(James 4:14) Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. (KJV)
