Gemstones are often used as a remedy in astrology for they are considered to bring peace, prosperity and happiness to the wearer. Wearing favorable gemstones bring name, fame and power to the person wearing it. Our ancient scriptures also describe gems as powerful agents which can influence human fate by inducing positive energy and minimizing the negative energy which causes sickness and suffering.

However, there are many important things that one should know and take care of before wearing a gemstone. For example, which gemstone to wear, what should be the weight of the stone, what is the auspicious time to wear a stone, how to check whether the stone is favourable or not etc. All these things should be considered before wearing a gemstone to avoid any adverse effect on your life. Special precaution should be taken in case of wearing gemstones with strong energies like – Blue Sapphire (‘Neelam') and Yellow Sapphire (‘Pukhraj'). One should wear a gem only after consulting an expert astrologer.

To check the suitability of the gemstone, one should keep it under the pillow for at least three days and if there are no nightmares then it means that the gemstone will leave a positive effect. But if one sees scary dreams or nightmares then it is means that the gemstone is not suitable and one should avoid wearing it.

These gems have life in them: their colors speak, say what words fail of.

Here are some fundamental rules to be kept in mind before wearing any gem:

  • The gems of the planets having the lordship of 6th, 8th & 12th house should not be worn as it will bring hurdles and failures to the native.
  • The gemstones of the ascendant and the trine are generally considered good for the native.
  • Gemstones related to a planet having maximum Kasht Phala and minimum Isht Phala in Shadbala and having less than 3 bindus in BAV Ashtakvarga should not be worn.
  • Gemstone of the weakest planet in Shadbala should not be worn.
  • Two gemstones of different planets having mutual bitter enmity should not be worn together.
  • The gems to be worn should be of the prescribed weight plus .25 unit. For e.g. If the prescribed weight of Ruby is 5 rattis then it should be of 5.25 rattis.
  • The gems should be worn on the prescribed finger.
  • The gemstone should be worn only in ‘Shukla Paksh' (i.e. in the bright half of the moon). Irrespective of the gemstone that is to be worn, it is important that it may be worn only in the bright lunar phase of the moon.
  • One should wear the gemstone according to the prescribed muhurta. The day should be as recommended by the astrologer consulted. The stone should be worn in one or maximum two hours after sun rise. The preferable time is morning 6 to 8.
  • Gemstone should be worn after chanting of the prescribed mantra.
  • • Puja (worship) should be performed on the prescribed day and muhurta before wearing the gem. Name, parentage and gotra of the person should be spoken to give it recognition.
  • The gemstone once worn by a native should not be transferred or handed over to someone else for wearing.
  • Before wearing, the gemstone should be kept in panchamrit: milk, honey, Gangajal (sacred water of the holy Ganges), curd and ghee (clarified butter).
  • The gemstone must touch the skin from backside.
  • Damaged gemstones should not be worn as they will not only be ineffective but may also prove harmful to the wearer.
  • Gemstones should be worn in the prescribed metal.
  • Gems should be accepted as the blessing of the planet which it represents.
  • The ring carrying the stone should be such that the stone touches your skin. One should not take out the ring out of the finger unless and until it is really required.

The rarest things in the world, next to a spirit of discernment, are diamonds and pearls.

— Jean de la Bruyere

The most important point to keep in mind before wearing a gemstone is that there should be no expectation of a magic or sudden gains from the stone. Life does not transform immediately after wearing a gemstone. The gemstone only helps in clearing obstacles or in providing the necessary inner strength to overcome them.

Oh yes. The beads are the most potent tool for a devotee. Why fear when God is near?

manatita44 from london on February 26, 2020:

Nice one! I had forgotten the beads. Yes, I have them! They stay on my shrine for Japa every morning and evening, but sometimes I wear them to poetry with my Kurta and pyjamas. With the additional scarf, takiya and necklace, I feel fearless. Haha. Hari Om! Hare Krishna!

Shaloo Walia (author) from India on February 26, 2020:

Thanks Manatita. I wear Tulsi beads around my neck and a blue sapphire ring. When I tested blue sapphire before wearing, I had Krishna in my dream, so I was convinced that the gem is going to be auspicious for me.

manatita44 from london on February 26, 2020:

A lot here and much more on gem stones than I anticipated. I wear only a copper bracelet and an amulet of Guruji around my neck. I had something tested for energy once and kept it under the pillow, but generally I don't go this way.

Interesting info! At least their colours are bright and beautiful!
