Theology is in everything. Theology is everywhere. Theology is all around us whether we call it theology or not. Whether good or bad there is something to be learned from every situation from God's point of view.

It is amazing that many people think theology is limited to a Sunday morning sermon or a Wednesday night Bible Study. However, theology is all around every minute of every single day.

Theology: Defined

In its broad sense, theology is the systematic study of God, the nature of God, as well as religious beliefs. In a general sense, theology is about God and His divine attributes.

To put it in its simplest form, theology is one's personal view of God. One does not have to be a theologian or a biblical scholar to see God in action through His people, through His creation, and the many things that go on in the world.

God is Omnipresent

God is in everything: the wind, the terrible storms, the sunny days, and even the bad hair days. God is omnipresent. That means there is no place where God is not. In fact, God is there when you get there and God is there when you leave a place and also there when you get to another place. The amazing thing is that no matter where you are, God is there because He is Jehovah Shammah.

In all of the 24 verses of Psalm 139, David writes of God's omnipresence. The psalmist emphasizes that there is no place he can go without God being there.

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast. (Psalm 139:7-10)

"Where Is God?" Field Trip

When I was in seminary, my theology class went on a field trip around the City of Richmond, Virginia. The class was divided into five groups and each team went to certain places "looking for God." Naturally, you would think the places were limited to churches, temples, synagogues, and other places of worship, but that was not the case.

The teams went to parks, beaches, playgrounds, restaurants, and businesses, including executive offices and break rooms. Of course, the class had permission to visit those private places and speak to the people there. At the end of the day, all teams returned to the classroom to discuss and compare their findings of the "Where Is God?" project.

During the field trip, the teams did not ask company executives how God was in the workplace. We were careful not to discuss God or religion. We were to look and listen.

We looked around to see positive posters and pictures on the wall, how employees interacted with one another, how the offices were decorated and how the people responded to us. Believe it or not, you can tell a lot about people by being around them for such a short period of time.

Theology All Around Us

Theology is in movies, Broadway plays, Shakespeare's writing, in songs and it definitely should be in every sermon that is preached.

Theology is all around us, even in our entertainment. I am reminded about how much theology is in The Lion King. While it is not advertised as a religious work, one cannot help but see numerous theological concepts from the beginning to the end whether one watches the movie or sees the Broadway play.

Some television quiz shows have questions about the Bible and theology. However, it is surprising how little some contestants know about the subjects. A question on a popular quiz show was: "What was Jesus' hometown?" A contestant said, "Lazarus." He showed signs of embarrassment when his competitor got the question right by saying "Nazareth." Lazarus is the name of a person in the Bible while Nazareth is a place.

The Bottom Line

Hopefully, this article will help you realize that theology is everywhere because God is everywhere. He is in the mundane things you do every day from the time you get up and have your first cup of coffee in the morning until you go to bed at night. Even when you go to sleep, God watches over you because He never slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121:3b-4).

The bottom line is simple:

Theology is EVERYWHERE because God is EVERYWHERE!
