How Christians Handle Sexual Abuse

The Duggar Sexual Abuse Report

Here what I wrote 7 years ago: One word, "yeech". Has anyone seen this show? They are so icky. Always smiling and patient, with 19 kids yet. Apparently, they are supporting themselves and their children and are not on the public dole. Their children are well-mannered and behaved and I have never seen Mr. or Mrs. Duggar ruffled, harried, unpleasant, and scowling; or smacking or yelling at their kids - in other words they are just not normal like the rest of us parents who are on occasion harried and unpleasant. Who scowl, yell, and been known to smack one of our kids when they had it coming. I keep waiting for one of them to snap and just reach around and slap one of those kids, or scream, or yell or something - anything that will let me think they are normal and will not snap at any moment and go on a rampage and burn down the countryside.

I figure a pregnant (for the frigging 20th time) Mrs. Duggar will let loose one night when Mr. Duggar comes siddling over on her side of the bed and starts rubbing on her leg or something. Maybe she'll pull some axe out from under the covers and give him 40 whacks or pull out a pair of scissors and do a Lorena Bobbitt and cut it off for him. Maybe she could do a "Basic Instinct" number and stab him about 60 times with an icepick.

I mean she is doing all the work. He's having all the fun. He apparently makes enough dough to support all of them without working too hard (he's always on camera). Those kids are never causing trouble (at least on camera) and apparently Mrs. Duggar never has a headache or says the magic words, "No! Now get the hell back on your side of the bed before you pull back a nob and I don't mean your hand!"

Normally, I would admire a nice, clean-cut, law-abiding family with loving, caring, involved parents who put their children first. But something about them is just plain scary and icky. They give me the creeps.

Does anyone else feel that way?

May 2008. Good lord, the woman's pregnant again with No. 18. She is currently 6 weeks pregnant and the youngest is only 9 month's old. She's 41 years old. She'll have to stop breeding soon. The oldest ones must be praying for menopause.

December 2008: "Jordan-Grace Makiya Duggar entered this world earlier this week, via C-section, at a healthy 7 pounds, 3 ounces."

The Duggars apparently adhere to the Quiver Full beliefs that having more children brings you closer to a relationship with G-d, brings you closer to virtue and holiness, so their sons with have brothers and their daughters will have sisters, to end abortion, so they won't be lonely in old age, to counter world de-population, to populate heaven, and to contribute to the economy. For more information about this "ministry", see the links below.

Here's what I wrote 7 years later (Am I a prophet or what?):

May 2015: JOSH DUGGAR MOLESTED YOUNG GIRLS, INCLUDING HIS SISTERS!!! Well looks like my gut was right ater all. This family has been harboring a teenaged (now adult) budding sex pervert all along Seems like Josh was busy molesting young girls, including is sisters. I'll give old Jim Bob some credit for reporting these little twit. It was never prosecuted because the investigating cop was also a pervert investing in child porn. Now one of the victims is asking that the court records be destroyed and apparently, the statutte of limitations has run out. Looks like the bigoted self-righteous are not so righteous after all.

Just like I thought....

Here's the really disturbing thing - the victims, whether they think they are or not. The Duggars have set back victim's rights a thousand years. There they are on national television, identifying themselves, excusing, modifying, and identifying with their abuser. Will their sons touching their daughters be okay? Will Uncle Duggar being along with their daughters okay?

This family is no role-model in any way, shape, or form. This is not how you handle sexual abuse of your daughters. You don't send the message that they are at fault, by locking their bedroom doors (which is a fire hazzard afterall) and restricting their play because you have a mental or emotional health problem in your home. There are a lot of horny teenaged boys and girls out there - but they don't touch their tiny siblings.

You don't excuse this kind of behavior. It's a slap in the face of the many, many individuals who have been abuse and were brave enough to face their attacker. Instead, the Duggars modify and excuse (it was only a few seconds, he was a teen, he was young, he was, he, he, he, nothing about she).

The report is out there. View it for yourselves and tell me what you think.

Here's how so-called Christians are counseled on how to handle abuse in their homes. Please note that it's all about the abuser, it's not about the abused.

Blanket Time

According to Mrs. Duggar, blanket time is taking your kid at around 17 months or 15 months (if they are *really* mature) and teaching them to sit still. Now I don't see anything wrong with teaching children to sit still. Certainly, I had to sit quiet and still at others' homes while my mom and dad chatted with friends. It was boring and a little excruciating sometimes because I was, well, a little kid. If we moved and sort of whined about how much longer would we be, we were given the "eye". I don't know about some families, but there are families whereby if you are given the "eye", well you go and sit your butt back on that blanket, uh, I mean couch and wait their in your itches Sunday best until the adults are done talking. Now I've done a little research and supposedly it is okay to smack your under two-year-old if they have the audacity to move. I don't know whether or not this is part of Mrs. Duggar's blanket time training. What I will say, though, given small children's natural inability to sit still for long periods, I hope this training period doesn't last longer than five minutes. I mean I give my *dogs* a break after five minutes. Here's a link where Mrs. Duggar, chipper, as all get out explains blanket training.

Other perspectives on blanket training

Oh and don't move from that blanket or you will get yourself spanked.

The New Season of the Duggars!

Debra on August 21, 2015:

I agree Paulie. At first I waited until it was verified but he's admitted it so I'm gonna say what I want about this. I've gone through some of the old posts from people who were talking about how moral and good the Duggars are. Well, where are they now that their fair haired boy got caught with his pants down? I get tired of hearing nobodies perfect, we're all sinners or the devil made me do it. If Josh knew he had a propensity to cheat, why didn't he go to someone in the church and admit this before he cheated? I bet he would have been told to pray that God will give him strength to resist. Maybe nobody wanted to help him.

There were many of us who knew something not right was going on in that family before both these scandals broke. Oh yeah, the Duggars may have said they weren't perfect but for most families that means they get angry at each other over stupid things or jealous of another sibling who's getting more attention than the others. Or, it could mean parents who have too many kids and force the older ones to watch the younger ones. But this whole sexual depravity is probably, in my opinion, just the tip of the iceberg. I wonder what Jim Boob is hiding?

Paulie (author) on August 20, 2015:

Well Debra, Josh Duggar is back in the news. Hackers broke into the files of the adult dating site, Ashley Madison, which is specifically for married people to find like-minded married people to cheat on their spouses.

He's disgusting and his family is for the way they self-righteously condemn consenting adults, while hiding their own dysfunction. He was serving on that family council, all while on a spouse cheating website.

Debra on July 07, 2015:

I've never watched any of the programs and I knew there was something going on in that house that wasn't right. The rigidity of their beliefs and the way they try to keep the boys from seeing women dressed in anything other than a Burka were weird to me.

I hope I never hear about this family again unless it's to expose more of their indiscretions. I wonder how they are going to make it without all that TLC booty they no longer get.

The one Duggar girl is begging for money for a missionary trip. Why doesn't Daddy Duggar fund her trip? I bet the kids got a pittance for their time on that show. Words cannot describe how sick I am of them all.

Paulie (author) on June 29, 2015:

Apparently back in May 2015, child protective services tried to get into the home and called 911. No further report on why they were there, if they got in, and what happened after the calls. They did say they were there to see about a child in the home.

All I can say is welcome to the real world Duggars, where the rest of us have to follow secular laws. You are not above the law.

What I find the most unconscionable is their holy than thou attitudes, the blanket condemnation of people who are non-Christians, members of the LGBT community (who they blanket as pedophiles), all the while haboring their own nasty little secret.

Then to add insult to injury by shoving the gravity of child molestation under the rug by saying their daughters were asleep. So this makes it ok???? WTH????

Apparently, Josh was so determined to continue to molest his sisters and others, they had to put locks on the girls' doors. What message does this send to victims? He was so bad they had to finally send him away. We already know they lied about who and how many, where he was sent to, and the "therapy" he was given (not to much was said about the girls receiving therapy - in Christiandom, women are secondary).

They gave me the creeps, seven years ago. I guess my gut was on to something.

And people defending his actions are even more dispicable than this family.

Doris James MizBejabbers from Beautiful South on June 15, 2015:

Paulie, I saw your comment on being washed out and tired of responsibility before you were grown. My best friend raised at least three of her siblings before she left home because her mother kept having babies. It isn't fair to the your children. I heard my parents criticize this family, but they didn't realize how much responsibility they put on me when my siblings were small. I was 7 and 8 years older than they were.

What so many of these defenders of the "Christians" don't realize is that this is an exponential situation. It is people like the Duggars who multiply exponentially, and who will run the world out of food. Humanity can survive without technology and luxuries, but it is the scarcity of food and the contamination of our water supply that could kill us. Why should we in the 21st Century be governed by commandments in a book written around 4,000 years ago when the world needed more people?

To set the record straight, the Duggars are not Pentecosts. Even Pentecosts use birth control. They are an offshoot of some hardshell Baptist group that does fit the description of cult. I'm not sure that the blame rests on Jim Bob. Michelle seems to be the driving force.

I've never met Jim Bob, but I met the family when I sat in the 4th Floor Gallery of our state Capitol and watched Jim Bob be sworn in along with the other state representatives. The children, I think there were 14 or 15 then, were quiet, courteous, and regimented like a little bunch of soldiers as they filed out at the end of the ceremony.

mellowde on June 03, 2015:

Hey Tennesseedad. What's that I see on your face? Is that egg? You accuse me of bashing Christians. How Christian are the Duggars? Not Christian enough to let us know they had a pervert running through the girls room at home doing his "thing" on the Duggar girls.

Once you clean the egg off your face I'd like to hear your response.

The Duggars make Christians' jobs of bringing the knowledge of Christ to others very very difficult. Just because I have enough discernment to figure out these folks aren't all squeaky clean before you doesn't make me a basher of Christians or hater of them. The truth is still the truth. One of His gifts was the truth, you know. And the law. And discernment. Sounds like you may be lacking somewhere in there.

mellowde on June 03, 2015:

So after all these years this family's parents knowingly allowed the program to air without ever mentioning the Josh incident once. And Josh got a job in DC without telling about it. Will his wife allow him to be alone with their daughter as she grows up? Were any of the boys molested by Josh? Is the reason why so many of the Duggar female children never married or even dated due to fear caused by victimization by Josh? Sweet loveable Josh with that cherub face. All the while he is a real fiend. And yes I agree no counseling will resolve the issue he has. Castrate the perp. Make him feel the pain. His own children will bear the pain of embarrassment caused by their father as they grow up. Their peers may remind them their father is a perpetrator and penetrator. Sad, sad, sad. None of this would have happened had the Duggars simply not gone on TV. It all happened before they first aired.

Audra on May 24, 2015:

Pedophilic behavior does not just go away with "religious counseling" people!!! How dumb do you have to be? His poor victims...they matter most! Duggars and lovers alike SUCK!!!

Debra on May 22, 2015:

Here's one of the rules the Duggars say they live by. 9.Never argue, complain, or blame. Quickly admit when you have done wrong and ask for forgiveness (even if you were only 10% at fault). Don't wait till you’re caught. Be sure your sins will find you out. He who covers his sin will not prosper, but he that confesses and forsakes it shall find mercy. I guess Josh's sin finally found him out. Of course his parents knew about it and did their best to cover it up. But, they wanted money so they couldn't help but go on any TV show, magazine cover they could find and they didn't think they'd get caught. What a bunch of freaks

Paulie (author) on May 21, 2015:

Apparently, they were not abstaining from sex, as he seems old Josh Duggar is nothing but a big ol pervert. And the parents knew it!!!!!

Bev on April 05, 2015:

I believe Jim Bob should let his children live their own lives and not interfere so much. It makes me wonder how much he and Michelle did of what he tries to instill in his own children. I know people who are so critical of what other people do or how they raise their children; in reality they were not very religious or followed the difficult things they expect their own children to do. Is this true of Jim Bob and Michelle? I think if could be.

and taste life . Its a CULT

Sherley Perez on March 24, 2015:

There is nothing normal about any of this. They really are a great family and I don't have too much bad to say, but they are extremists. They are so super religious but they are really mean to homosexuals, and given the number of kids in their family, at least one or two of them are bound to be it, there probably just petrified at this point. We can't dictate how many kids a family should have and they don't live off the government so that argument would be null and void. But I don't think there is any way in hell a child can receive all it really needs like alone time or alone time with parents, when they are 19 contenders. And there is no way Michelle is that put together, she is either incredibly fake or just not human. All the girls are taught to do is look for a man to marry and to procreate within weeks of their marriage and that is just not something I agree with. They can populate their own town almost, just with kids, the wives and husbands, and the grand kids. I love Jinger...the only one who actually wants to go to college and do more with her life.

I just recently started watching their show, and at first it was just boring and way too much making everything a Bible lesson (and I'm Christian!). But now I find it kind of creepy. No parents should control their adult kids. Jessa is 21 and Jill is 23. If they weren't Baptist/Quiverfull they could legally drink. They can vote. They can buy a house and get a job and go to college to meet and date until they find the right guy. Instead, their parents play matchmaker and are forced to abstain not only from sex, but physical contact with anyone of the opposite gender even within their own family. I met my fiancée in middle school. We go to the same church, and the funny thing is that we got teased that we were just perfect for each other for a YEAR. I shit you not. Finally, he told me he had had a crush on me and we kissed. It was a short, awkward brush on the lips, but I still remember how amazing I felt having a private moment with someone that I loved. Not an awkward short brush on the lips in front of my ENTIRE family. That is ridiculous. Also, I'm very surprised that Jill is already pregnant, because after no physical contact with the opposite gender for basically her whole life she must be a natural at sex, lol! Another issue for me is the clothes. Not the modesty, I'm modest to a certain degree. I don't wear skirts all the time though, and I have worn skinny jeans and tank tops before. But anyway, the boys wear clothes in the summer that are meant for summer, they wear shorts and short sleeve shirts and sometimes even athletic wear. But the girls have had to hike up small mountains (seriously, more than once in the same damned episode) in denim skirts and flip flops. There were venomous snakes and bugs on the way, and not wearing pants and hiking boots or at least tennis shoes makes it much more likely to get bitten and stung. Joy Anna's clothes don't even fit. She has gorgeous curves, but she is forced to wear hand-me-downs from her size 2 sisters. That's not fair to me. Does anyone agree with any part of my rant? Lol

mellowde on October 29, 2014:

The marriage of the daughter marked a new low for these parents behavior. For JimBobBoy to tell the pair just prior to the ceremony that they would probably be joined at the mouth all the time after the vows was both creepy and disrespectful of their privacy. I was embarrassed for them. The man is a control freak, plain and simple. And the vow to 'not kiss' before they were married is so out of reality that you know it was driven by the parents and not the couple. And meanwhile you know the parents did not observe the same celebecy or whatever you wish to call it prior to their marriage. The admit it. These arbitrary rules and morays imposed by the parents in a coercive fashion are more for the parents peace of mind than the benefit of their children. They even have the littlest one talking about such rules during the program, which is highly immoral itself. Will the little children "chaperon" the married couple to perpetuity? No wonder the oldest son moved as far away as possible. You think the new couple will last in that temporary house? My guess is they go do missionary work in Katmando or some such place for as long as the Dugger parents are living.

Leigh Katz on October 02, 2014:

First of all, all of you crazy supporters of this family are forgetting one thing . They are a family that believes women after marriage should be sex slaves. If you are an educated woman with any self respect or self esteem you would know that this IS domestic abuse. This is not okay !!!For all you wonderful Christians out there do you really think God intended for women to be abused in this way?? The crazy Duggars have been quoted as saying women are not allowed to have headaches and that they must give in to their husbands needs whenever he wants sex. Are you kidding me?? That is abuse : plain and simple. Stop pretending it's some wholesome thing . Under that pleasant facade, lies a family with women trapped in a cult run by men. This Jim Bob jerk is no different than some terrorist leader in the Middle East treating women like dirt. It's mind boggling to me that there are people out there that are so stupid, they don't even see the similarities. But then again education for women is discouraged in many crazy extremist religious groups. Education is the only thing that will change this ignorant opinion. I would love to see the educational background of the women who support this insane family

@debra-Did the parents set one of the oldest daughters up with her fiance? That's what large families have at tendency to do and I believe Lucy McGovern is right.

But anyway, I don't think any practical Christian would stand this family at all, especially if they live in the big city for example.

debra on September 23, 2014:

Not only are they on TV all the time, they are on the cover of magazines or on TV shows they WON'T watch because it might make the kids horny. I've never seen so much disfunction in one family in my life. That a 23 year old girl/woman can't be left alone with her fiancé proves how sick they are. There's nothing wrong with being a virgin before you marry, but it should be your choice.

Lucy McGovern on September 16, 2014:

Although I do enjoy watching this show. It is not for the religious reasons. Having so many children amazes me!

I am not religious at all! There fore I do not believe in their beliefs.

How they bring up their children does not reflect on the real world.

If they live in their own community of disbelief that is okay.

This world is getting so crazy in the last 13 years or more.

All of their children are raised in such an unnatural enviroment.

Their goodie, goodie life style is so unbelievaible.

What would happen if one of the girls got rapped, (hopefully not) and became pregnant? What would Jim Bob and Michelle think then. Or if even one of their children faultered from the beliefs the parents tried so hard to instill in the children.

This business of not kissing until they get married is so lame!

I have no idea what their religious beliefs are! But this is too crazy to believe that people still exist out their that practice this!

In my 53 years of life, I have met many people of all back grounds and beliefs. I have never heard of any one who goes to the extent of these people.

Michelle and Jim Bob are not people I truly believe portray themselves realistically. If they do it really surprises me.

First, Jim Bob supposedly choose Derick for Jill some time ago. What is this? Like an arranged marriage?

This show does at times have a good point. How ever most of the time it makes me shake my head!

Get real people!

The show has only showed one other family called the Bates that live life as the Duggers.

To me this is no different from a cult!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Debra on September 13, 2014:

jpr....I agree with you about the Duggars and their unnatural desire to have children for no other reason than that they think God wants them to. Well, if God wants them to, why don't they do it the way women did hundreds of years ago? No Drs., not anesthesia, no nurses, no hospitals, and no prenatal care. Their quivers wouldn't be so full if they did this. Plus, when the Dr. told Michelle to stop having babies she didn't. But, the old bat continued to go to Drs. to care for her during her pregnancy. Why don't the Duggars depend on God to keep them safe for 9 months of carrying a baby? Could it be these assholes DON'T trust their God after all?

jpr on August 26, 2014:

What is a wrong with their Ideology or way of thinking whether they are christians or not? They don't use any self control. They use old worn out thought patterns that should be banished from the face of the earth for instance their shouldn't be any sex before your married even if your committed to that person. But once these holier then thou Duggard's get married it's no holes barred using the woman up like a rag doll pumping out kid after kid after kid. For what purpose? It appears to be an obsession and addiction just as bad as a crack head needing more crack. As far as it not being our business how many kids people like this have, yes it is, we are the one's in society who have to deal with this brood when they go out in public. And for all you bible beaters who agree with not having sex before marriage and that the duggard's are right.

Realize this Adam and Eve were not married God put them together after creating eve out of Adams rib. Also read Deuteronomy20 verse 7

" And is there any many who has betrothed ( engaged to) a wife and has not taken her, let him go back to his house, lest he die in battle and another man take her. Besides heaven doesn't even acknowledge marriage Jesus said so himself, when asked who's wife will a woman be after each brother takes turns after each one dies he specifically said no ones for there is no marriage in heaven or given of. Heaven doesn't acknowledge marriage it is a man made concept created by man to determine what woman is with what man and to control the masses.

I have watched this show, not because I wanted to but because my girl friend watches this crap and I think it's pretty pathetic that they are teaching their children these same out dated practices hell one of their son's got married and it wasn't long before he started knocking up his wife a few times. Haven't these pathetic people heard of birth control or condoms. In my opinion married people who do this are far worse then unmarried people living together without any children who have more love and respect for each other then to turn their significant other into a baby factory. I know one thing for sure a few of their children will resent them when they get older and tell of how messed up their lives were being raised by a couple of morons. They even may write a book about it

It's amusing how many people trash the Duggers because they demonstrate ideals that are no longer valued or cherished today. Imagine a family who have children all by the same parents (19 of them ) ESPECIALLY today when many women (and men) have children by multiple partners!! Yes they are freakish in comparison to all the other "reality" shows on TV because all of those shows demonstrate mainstream thought and (of course) if you are not part of the mainstream think-tank you are part of a cult. Today the mainstream thought is be pregnant with your first before 15 and be unmarried (reality show for that one) or the "bad girls club" where the 20-somethings pull each others hair, scream at each other using the f-bomb with every other word and other vulgar language along with crass and lewd comments, gestures, and reactions, or show the Jersey Shore party-pack getting drunk every minute of the day for weeks on end all summer long all the while humping everything in site. IN FACT it is MORE normal today to be mentally unstable, emotionally immature, and fly off the handle at the smallest issues than it is to be respectful to others, or as the comment above me suggests that to be "outstanding" today you need to dress like a whore or have a wild side to be memorable because for mainstream America ANY attention even if it is negative is better than being boring, having character, or being pleasant because as I skimmed the comments being nice isn't normal for mainstream America. What is creepy is how America has sunk to the lowest of lows with TV today, having more than a dozen "news" shows on celebrity lives where they show you a picture taken of a celebrity and then tell you what is going on in that photo yet never confirming anything with the celebrity or ever having a conversation with that celebrity. It is rare to watch any show today where more than half the show is sexually suggestive with even the simplest of plots and majority of reality shows have multiple beeps for every conversation because it seems reality shows generally prefer the selling content of smut and controversy seeking out people who don't have anything intelligent to say - mainstream America LOVES that. And it's so amazing how many ignorant people post on these sites claiming the Duggers are overpopulating - oh gosh that is too funny. These people are self-reliant, own their home and everything in it, own their cars and have no credit card debt, yet America is filled with teenagers today who get pregnant and can't afford one child then go out and have another!! And somehow THAT is okay, yet a mother and father who have many children are overpopulating irresponsibly per the uneducated response of most here. The Duggers are creepy simply because today people love to hate and the entertainment industry sells hate, anger, and aggressive people. I find it creepier that people are willing to send their children to public schools to be inducted into the cult of mainstream think-tank where being different is NEVER encouraged having thoughts outside of mainstream America is frowned upon, and it's amazing those inside mainstream America can't see the control the media and the public education think-tank has done to their morals, values, and character because most today believe if you have any of those you are a biggot. Fascist thought is taught in public schools no small wonder home-schooling is becoming more popular by those who are labeled "cult" by the think-tank.

It really, really drives me nuts when people talk about how "respectful" the Duggars are of others with different beliefs. Case in point:

This is the organization that Josh Duggar works for. It lobbied for congress NOT to oppose Uganda's kill the gays bill. Does anyone care to explain how this is respectful of different beliefs?

In any (and all) populations, a certain percentage of the people will be homosexual or lesbian. And, I'd bet money that one or more or the Dugger children is or will be struggling with that issue. Creepy dad and chief seeder Jim Bob most likely subscribes to the dangerous myth that homosexuality is a choice so woe to him when one of his offspring comes out of the closet and write a book.

And, if you're one of those who believe that it's a choice, ask yourself when you made the "choice" to be hetero. Chances are, you'll say to yourself "I just always knew." Exactly, and so do they.

Emily on March 15, 2014:

I came across this post randomly and got sucked into it and the comments. Then I looked the Duggars up and learned a bit, from different angles. We have 4 children and 1 foster daughter. We're considered to have a large family. 5 is plenty for us, not interested in a bigger van :-) We're not Christians and do not follow a particular line of thought that people should have large families, we simply really, really like having 5 kids. Our kids are all healthy, well cared for, outgoing and fun to be around. I've known many a family with more kids than us and for the most part, they seem to do just fine. I would not endorse everything that the Duggars do or all of their values (particularly regarding women and education, or education in general), but I'm more put off by how negative people are about this family, particularly their religious affiliation. I worked in a Pentacostal school as a special education teacher about 10 years ago. It was the best job I ever had. The people were open minded, kind, fun, welcoming and stable. I was not part of their group or even part of Christianity, but that didn't matter. I knew some of them socially as well and I never felt pressured to be anything other than I was. I cut my hair, the other women didn't. I didn't wear dresses all the time, they did. I didn't find as much meaning in their style of worship as they did, but why in the world would I fault them for not doing things my way. Their way was helping them develop the qualities I mentioned above.

Have you ever read the Bible Faith? Well, I have and I read it a lot in the past before I finally outgrew its simplistic answers to life problems. You can make the Bible support just about any lifestyle you choose and the Duggars choose one verse to support their unbridled need to have one child after another. If they really wanted to do it the "Bible way" they wouldn't go to Drs. and just let nature take its course as women did in bronze age. No, this family is weird in my opinion and I'm glad they aren't on TV, internet, and magazines like they used to be.

I don't think there is anything wrong with this family. They have their own values and beliefs. Regardless to what others think, people always have to put their two cents in. Because this family has conservative, religious views, they are considered a "cult" by so many people who believe that their more liberal approach to life is correct. While as a conservative myself, I believe that we are all allowed to freely believe and pray the way we want to. I also believe that we should not judge others, especially if they do not share the same views as ourselves, as hard as it may be, we are all guilty of this. The whole point of having children is to raise them to be mature, responsible, moral adults. That's it. I don't see very much of that these days, so the fact that these parents are raising decent citizens is wonderful. Conservatives being pegged as hate groups and right winged wackos is just a joke. As Americans, we can freely practice our own religions, we all have that right, so why pick on this families beliefs? Again, back to judging. May this family continue to prosper and may many more families learn from them. God Bless You ALL

Doll on October 24, 2013: just for Sherie and the Duggars themselves dont tolerate anyone that isnt of their faith. They use the buddy system to extremes that one of the grown adults have someone with them at all times. That isnt healthy and have you read Saving Grace to I can link it. Its survivors of this kind of religion but then you actually agree with Josh working for a known hate group. They dont believe in rights for all just nice white conservatives. Yeah you can stick their god. Mine is more tolerant and will accept anyone regardless.

Gail on October 22, 2013:

I love the children...all 19 of them are well mannered, respectful and attractive. They certainly are a refreshing change from the tatoos and piercing, sagging pants and welfare children who begat more welfare children. I do think the decision to have the children should be the parents. Maybe God does have something to do with it because he had the sense to know I only could handle 2. However, the hypocrisy of parading their family with its wonderful values on television then refusing to allow their children to watch ANY television is not Christian. Long hair, no make-up, and swimming in dresses can't disguise that. Also, I can't help but wonder what the state of Michelle's uterus is. Is she ever not pregnant long enough to have a pap smear and what will be the long term effects of staying pregnant for 20 years? Maybe the raging hormones can explain the irrationality of having the children raising the children. I do hope Josh and Anna show some restraint and stop with maybe 10 or 12.

Sherie on September 11, 2013:

I find it interesting that these days if a woman decides to kill her unborn child, or as the world likes to call it, have an abortion she is supported and even praised. It is her CHOICE afterall, correct? It is her RIGHT TO CHOSE to kill her unborn baby, I mean have an abortion. So if it is really about choice, why is it then that a Christian couple who make a CHOICE to bear all the children God gives them, they are persecuted?

I'll tell you why. Because these days the world has forgotten what a real family is. We laugh at the old tv "Brady Bunch" or "Leave it to Beaver" type families and now we model ourselves after "The Osbornes" and 'Modern Family" type families. You're not a real family if you don't scream and shout, if Mum doesn't flip out, if Dad doesn't watch internet porn or if there isn't at least one homosexual child among the brood.

These days, what is good is frowned upon and what is bad is encouraged. People actually WANT to see one of the Duggar's lose their temper just so they can point the finger and say "aha, you're just like me".

Well, let me tell you people. The Duggars are clearly unlike most families because before Michelle and Jim were married they knew that they were dedicating their lives and any of their future childrens' lives to the Lord.

Oh that's right, they are raising "a cult"..."Christian robots". Do we not all raise our children with our own beliefs? And those who say they raise their children to make their own decision about any faith they may chose, I doubt you would encourage them becoming Christian. Become a Buddhist and you're a deep philosophical thinker, become a Hindu and you're a creative mysticist. But don't dare become a Christian, you just might want to do what is right by God, what a tragedy!

God bless you, Duggar family, and thankyou for opening up your lives to us. I pray that God continues to bless you and any more children He may give you.

Jealousy is evil. You should be happy that she can bear children some women cannot. They were made for each other, not living off welfare, not on food stamps...what's the friggin' problem?????????? Find something else important to report and let them live their productive life as parents. At least the kids are not on drugs, on crack! Having children that have no father, living on welfare that the society has to put out of their pocket money to support the illegal acts that go on day tot day with other family's. they are not out beating, ormstabbingmor murdering someone!,!

lulabell on April 24, 2013:

OMG oh my goodness! i just googled and found the house guidelines. this is why the kids are so calm and peaceful on the tv show. they are trained robots. they are to put on a good face even when they dont feel like it. this is awful 1000%. my spouse was raised like this and it made him a not so good husband. i am still praying that he will become human and not dutiful and programmed to always be nice. this created for him emotional deadness. he shows very little genuine emotion and just goes about being dutiful and following all the rules his family had. It is awful and so not appealing. My husband could not handle conflict from being around his family, they just smile when someone does them wrong and keep speaking to them as if they did not. He smiled when his family put me down or said wrong things. The rules are awful and yukky! He would never ever say a critical thing about a person. Even if it was true and needed to be said to vent. He just pretended they did not do it or it was okay. A leech is a leech and a liar is a liar to me. THIS FAMILY IS DOING WHAT I SUSPECTED , THEY ARE LAW BASED AND HAVE EXCESSIVE RULES! a Christian is better off being taught about walking in the spirit and God character will cause them to do the things on this rules list. At very young ages rules are okay, but as they grow older it turns them into robot who obey and do things out of duty!!!

Duggar House Guidelines

1.Always use soft words, even when you don’t feel well.

2.Always display kind actions and joyful attitudes, even if you have been mistreated. Have the right response by quickly forgiving others in your heart even before they ask.

3.Always be enthusiastic and look for opportunities to praise others' character.

4.Always deflect praise and be grateful to God and others for the ways they have benefited your life.

5.Always use manners and be respectful of others and their belongings.

6.Always do what is right, even when others may not, or when no one is looking.

7.Thank God for how He made you, for what He has given you and everything He allows you to go through. (Romans 8:28)

8.Don’t mock or put others down. Develop compassion and pray for others.

10.Have a tough accountability/prayer partner to daily share your heart with and to keep you in line (your parents, spouse). The power of sin is in secrecy.

11.Be attentive and look for ways to serve others with sincere motives and no thought of self-gain.

12.Think pure thoughts (Philippians 4:8, Romans 13:14).

13.Always give a good report of others. Don't gossip! Never tale-bear unless physical harm will come to someone. (Use Matthew 18.)

14.Never raise a hand to hit.

15.Never raise a foot to kick.

16.Never raise an object to throw.

17.Never raise a voice to yell.

18.Never raise an eye to scowl.

19.Use one toy/activity at a time. Share!

20.Do your best to keep your surroundings neat, clean and organized.

21.Never let the sun go down on your wrath.

(Don’t go to bed angry or guilty)

22.Amendment J.O.Y. -

-Put Jesus first, Others second, Yourself last.

I am adding to the discussion by posting the income below of the duggars. Love of money is the root of all evil. I am not saying they are doing evil by having the kids. I am saying money can be a big factor! Which would many choose, being on tv with kids or working hard with a job year after year? This helps to feul the having of the babies for sure.

What is the Duggar family's income source?

They have business property that they rent out, that was purchased when Jim Bob sold real estate. They also have a used car sales company that Josh runs.

In addition, it is estimated that they get between $40,000 to $60,000 per episode of 19 Kids and Counting on TLC.

The Duggars owned some Commercial real estate, they also owned a towing company and auto-body but sold it in the 1990's and began investing in commercial real estate and traveling, making money giving talks at different Christian organizations and homeschooling conventions. They also believe in not living beyond ones means which has allowed them to set aside great deals of money and invest it. They were very wealthy even before the reality show.

lulabell on April 24, 2013:

THE COMMENT BELOW has really resonated with me. My mom was one of 18 kids and she was made to look after the younger ones. why? the mom can not do it all. This is what is wrong with all these kids she is having. she can not do it! HELLO! My mom hated looking after the younger ones and having to drop out of school back then to do her mom job that she could not do: raise her own kids she gave birth to. SEE! this does not work. I have an aunt who continued the excess babies which is what others fear the duggar girls will do. She gave the excess babies to her older daughter to help raise them. my aunt beared 17 kids. her older daughter hated doing all the laundry and sitting for them and being made into a nanny. THIS IS NOT A GOOD THING AT ALL TO HAVE ALL THESE KIDS. Kids do what they learn, but it is not necessarily good at all for them. They are having no choice at all.

You don't have to watch the Duggar show for long before you figure out that the girls do all, or most of, the work. They cook, clean, MOTHER younger children, etc. These girls have been raised to be baby machines and none of them has had a baby. I bet most of them are sick of cooking and cleaning and being mother to children that aren't their own.

lulabell on April 24, 2013:

Lastly, a big huge thankyou to who ever started this web page so a discussion can be made. I read a lot of the comments that scrutinize or look beneath the surface at what is really going on. I would never have the time to do the researcha and find out many of then negatives being pointed out. Many comments examine them from a christian point of view and this is where they fall short. comments such as they dont appear human due to no fights or spats, comments such as this is a cult which means the people in this family or kids and wife are programmed or have mind control, comments such as they declare the home a church and pay no taxes at all, comments such as someone donated all they needed for the home- i can see this only when the female has had excess kids due to in vitro fertilization and many still question this if a person has this procedure more than once, commets such as the kids are not hugged much on camera, except the infants, i must say she can't hug all of them, she would go insane and this is where she is lacking. She is one woman and cant give the love andhugs all need daily. this is why all the kids is not good. my grandma had 18 and could not hug them all. my mom was one of her kids and i ended up with neurosis due to no hugs as a child. my mom learned to do as her mom did her and did not hug me and still does not . she just pats me on the back because this is all her mom could do for her when she was surrounded by 18 of them daily. i suffer due to my grandma having so many kids she could not hug daily.

comments that this family is pentecostal. I used to be. that they are pentecostal should raise a red flag. this is a rules oriented type of religion and they stress no makeup long skirts etc. it is awful and focuses on rules and this is what people say this woman does. i consider my former church which was pentecostal to be like a cult with all the rules. no dancing,,,,it is lipstick , marry only pentecostal, and not the guy i met baptist and if i marry baptist they are all drinkers and smokers. my church family refuse to attend my wedding.

comments such as the family wants to impose their values of no birth control on everyone else. this is how the pentecostal religion is. it is like a cult and probably one for sure. i say it is. when i did not do as they wanted, they quit speaking to me and if i made a mistake i was condemned. all this made me want to comply.

the duggars are a cult family for sure. all brainwashed. THE LESSON IS IF IT LOOKS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE. IT IS. THEY ARE NOT A GREAT GREAT FAMILY AT ALL. THEY DONT ACT HUMAN AND THAT IS A SIGN OF MIND CONTROL BRAIN WASHING OR PROGRAMMING. IT MUST BE DONE BY FREE WILL AND NOT BY WATCHING ALL THE OTHERS AND FALLING IN LINE FOR FEAR OF REJECTION. MANY THINGS THEY DO ARE GOOD BUT IT IS TAINTED 100%. They have poor reasons for what they do and the quiver full notion is ludicrous. this is only if you can afford them and they clearly can not. they like getting money for what they do and all the help for their mental ill state of mind that caused them to bear the kids to excess! thanks again to the one who started this post. It helps people to see the truth and not fall for everything you see. It is always best to look beneath the surface.

the scriptures posted here help a lot and enable one to see the truth.

They have put themselves out their in the spotlight and on tv. It is dishonoring and they are selling themselves for money. I dont care how you look at it. They have devalued themselves. the bible talks of doing stuff in secret or private. money changes people and then they want more money or fame which is to be known and seen. they are not immune to this. no one knows their private thoughts which may be sinful. they may crave attention money and fame on a subconscious level. besides what she is doing is no different or famous than what the african american family did for years and years. many have had 18 kids and more. this was to support the farm and etc. why is she getting publicity. it is a money cash cow method. it can not be made okay because today allows people to get on tv stations and show themselves off as a super family with good morals. she could have been on tv initially to show what they do. but to do it year after year. this shows the agenda is fame and money. it is not honorable , it is devaluing and distasteful to put yourself and your kids you bear on tv and let all watch. if a family of a different heritage did this it would not be received so well. it is funny how some in society do things and everyone just thinks it is so cute. it is not. it is selling themselves for money and devaluing themselves and their family. if you have the kids do it in private and not for the world to see. do an interview or write a book and leave it alone. dont appear on tv weekly and sign up with a cable network. they just cheapened the whole experience because a dollar tag is put on them and the kids. they are all for sale. humans are not commodities to be sold. what would Jesus do? He would not allow himself and his kids rto be filmed for money and get a check in the mail. it is cheap and tawdry. african americans raised 19 kids for years and years and no camera filmed it or gave them money and interviews etc. Ridiculous is ridiculous. and just because you can do it , does not mean you should. keep your kids and life private and stop garnering all the fame and attention for doing what people have done for years. They a re not the winners of a contest. as far as helping others, they can not do that. the family has broken down and watching them will not restore the state of the american family and the loss of family values. enough! i dont watch this exploitation of a female bearing excessive kids and i never ever will.

Hope none of you really think he wouldn't be controlling that marrige or atleast trying to! Those girls are very attractive and intelligent, and you cannot tell me what's going on is normal.

I ain't saying that any of them should have gone out and had sex by now, or that they should have kissed or anything like that. But shouldn't atleast one of them have atleast had a boy show interest by meeting with Jimbo? As candid as they seem to be about almost everything in their lives, I really do not think it's happend yet. Basically, this latest controversy (death of Jubilee) is yet another example of why this family needs to be keeping their lives on the QT. I did not watch and haven't since they first aired years ago but have read this blog. The pro's and con's of the Duggars lives including the fact that they allow it to be put on TV for money is for me, proof that they have no concern for their children, both living and dead. And I say that without any animosity towards them. I assume they came from nothing and this shot at fame and fortune has blinded them and their sensitivities towards themselves and their children. And they have hit the jackpot with their Euro vacations, greyhound bus rv's, house from disneworld, etc. In my mind their airing all their private moments for money shows just how hooked on the perks they have become. The word hypocracy comes to mind. Who could take their words/message seriously?

Michelle dishes out her orders and they have to do it. Did you know that Michelle micro preemie came home from the hospital and it was Jana that was her nurse maid. Did you know on her check ups Josie I mean Michelle takes Jill with her and its her that is pushing the buggy (stroller) not her mother. Have you seen Michelle actually cuddle any of her kids for that matter.

I saw Josiah cry over the news of the 20th pregnancy that poor boy and his father manhandled him back, he was frightened it would happen again another Josie or worse his mum would die. I'll bet he was relieved as bad as that sounds. He knows his mother is alive well I use that term loosely but alive non the less.

I thought the way they honored Jubilee was really beautiful. Most people don't have funerals for miscarried babies. I didn't notice or care what they buried her in but it was really heartwarming that they had a ceremony for her.

Tears for Jubilee on September 07, 2012:

what about the ammo can you burried jubilee in? i guess you were just being humble? it is so sweet to see the child you wanted so badly tossed into the earth in an ammo can! please do not let me forget the wooden trinket box that came first. i guess that since jubilee was so tiny and would require something specificaly made for her that it was not worth it? i will not tell anyone what they should or should not do with the money they have earned but this baby was your wish! does the honor of this child only extend to some pictures and words and a trinket box inside an ammo can? is that the worth of this gift from god? whether or not i agree with your life choices does not matter. im really in the middle and it does not matter anyways because all i have is an opinion. take it for what you believe it is worth. but the ammo can? i cried when i saw that and not tears for jubilee because those came earlier. i hope and pray that you felt you had a very good reason to do such a thing.

even though i know the duggars themselves would never acknowledge a site like this im speaking as i would to them. please forgive me for that.

The first couple times I saw the show I was totally creeped out. The first episode I saw was when Josh proposed to Anna after only seeing each other three times and when she said yes they gave each other the awkward sideways friend hug ugh! But over the years the Duggars have grown on me. While I most definitely don't live my life that way, I am intrigued by how they do. I, like Michelle, also had a micro preemie and can relate and understand why she would want to have another child after that. Although if it were my 20th kid, I'd be calling it quits for sure!!

Tssk on September 05, 2012:

The Duggard wife is every feminist's nightware - a woman with an over-exerted uterus and dumb vagina. Oh my. And does she have any hobbies or aspirations besides giving birth? A full make-over and time out with the ladies is in order for her. Thoughen up woman!

LMR, it's interesting you try to confuse the conversation by injecting that tidbit about 'the current generation' as if you knew all in 'the current generation'. And furthermore this isn't a discussion about some misguided youngsters who you may know in comparison to the Duggars. This is a discussion of the Duggars being creepy. Try and keep to the facts and stay on track. By the way there are many very good people in the current generation as you call it and they are quite responsible without raising their mom and dads other 18 children. I personally know quite a few who are an asset to our society. And they don't have tv show revenues to support them but rather work in real productive jobs actually making things we all need and use.

Now the comments about LIFE or pro-choice is one that has no place in this discussion. No one has said it is against the law for the Duggars to reproduce. And if they were actually hands on with their children on a daily basis there would be no issues. Problem is they delegate their younger progeny's upbringing to their older children. And not just once in a while.

LMR on August 28, 2012:

Everyone seems so opposed to children having responsibility and act like a child can't possibly be happy living this way...What about the current generation of children who have grown up with little to no responsibility, who are dissatisfied with life and turn to drugs / promiscuity because there's nothing to live for? Ask any of those kids if they wish they would take back a single member of the family in lieu for more free time or material possessions for themselves. In a selfish world where possessions and self-indulgence is more important than human life, their life doesn't make sense. But in a world where God and human life are most valued - it does.

And Mrs. Duggar has chosen for herself to have these children. Mr. Duggar leaves the decision to have more up to her everytime.

For those who claim to support women's rights and are pro "choice", it's a little strange that you don't seem to support a woman's right to choose LIFE for as many children as she wants. Maybe "pro-choice" is most properly "pro-abortion [only]". Do women not have the right to choose this lifestyle without being criticized for their values?

mellowde on August 09, 2012:

Cecilia, I do not concur with your philosophy. I don't think this woman has any problems asserting herself in any way and lives quite above the average woman in this country. And I believe she also willingly lays in bed with Jim and spreads her legs to produce yet more children each time. I see no evidence that Jim-bob props her legs open to induce those pregnancies. I do believe a wife is able to be helpful to her husband without putting him down in public like so many women do today. What is the current divorce rate? 80%. Why even bother with marriage if the roles of marriage are not adaquate for either the husband or wife going in? In any working family someone has to make decisions. And it should be possible that both agree. But when there is no agreement someone has to make the decisions. If you don't like your man to be decisive than why would you want one to begin with? These roles were laid out by our creator long before either of us were around. You are arguing with Him regarding that issue. He had His reasons and you may not be privy until you pass from this life. As far as the Duggars I see the main issue is the number of children. No good parent can raise that many children without subborning the older children to do the job as well. And that is where I find issue. Both Michelle and Jim are equally guilty of child abuse. There I said it. "CHILD ABUSE". Plain and simple. No issue of woman's rights, though. That old poor tired, dead-horse don't work anymore. Go to your local woman's shelter and see the hatred they have for men. Their definition of 'spousal-abuse' is absurd. It includes such things as mistreating your pet and other such non-sensical things to define abuse of a wife or live-in lover. According to their definition almost every man is abusive. Problem with that is almost every woman is also abusive. And the shelters are the one's who provide the statistical data used by the government and media to state the percentage of abuse. No. None of us are perfect. And all of us will fall short from time to time. But the proof lies in how we try or fail to try to do right. It's an old Christian value. Forgiveness of those who are trying but fall short. I see no signs of Michelle not making her own decisions. Sounds like you live in a world where all men are bad. What a shame.

Cecilia on August 08, 2012:

These people have problems. Apparently they believe that it is "right" that a woman should be subservient to her husband. That is sick. What is wrong with a woman having her own opinions and making her own decisions for what is best for her? According to them- a lot. That Jim Bob has control issues and should be sterilized. A man should not be allowed to father that many kids.

mellowde on August 04, 2012:

The one good thing about the Duggars is I can turn them off with my remote. The only problem with that is I feel like an ostrich sticking my head in the sand. Like I know this dysfunctional family exists and I am doing nothing about it. Just ignoring a problem doesn't solve it. This family is so flawed in so many ways that I cannot list them all here. And most families have issues of some sort or other. But when you open yourself up the way this family has done by going on tv for all the see... Well, it's in your face, so to speak. And that makes me very uncomfortable. While I don't know what the answers are, I do know that watching them doesn't make me feel very good. In fact I stopped watching them years ago. And if everyone else did the same the Duggars would be defunded and unable to continue their lifestyle. And I believe at that point the older kids would just pack up and leave the younger one's to be raised by the actual parents. And then, perhaps the parents would not be so prone to lay down and have more. Just my thoughts on this weird group.

Paulie (author) on May 22, 2012:

@tennesseedad, I get really bored with the whole republican/democrat, liberal/conservative "debate" that gets brought up on every topic imaginable on the internet, as though anyone is all one thing or another, even if they identify themselves as one particular thing, as though that means they think identically to another person who identifies themselves as being that one particular thing.

We are much to complex as human-beings to be all this or all that. I want to just (((yawn))) when someone accuses another of being a liberal or a conservative as though that explains *everything*. That would mean that half the country thinks and agrees on everything and disagrees on everything with the other half which all agree with each other on every issue of family, politics, religion, god/God, raising kids, etc. Of course, people don't all agree, all the time, on every topic.

One thing I do notice though is there are way more people "accusing" someone of being liberal than someone presumably liberal accusing someone of being conservative. Soon this accusation coming up in seemingly every internet debate or discussion will eventually take over as the new Godwin's Law.

According to Wikipedia "Godwin's law (also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies or Godwin's Law of Nazi Analogies is an observation made by Mike Godwin in 1990 that has become an Internet adage. It states: 'As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches.' In other words, Godwin observed that, given enough time, in any online discussion—regardless of topic or scope—someone inevitably criticizes some point made in the discussion by comparing it to beliefs held by Hitler and the Nazis."

"You liberals always...." - the Law of Godwin.'s_law
