The Seven Pitfalls of Ministry

the-seven-pitfalls-of-ministry

Culled from my book of the same title

In life, I have learnt that wisdom is not the preserve of the old (otherwise Solomon would have been hard pressed to get it) rather, when we ask from God and believe, He will give it to us without holding back. In as much as experience counts for something, wisdom is the principal thing! In all our getting, understanding is better than experience.

I have only spent roughly six (6) years in the ordained ministry and about 17 years as a Christian but in these few years. I have learnt from the Lord a lot of things that if left for experience to teach me, I'll die. In ministry, there are pits and traps and things that run down the minister and his ministry -  I call them the seven misery -making "M"s of ministry. In themselves, they are not bad but when we neglect the place of discipline and self control, we fall into the pit dug by the devil and hidden just behind these 7 things. They are:

1. THE MONEY: Many a time, the Lord has wept sorely because His servant in whom He placed a lot of responsibility has neglected the Giver and pursued after the gifts. Many ministers have invented many ways to insult the Holy Spirit because of their love for money. While serving as a Missionary in the Niger Delta, I encountered a few 'men of God' who took it upon themselves to preach in commercial vehicles. That, in itself is a noble idea; but when one considers that they spend a few minutes talking about God and 80% of the time they preach talking about money and asking for a seed! Sowing seeds is a wonderful thing if done in the right way, the right place and with the right motives.

2. THE MAIDENS: Women naturally are creatures of love and they naturally gravitate towards wherever or whoever shows them that care and love and an emotionally unstable woman can ask for more than the normal and most times, we have ministerial casualties. Some men of God, having tasted of adultery and found the bread eaten in secret to be sweet, forget that gravel will follow soon after and they develop a taste for lewd flesh. A minister once asked another junior minister's wife for sex because her husband was away for a while. He kept pestering her until she threatened to report him. All because God, in His infinite mercy, has refused to destroy first offenders...

3. THE MIRACLES: In as much as the miracles are wrought through our hands, we must not forget that there is a Source and His name is Jehovah and in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit we perform the miracles. Some have forgotten and ascribed the glory to themselves. Because of miracles, many men of God have sought for 'quick power' from the devil to perform such. In Nigeria here, there are many men of God who have derailed and looked for power from the devil. They still preach and perform miracles but they are no longer with Christ. The Judgment Day is going to throw up a lot of surprises!

4. THE MULTITUDES: The people (the flock) can make the Minister sin. Some ministers have become too proud before God because of the praise singing of the multitudes. Some have (like Aaron) made "golden calves" for the people because the people asked for such. My heart bleeds when I see many Christians today who have a form of godliness but deny the power thereof.

5. THE MISTAKES: Being human, it is not unnatural to make mistakes. The problem however, is in refusing to get up after making the mistake. Early in ministry, the Lord led me to Micah Chapter 7 verse 8 and it says: Rejoice not over me, O mine enemy; when I fall, I shall arise and when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light to me...  Notice that the scripture says "When I fall..." and not "If I fall" - Because God knows our frailties, He made provision for us (Isaiah 1:18-19; 1 John 1:8,9) but some men of God refuse to get up and they are forgotten.  I remember a story of a great man of God in one of our rural areas here in Nigeria. The Lord used him to save many souls and to perform miracles and he was popular. Sometime later, his wife gave birth and began to bleed as a result of the delivery. Many people urged him to take her to hospital but he refused, claiming faith that God would heal his wife. She bled until she died of loss of blood and in anger, he threw away his Bible, claiming that God was no longer worthy to be served. He died a drunkard. Remember Judas Iscariot -  Don't die because of the mistakes you made.

6. THE MANDATE: Do you really have a mandate to be where you are , man/Woman of God? So many have fallen by the wayside because they could not really defend the mandate they received of the Lord. Let us be sure that the Lord really called us into ministry because WHEN THE STORMS WILL COME, our mandate will keep us going. I have faced terrible things in ministry -  False accusation, false brethren, fellow ministers who wanted my wife, people who turned their backs because they believed false stories about me, sicknesses that almost killed me, rejection and a few others but I kept my heart on the Lord because I could boldly say: YOU CALLED ME, LORD, SO LIFT ME UP! And He always does.

7. THE MINIONS OF SATAN: Attacks from the devil are badges of honour. If the devil does not attack your ministry or family, man of God, then you are not doing the right thing - check yourself. In October 2009, while ministering in Church, the weather began to behave abnormally. One minute, it was very sunny and the very next, as I was about to preach, it suddenly started raining heavily. We prayed and the rain stopped and the ministration continued. 2 weeks later, a young lady came to the Church and asked to see me. She confessed that she and another girl were sent on assignment by their master to come and kill me while I was ministering and that they wanted to command lightening to strike me dead, which was why they caused the rain to fall. That is only one of the many stories. The yoke of Christ is easy and His burden is light - with Him we can succeed and nothing shall by any means hurt us. Many have fallen by the wayside because of constant attacks. Please, be strong - your Redeemer liveth!!!

I am persuaded to add here, that RAPTURE is just around the corner. The trumpet is already in the mouth of the Lord and the archangel is taking a deep breath to release his shout...everything is ready and all eyes are looking towards Israel and the United Nations Organisation. All is in place and the anti-christ is alive...let us prepare for blast off. Keep your robes clean and without wrinkles for soon, we will be going home. God bless you!

The Rev. Kelechi Timothy Francis (author) from Rivers State, Nigeria on March 30, 2013:

Thank you, sir. I have never claimed knowledge of Scripture like you so I see no reason to argue. Believe what you must but at the blast of the Trumpet, all will be clear. The Spirit of God will help His people to KNOW the truth before it becomes too late!

charlie from From Kingdom of God living on Planet earth in between the oceans on March 30, 2013:

psalm 106 has NOTHING to do with rapture or end times

Matthew 37-39 make it clear the UNRIGHTEOUS ARE TO BE REMOVED.

1THES -- air to support life only extends up a few thousand feet, its talking surface of earth - see genesis 1 verse 8

Corinthians scripture takes place after the judgement so is invalid for this purpose

So lets recap- you did not answer my first question--

-you gave me 4 scriptures---only 1 even pertains to the subject

So lets see , you gave me only one scripture that could apply and you do not believe what it says , you twist it to try to tell me it means the opposite of what it says-- and I am supposed to believe it even though it goes against scripture--I think not.

you are right God will judge you for teaching this false doctrine. He will judge all of us for what we teach. I ask Him to judge between us on this issue because only those who have an eye to see can see the truth. and you are not willing to even look at the truth. if you are then explain what \Matt 37-39 really means.

The Rev. Kelechi Timothy Francis (author) from Rivers State, Nigeria on March 30, 2013:

Thanks, Celafoe, but you might want to look at Psalms 106:32-33 and also Matthew 24:36-51. Rapture is real and it is coming sooner than you think. You might also want to look at 1Thess. 4:16-18; 1 Corinthians 15:50-55. God will definitely judge me if I preach what the scriptures do not foretell as well as you also.

charlie from From Kingdom of God living on Planet earth in between the oceans on March 29, 2013:

Please give me the scripture that gives the description of what a junior minister is, I am not familiar with it.

sorry but the people cannot make a minister to sin. that is a false and unscriptural statement .

James 1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

9 Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation, 10 but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away. 11 For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits. 12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.

and last, there is no rapture study the scriptures and you will see it will be "as it was in the days of Noah when the UN-righteous were removed from the earth" think how many will be scared and lose trust in the Lord when they are left on the earth when the unrighteous are removed. And everyone that that teaches this false doctrine will answer to God for the lost lives.
