The Old Serpent and the Forbidden Fruit in the Garden of Eden

Dieudonne NKUNDIMANA, is a man saved by the blood of Jesus Christ through faith, and now is a Christian born again by the Holy spirit.

The Serpent and the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden are ones of the things that are still mysteries in this world while they are the ones that are clear and can be found in written in different books of the Holy Bible.

Before mankind sins in the Garden of Eden, God created man in his own image. ‘‘So, God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.’’ (Genesis 1:27 NIV). These people created here were in spirit form because they were created in the image of God that cannot sin. The question here is: what is the image of God? According to the Holy Bible God is spirit. ‘‘God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the spirit and in truth.’’ (John 4:24 NIV).

These people created in spirit form could not till the ground. ‘‘And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.’’ (Genesis 2:5 NIV) Then God created a man in physical form to till the ground, to be fruitful and multiply. ‘‘And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.’’ (Genesis 2:7 NIV).

The snake is the old Serpent cursed

What was the Old Serpent in the Garden of Eden?

The old serpent was pure animal, the beast upright creature somewhat in between a chimpanzee and a man but closer to a man. He was so close to human being that his seed could mingle with that of the woman. This serpent could reason and talk not like snakes of today that cannot talk. He talked to Eve and he was craftier than any of the wild animals God had created. ‘‘Now the serpent was craftier than any of the wild animals the Lod God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God really says, you must not eat from any tree in the Garden’?’’ (Genesis 3:1 NIV)

Even if this serpent was more substile than any beast of the field, he was one of the animals that Adam had dominion over. And then because this serpent was able to reason and talk the devil came down and got into the serpent and inspired him to beguile Eve and cause the death to the mankind. That is why the Bible says, ‘‘Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.’’ (Revelation 12:12 NIV) The devil came down from heaven after failing the war he had started. ‘‘The war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down-that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.’’ (Revelation 12:7-9 NIV)

The Serpent after being an instrument of beguiling Eve in the Garden of Eden, God cursed him. His legs went off of him, and on his belly he went. ‘‘So, the Lord God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.’’ (Genesis 3:14 NIV) This kind of punishment made the history of the serpent to be a mystery from Genesis up to revelation even the science can’t find the missing link between the serpent and mankind because the old serpent was totally different from the snake of today. He became reptile while he was walking upright on legs.

An image of the woman in the Garden of Eden

Existence of the woman in the Garden of Eden

In the Garden of Eden Adam had already been made and was living physically to till the ground not in spirit form. He was lonesome and then God said, ‘‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper suitable for him.’’ (Genesis 2:18 NIV) Then God accomplished what he has said by forming a woman for Adam from his ribs. ‘‘So, the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.’’ (Genesis 2:21-22 NIV)

This was the existence of a woman and Adam was the one who has named her a woman. ‘‘Then man said, ‘this is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman; for she was taken out of man’.’’ (Genesis 2:23 NIV) this woman is the one who is called ‘Eve.’ She was Adam’s companion, a helper and mother to be for multiplication and replenish the earth according to what Lord God talked to Adam.

What fruit was forbidden and later eaten in the Garden of Eden?

The fruit that was forbidden in the Garden of Eden and later eaten continued to be like a mystery from Genesis up to revelation. But only the source of information about this fruit is in the Holy Bible even if they have used mysterious language to mean what was that fruit. The forbidden fruit is not like the mango fruit, apple fruit, banana fruit, and others found in the forests or we purchase on the market and consume every day from normal trees God created on earth. Absolutely no. Consuming these fruits couldn’t open mankind’s eyes and know that they are naked. Even the science can prove that. Making love to woman (Eve) was the forbidden fruit and later eaten in the Garden of Eden.

Is making love to a woman means to eat?

The answer is yes. Literary in the Cambridge dictionary ‘forbidden fruit’ means something, especially something sexual, that is even more attractive because it is not allowed. Therefore, the old serpent (not a snake which is the serpent cursed) was drawn to Adam’s wife-the forbidden fruit. If we check in the Holy Bible, we can find that a woman who engages in sexual intercourse with another husband’s wife is eating. ‘‘This is the way of an adulterous woman: she eats and wipes her mouth and says, ‘I have done nothing wrong’.’’ (Proverbs 30:20 NIV). This is to certify that making love to woman is called ‘eating’ in the Holy Bible’s language.

That is the reason why all punishments Lord God gave the woman are related to the sex. To the woman He said, ‘‘I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.’’ (Genesis 3:16 NIV). In the book of Job, the Bible says, ‘‘Mortals, born of woman, are of few days and full of trouble.’’ (Job 14:1 NIV).
