The Nine Types of Angels

Using the Bible as her guide, Marlene maintains a Christian website that shares information about what it means to be a Christ follower.

Angelic Beauty

I Believe in Angels

I was raised in a Christian household, so my belief in God and supernatural existence was a given. However, during my childhood and most of my adult life, I rarely considered the validity of angels until today. So, I started a journey to uncover my innermost thoughts about angels. I read a lot and thought about encounters in my life where I may have met face-to-face with an angel. At the time, I considered those encounters lightly, but now after doing some research I believe strongly, that my encounters were in fact meetings with angels.

Here is what I have discovered and what I believe about angels. Angels are spiritual beings who were created to fulfill God’s desires. They are messengers, overseers, and deliverers of God’s sentences whether rewards or punishment. When angels interact with human beings, they can be invisible, audible, and/or take on the human form in order to accomplish whatever task God has commanded of them.

Angels are mentioned at least 108 times in the Old Testament and 165 times in the New Testament. If you have an online Bible, type in the word “angel” and read scriptures that speak of angels. Jesus Christ, son of God is sometimes referred to as the Angel of God or the Angel of the Lord. In addition to Christ, there are nine types of angels. These angels are placed on a hierarchy scale and grouped into spheres or choirs.

1. Seraphim (singular Seraph) – Isaiah 6:2 - These angels are closest to God. They praise God and represent His love. There are only four of them. Their primary mission is to protect the throne of God. They have six wings: two cover their faces, two cover their bodies, and two cover their feet.

2. Cherubim (singular Cherub) – Genesis 3:24 and Ezekiel 10:1-22 - These angels are the second highest in the nine hierarchies of angels. They are intercessors of God. Their mission is also to protect the throne of God. They are fierce angels. When they come to earth, they have the great power of apocalypse nature. They have four faces: one of a man, one of an ox, one of an eagle, and one of a lion.

3. Thrones – Colossians 1:16 – Their name literally means a throne or highly ornamented chair. These angels dispense God’s divine judgment. The lower hierarchies of angels need the Thrones to gain access to God.

4. Dominions – Colossians 1:16 - These are the angels of leadership, regulating the duties of the angels. They give power to heads of government and other authority figures. They have the appearance of humans with wings.

5. Virtues – 1 Peter 3:22 - These angels are known as the Spirits of Motion and control the elements. They govern all nature and perform miracles. They provide courage, grace, and valor.

6. Powers – Colossians 1:16 - These angels have the task of controlling the border between heaven and earth. They are warrior angels who fight against evil. They are the angels of birth and death.

7. Principalities – Colossians 1:16 - These angels look over groups of people. They are in charge of the world’s nations, cities, and towns. Their duties include taking charge of religion, politics, and the duties of the angels on earth below them.

8. Archangel – 1 Thessalonians 4:16 - This angel is the chief angel, guardian of people and all things physical. The archangel appears only in human form and has the task of being God’s messenger to people at critical times of need.

9. Angels – Throughout the Bible from Genesis to Revelation - These angels act as our personal guardians. They deliver prayers to God and God’s answers and messages to us. They have the task of nurturing, counseling, and healing us.

To be complete, I need to mention that there are also fallen angels, demons as we know them. They exist. I believe in them, but I do not entertain them by discussing them. I mention them in this paragraph for readers who might question that I did not give credit to “all” angels.

Hi Mona! Thank you very much for your fine compliment. I am glad you found it to be informative. I actually learned a lot during the research and verification process.

Mona Sabalones Gonzalez from Philippines on July 29, 2020:

This is a very interesting article, articulately written, and most informative. Thank you for the links at the end. It's like adding icing to the cake.

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on May 20, 2020:

Thank you Treathyl FOX. I will take a look at your link.

Treathyl FOX from Austin, Texas on May 20, 2020:

Hi Marlene! I know it's been a while but I came back. I found this link and I thought you might find it interesting. It is about Muslim beliefs.

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on May 20, 2020:

Hello Robert, I don't really know how the baby-look came about. I think the depiction of the Cherubim as a baby is just the world trying to come up with a visual of something less scary than the biblical description.

Robert Levine from Brookline, Massachusetts on May 20, 2020:

Hi Marlene,

I was familiar with your description of Cherubim previously. But how did the popular conception of Cherubim as having the appearance of babies arise?

Joe on October 12, 2019:

how would i get connection with angels

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on August 01, 2019:

Hi RoadMonkey! Years ago, my pastor was talking about angels and it peaked my interest. Like you, I was not aware of the various types of angels until I started doing some research. Since I use the Bible as my guidebook, I was happy to find the answers in a place that is reliable for me.

RoadMonkey on August 01, 2019:

I did not know there were all these different classes of angels. Thanks for writing about this.

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on May 01, 2019:

Treathyl FOX, thank you for coming back to clarify for others that the angels mentioned in the Bible are male. People actually do need to know that fact. I am curious to read what Muslims believe about angels. Maybe there is another article somewhere about it.

Treathyl FOX from Austin, Texas on April 29, 2019:

Yes. I understand what you mean about finding photos or other images of angels. I just wanted to make that point for others who visit your HUB. A fellow writer had published an article about what Muslims believe about angels. It was interesting but the article was unpublished and I can't find it.

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on April 29, 2019:

Hello Treathyl FOX, I understand what you mean about the angels mentioned in the Bible being all male names. Still, when searching for photos of angels, it is almost impossible to find one of a male angel. In keeping with perspectives, the photo accompanying this article is not necessarily an angel, just an image that depicts what people relate to as angels. I selected the accompanying photo for no other reason than the model was quite "angelic" looking.

Treathyl FOX from Austin, Texas on April 29, 2019:

People are always fascinated by the topic of angels. As you say you have a Christian background, I often wonder why people show a photo of a woman when speaking of angels, yet the Bible always describes angels as “men” and the ones named have male names.

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on March 31, 2019:

Thank you for your feedback, Marc Hubs. My research is based on what I could physically find as noted in the bible. If there are more archangels mentioned in the bible, would you mind sharing that scripture with me? Thank you so much.

Marc Hubs from United Kingdom on March 31, 2019:

Interesting certainly but i know from my experiences with angels that some of this information isnt true.

Jeff Zodd, there are a lot more than four archangels. There are seven before the throne of God and there are also more than that.

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on March 30, 2019:

You will be amazed, HollyHumDrum, at how much information is available about angels. Being discerning when sorting it all out is what will consume you. Enjoy your search!

HollyHumDrum on March 30, 2019:

This was an ah ha moment for me! I am definitely going to be doing some research! Thank you.

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on December 11, 2018:

Thank you for your kind comments, Jason M Quinapondan. I am very interested in angels, as well.

Jason Behm from Cebu, Philippines on December 11, 2018:

It is very informative about angels. I am also a believer of angels. and I appreciate the information you give. It helps me draw a much clearer picture in my mind while reading. I am so fascinated with it. Thanks for this hub.

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on December 05, 2018:

Hello Jeff Zod. Thank you very much for your feedback. Also, thank you for providing the names of the Archangels. If you have time, I would love it if you could provide a biblical reference for these names. I could not find a specific reference, so I excluded the actual names.

J Zod from Nairobi on December 04, 2018:

This is a very interesting article. Some people have claimed to have had contact with angels.Although their claims can not be verified, the existence of angels has never been in doubt.thank for sharing this informative article.

There are four Archangels : Raphael, Michael,Gabriel and Lucifer(the fallen one now called Devil or Satan)

Patricia Scott from North Central Florida on July 15, 2018:

Me other way to explain it and am so very thankful. ps

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on July 15, 2018:

Hi Patricia! I have had encounters in my life where the only explanation is that they were encounters with angels. Thank you for always reminding me that my angels are here for me on this journey through this life.

Patricia Scott from North Central Florida on July 15, 2018:

You had me from "I believe in Angels". As you must know from the way I sign my comments I really do believe that our encounters with Angels is real. How blessed we are to have both earthly Angels and celestial Angels in our lives. Well done. Angels are indeed headed toward you today ps

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on November 23, 2017:

Hello DREAM ON! You pose a very interesting question that has me wondering if there are angels for pets. I have no idea about animals other than the human type. But, I do agree that pets and other animals are valuable to us humans. Thank you for your positive feedback. God bless you, my friend.

DREAM ON on November 14, 2017:

I have bought a book or two on angels and after reading your hub you explained angels in wonderful detail. I was raised a Protestant and went to church my whole childhood. In church we talked about God but very little about angels. I wonder why there aren't more stories in the magazines and pictures of angels everywhere. It is as if people believe but are afraid to let other people know. I believe in angels and I talk to God and his angels daily. I have been blessed to live this long in my life when others I know have passed. Are their angels for animals because I love animals so much. They should be protected too. I believe our pets give us unconditional love that makes us feel good. How can we not appreciate so many animals that provide food for us on a daily basis. Thank you for writing and sharing this wonderful hub.

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on October 04, 2017:

Hello ROMMEL ORTEGA, the more I read, the more I determine that a lot of what we believe about angels is based upon interpretation of scriptures. It is all fascinating, to say the least. I just read today that, as you mentioned, two thirds of the angels remained in heaven with Saint Michael, and one third went to follow Satan.

ROMMEL ORTEGA from METRO MANILA on October 04, 2017:

These are Catholic/Universal conception of the hierarchy of angels. Judaism has ten, just do not know the specifics. Trivia: According to the book of Revelation there are a third of angels who joined Satan. Two thirds remained in heaven with Saint Michael.

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on August 13, 2017:

Hi Rex Mwape, thank you for your kind words blessings.

Rex Mwape on August 13, 2017:

Great hub Marlene. The angelic ministry was very important to the Old Testament prophets, Jesus Christ and to the New Testament apostles. Today unfortunately, many believers in Christ are not really aware about angels. So, their ministration to them seems limited. Thanks for the hub and I have been blessed. I will keep reading more of your hubs.

Hello mika,

I am surprised and glad you feel the way you feel about Donald Trump. I, too, believe he has been sent to help fix the corruption in the world. It is good that he has thick skin, because there are a lot of powers working against him. I pray for him every day, along with others. I am sure he will get the job done.

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on April 04, 2017:

Hi Donald. I am only worthy enough to attempt to describe the nine types of angels by using the Bible as my resource. As such, I am unable to state which, if any, angel can give you money. I believe in prayer and through prayer and the resources available on earth, perhaps money can be earned through working at a job. Or, if I might dare to be funny, I'll say you could be lucky enough to win the lottery. But, if you want the serious answer, I would say prayer to God and working at a job that pays money is the best way to get money.

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on February 09, 2016:

Thank you, Rajan. I grew up believing in angels. But, it wasn't until I started doing some research that I discovered there were different levels and types of angels. It is fascinating to me.

Rajan Singh Jolly from From Mumbai, presently in Jalandhar, INDIA. on February 08, 2016:

Though I know there are angels I had no idea that they were of these types. Thanks for sharing this information.

Yes, Kiss andTales, you are so right. Angels are here to help us and so we must keep our doors open, always.

Kiss andTales on November 23, 2015:

How do we know that angels are interested in humans?

Angels have always been interested in humans and in Jehovah’s purpose for the earth and humans. (Proverbs 8:30, 31; 1 Peter 1:11, 12) It must have made them very sad when Adam and Eve rebelled. They must be even sadder now to see that most humans have disobeyed Jehovah. But when someone repents and returns to God, the angels are joyful. (Luke 15:10) The angels are very interested in those who serve God. Jehovah uses angels to help and protect his servants on earth. (Hebrews 1:7, 14) .

Angels are very busy getting God's and Jesus work done.

That work involves a preaching work that comes to your doors , when people shut their doors to JW. You also are declining Jesus invite to hear his message that will deliver life into a new world, education is used to help many. When you welcome you

Also welcome an Angel that monitors this visit.

Hello Betsy Jacobs. Thank you for your wonderful feedback. I'm glad this was helpful. My objective was as you said, to explain things to you from my perspective, hoping the answer would become clear when seen from the viewpoint of a person who was just learning about the subject herself (me).

Betsy Jacobs on March 27, 2014:

Thank you for this nicely informative article. By stating your understanding of your own perspective on this subject I was better able to understand the rest of it. All too often a simple answer to a simple question I would ask would be drowned out by someone who would know the answer but have no idea how to teach it. It works better for my understanding if I get an answer that's not completely subjective when my first questions out of necessity have to be objective. Nicely done.

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on November 13, 2013:

Ma'am Marlene, Blessed be to God for inspiring you in the establishment of this way of providing a method for the communication about our Beloved Angels of all types with each other. There are many thousands of persons who try so hard to seek out the mysteries of the Angelology system, yet without success. Marlene, may you continue with your holy work to educate others in this most important of matters. Respectfully, in the Name of Saint Michael the Archangel of Jerusalem. the Rev. Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on February 04, 2013:

Hmmm, ib radmasters, I smile because you are right, God does know. At the same time, God didn't write the Old Testament, humans did - with the guidance of God. At least, that is what I beieve. I think, as we go through life, we jot down notes here and there. We only jot down the things we think are important to remember. I know that if I were to write down my whole life story, I would neglect to mention a name or two. The story would be the same without the actual name of the person involved. Maybe I'm naïve. But, I think the omission of a name here and there might be humans just telling the story from a human point of view. The story is the same whether we state the name or not. I can't count the number of times I've told a story and said something like, 'Oh, there were two to three hundred people at the convention." Were there two or three hundred people at the convention? I dont' know. I'm just using my best guestimate. Would the story change if there were two versus three hundred people? Hey, listen, the story that gets my attention is the story where people say there were one or two whatevers. I feel compelled to ask whether there was one or two, because it's easy to know the difference between one or two. But, two to three hundred, well, it might be difficult to eyeball the difference. For my example, it doesn't really matter what the exact number is. The point is there were a LOT of people at the convention. And, if I'm telling a story and if the story is the same whether you know the number of people or the name of the characters or not, I'll still tell the story, but I may not mention the names.

Imagine how it was in biblical days. They didn't have computers. One person wrote the story, other people transcribed the story - not copied and printed - but hand written.

I am more interested in the story itself. I wasn't there. Joe, John, or Jean weren't there. None of us were there and it's not like they had iPhones back then and could take photos and post pictures to Facebook and all. It was different then and it is different now. The bible is merely an account of things that happened during those times. People told stories in their own way and I think God was OK with that, so long as it was the truth. The names and the exact number doesn't really matter. Does it? Why? The story is the same without the specifics.

This is all just my opinion, which is based solely on what I have read for myself - not on what I have been taught, but what I have read and placed my own personal eyes upon. What I deduce is shared here and I clearly label it all - 'Just my opinion.'

Thank you for your feedback. I value your opinion and welcome all that you have to share.

Brad Masters from Southern California on February 04, 2013:

The point is that God should know, and that leads us to assume that God didn't partake in the writing of the Old Testament.

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on February 04, 2013:

Hi ib radmasters! This is just my opinion, but I don't think anyone can answer the question of how many angels there are in total, because I believe there are some angels that are not specifically mentioned in the bible. This article merely addresses the hierarchy of angels. I don't think there is a way, humanly possible to know who all the angels are, because angels do not always make themselves known. They are just here, overseeing in some instances - acting upon God's command in other instances. Depending on which bible you use, you will find angels mentioned almost 300 times. You will see only two angels (Gabriel and Michael) mentioned by name (three if you count the evil Satan).

As far as Adam and Eve, angels do not always keep us from doing the wrong thing. They can, however, help us through trying times. When Adam and Eve ate from the tree of knowledge, they were removed from the garden by an angel sent to disperse God's order. I'm thinking the angel who removed Adam and Eve was from the Thrones hierarchy. That is my best guess, because the Thrones are in charge of dispensing God's order. They could have also been taken out by the Cherubim. Nothing I have read gives a definitive answer. I did read that the Cherubim (second highest in order) was sent to guard the tree of knowledge. Since I use the bible as a reference, I have to say there is not a specific mention of which angel removed Adam and Eve from the garden. I merely use deduction for my answer. The bible does, however mention the Cherubim as the angel sent to guard the tree of knowledge. Some people say that the Cherubim was also the angel who removed Adam and Eve from the garden, but the bible does not specifically state it definitively. Again, it is a matter of deduction on their part. No one really knows for sure.

Brad Masters from Southern California on February 02, 2013:

How many angels are there in total, and where were the angels when Adam and Eve were eating from the wrong tree?

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on January 30, 2013:

Hi alocsin! Thank you for your comment. You bring up a special point about how you have only seen the archangel and the cherubim depicted in art. It could be that the other type of angels are more difficult to "capture" in art. Now, you've got me wanting to find more angel artwork.

Aurelio Locsin from Orange County, CA on January 27, 2013:

I'd only heard about some of these types of angels, such as the archangels and cherubim, and have seen them illustrated in artwork. I didn't realize there were all these types. I'm wondering how they would compare, visually and artistically, with the archangels and cherubim. Voting this Up and Interesting.

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on December 17, 2012:

Hello Hallowmyst! Thank you for your feedback. It's way above my imagination to try to figure out what God was thinking when he created humans. I'm not sure where to begin such research. The study of angels is an enlightening venture. I do hope that you come back here to let me know what you find.

Hallowmyst on December 16, 2012:

Very informative. I am doing research into angels myself. One of the first questions I am delving into is why did God create Man when He already had angels? Your insight would be welcomed!

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on December 10, 2012:

Thank you, By Lori, for your comment. I have learned so much about angels and continue to read all that I can. I never cease to be amazed at all the testimonies about angels and how they have served people who believe and need them at all times.

What a great Hub ! Really interesting. I love reading about Angels. Nice to write Hubs that help people too.

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on November 17, 2012:

Hi Diane, I am honored and happy that you would want to share this with others. That is why we are here - to spread the good word. This is a hub that I wrote one day after long hours of prayer from a desire to share more about angels. The verses were "given" to me to use here, otherwise, I would not have known on my own where to go to get them. Yes. I am happy for spiritual guidance. Bless you, Diane for your love of the Lord and all that is about our Savior.

Diane Minton from Evansville, Indiana on November 17, 2012:

Oh, this is wonderful...there are so many facts about them that we do not fully know in our hearts, I have seen one once when dreaming and a lot of times when awake. I believe that they are always around us to protect for sure......I like the way you include the Holy Scripture to back up your beliefs and knowledge about them. God did create them for so many reasons that HE knows. Our access to help from God is so infinite! I like the way we can ask Him for warrior angels when we are doing thinks and can sense the struggles and how we have Peace when calling on the Holy Spirit to protect and guide and keep us....You have done a beautiful work here. Hello rickzepeda, thank you for your comment. Yes, I am glad to have angels watching over me and protecting me. We all are so blessed to have a Father who loves us so much.

You are right, they are protectors. Daniel 6:22 God has sent his Angel to shut the lion's mouth

Hello GoldenThreadPress, it is a wonderful feeling to be among believers. The more I read about angels, the more I am happy, like you - that I have a guardian angel to help me through life.

GoldenThreadPress on October 18, 2012:

What a wonderful Hub! Richawriter, one of the commenters, asked about Gabriel. Gabriel is the Archangel that ushered out Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. Gabriel played another significant role when he announced to Mary that she would bear a Son, named Jesus. St. Michael the Archangel drove Satan out of Heaven. St. Uriel (or Ariel) is the Archangel of families and students. What amazes me most about angels is that those that are in Heaven only had one chance to make their choice whose side they were on. I'm glad that my Guardian Angels chose wisely! Keep up the great work!--Deb

Hello Michele. It is my pleasure to share information about angels. Like you, prior to writing this hub, I was not aware of what all angels did and who they were. It was a learning experience which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Michele Travis from U.S.A. Ohio on October 16, 2012:

Thank you so much for writing this hub. It is amazing to me, I had no idea how many angels there were and what their names were. I also did not know what they doing for God.

Thank you again. Voted up.

Marlene Bertrand (author) from USA on October 14, 2012:

Hello Dear DrBobDoggart, I'm back with what I have discovered about the archangel. I searched the Bible and so far could find only two references mentioning the archangel. These are the verses I found:

1 Thessalonians 4:16 (NIV)

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

Jude 1:9 (NIV)

But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”

My interpretation is based upon the fact that the definite article "the" is used instead of the indefinate article "an". Since the word "the" addresses a specific or particular subject versus the word "an" which addresses a general subject, I read these verses to mean that there is only one archangel. In Jude 1:9, I take it to mean that Michael is "the" archangel.

In wanting to be thorough, I read more than one version of these verses and all of them refer to "the" archangel. Based on syntax and my understanding of the meaning of words, I am going to stick with my interpretation that there is only one archangel and that archangel is Michael. I hope I am correct in my interpretation. If I am not correct, then the Lord will set me straight. And when He does, I will be sure to come back here to retract my statement.

Thank you for challenging me on this topic. Whenever I have to answer to statements that I have made, it causes me to seek further and to look deeper for understanding. For that, I am grateful.

Hello DrBobDoggart. To answer how I came to be interested in angels, you may believe or question when I say that one morning I had a burning desire to write this hub. I knew little about angels, but for some reason I could not rest until I wrote this hub. So, I sat down and typed what I knew about angels (which was not much). Before publishing, I read through a few sources, including the Bible for verification, and typed some more. Since that day, I have been very interested in angels.

I must admit that I have only been able to find one archangel in the Bible. I can't remember the verse, but I believe I read in the Bible that there was only one angel known as the archangel and that angel was Michael. I will search for that verse and when I find it, I will show it here in the comments. Since the Bible is the reference source that I use, if I don't find it in the Bible, then I consider it nonexistent. I could be wrong, but I am a little bit narrow minded that way. It is the only way I know how to be consistent in my belief structure. But, you are absolutely correct when you say that in the end all will be revealed.

Thank you for stopping by and for sharing more of your life and your faith in our Lord.

Much love and many blessings to you.

Robert Michael Rankin Doggart from Eastern Tennessee, Federal Democratic Republic of the USA on October 05, 2012:

My Dear MarleneB from Northern California,

Thank you for your kind and loving remarks regarding the comments I have stated heretofor. While I have no wish to be pedantic in even a minor way, there is significant evidence that there are seven ArchAngels: Michael, Gavriel, Raphael, Uriel, Metatron, Selaphiel, Jegudiel, and perhaps even an eigth; Barachiel. Each of Them have their assigments and stand at the ready to assist in this most difficult world in which we reside. It is unfortunate that our historical records have been manipluated by so many faiths to the point that conjecture enters these discussions. However, I do not believe this to be of importance, because of course, few individuals even approach a personal relationship with any of them. You are obviously one of the blessed to have had an experience in your encounters. I, too, have been humbled in this way.

Those who would inquire "What difference does it make?" are both fortunate in that they question this topic, but at the same time are of need of the knowledge that without the ArchAngels, life on our tiny planet would be even more unpleasant than it is already. The great British Philospher/Economist Robert Malthus postulated on this issue centuries past, and his conclusions bring comfort to those who are deperate for guidance on how to conduct themselves.

May I inquire, how did you come to be so very interested in this essential issue? I would share that my way was decades of painful prayer, harsh physical discipline, and deprivation, despite that I am fairly well off in a material sense.

I shall close this short entry with the statement that I carry prideful wounds on my body that are representative of the heraldries of St. Michael, Gavriel, and Raphael that can never be erased because they have been burnished into me. The fourth mark is the symbol of how I shall die in the human sense. These wounds are meaningful to me in a manner that cannot be described, but that bring me comfort every day, every waking moment, that I expect to carry on to my end of time. The discovery of the origins of the chevrons was abstruse, and upon taking the marks, I was physically and emotionally ill for weeks in an attempt to deal with the "knowledge" that was sent my way. The unshakable faith I now hold dear can never be challenged by any negative origin.

In the end, of course, all will be revealed, but those few of us who have consecrated our immortal souls to the Sacred Heart in an unchanging purpose to serve the Christ by and through our Oath to Him, have His love so deeply imprinted upon our hearts that we shall nevermore be able to be separated from Him. Dawn shall bring glory forth, and we shall live and die, bound forever in true and courageous loyalty to our Lord.

May God bless you for establishing this "hub" for the education of those who so desperatly seek purity of Heart at one with our Lord, and revealing if but a small portion of the mysteries of a Christian Life and Faith.

With the Kindest Respect, Robert Rankin Doggart, Ph.D.

DrBobDoggart , I thank you dearly for sharing your experience. You are tied to a very influential angel, the one and only archangel Michael. What a glorious existence. Your near death experiences can attest to the magnificence of having the mighty hands of such a powerful angel protecting you. Bless you for sharing. I hope others read and find acceptance of the Lord and angels through your testimony.

Robert Michael Rankin Doggart from Eastern Tennessee, Federal Democratic Republic of the USA on October 03, 2012:

The knowledge of the existence of the various types of Angels is largely dependent on visceral prayer and life experience. In my case, having 13 near-death experiences, added to many other occurances that did not come into my sphere of belief until I had a crisis of Faith, I can assure all that Angels absolutely exist, as I feel their presence and power to protect, indeed, to alter the course of human events. Saint Michael the ArchAngel of Jerusalem was my Roman Catholic Confirmation choice, which meant little to me at the time. But now, after all these experiences, I am protected by Saint Michael, apparently cannot be killed until my time is selected for me. I acknowledge and readily accept this premise. Perhaps the most interesting part of my relationship to the Great ArchAngel is the fact that I am authorized to speak on her/his behalf, and the protection I am priviledged to "enjoy" is extended to others in my family through me. So there you have it. In case anyone thinks this rather odd, I am not a nut-case, having five college credentials and occupation as the senior specialist worldwide in my engineering concentration. For your consideration, Ladies & Gentlemen; there is no way around long-suffering and intellect. With kind regards. Non sum qualis eram.

Hello Richawriter. Gabriel is a gorgeous name for a child. Your son will, no doubt grow up to do great things. I have heard that the meaning for Gabriel is "Hero of God." But, I have not heard that Gabriel is an archangel. In fact, my understanding is that there can only be ONE archangel. I don't know. I use the Bible as my point of reference and so far (in the Bible) I have only read the name of one angel referred to as an archangel and that is Michael. No other angel, that I have read thusfar, is referred to as an archangel. Of course, if upon further reading, I happen to read otherwise, then I'll come back here to update my findings. Thank you Richawriter, for your positive feedback. It is good to hear from you.

Richard J ONeill from Bangkok, Thailand on September 18, 2012:

Hey, this is an interesting hub, Marlene B.

I searched for and chose Gabriel as the name for my son because the meaning was 'Hero of God.'

Is Gabriel an Archangel or just an Angel? Which type would youy say he is?

I had never heard of the 9 types before. Good work and thanks for teaching me some new knowledge!

Peace to you. :)

This is one subject I wish I knew more about. I could only put the information together from research and compilation gained from others. I do wish I knew what type of angels were with Adam and Eve. They were allowed to speak directly to God. But, judging from the nine types of angels listed here, my guess would be that when Adam and Eve were thrown out of the Garden of Eden, they were met with the Thrones, because the Thrones are the angels who dispense God's judgement. I need to add that this is my best guess and is open for challenge as my answer is based upon my own (limited) understanding.

MarleneB, you did a great job presenting the facts related to these celestial beings. This is a hub I'll come back to again and again. Angels are inspiring. Thank you!

Brad Masters from Southern California on July 09, 2012:

So what angels were with Adam and Eve??

Tammy from North Carolina on July 09, 2012:

Outstanding hub! I didn't realize there were so many angels. This Christmas my daughter was 2 and we went a beautiful church music program. She kept tapping me on the shoulder while looking at the eves saying, "look Mommy, look at the angels." I didn't see them, but it really moved me. I believe in angels too. Shared and pinning. Fabulous, fabulous hub!
