The Forgotten Person Of The Godhead

I search the scriptures to discover scriptural truth and the deep things of God.

The Truth

From the book of beginnings (i.e. Genesis) to the book of Revelation (the last book of the Bible), we are made aware of the fact that God is a triune being, often referred to as the Holy Trinity. There's God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Bible says that they are one—Godhead. What binds them together is love. Many Christians are very familiar with the Father and the Son. But that's not all. There's the third person. And many times He is forgotten and not regarded. This is due to ignorance about the knowledge of scripture and deception from the pit of hell. God the Father and God the Son are actually the Holy Spirit. If there is no Holy Spirit, there's no God and there's no Jesus. And I will explain. The Bible says "God is a Spirit and they that worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." That's the first one. God the Father is a Spirit. Secondly, the Bible says that the "Virgin Mary conceived after the Holy Spirit came upon her and the power of the Most High overshadowed her." God the Son was conceived of the Holy Spirit. Now what conclusion can you make from these two passages of scripture? The Holy Spirit is real. I hear people say things like "...But I don't like Holy Spirit stuff, 'it'(wrong) is too deep and boring..," "...I can tolerate God the Father and God the Son, but I can't tolerate the Holy Spirit, I don't like 'it'..." These are comments out of ignorance and comments as a result of alienation from the truth about God. The Holy Spirit is part of the Godhead and must be considered as such.

His Personality

The word Spirit is from the Greek word Pneuma. In Pneumatology ( the study of the Holy Spirit), the Holy Spirit is sometimes referred to as:

  1. The Spirit of God (Genesis 1:2; Genesis, 6:3; Judges 14:6; 1 Samuel 11:6)
  2. The Spirit of Truth ( John 14:17; John 16:13; 1 John 4:6)
  3. The Spirit of Grace (Zechariah 12:10; Hebrews 10:29).

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead. Remember He is a person (He), not an 'it' as most people think. In John 14:16, Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as 'He', "... even the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him, you know him, for he dwells with you, and will be in you." So the Spirit is a person. He only manifest Himself in different forms. He manifest Himself in the form of

  • Sound of many waters
  • Tongues of fire
  • Dove
  • Voice
  • Wind
  • Oil
  • Etc.
The Holy Spirit Manifests Himself In the form of Fire

The following Characters Affirm the Personality of the Holy Spirit

  • He hears and speaks (Mark 13:11; Matthew 10:20; John 16:13; Acts 2:4).
  • He can be grieved or vexed or even be resisted (Isaiah 63:10; Ephesians 4:30; Acts 7:51).
  • He instructs ( Nehemiah 9:20)
  • He teaches (John 14:26).
  • He searches and researches (Romans 8:26-27; 1 Corinthians 2:10).
  • He leads and guides (Romans 8:14; Galatians 5:16)
  • He groans (Romans 8:26).
  • He witnesses ( Romans 9:1)

The Role of The Forgotten Person of the Trinity

As I have already pointed out, the Holy Spirit may have been forgotten out of ignorance of His role in the life of the believer. In Luke 24:49, Jesus told His disciples to tarry in Jerusalem until they receive the gift of the Holy Spirit from above. Jesus knew the vital role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer. Let's examine some of His roles below:

  • He is the source of power to all believers (Luke 4:14; Acts 1:8; Romans 15:13).
  • He is the main agent of salvation (John 16:7-8). The Holy Spirit is the one who gives believers full conviction that they are saved by bearing witness with our spirit (John 15:26; Romans 9:1).
  • He is our counsellor (John 14:26; 15:26).
  • He is the author of tongues and helps us to pray better by interceding for us (1 Corinthians 14:14; Romans 8:26; Acts 2:4).
  • He teaches us all things; even the deep things of God (Nehemiah 9:20; John 14:26; 1 Corinthians 2:10,13).
  • He is our seal. When we become born again, the Holy Spirit is the seal testifying of the fact that we are God's, and hence guaranteeing us of our inheritance in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 1:13; 4:30).
  • He leads and guides us. In fact, if you are not led by the Spirit of God, you are not one of His own (Luke 4:1; Romans 8:14; Galatians 5:16, 25).
  • He helps us to show forth fruit against which there's no law (Galatians 5: 22-23)
  • He is the source of all spiritual gifts (I Corinthians 12:7-11).

Considering all these vital roles of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer, I challenge you, my dear reader, to have a sweet fellowship with Him. Without the infilling of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we are simply not Christians. Our Christian life is incomplete without the work and intimacy of the Holy Spirit.

The Way Forward

In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, Paul of Tarsus met some disciples at Ephesus. When Paul met them, he asked the obvious question: Have you received the Holy Spirit since you believed? Everyone of us need to ask this question. They replied, "no, we have never even heard that there's a Holy Spirit." And Paul asked again, "Into what then were you baptized?" They replied, "Into John's baptism." What I want us to note here is that we are not the only people who are ignorant about the work of the Holy Spirit. But today I want to challenge you to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit into your life. The starting point is to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your saviour, because the Holy Spirit is only and can only be received by believers. Unbelievers can't receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

To those of us who have already received the gift, I would like to reiterate that receiving the Holy Spirit is more than an experience. He is a Divine Person who comes to have fellowship with you, live with you and dwell in you. You are His dwelling place. People make comments such as: "... I have not experienced the power and the presence of the spirit since last month..." This is not Biblical. The Holy Spirit lives right inside of you. You only need to get more real with Him.

Listen to the Methodist hymn below. Please pay particular attention to the words. "Holy Spirit Truth Divine."

You're welcome.

That's the reality of Rhema. Thanks for sharing your practical life stories about it here. It's worth it.

Miebakagh Fiberesima from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NIGERIA. on August 17, 2020:

Call it rhema or zoe, you're welcome.

Miebakagh Fiberesima from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NIGERIA. on August 17, 2020:

At another time, I ask a single father to collect his 3 years old girl from school. As usual, he expect a 5 years old girl to return with her. A car run down his girl. She died. That's hardly a voice from the Holy Spirit. But my spirit pick the zoe message from the HS.

Ernest Festus Awudey (author) from Ho, Ghana. on August 17, 2020:

Yes, that's the word of God spoken to us at a particular time for a specific purpose. In your case, to save your house from burning and flooding. That prompting is the word of God, but the specific Greek word is 'rhema.'

Miebakagh Fiberesima from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NIGERIA. on August 17, 2020:

Ernest, agreed "this something" is rhema, it is not audible. I have on its alert/prompting left my office, church service, and save my house from electric fire, a flood from water pipe...

Ernest Festus Awudey (author) from Ho, Ghana. on August 17, 2020:

That's very true Cele. I did that because many of us are ignorant about this fact. Thanks for yours.

Cele on August 17, 2020:

I like the way you highlight on the fact that the Holy Spirit is a person. Nice exposition on the Holy Spirit.

Ernest Festus Awudey (author) from Ho, Ghana. on August 16, 2020:

Very true Mr Miebakagh, the treasure is always in earthen vessels. Thanks for the contributive comments.

Miebakagh Fiberesima from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NIGERIA. on August 16, 2020:

Can you? I doubt it. This is where the Holy Spirit comes helping search us and bring the verse "to remembrance." Much thanks again.

Miebakagh Fiberesima from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NIGERIA. on August 16, 2020:

...we try reasoning out a verse of scripture deep in memory lane at that state of tension.

Miebakagh Fiberesima from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NIGERIA. on August 16, 2020:

More seriously, we may forget the scriptures at a moments notice, or at a point of emergency. We try...

Ernest Festus Awudey (author) from Ho, Ghana. on August 16, 2020:

Mr Miebakagh, I am sorry you find my word 'research' as vague. The Bible is the inspired word of God. This word of God recorded in the Bible is called "Graphe.' The Holy Spirit gives us further word beyond what's recorded in the Bible called "Rhema." Hope you understand. And that's why we make certain comments like "Something told me to or not to..." and the like. So that's it. Searching and Researching are related words. They are not very different.

Miebakagh Fiberesima from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NIGERIA. on August 16, 2020:

Hi, what do you mean the Holy Spirit "researches"? Is he then a human being? That the Bible says he "search all things, the deep things of God" is not a fact that he undertakes a research to decide if there is a mistake, omission, differfnces in the scriptures. Seriously, we may forget the scriptures at a point of need. But the Holy Spirit search our hearts and bring that specific scripture to mind. I hope you're copying.
