Mother: Dictionary Definition

Noah Webster did a good job defining most words. There is a word in the dictionary where he fell short. He defined "mother" as "the female parent." He is right on that account, but a mother is more than merely the female parent.

Webster was not alone when he minimized mother with his short definition. Others dictionaries give the same information about a mother. A mother is more than the one who gives birth to a child.

The descriptions of a mother are endless. There are so many descriptions of a mother that there is not enough room in the dictionary to list all the things a mother is. If all that a mother does was recorded in the dictionary, there would not be room for other words.

According to Livestrong, a mother is a selfless, loving human being who sacrifices many of her wants and needs for the wants and needs of her children.

What a Mother Is

A mother is a protector who makes her child feel safe. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing a small child holding the hand of his mother when they are out and about together.

A mother is the first teacher a child has. A baby imitates her mother to do many things. When the child grows up, the mother is the one who answers her child's many Why's. She is a walking encyclopedia who has to explain to her children many of life anomalies.

When her children grow up, a mother is still on hand to advise them about the best route to take about the major things in life.

A mother is a disciplinarian who uses her skill in a loving way to train up her children to do well in the outside world such as at school and at work.

Being a mother is the most rewarding job a woman will ever experience, and here is something to consider: Without children, there wouldn't be mothers, and without mothers, there wouldn't be children.

What a Mother Does

A mother works hard to make sure her child is equipped with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to make it as a competent human being.

A mother is a selfless, loving human who sacrifices many of her wants and needs for the wants and needs of her children.

God created a mother to be all she is and to be able to do all she does for her children. However, God has not left the mother to take care of her children alone. He has equipped a mother with what she needs to take care of her children just as God takes care of her.

It's a child right to ask questions, and it is the mother's right to answer them.

Mothers all over the world will celebrate Mothers Day on Sunday, May 13 where their children will acknowledge them with flowers, gifts, and breakfast in bed or brunches.

Even though children will honor and celebrate their mothers, it is no secret that God has equipped mothers to fulfill the role He had created them to be.

It is a win-win situation for mothers and children when God is involved. He knows what's best for them, and He sees to it that children get what they need and mothers are equipped to give them what they need.

More Than 'A Female Parent'

A mother is much more than "a female parent." It is an understatement to limit the definition to only that.

However, we know why Webster and other writers of dictionaries couldn't write a longer definition for a mother. That's because there is so much to say about mothers that the information could be in several volumes instead of the limited space for the meaning in the dictionaries.

Happy Mother's Day to all Mothers.
