There are 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac, they are: the rat, the ox, the tiger, the rabbit, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the sheep, the monkey, the rooster, the dog and the pig.

The Traditional Chinese Names of the 12 Zodiac Animals

As we all know that China is a country located in the East Asia, with a very long history, there are many many interesting stories in the culture of China, and the Chinese Zodiac is just one of them. It is said that thousands years ago, in the ancient China, the wise Chinese ancestors got the idea of taking the animals to represent the years, so that they could remember the years clearly enough.

The legendary story of the famous 12 Chinese Zodiac Animals: In the ancient China, people often could not remember the year that they were born, so they can not know their ages clearly, then the legend story coming, the Jade Emperor called the animals of the world to help people to solve the problem. At last, there are twelve animals came to the governmental building of the Jade Emperor, all of them became representatives of the Chinese Zodiac. The Jade Emperor of legend gave each animal of them the right to represent one year of the twelve years as one circle of the time.
