What Do You BELIEVE?

The Articles that affirm Jesus Christ

I would like to share with you the APOSTLES CREED. This spiritual treasure dates back as early as the 6th century, a half century after the last writings of the New Testament. What a wonderful and meaningful creed it is. It has been recorded in history that on the day of Pentecost directed by the HOLY SPIRIT the Apostles gathered together and composed this amazing marvelous extraordinary creed.

I was surprised to find out how many were not aware of it.

This is the oldest of all Biblical creeds. It is said that each of the Apostles contributed to its composition. I personally think that it is a brilliantly written spirit filled “work of art” that enriches the soul. It contains (12) twelve articles which affirms the LORD JESUS CHRIST and the TRUTH of GOD'S HOLY WORD.

Keep in mind that today in this 21st century we have free access to the complete Holy Scriptures in the form of “The Bible.” This was not the case in the earlier centuries. There was only a select few that had actual access to the written Word. The Bible consists of the Old and the New Testaments. The Old Testament is the history of the beginning of life and the many recorded events therein that followed. Also descriptive detailed evidence of the various generations and revelations about the preparation of the coming of Jesus Christ. The New Testament is His arrival, birth and His manifestation of wonders to the world. It is also inclusive of the life and wonders of His Apostles/disciples and many others. The Bible contains 66 brilliantly scribed Sacred Books that were inspired by GOD written by the hands of dedicated men. It is a progressive work of the Truth unfolding.

There are (39) Thirty-nine books in the Old Testament and (27) twenty-seven books in the New Testament. The Old Testament was written primarily originally in Hebrew and some in Aramaic. It was then translated to Greek. How amazing that there are over 5,600 Greek Manuscripts to validate just the New Testament.

A bit of Bible History

Did you know that the Bible contains 1,189 chapters and 31,102 verses. It was written by over forty authors. The original manuscripts were not divided into chapters and verses. It was Cardinal Hugo de Sancto Caro who began this process in 1244 to about 1248. He at the same time was creating a concordance of the Latin Vulgate to help people have the ability to look up the scriptures. The modern version was revised by Stephen Langton an Archbishop of Canterbury in England. This was also used by the Wycliffe English version that was eventually circulated in 1382. The current system we use was first published in the Geneva Bible in 1560 prior to the King James Version which was published in 1611.

For some the "Apostles Creed" has become a ritual that is simply repeated during worship. But if you listen attentively you will hear and see that it is so much more. It vividly gives one a great descriptive synopsis of Jesus’ origin and purpose in our lives.

I pray that you are blessed, encouraged, enlightened and inspired by this marvelous magnificent biblical creed!

The Apostle’s Creed

This is a marvelous affirmation of one’s FAITH! Before repeating the "Apostles Creed" one first is usually asked “What do you believe?” Upon stating:

“I Believe in God the Father Almighty! The Maker of Heaven and Earth. And in Jesus Christ the only Son of our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit. Born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified died and was buried. The third day He arose from the dead. And He ascended into Heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I Believe in the Holy Spirit. His Holy *Catholic Church. The Communion of saints and the Forgiveness of sins. The Resurrection of the body and LIFE everlasting. Amen!”

*Catholic meaning God’s Universal Worldwide Church.

I believe, profess, proclaim, preach, teach, "Live out Loud" and holdfast to the principles therein the; "APOSTLES' CREED!"

Good hub. Good stuff, the Apostles' Creed. I believe it too. A song we sing in Church reminds me of it, that, as you said, all true believers in all churches and places are His "Church";

Goes like---

We believe in God the Father

We believe in Christ the Son

We believe in the Holy Spirit

We are the Church and we stand as one....

and etc...

Your writings are always concise and well-written, graceful and full of Hope, DeBorrah. Hugs and blessings sweet lady.

Interesting history but they did take anything feminine out of the creed. It did include Father and Mother before it was changed after the 6th century.

Nobody, Yes, it is and I agree "an affirmation of a Christian's life and FAITH!" Thank you my brother for visiting and sharing as always, In HIS Love & Blessings!

Robert E Smith from Rochester, New York on January 18, 2010:

The Apostle's Creed is a statement of Christian faith. The term catholic is usually not capitalized when I have read the creed in the past. I think it is confusing to a lot of people because of the generic term being so close to the label taken by the Catholic church. This hub is an affirmation of a Christian's life and faith.

Elder DeBorrah K Ogans (author) on January 18, 2010:

Every church has its positives and negatives so to speak. The Apostle's Creed is certainly one of the positives in those denominations that use it. I agree with you, "It vividly gives one a great descriptive synopsis of Jesus’ origin and purpose in our lives."

Thank you for sharing and explaining this great statement of the Christian faith.

Heart4theword, The word "catholic" referred to in the "Apostle's Creed" means whole or universal! Catholic meaning the Christian Church at large. Yes it happened before the Catholic Church was formally formed... Thank you for visiting, I hope this has been helpful Blessings!

heart4theword from hub on January 14, 2010:

Interesting you wrote about this...someone shared this with me a couple of months ago. I really don't understand, how if this wasn't anything to do with the actual Catholic Church, why was Catholic Church mentioned in the creed. Did the creed really happen before the Catholic Church was ever formed? I'm trying to understand this in a deeper way, any comments?

Elder DeBorrah K Ogans (author) on January 14, 2010:

While I was signing in, Creativeone59 beat me to the number 1 spot! Good for you!

I have always been impressed not only by the origin and development of The Apostle's Creed but by the fact also that after so many thousands of hands and eyes that have been over it since, the same truths always come through and consistently confirm each other.

On a sidenote, I've been to the forums and heard the demonic whining and arguing from the atheists and all the assorted other babbling. They denounce what we follow, yet they have absolutely nothing of any substance whatsoever to stand for.

DeBorrah, thank you for sharing this. You made my day!

Benny Faye Ashton Douglass from Gold Canyon, Arizona on January 14, 2010:

That was uplifhting and very touching Lady D, thank you so much for sharing. Blessings to you. creativeone59
