What is Spiritual Alchemy?

Spiritual alchemy is the transformation of the soul. It is creating the Philosopher's Stone. It is Enlightenment. It is transforming the material into the spiritual. It is the reaching of cosmic consciousness. There have been many names for it. But ultimately it is the same idea.

Here is a brief overview of the seven stages of spiritual alchemy.

(There are also three sub stages, which I will go over in a later article, called Blackening, Whitening, and Reddening.)

Calcination

The first stage of spiritual alchemy is Calcination. "Stuff" from your subconscious is brought up to the surface of the conscious mind.

Negative emotions, desires, obsessions, not-so-good things you have done in the past, weaknesses.

This subconscious material is dredged up from the depths of your psyche, where it can be dealt with in later stages.

It is a time of deep introspection and self-reflection. Calcination is a mirror into your inner being.

This part of the process can be humbling, even painful to the one undergoing this stage. Subconscious material may be brought up all at once, or over a period of time.

This is the beginning of the "Blackening" stage of spiritual alchemy.

Dissolution

Dissolution is the second stage of spiritual alchemy. Old materialistic worldviews and beliefs are dissolved.

The first two stages result in ego death, which I have discussed in other articles. This is a time of great self-reflection.

The person undergoing the process is left at a loss, for the spiritual aspect has not entered into the picture yet. So there is a great hole left where old values and worldviews once reigned.

Thus begins the "dark night of the soul". This stage can lead to sadness, feelings of loss, and temporary depression. There is also great confusion.

Separation

The third stage is called separation. As its name implies, this is the stage where the mind begins to separate the good from the bad, what to keep, and what to discard.

This is the processing and analysis of data. What are my true values? What are the things I really want in my life? Separation is about looking at options.

You are beginning to see there is more to life than just the material. You know something else is going on.

You are beginning to see that something is missing and that you are going through a process of change.

Conjunction

Conjunction is the fourth stage, and the most mysterious. There is an influx of the spirit.

This is what is called the Lesser Stone. This is when true spiritual transformation begins to happen.

This is the beginning of the "Whitening" stage of spiritual alchemy.

Fermentation

Fermentation is the fifth stage of spiritual alchemy. This is the second, yet different, ego-death in the process.

The in-dwelling spiritual energy must be taken in and processed. This is when a new awareness begins to seep in.

This is yet another confusing stage when the psyche is bombarded with new, spiritual information.

It may come in the form of dreams, intuition, even visions. You begin to take a deep interest in spiritual matters, even if you never have before.

Distillation

Distillation is the sixth stage. This is when the refining process begins. The bad is discarded, and the good emphasized.

The wheat is sifted from the chaff. Spiritual energies are integrated into the psyche. This is the ultimate purification.

In this stage, the distillation is repeated over and over again, until the psyche is fully refined. Matter and spirit are continuing to be integrated and sublimated.

Coagulation

The seventh and final stage is Coagulation. Spirit is incorporated to the maximum extent.

You have sifted through, analyzed, and processed all of the detritus of your psyche, discarding all that is base and materialistic.

This is the stage of Enlightenment. This is the Greater Stone. You reach a higher state of consciousness. Some say this is when You reconnect with the divine.

This is the "Reddening" stage.

You come out a better, more spiritual person in the end. This is perhaps the only stage in the process that is pleasant.

It is at this stage when you will realize what the whole thing was about.

Conclusion

Spiritual Growth is painful and not easy. There are a lot of tough experiences to go through. There is much learning about yourself and about reality, and change.

It takes much introspection and a lot of courage. It is not for the light-hearted.

Most people never go through it.

But if you do, you will find there is gold at the end, and it was all for your benefit.

Alchemy is not the real alchemy, because it is spiritual in nature. The gold you create is not physical gold, but the growth and maturation of the spirit.
