Faith to Step Out

The text showing Jesus and Peter walking on water is among the most well known passages in the Bible. (Matthew 14:22-33)

Jesus is approaching the boat and Peter asks the Lord to call him over to Him. Jesus does exactly that, so Peter gets out of the boat. That was the first step and took great courage.

Sometimes we just need the courage to step out, to do something we haven't tried before. Where can we find that courage?

If we have a faith in God and what we have in mind is a Godly pursuit we can find our courage in exactly the same place as Peter found it.

Philippians 4:13 - "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." - King James Version

Peter had his eyes on the Lord, he was safe. If we seek Christ's strength instead of our own we can be safe too.

Faith to Keep Walking.

When Peter left the boat he walked towards Jesus. The scripture doesn't tell us how far he walked but it is very clear the Peter walked.

He was walking on water!

There was just one reason that I can think of that enabled Peter to walk on water. Peter was able to walk on water because he trusted Jesus.

It's amazing what we can achieve when we trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 3:5
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;"
- New International Version (©1984)

When Faith is Weak

Whilst walking on the water Peter became afraid and began to sink. Jesus says quite clearly that he began to sink because of doubt and lack of faith (although he had more faith than the others that stayed in the boat). Jesus reached out and held Peter. He did not let him drown.

When our faith waivers the Lord is still there to give us His hand and to pull us to safety. We are always safe in the hands of God.
