Yes, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 2 Timothy 3:12
Every believer who faithfully attempts to serve God will suffer persecution. Persecution comes because the devil and his fallen angels hate mankind, especially those who steadfastly obey God. This hatred stems from Satan felled insurrection against God that cost him and one-third of the angelic host their estate in heaven. The spiritual father of all unbelievers, Satan desires, to destroy God’s creation that supplanted his dominion on the earth. Although we cannot see him, his deeds manifest themselves on a daily basis.
Many scoff at the notion that an unseen spiritual realm influences world events; nonetheless, a hidden maniacal enemy lurks in the shadows. His success rest solely in keeping mankind from coming to the revelation that everything that happens in the physical (carnal) realm emanates from a spiritual origin. The Bible is replete with stories that illustrate how the devil clandestinely seduces mankind into embracing evil. For example, Ezekiel 28:1-14 describes how the spiritual king (Satan) was actually ruling Tyre unbeknownst to the earthly ruler. Learning that man is a spiritual being at war with the devil is a critical lesson on the road to spiritual maturity and awakening to the real world.
In 1987 during a Twilight Zone like dream episode, I learned of this ongoing eons old spiritual battle raging in a dimension seldom seen with the naked eye. The dream unfolds with my friends and I driving to a local strip mall to purchase clothing and school supplies. While walking into the mall, a strange vision occurred as though our eyes had been opened to see behind the scenes of reality. Suddenly, we saw charging at us beings that looked like humans but were in shape and stature dwarfs. In the spirit of rebellion, they approached ravaging everything in their wake. Their faces were disfigured with hatred and jealousy for they were the children of an enchanted serpent. We immediately realized the danger. With a burst of adrenaline-fueled energy, we raced in every direction to escape to safety. I reached my car and turned the key. My car accelerated in an explosion of power. As I reached the road of escape, the dwarfs blocked the way. Knowing that it meant certain death to stop, I pushed the throttle and crushed my oppressors under my tread. While driving home, I thought of my friends. However, a reassuring inner voice said, “They’re safe.” Later in the day, I returned with my father to survey the damage. When I beheld what should have been ruins, I was amazed. The mall revealed no signs of a riot.
Perplexed, I asked my father what happened. Did I just imagine the whole thing? Seeing that I was becoming increasingly agitated as we drove around the mall, he lovingly explained, “I opened your eyes to understand the forces that battle against you. For the gift of Christ in you provokes the serpent to seek your destruction. The dwarf beings are the evil spirits whom he assigns to persecute the righteous. Yet I am faithful to prepare a way of deliverance. For you were made to tread on serpents. After battles, I, as a good father, will bring you back to those sites so that you may receive instruction and wisdom for perilous times. Therefore, rejoice because I am with you always, even in the battles of this life.” Then I realized that God had used the dream to teach me about spiritual warfare.
