Sometimes writers distance themselves from religious subjects. Religion is still taboo to speak about. Read about it instead.
Studying Doctrine and Covenants has brought with it an interesting side-effect. I will explain, but first I need to answer the question of the title, which in turn may explain the side-effect of studying this catholic (universal) book of commandments and covenants called Doctrine and Covenants of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Actually, it is not that book of scripture that I studied the week of January 4th to the 10th of the next week 2021. Reading in the Pearl of Great Price under the Joseph Smith History is what is the focus, but the Doctrine and Covenants is the subject of study for the Come Follow Me curriculum of the Church.
That was a mouth full, yes. It had to come out because later in the article, time will not permit for asides like this. The message is important. To know about each of the records mentioned in this first paragraph, a link exists at the end of this article. Please read this first before you hurry off to find out about hose books--books of immense importance.
Much of my writing this year has focused on the things that I am studying during my religious devotionals at home through the resource I mentioned before, Come Follow Me. In 2020, I focused most of my writing on the Book of Mormon, also a book of scripture I studied using the resource Come Follow Me.
This article is about my personal witness of God, though I mention Joseph Smith and others because their experiences activated my own leading me to the same conclusion as did theirs: God lives and He still is willing as ever to speak to people who will listen. As it was with them, so it was with me.
It goes to show us that everyone does not need to be a prophet to know God, but willing to received a connection to the Holy Spirit to receive revelation from God. I am willing, though not always able--willing still, though!
God lives and He still is willing as ever to speak to people who will listen. As it was with them, so it was with me.
Okay What is the Side-Effect?
The side-effect is a greater connection to the Spirit of Revelation. You probably thought I would drag it out. I don't have time for that. In order to illustrate what I mean, I must share with you my conversion story to Jesus Christ, then to His Church, and finally to His mission--three things. It may take three different articles. Each separate thing waterfalls into each other, which would make an interesting visual--a waterfall that falls back into its source! I suggest it that way to demonstrate the interconnection faith has produced in my experience, which I am confident will resonate with some of you who read.
The side-effect is also a desire to share specific feelings about intimate connections with God. I hope that all who read this will share in their own articles or the comments below personal encounters that revealed to them a connection to God be it of any faith, even of no faith.
The side-effect of studying the Scriptures is an overwhelmingly pleasant desire to share what we've learned.
I do not declare all religions inspired by God. I don't know if that is true. What I do testify is that Jesus is the Christ of this world and its God. He has a church that works within the societies of humanity to bring salvation about one person at a time.
This is the type of thing found in Scripture.
Did not David, who cheated on his wives, hundreds of wives, to have an encounter with one woman lose a child of that union because of his actions? He prayed and mourned over the child, but the child died. This type of thing happens to real people. The Scriptures are filled with the lives of real people who suffered and joyed.
Jesus hung on a tree covered in blood before His mother Mary. She was His mother. She saw her little boy, a man at the time, but still her little boy hurting in front of her and she could do nothing! Real people went through this.
Judas Iscariot realized that he had sent his teacher, his rabbi, his friend to his death following an agreement with the politically motivated leaders of his faith community to identify him during the night for 30 pieces of silver--coins! He hung himself in grief. He killed himself, a real person.
These lives in these canonical books existed. the Doctrine and Covenants represent modern scripture/ During a time in human history where more records exist from the holiest to the most irreverent, we have scriptures that record God's words to us of people we know existed without a doubt. The evidence is there of their lives. Joseph Smith was shot to death for daring to say God spoke to him and that all men should be free, including the slave. He died. His kids lived. His wives lived. It did not end with him just like it did not end with Moses dying in the wilderness. He left people behind.
I do not declare all religions inspired by God. I don't know if that is true. What I do testify is that Jesus is the Christ of this world and its God. He has a church that works within the societies of humanity to bring salvation about one person at a time. That church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You don't have to agree with me, but I do have to tell you so that when I stand before God, I can say I told you what I was told by the Spirit.
The Why to Doctrine and Covenants
The words in this article are not verses written and interpretations given to those verses. What is written are the thoughts that came to my mind as I studied Doctrine and Covenants Section One and the history of the prophet who contributed to its constitution most, Joseph Smith. As I study and feel the need to share with the world that God still speaks to prophets and has never stopped speaking to His children at any time someone had the faith to pray to Him, I hope you can read and feel the convicting power that modern revelation gives of the reality and divinity of Jesus Christ as the savior of the world from the darkness of hate and despair. Christ is about hope--that through Him we will be equal partners with him in the heavens as He promised in the New Testament and reiterated through Paul in the same library.
In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. [John 14:2-3]
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. [Romans 9:16-17]
Behold, I am God and have spoken it; these commandments are of me, and were given unto my servants in their weakness, after the manner of their language, that they might come to understanding. [Doctrine and Covnants 1:24]
