A Guide to Shamanic Drumming

“I drum therefore I am.”

The above first shamanic drumming quote is probably one of my favourites because it literally says it all in only five words. (see my list of drumming quotes below)

I've been a drummer for all of my life - as far back as I can remember. I was that kid who banged or tapped on anything and everything that would make any kind of a cool sound. I was that kid that everyone was annoyed with whenever I was in church... in school or visiting at someone's home. I was always being told to 'cut that out!" Even to this day, I still annoy my sister!

One of my fondest childhood memories will always be the time, when I came home from school on my 10th birthday to find a 'real' full drum-set waiting for me in the front hall! It was the best birthday present ever!

My mom especially bought them 'used' for me for my birthday and holy wow - was I ever surprised and super-thrilled from my insides to out. They weren't the prettiest drums being that they were used as they were covered in a very weird ugly green paisley wallpaper - and inside the bass drum I found rumpled up old local newspaper pages of the Vancouver Sun dated from the early 60s. Also painted on the front of the bass drum skin, in very thick green and black oil paint was the name, "The Heard" - most likely some garage band that never made it because I had never 'heard' of them.

Not long after my birthday though, I was soon banished to the outdoors onto the enclosed front porch to play my 'new' drums! Probably a reason why I'm half-deaf to this day.

And so... needless to say, I've been a drummer all my life and I have always drummed in a mindful, spiritual way and on the shamanic path too. In my earlier years I played drums all through elementary school, jazz and concert bands, all types of percussion - and later, in high school and after, played drum set in many attempted rock bands and other configurations that never really 'made it'.

At one point I gave that world all up and chose to pursue the 'frame' drum instead - and was guided to the shamanic drum - the 'healing' drum. I now have a shamanic healing practice... I teach sacred shamanic drum-making (drum-birthing) workshops and hold shamanic circles and gatherings.

Over the years, I've been gathering shamanic drumming quotes that I love and have written a few of my own.

So, I'm thrilled to be sharing my own compiled list of some of the inspirational quotes that are related to the shamanic drum and drumming including some related spiritual drumming quotes. Enjoy!

“I always giggle when someone tells me they can’t drum – I say to them, “of course you know how to drum... the very first sound you ever heard was your own mother’s heartbeat when you were inside her womb... drumming, drumming and drumming... You know how to drum!”
– carol weaver

“Drum circles create physical vibrations that relax the body. They also massage the heart and the emotions.”
– Arthur Hall

"When you take your drum to a rhythm circle and play it with your community, healing happens. It does not matter if the group's focus is purely social or ritualistic. If you come and drum, the healing is compounded because everyone is putting their spirit into their drum, and their hearts are open. You get and give a rhythmical massage that is compounded by the number of people in the circle and the energy they are sharing with each other.”
– Arthur Hull

“Feel your chest resonate with the drum.”
– John Diamond, MD

"Qilaut, the Eskimo wind drum, is a circle that has no beginning nor ending, in which we all belong... the great creator who made us—holds the handle and every time creator touches upon the rim, creator hears the heart-beat of humankind. The stronger the heartbeat the healthier humankind is."
– Angaangaq

“The Creator wants us to drum. He wants us to corrupt the world with drum, dance and chants. After all, we have already corrupted the world with power and greed....which hasn’t gotten us anywhere – now’s the time to corrupt the world with drum, dance and chants.”
– Babatunde Olatunj

“One of the most powerful aspects of drumming and the reason people have done it since the beginning of being human is that it changes people's consciousness. Through rhythmic repetition of ritual sounds, the body, the brain and the nervous system are energized and transformed. When a group of people play a rhythm for an extended period of time, their brain waves become entrained to the rhythm and they have a shared brain wave state. The longer the drumming goes on, the more powerful the entrainment becomes. It's really the oldest holy communion.”
– Layne Redmond

“What are you drumming into your life in this present moment?”
– carol weaver

“This is the story of the drum. The drum keeper is an old woman; she lives north at a lake far away. First came the thunder and the lightening; this was the first wave. The second wave came, and the second wave was a continuous noise, continuous sound...”

“It is often said that the first sound we hear in the womb is our mother's heartbeat. Actually, the first sound to vibrate our newly developed hearing apparatus is the pulse of our mother's blood through her veins and arteries. We vibrate to that primordial rhythm even before we have ears to hear. Before we were conceived, we existed in part as an egg in our mother's ovary. All the eggs a woman will ever carry form in her ovaries while she is a four-month-old fetus in the womb of her mother. This means our cellular life as an egg begins in the womb of our grandmother. Each of us spent five months in our grandmother's womb and she in turn formed within the womb of her grandmother. We vibrate to the rhythms of our mother's blood before she herself is born. And this pulse is the thread of blood that runs all the way back through the grandmothers to the first mother. We all share the blood of the first mother - we are truly children of one blood.”
– Layne Redmond

“What had become lost to us, due to the spiritual amnesia inherent within incarnation in the mundane world, is now directly accessible to us once again--through the direct experience of Shamanic Drumming!”

– Mickey Hart

“I am the drum... You are the drum... We are the drum... Boom bada pa ta... (pause and repeat) Play it as you say it...”
– Babatunde Olatunj

“A drum is a voice, alive and feeling as with any voice. When it speaks then we must listen and honour the message with our best and noblest selves, for it is a voice with great power and it is a voice that is a gift to us from a great being. If we do this, then our lives will be full and happy.”
- Louis W. Ballard, Quapaw-Cherokee

“The idea that there are harps in Heaven is a common misconception. When we get to Heaven there will be DRUMS!!!”

It takes commitment and apprenticeship to learn how to find a drum’s sweet spot. But once you do, the potential arises for contacting the drum’s second voice ... the spirit side of the drum.”
