A believer, in recovery, looking to the Bible to know who I am in Christ.

The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life. Proverbs 22:4

Blessed are the humble, for they will inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5

Dirty Diaper

The bible has much to say to me about being humble. The above verses are but a sample.

Humility comes before honor. It seems like Western culture, certainly American culture has that backwards. So much of popular entertainment is about being aggressive and arrogant.

"Look how great I am," seems to be the way to the top.

So it seems.

But it's funny. Nobody likes working with arrogant people. People love those who are humble. And I'm not talking about that fake humble put on either. That smells like toddler's dirty diaper, right?

What's the big idea?

And the bible makes it clear that humility, not arrogance, brings rewards. I mean it even says that the reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches. Riches.

That sounds backwards.

I've seen some of those get rich quick YouTube videos. They don't lean on being humble. That's not one of the bullet points.

Yet, the word of God teaches this humility over and over.

And Jesus summarizes it all in the beatitudes when He says that the humble will inherit the earth. Wow.

What does that even mean? That's a big idea. And He wants us to get the big idea.

I am not God.

Now, I have this idea that if the Bible says for me to be a thing, or to have an attitude, then, it must be possible. With His help of course (and that makes all the difference).

So I CAN be humble. It is possible. I'm not even sure what that looks like in me. I wrestle with pride every day. I have to bring it to the Lord and lay it at His feet. I have to say to myself, "I am not God. I serve Him."

Now here's a thought that goes with this idea of humility: I am powerful. He has given me a spirit of power. I see these two, humility and power, brought together in the men and women of scripture. King David is a good example of this. He killed the giant in humble power.

Lord, I ask for this humble power today. Teach me to be joyfully, powerfully, lovingly humble. You ask it of your children. I submit to you today declaring, "I am not God. I serve Him." I love You because you first loved me. Blessed be the Name of the Lord.
