The Welsh Revival

Many have claimed that the Welsh Revival of 1904-1905 was the greatest revival in history, based on its tremendous power and worldwide impact. The revival’s visible leaders were largely children and teenagers. Evan Roberts, the revivals best known leader was only 26 years old. There were no great speakers or dynamic leaders, only nameless believers, sold out to God and fully obedient to the voice of the Holy Spirit. Many of the world’s most renowned Christian leaders came from all corners of the world to marvel and sit at the feet of these children entirely under the powerful influence of the Holy Spirit.

One of the central themes of the revival was that God wasn’t looking for great eloquence, impressive leadership or great wisdom, He was looking for those who were humble and obedient to the voice of the Spirit, who despised worldly acclaim and desired above all else to exult God only! One truly astonishing feature of this revival was the absence of planning and promotion, everything was done under the spontaneous leading of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus was always the main attraction in the revival, speakers and singers were not announced. When the meetings began there was no telling what was going to happen. Evan Roberts would enter a meeting and say nothing for hours or preach the entire time. Singers who planned to perform often kept silent if the Lord had other plans, other times singers would break out in spontaneous song. Roberts turned down interviews with world famous newspapermen and famous leaders and refused to get his photo taken other than for family pictures.

The Prayer Revolution

The revival experienced the power of prayer, seeing dramatic answers to specific prayers and the focus of prayers towards a burning agony for the lost! People in wales were praying everywhere, small prayer groups became swelling crowds at any time during the day or night. Whole communities rose up in prayer for neighboring towns, revival caught on like wildfire wherever they went! Prayer meetings often lasted till the early hours of the morning and people feared leaving lest they miss out on something wonderful.

Entire factories shut down so the people could pray! There was nowhere you could travel in Wales to escape the influence of the Spirit of God, the burning love and zeal of every Christian was evident wherever you went! Thousands upon thousands were being saved, mostly through the witness of individual believers.

The Origins of Revival

The seeds of the Welsh Revival were plants many years before; God was preparing the hearts of people all over Wales to carry the Ark of revival. Eloquent and influential Welsh ministers were being broken and humbled before God. They no longer sought to impress their congregations with outward performances but instead were driven by an inward passion and a desire to follow the leading of the Spirit! A holy desperation and a revelation of their true condition was what drove them to seek the depths of God.

Before the revival, Wales was a place in spiritual darkness. People were obsessed with soccer, drinking and a host of worldly pursuits. Crime and prostitution were at record high rates. Even in there worldly prosperity, people were dry and empty inside trying to fill a void that only God can! It was under this backdrop that God was preparing a young man who worked in the pit of a coal mine from the age of nine years old. His name was Evan Roberts.

Evan Roberts was born in Wales in 1878. After his father injured himself in a mining accident, he went to work in the mines at the age of 9, to earn about 75 cents a week.

Roberts had a passion for God and to preach at a very young age. He committed himself to prayer and to gaining a more intimate relationship with God for a period of 13 years before the revival in Wales. He went to prayer meetings almost every night of the week; the focus of his prayers was for a mighty visitation of the Spirit of God! Roberts entered a grammar school at the age of 26 with the goal of entering a college to study for the ministry. He was never able to complete his studies because God had other plans!

Divine Encounters

In the spring of 1904, Evan began to have powerful visitations from the Lord. This happened for several weeks on every night between one till 5 am. These encounters left him in a state of awe and wonder; he feared anything that would hinder these experiences. Soon after, a convention was held at Blaenanerch, with Evangelist Seth Joshua. Evan attended the meeting with his friend Sydney Evans and 19 other youths. Evan was visibly shaken at the end of the when Seth Joshua declared, “Bend us oh Lord”. The Spirit of the Lord, so branded this message on Evans heart that it never left him. The Spirit of the Lord came upon him with great power and he was filled with a supernatural passion and compassion for the souls of men.

A short time later, Sydney Evans witnessed Evan in his room with a holy light shining from his face. He asked Evan what was happening and Evan told him of his vision of the nation of Wales being lifted into the heavens and for 100,000 souls. Later, while in a chapel, Roberts had a vision directing him to go to his old friends and young people. The entire chapel was then filled with a heavenly light whereas he could scarcely see in front of him. Evan went to the Pastor at Moriah chapel and asked to hold services for the youth. That evening after a prayer meeting, Evan asked the young people to stay to so he could speak them. Only one girl and sixteen adults stayed to listen. The chapel was filled with a cloud of unbelief and Evan was tempted to doubt what God had showed him. Maybe he was tempted to think that his visions were the result a grand scheme of his imagination or worse yet, the onset of mental illness.

Building Momentum

The following day services were held in nearby Pisgah but this time many more were in attendance. It was here Evan Roberts would speak on the importance of being filled with the Spirit and he would highlight the four tenants that became central conditions for living in the Spirit and for revival. These tenants are what guided the Welsh revival. The tenants required renouncing of all doubtful behavior, harboring no unforgiveness, unquestioning obedience to the Spirit of God, and public testimonies to the work of God.

On the following day November 3rd, Roberts returned To Moriah chapel and taught the children the pray, “Send the Holy Spirit to Moriah for Jesus sake”. He impressed upon them the necessity to believe in order for the work of the Spirit to move forward and to believe that Christ is able to remove any obstacle. The lord was increasingly laying this on his heart.

Faith and expectation continued to build with each meeting. Roberts spoke on Ephesians 5:18, exhorting to not be drunk with wine but to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Within a week the meetings had grown to an intensity never witnessed in times past!

On November 7th The Moriah chapel was packed as it had never been before! Evan Roberts opened to Malachi 4:2-3 and made a prophetic declaration that it would be fulfilled in Wales immediately. The question was would the people in Roberts hometown accept the instrument God had chosen to light the fire in Wales and worldwide. Many believe this was a crucial point where the revival was held in the balance, would the people have the humility accept God’s messenger? They did, the Spirit of God was so heavy in that place that the people in mass cried out in agony for the lost and in repentance of their sins. Cries of great joy and desperation were heard in mass throughout the meeting which lasted beyond 3 in the morning!

On November 9th and 10th reports or the revival had reached the secular press and from that time on, almost every major newspaper worldwide had stories about the revival. With the Moriah chapel packed to capacity, the people of Loughor opened their homes for meetings. People from all over the world began to arrive in wales. Food had to be brought in because people didn’t want to leave the glory they were experiencing.

The revival then began to spread throughout wales. Prayer meetings sprung up everywhere. Conviction of sin was so strong that taverns emptied with men leaving their drinks behind as they were gripped with a holy fear. Soccer stadiums were emptied because everyone was at the revival. Police had nothing to do because crime had completely stopped and the jails were empty. Virtually all debts were paid in the entire nation. Horses and mules had to be trained to respond to different commands because they had become accustomed to responding to curses. Now no one dared curse in all of Wales out of a fear of God!

Revival Spreads Worldwide

Over the preceding 18 months, Evan Roberts and five young ladies from Wales, would light revival fires all over Great Britain and worldwide. William T. Stead, one of the most powerful men in Great Britain at the time, had visited the revival and was interviewed. They asked what he thought of the revival, he responded “that it didn’t really matter what he thought of the revival but what it thinks of me and everyone else”! In the book, “The Great Revival in Wales” by S.B Shaw, the account of the interview with William T. Stead was quoted on pg56 as saying this;

“… For this is a very real thing, this revival, a live thing which seems to have a power and a grip which may get a hold of a good many of us who at the present time are mere spectators. … The revival is something like a revolution; it is apt to be wonderfully catching”

When asked if he dreaded the revival coming his way he said;

“No that is not so. Dread is not the right word. Awe expresses my sentiment better. For you are in the presence of an unknown. You have to read ghost stories and can imagine what you would feel if you were alone at midnight in the haunted chamber of some old castle and you heard the slow stealthy step stealing along the corridor where the visitor from another world was said to walk. If you go to south Wales and watch the revival you will feel pretty much just like that. There is something there from another world. You cannot say whence it came or whither it is going, but it lives and moves and reaches for you all the time. You see men and women go down in sobbing agony before your eyes as the invisible hand clutches at their heart. And you shutter. …”

When correspondence from the revival reached other places around the globe, revivals were often ignited there. Frank Bartleman and William Seymour of the Azusa Street revival had frequent correspondence with Evan Roberts, both revivals impacted the other.

The revival spurred a wave of missionaries to be sent out all over the world. The Pentecostal and charismatic movements which now encompasses about a third of all Christians worldwide, can trace their roots to either the Welch or Azusa Street revival. The Welch revival is a foretaste of an even greater revival that’s to come, that will sweep in multitudes before the return of Jesus at the end of the age.

OLUSEGUN- Great to hear from you again my friend!

It's always wise to learn the lessons of the past, so we can know what caused success and what mistakes to avoid.

Good Revival history. When we know of the pasts, it would help in our focus. Good work.

Wba, this sounds like a powerful move of God. Wow! Thanks for sharing. When God does something, it is something that no person could have done. This was definitely a "God" thing. (author) from upstate, NY on March 08, 2013:

shofarcall - I'll take your word for it about Jesse Penn Lewis. Sounds like they were true friends of Evan Roberts. God bless and have a wonderful day!

shofarcall on March 08, 2013:

Hi wba,

Wow, Well, I have never heard this said of Jesse Penn-Lewis before!!! And I have done quite a bit of research on her and Evans and the revival. From what I know, she was fully involved in the revival.

All I know, from personal experience as well, is that when someone has a nervous breakdown, NO ONE generally wants to know them. This couple took Evan Roberts in and cared for him in a desperate time. Can you imagine the gossip/murmerings that would have gone around about Evans then? And about Jesse Penn-Lewis and her husband and their motivations?

What I do know is that when I suffered from a similar affliction, seeing people was often terrifying depending on how I was on any particular day. the terror came from either not remembering them or my association with them, or not being able to or wanting to follow their conversation. I often asked the person who was staying with me at the time to either tell visitors I was out, or sleeping or whatever so as not to have the stress or anxiety of having to socialise.

Having said that, I cannot express just how much I value that time of my life now and the experience and insight it has brought me and how much it has changed me, I believe for the better. I see with very different eyes now.

It certainly has not soured me on your hub, brother!

God Bless. (author) from upstate, NY on March 07, 2013:

shofarcall- Glad to meet you too and thank you so much for your comments! Boy I'm not that familiar with the ministry of Jesse Penn Lewis! I’m afraid the author of my source did mention her in a pretty unflattering way. He contended that Jesse Penn Lewis used her influence on Evan Roberts to promote her own ministry and that her and her husband convinced Roberts to step away from the revival for fear that he would steal God's glory. The author contended that ironically this led to the end of the revival.

The author also stated Jesse Penn Lewis and her husband exerted so much control over Roberts, that they wouldn't even permit close friends and relatives to visit him even for a long time after his nervous breakdown. He also stated that the book "War on the Saints” was a somewhat paranoid reaction to some of the excesses in the revival and that even though Roberts name was on the book that he wouldn't have agreed with most of what was written in it.

I hope this information doesn’t sour your view of this Hub. Maybe the author had a distorted view of Jesse Penn Lewis. I don't know enough to say if it’s true or not.

shofarcall on March 07, 2013:

Great hub wba! although I was surprised not to see Jesse Penn-Lewis mentioned as she played a huge part in the revival too and many books are left behind from this great woman of God of what took place during that time. I don't have my info with me right now....but I think one was called "War on the Saints" and another book that springs to mind was regarding the taking of the land by Joshua. They are not everybody's cup of tea, but I think, at some stage of our Christian walk, we would do well to read even some of it. From what I understand, Evans did eventually suffer from a nervous breakdown and Penn-Lewis and her husband cared for him. He lived with them.

So glad to meet you. I will be reading more of your hubs. God Bless. (author) from upstate, NY on February 07, 2013:

Joanmaynard- Thank you for your generous comments! We had a visiting minister recommend to us a book that records the first-hand accounts of the children impacted at the revival at Azusa Street. I too am convinced that the awesome power and glory that was poured out at Azusa Street is but a foretaste of the revival that is yet to come! You’re absolutely right; we just have to get sick and tired of being sick and tired! Amen and Blessings

Joan from St Kitts on February 07, 2013:

Thank you for posting this inspirational article. I have read much about this Azusa phenomena. It all began with a few people who got fed up of being fed up of their circumstances and surroundings. They decided to seek God.

God is ready to do the same thing again .He just needs available seeking vessels. (author) from upstate, NY on January 09, 2013:

Rev Earl Jackson- Thank you for your insights! God surely has to bring revival, the sad history of the church has form without power as the norm. You see many denominations and christian movements mimicking what God has done in past revivals and it only makes them weird. The way God worked at that time is not necessarily the way He's going to work now. God never changes but His methods often do.

On the other extreme though, there are many who are so afraid of deception and error that they've tied God's hands in regards to how He can move. They sit back claiming that if God wants a revival He'll have one. They think that there is no responsibility on their part to bring revival. They never pursue revival and expect it to just happen, they don't take the risks of obeying the voice of God, because their afraid of looking foolish. (author) from upstate, NY on January 09, 2013:

Kathryn L Hill- God is surely no respecter of persons, we can all have what they had if were willing to pay the price. Although when God moves powerfully in our individual lives, its never just for us, He means for our breakthrough to be used to set others free.

Kathryn L Hill from LA on January 08, 2013:

Based on the story, there seems to be a way for us to have it in our own individual lives: by inviting the Holy Spirit in through our own focus and devotion. (author) from upstate, NY on January 08, 2013:

Kathryn L Hill- Thanks for your visit, I'm so glad you appreciated the story! I don't think there's anything as important or more needed today than a move of the Spirit of God!

Kathryn L Hill from LA on January 07, 2013:

This is amazing. It is what I needed to read just now! Thanks for bringing this amazing event in history to us.

Rev. Earl Jackson from Massachusetts on September 06, 2012:

Great info, and one of the missing needs of Christianity in today's dark days. Revivals like the Welsh revival, have been poured out, by God throughout history, and we certainly need one today. But I think the key is seek the Lord and wait upon Him to do it. True Revivals are not worked up, they are poured out, and it is imperative that we not try to simulate what only the Holy spirit can do. I'm afraid that happens a lot. People tying to be revived, when they actually have received nothing from the Holy Spirit. Imitation revivals are always a poor substitute for the real deal. I hope and pray that God uses people like you, and articles like this, to help fan the fires of a great genuine revival, that will sweep over the churches of Christ in re-ignite their dwindling embers, and re-invigorate their cold and lifeless worship and service. I also hope and pray that he will raise up preachers who will preach like they did in the welsh revival, and in the earlier Great Awakening, men of God who stir people up with a vital and life-changing Gospel of God's great and Sovereign Grace. Thanks again for this article. Nice Job. (author) from upstate, NY on September 05, 2012:

Faye Welch Melancon- Blessings to you and your husband! That's such exciting news about a great move of the Spirit in southern Louisiana and in your life personally. There's nothing that tops being with God and hearing His voice!

Faye Welch Melancon on September 05, 2012:

What a great inspiring story of history, it is so encouraging. We are currently experiencing a great revival in south Louisiana, we havew to drive an hour to Baton Rouge, but God has been moving something like I have never seen , Praise God! I was a Welch and have always had such a hunger for the Holy Spirit, something in our lineage. Recently we have seen so much moving of the Holy Spirit, God is up to something. My husband sat on the pew in a A/G church for over 30 years and never rec,d the Ho;y Spirit, but a couple of years ago while driving his truck home he was listening to Donnie Swaggart and p;aced his hand on the radio and instantly was filled, and has not been the same. God is faithful! Thank You for Your Information! (author) from upstate, NY on September 04, 2012:

Hi Audrey- Thank you so much for sharing these awesome firsthand reports of the shillong revival! It’s great to know that the revival is still going strong and from your testimony, I have no doubt that you’ve experienced this outpouring personally!

There was a lot of hard ground these missionaries had to break up before the Spirit could move in power, but their efforts were not in vain as is plainly evident! Our earthy language can’t fully capture the glory of the heavenly realms, such as the mighty presence of God that has been visiting “Shillong” and the neighboring areas! All we can do is witness the effects of the Spirits manifest power and presence of those who have been receptive and the Angelic manifestations that accompany the mighty presence of the king of kings!

Audrey on April 23, 2012:

below u can read a first hand account of the connection of the Welsh missionaries and Khasia Hills (now known on the net as Shillong Revival) (1904) (2006)

God did it and can do it again...Yes the fire of Revival is still burning but not as it was in 2006-2008 though in some churches yes the Revival is still goin on strong..on a personal basis the children are still experiencing the power of the Holy Spirit...but the fire has been quenched by leaders as God was empowering lay people ;can u imagine children quoting from memory verses from Revelations asking people to repent coz Jesus is coming soon...last week some called up to say that Jesus appeared to them and said HE IS NEAR -REPENT ...ITS NOT ANYMORE REPENT COZ HE IS COMING BUT AS THEY SAW VISIONS THAT HE IS ALREADY ON HIS WAY COZ THEY heavens opened and saw angels ready for battle and the earth was so hot on fire like hell opening up.. It's always a pleasure to hear from you Ms Dee! To be honest, I read about the timing of these revival's in Rick Joyner's book "The World Aflame", and I wholly agree with him. Nothing major happens in the world anyway, without God's permission! (author) from upstate, NY on April 12, 2012:

Yup. He's written some great books on revival and there are some sermons of his available to listen to online. That's how I first heard of him and I am so glad I did. Even though I can't meet him here on earth, I am so joyous to know that I will be able to meet him and praise God along with him and all the others. (author) from upstate, NY on April 12, 2012:

North Wind- It's great to hear from you! Your so right, the language of men is insuffient to describe God's awesome power and presence.

When you mentioned Leonard Ravenhill I knew I'd heard his name somewhere. Now I remember he was a mentor to Keith Green, also I just read that he mentored Steve Hill, Tommy Tenny, David Wilkerson and a generation of young revivalists! (author) from upstate, NY on April 12, 2012:

Ms Dee- That's very perceptive, it's no accident as to the timing of these revivals. I believe that God revives his people to prepare them for some of the judgements that come upon the earth and for major events that God wants to bring forth. In this case that judgement was ww1 and 20 years later ww2 and as you said the rebirth of the nation of Isreal. The 2nd great awakening proceeded the civil war and the first great awakening the revolutionary war!

North Wind from The World (for now) on April 12, 2012:

The Welch Revival was an awesome occurrence. I heard it mentioned in one of Leonard Ravenhill's sermons and from there I tried to find out more about it. It did shake the world and it was indeed an awesome thing for what word can one use when describing the movement of God through His people except awesome?

Deidre Shelden from Texas, USA on April 12, 2012:

Wow, I would have loved to have been there to witness this! Can't help but wondering at the timing of the Welch and Asuza revivals, before the soon to come world wars and the establishment of the sovereign nation of Israel. (author) from upstate, NY on April 12, 2012:

Audrey- What an awesome and powerful move of the Holy Spirit! I desperately need to experience what these children were experiencing now! I'm going to share your link in multiple locations. Disappearinghead- Thank you for your gracious comments! I heard that an American revivalist named Matt Sorger visited Wales on the 100th anniversary of the Welch revival on October 31, 2004. During his visit their were experiences of angelic visitations, visions, healings, manifestations in the spirit realms and many were saved. Here's a link to his time in Wales and England:

In his book "The World Aflame", Rick Joyner gives his insights as to why he believes the revival was cut short.

For one, Evan Roberts was so exhausted after his 18 months of touring Great Britain that he experienced a breakdown of sorts. Back in those days they didn't stress the value of rest enough. Another problem was that he came under the influence of Jesse Penn Lewis and her husband William, who insolated him from even his own family and friends. They over stressed the importance of not taking the glory of God to the extreme, where Roberts became a spiritual hermit living with the Lewis's. For these reasons, joyner believed that the revival was cut short.

Thanks for posting this hub.

Loughor is just across the River Lougher from Llanelli where I live. In 1994 I attended a meeting Moriah Chapel to mark the 90th anniversary. There was an expectation for something to happen, but sadly we didn't see revival break out again. A few years later I had some Australian relatives over for a visit; they had heard of the revival and wanted to see where it happened. So we drove over to Moriah and just happened to meet one of the deacons. He was kind enough to give us a guided tour of the chapel and the rooms where it all started, and took us to see the grave of Evan Roberts in the tiny cemetery round the back.

As to why the revival petered out I don't know. (author) from upstate, NY on March 30, 2012:
