What is Prayer?

Prayer is simply communicating with God. The communication should be a two-way conversation. You talk to God and then you listen to what God has to say to you. Talk, then listen. A one-way conversation with God is only part of the prayer.

You wouldn't call someone on the telephone and hang up after you have talked. You would wait for the person to say something. That's the way it is with God. He listens to you, and then God responds.

Whenever you speak to God about a specific situation, then you are praying. Whenever you call on God for help during a difficult occasion, then you are praying to God. You can speak to God in an audible voice, and you can dialogue with God just as you would talk to a human.

When Should People Pray?

According to 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul tells us to "Pray without ceasing." That means every time is a good time to talk to God. Since God never sleeps nor slumber, he is awake all the time to hear your prayers.

Amazing things happen when you pray. You get God's attention through prayer. In the Psalms, David said, "Hear my prayer, incline thine ear to me, Lord. Hear my cry" (Psalms 4:1; 5:1; 17:1).

    • When your pastor tells you to pray.

Where Should People Pray?

Just like people can pray all the time, they can also pray any place. Please know that the church is not the only place where a person should pray.

You might have heard about people going into their prayer closet to pray. A prayer closet is not the place among your clothes, though it could be. Your prayer closet is just a figure of speech and not necessarily a physical place where a person is limited to pray.

Who Should Pray?

Every child of God should pray. It should not be left up to the pastor of your church or your Sunday school teacher to do all the praying. Anyone who has a mouth can pray to God.

Atheists are people who do not believe in God. If they don't believe in God, surely they will not pray to someone they do not believe in. So, the one prayer that atheists can pray is called the sinner's prayer. It is the beginning of all other prayers.

According to Romans 10:9-10, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."

After a person has done what is recorded in the above two verses, then that person is a believer in God through his Son, Jesus Christ. From that point on, he can communicate with God by speaking to God and listening to what God has to say to him.

Why Do People Pray?

There are some reasons you should pray. The main reason is that God commanded it throughout the Bible. Another reason is that Jesus did it, and He is our perfect example.

People pray to keep be in communion with God. They pray when they have a need for something. They also pray to thank God for answering a previous prayer. People pray for others. That is known as an intercessory prayer. Sometimes, people pray to get closer to God and to be in His presence.

When you do not pray as God commanded, you are submitting to your flesh and restraining the Spirit from taking over. You become an idol worshipper of your own self.

    • None of the above

How Should People Pray?

You have probably heard the acronym, PUSH, that means "Pray Until Something Happens." That's one way to pray, but the best way to pray is to pray the scriptures because God loves hearing his words repeated to him. Therefore, pray the solution according to the Word of God instead of the problem.

Even though there are many different postures of prayer, one position is not more important than the other. God accepts your prayers whether you are sitting, standing, kneeling or lying prostrate on the floor.

He is not concerned with whether you are bowing your head or not. He doesn't care if you close your eyes or not. The reason a person might favor these positions is to shut people and things out so they can focus exclusively on God.

Remember, God is more interested in that you pray rather than in the posture you assume while communicating with Him.
