Prayers for Peace & Goodwill

Pax et Bonum - Inspiration for Prayers for Peace & Goodwill

My youngest daughter brought me this pretty little tile from one of her trips to Italy.

Pax et Bonum translates to Peace and Goodwill and I have it sitting where I can see it often.

I've written about my favorite prayer in White Cloud's Prayer but there are other prayers, poems and meditations that I also value. Mostly Peace Prayers.

I hope you enjoy them.

A Prayer for Simplicity and Peace

A prayer by Michael Leunig

Dear God,

We give thanks for places of simplicity and peace. Let us find such a place within ourselves. We give thanks for places of refuge and beauty. Let us find such a place within ourselves.

We give thanks for places of nature's truth and freedom, of joy, inspiration and renewal, places where all creatures may find acceptance and belonging. Let us search for these places: in the world, in ourselves and in others. Let us restore them. Let us strengthen and protect them and let us create them.

May we mend this outer world according to the truth of our inner life and may our souls be shaped and nourished by nature's eternal wisdom. Amen.

Seek peace, and pursue it.

— Psalm 34:13

"Oh Great Mystery,

We give thanks, for the natural world we see.

All the Creatures, Stones, and Plants

Who show us how to be.

We learn their lessons, seek their truths,

Return our loving praise,

We honor the peace they show us,

Which guides our human ways.

We ask that we may become like them,

Living in harmony,

And deep within our heart of hearts,

Know the Sacred Mystery.

The Eternal Flame of Love burns bright,

When we look upon Your face,

And see the beauty reflected there,

In every creed and race.

The Sacred Pipe releases these words

To the Sky Nation, there above,

That we may walk in beauty,As examples of peace and love.

Eternal wellspring of peace--

May we be drenched with the longing for peace

that we may give ourselves over to peace

until the earth overflows with peace

as living waters overflow the seas.

~Marcia Falk

Come let us go up the mountain of the Lord,

that we may walk the

paths of the Most High.

And we shall beat our swords into ploughshares,

and our spears into pruning hooks

Nation shall not lift up sword against nation--

neither shall they learn war any more.

And none shall be afraid, for the mouth of the

Lord of Hosts has spoken.

Peace Prayers - The Book

I own this book. In fact, some of the prayers in this page are from this book.

Royalties from this book are donated to UNICEF, Children's Defense Fund, and Doctors Without Borders. I can't think of a better reason to buy it!

From the Product Description:

"...Peace Prayers is a compilation of prayers, reflections, affirmations, poems, and quotes on peace. From ancient Rome to modern Vietnam, from Africa to Australia, the writers, thinkers, poets, politicians, religious figures, and even warriors collected here all express the urgent need for a true and lasting peace that only can come from a just and cooperative world community..."

I do not want the peace that passeth all understanding. I want the understanding which bringeth peace.

— Helen Keller

Reflections on Peace

Some favorites...

The peace of one individual is small. The peace of many people together is big. When we see ourselves as separate from our community and from nature, then violence and strife arise. It is only when we understand our part in an overall unity that there is the possibility of peace on a large scale. ~Deng Ming Dao

Seeing the rest of the world filled full of iniquity, the lover of justice will be content to keep his own life on earth untainted by wickedness and impious actions, so that he may leave this world with a fair hope of the next, at peace with himself and God. ~Plato

The True Peace

The first peace, which is the most important,

is that which comes within the souls of people

when they realize their relationship,

their oneness, with the universe and all its powers,

and when they realize that at the center

of the universe dwells Wakan-Taka (the Great Spirit),

and that this center is really everywhere, it is within each of us.

This is the real peace, and the others are but reflections of this.

The second peace is that which is made between two individuals,

and the third is that which is made between two nations.

But above all you should understand that there can never

be peace between nations until there is known that true peace,

which, as I have often said, is within the souls of men.

Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God.

— Matthew 5:3-10

A Book on Peace - A gift anyone will love

This book was written for children and would be such a good gift. It's colorful and easy to read. Even a grownup would love it, I'm certain!

It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.

@Spook LM: Thank you very much for the Angel blessing. And Squidoo Angels are very real Angels. No question in my mind!

Spook LM on December 04, 2009:

Beautiful. Merry Xmas to you and yours. Blessed by an Angel, albeit only a Squidoo one.

Cheryl Kohan (author) from England on December 04, 2009:

@JenOfChicago LM: Thanks, Jen. I like to think of them as prayers for peace AND tolerance. If we could cultivate a little more tolerance, I think peace would be inevitable.

Cheryl Kohan (author) from England on December 04, 2009:

@anonymous: You know, that's so true. It actually takes an effort, sometimes, to stay inspired. If this lens helps you with that, then you are very welcome! Thanks for visiting.
