Peace Comes Through Faith - A Short Devotional from Romans 5

Timothy is a Christian who enjoys creating visual art and writing. He has a B.S. in psychology.

What everyone wants to do is live a peaceful life but the truth is life, at times, can be anything but totally peaceful. The main reason is because we live in a tumultuous world where people seek peace by going to war or by resorting to violent acts.

The government tries to legislate peace by enacting laws to keep the peace and people take medications to have a peace of mind but true peace is elusive through man made efforts.

The only path to true peace comes from a changed heart resting In God’s Word. It is only there will the source of true peace be found.

Paul states in Romans 5: 1-2 “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith,we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”

Paul is clear, the path to true peace ”runs through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Through Him we have peace with God and in our own hearts. There are many other verses in the Bible which attest to true peace coming through Jesus. Here are just three of them.

  • John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
  • Phillipians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
  • John 16:33 “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

So since we know we have peace “with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,” we know that we can endure whatever comes our way, the “sufferings”, the trials, or the situations which are out of our control. But there is also the good news from God, our endurance through trials helps build up our character, our testimony to the world which says, God is Good

The world does not understand the cancer patient who on the last days of their earthly journey smiles because their hope is in God. At the end they know where they are going. The world does not understand a man who says, “I forgive the one who did this,” even though he just lost his wife, the victim of a violent senseless act. The world does not understand the person who gives their all and want nothing in return.

The world does not understand what it means to be a Christian ,to endure sufferings with a smile, because we know sufferings build character which gives way to hope. Once our hope is secure through faith in Jesus we cannot be shamed because God's love has been, “poured into our hearts.”

God's love and our trust in Him carries us through. Where the world has despair, we have joy. Where the world has uncertainty, we have sure redeemer who, “saved us from the wrath of God,” so that one day we will have true peace in Heaven

Let us pray for the world to have a clear vision, an open heart and a desire to know the truth, because then and only then can the world know true peace.
