Sometimes They Come Back!
Over the past four decades rumors have circulated intermittently about ghostly appearances in the vicinity of Norah head Cemetery, Jenny Dixon Beach, and a section of Wilfred Barrett Drive on the NSW Central Coast – Australia.
One story, set in the 1970’s, tells of a teenage girl heading home from work when she was pulled into a car and viciously attacked and raped by five youths. She was later found barely alive in bushland at Jenny Dixon Beach, but died as a result of her injuries. On her deathbed, she told her father she wouldn’t rest until her attackers were found and punished.
Police never charged anyone with the crime, but five youths who were frequently in each others company died under bizarre circumstances during the following years.
The first ghostly appearance was reported not far from Norah Head Cemetery shortly after the girl’s burial. Within weeks, sightings of the girl had increased, and after each event her grave was disturbed.
A short time later, a young man suspected of being involved in the girls death hung himself after complaining of being continually harassed by a spirit.
The same year, his friend - and some believe accomplice - was fatally injured in a car accident. Before he passed away he claimed someone had walked in front of his vehicle - but witnesses saw no-one.
The third member of the group to die in mysterious circumstances drove his car off a cliff after confessing that an apparition had been torturing him.
The bizarre scenario continued when a fourth youth picked up a hitchhiker on Wilfred Barrett Drive. By the time he had reached Noraville Road, the girl had disappeared. He reported the incident, but was cruelly ridiculed, and soon began showing signs of madness. He later ran his car over an embankment on the Pacific Highway and died.
A similar scenario was in store for the final victim. He had complained to his sister of being ‘constantly haunted.’ He later left the district to work for a circus in an effort to escape the torment – but it followed him.
He often told of ‘seeing things’ day and night and later ended the nightmare by taking his own life with a shotgun.
The ghostly story made headlines again when a visiting doctor picked up a hitchhiker on Wilfred Barrett Drive while holidaying in the area. He knew nothing of the local legend. He told police the hitchhiker disappeared as he approached Noraville Road. The distraught Physician later sought psychiatric counseling.
Today, stories of the mysterious spirit still circulate throughout the Central Coast. Not so long ago, two police officers told of picking up a hitchhiker on Wilfred Barrett Drive during the early hours of the morning. Again the young female had disappeared upon reaching Norah Head Cemetery.
Joanne Feeney of the Central Coast is fascinated with the story. 'I actually spoke to quite a few older residents regarding their thoughts on the legend - and one old chap - Ken Salladine - vividly recalled picking the girl up on Wilfred Barrett Drive about forty-years-ago. He was talking to her, and after receiving no response glanced into the backseat and she was gone.
'It's a well known among locals in the area that the girl was kidnapped on that stretch road then raped and left for dead in the bushland at Jenny Dixon Beach. The stories are all too similar to be made up, and every story always states that she strolls along Wilfred Barrett Drive possibly in search of her killers - but always disappears near Norah Head Cemetery.'
Another strange twist is that she always sits in the rear of the vehicle - never the front. And after she vanishes there is often a lit cigarette on the backseat.
- The girl’s murder still remains unsolved. It is also widely believed there is still one person connected to the crime who managed to escape the young girl's wrath by fleeing the area.
Perhaps this is the person she continually seeks.
Raymond Grove who lives near Jenny Dixon Beach insists the girl that haunts Wilfred Barrett Drive
is not the same person he saw late one night while partying with his
friends on Jenny Dixon beach. 'The ghost I saw was dressed in clothing
of the 1800's - we all saw her, and my research suggests this particular
spirit was that of a woman who drowned in one of the many shipwrecks
just off the beach before the lighthouse was built.' Note: For Raymond's
account of his ghostly experience see Ghost Of Jenny Dixon.
So there seems to be two ghosts linked to Jenny Dixon Beach.
As for the young lady on Wilfred Barrett Drive, film director/producer Chris Halling - has just released a trailer to his upcoming feature production called 'Jenny Dixon Beach'
'The script took me three-years to complete,' Chris said. 'During that time I interviewed countless people on their experiences regarding the ghost. The local police have a stack of reports from locals and tourists who have seen her, and many of the officers will quietly tell you they have also picked her up or seen her.
'With so many people telling the
same story - there must be some truth in it. So of course I was eager
to get the story on the big-screen. But I confess to taking a bit of
poetic license with the film and making it gorier than the actual legend
dictates. Even so - the core of the plot remains and I hope the
audience enjoys the film. They're certainly in for plenty of thrills and

billy on May 13, 2012:
in your deep down personal opinion mr mark hall, do you think this young ghost is realistic but be honest.
billy on May 13, 2012:
this is scary my brothers car broke down once while driving up that strech of road but didn't see a soal in sight. i wonder if she was huanting him without revealing her self.
Bustopher on March 19, 2012:
To Local: I quite agree. None of the stories posted above have been sourced - "One guy", "The Third guy drove his car over a cliff" etc, etc. All unsourced and completely unverifiable. I doubt there would ever have been that many suicides near Wilfred Barret Drive in the last 40 years.
I lived at Budgewoi from 1965-1979 then Kanwal from 1979 to 1983. (I moved to Newcastle, Macksville, Caves Beach and am now back on the Coast - Toukley from 1996 to 1998 and Wyoming from then to now).
The main source I remember for the story of the ghost was the "Village News" which was a throwaway weekly newspaper distributed in about 1974 or 1975. I can remember an extensive story about the ghost, referring to the fact that she was picked up as a hitchiker and then after a while, when the driver looked around into the back seat, she had disappeared. Again, completely unsourced and unverifiable. Since the newspaper was merely designed to carry advertising and be topical, this was typical of the stories it would carry. If there was any reliablity in the source, it would be different.
But yes, local, I tend to agree completely, that like all good rumours and ghost stories, people hear about it, and embellish it, and even make up their own stories about the matter. This is, of course, heavily facilitated by blogs like this and comments like these.
Sorry guys, I AM skeptical normally, but this story needs a little more evidence for even someone with reasonbable views to believe it.

Lived at toukley 20 years. Drive Wilfred Barrett every day at all hours. Not satisfied that she exists. Its just an embellished story with no foundation. Ive seen numerous people walking the road (they weren't ghosts), and as for trucks scared of travelling it. The road was not designed for trucks nor are the roads around it (the entrance, toukley, budgewoi). 15 years ago wilfred barret was a very dangerous road 100 km zone with like no side lines and the middle line was degraded in the dirt / trees at the side (not a place 2 trucks want to pass each other). Nowadays it is one of the better roads on the coast (2 lanes easily converted to 4 lanes) Yet the police in all their wisdom LOWER THE SPEED to 90 AFTER MAKING IT SAFER. As for the police picking her up I was hearing that rumor as early as 1993 (isn't a recent thing). First two words of the article give the whole thing away though "One story". Which is all it is a story. How did the storyteller piece the 5 individuals who died in the story together anyway (without names, notice there is not one name out of six people 5 guily and the supposed poor woman). That person died in a car crash, Jenny Dixon must have done it ?? Come on. Ive had quite a number of my friends at least 5 possibly as high as 10 (the 5 years after graduating) in my class of 1994 die from car accidents (none related to ghosts mostly related to alcohol). Our year was considered the unlucky year.

I believe that the ghost of the young lady will not appear if you set out to find her, but only at a time of her choosing. Don't bother going to Rookwood to find ghosts t66 because there are none!

hi josh r i can tell you the cemetary at lisarow have some old graves there i am going to go there as i love looking at them, also rookwood in sydney i also would like to know where this beautiful lady is buried as i would like to put flowers on her grave
Justme on February 01, 2012:
I have a few friends who swear they've seen her some even have driven right through her! I had an encounter on on boxing day at 2am driving through to get home to the entrance I didn't even realize she was there until I glanced in my rear view mirror and than asked my friend too I also know I'm not imagining it due to a police officer pulling me over after leaving Wilfred Barrett drive and asking if I was carrying more than one passenger (red p plates can't have more than 1 person in the car after 11pm) he was adamant that I had been even though he'd been behind me the whole way.

I am a local teenager to this area i live in bluehaven, one of my mates and his step father have been searching cemetaries for a little bit more than 7 years, i have recently joined them in trying to find ghosts.
We go out almost every weekend we have captured many ghosts on camera and film but mainly only orbs, out of all the areas and cemetaries we've searched toukley cemetary has been the least exciting with barely any activity.
We drive all the areas we have heard there have been sitings but have yet to find the Jenny dixon/Ghost Of Wilfred Barrett Drive.
We are hoping one day we find her grave as we have been told the whereabouts of it have been kept quiet, would you know of anymore places other than the ones that have been listed in your story where we might see her or find her grave?, as we would love to see this phenomenon.
Would you know of any places where we could capture some more notorious ghosts?

I seen jenny dixon one nite as i was driving from my house which is a couple hundred yards from jenny dixon beach along bungary road and i was looking ahead down to the driveway entrance to the beach and i seen a female apparition as i got closer she just was not there it was like a fleeting glimpse no i don't drink or do drugs im 53 years old ..then as i got to the bend of the road at the entrance i could see down to the coast road corner 500 yards ahead and there she was again standing on the corner under the signs in blue i could see her figure and for 3 seconds as i drove closer then as i pulled up to the corner she just wasn't there anymore it all happened so quick ..Ive got no doubt that she exists spiritually to many people have seen her i live a few hundred yards away many people have seen her ..One of my friends a homeless girl was living in her car in the car park of jenny dixon beach for 6 months i ended up letting the girl live with me as she was homeless and she told me she saw her many many times but like me had no fear of her whatsoever .I believe what i can gather is her soul will not rest till she makes it home the poor bugger hitch hikes but cannot get past the cemetry she does not dissapear out of choice she is still trying to make it home .If i ever see her i will gladly pick her up .She deffinately exists

Juanita on October 07, 2011:
I am sitting in my Unit just off The Entrance Bridge right now reading this. I've known about her for years and everytime my family and I travel that road of a night, we always keep our eyes peeled. I'd heard they were doing a movie about it but then it went silent, I thought they'd given up the idea. There is a spot along Wilfred Barret where there's no communication. At least once a week I'll be on the phone talking to Mum and her mobile will cut out as they drive through that spot. It's a pain in the butt. I would NEVER drive along that road by myself of a night, never, it's just such a desolate and dark place. My daughter gets her license this year and I'm already preparing her for that trip and I pray she never breaks down on that stretch of road. I think I'll make her drive the long way around....

I lived on the central coast for 20 years my Uncle claimed he saw her walking from the Entrance to. Toukley... I myself wouldn't drive on. There at night i would rather drive through Wyong....than along that road

Interesting yarn this one, I travel often on Wilfred Barrett at all hours of the night going to and from work in Newcastle, I have 2 friends who claim to have seen her and 1 work mate who has seen her. Another friend lived at Norah head and said that the house he resided in was haunted, I hope her soul finds peace, I have not seen her myself but, the sightings still persist.

I am intrigued with both of the stories surrounding both of these women, as i used to swim at Jenny Dixon beach as a teenager and i have also heard the story of the female ghost on Wilfred Barret Drive. I used to live at Kanwal, when i was a teenager but now i am at Bluehaven and i am shocked that the story of the Wilfred Barrett Drive Ghost is still circulating and people are still seeing her. Very interesting and i will be following with interest. Thank you Mark for all of the info on both of the stories.

Wilfred Barret Drive used to give me the creeps before I knew the story of the ghost. I remember one night driving along the road with a car not far behind me. When I checked the rear vision one second it was there the next it was gone. Nowhere to turn off and it happened too quickly for that anyhow. I thought maybe someone turned their headlights off but the car didn't reappear before I got to The Entrance 5 minutes up the road. Creepy

Tammy, thank you for the fascinating information you have provided. An increasing amount of detail such as your own continues to emerge. I'm still in awe at how many people have actually witnessed this young lady - I'm really hoping one day to be able to put a name to her.
Thanks again - your input is much appreciated :)

I live in Budgewoi, 2 mins from the area. I myself have seen "her". I abused my husband one night for nearly hitting a girl on the side of the rd, he calmly told me there was no one there, very scary.... The story states she was on her way home from work, however she actually made an apprearance at a party earlier that night. A family relative of mine saw her walking and recognised her from the party. To this day he has guilt about not offering her a lift. If he had she would have made it home that dreadful night.

I don't particularly like the trailer, it seems to stretch out the truth too much and the film looks cheap, i know its a low budget film, but i think more thought and organising should have been put into it, i do however look forward to it and i will be seeing it or sure, when does it come out? Not being to judgy, im sure its a lot harder than what i think, i doubt i could do a better job, so congratulations and sorry if i seemed to harsh
