Are mythical creatures in the Bible and if so are they real? There are many passages regarding a few recognizably named mythical creatures. The Dragon is the most common, but are there others, such as unicorns and satyrs?

"Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib? Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee? Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him? Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn?" Job 39:9-12 KJV

"But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures; and owls shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there." Isaiah 13:21 KJV

Many of the modern Bibles out there will carelessly misinterpret a Hebrew or Greek word by means of a flawed translation in an effort to make more sense of the word. If you compare these verses with the same verses in many other Bibles, you will see a translation that changes the mentioned creatures all together. In my opinion, this makes a significant difference when it comes to understanding the verse. Every verse in the Bible is the exact Word of God and should remain as He initially intended them to be.

For instance, the mention of the Unicorn in several passages throughout the Old Testament is often interpreted as an ox in most modern Bibles. The Satyr is often interpreted as "goat". When I researched the Hebrew word "unicorn", the Hebrew word used is "Re'em". The exact meaning is unknown because it is not the same as ox, but the word for "ox" in Hebrew is "Baqar" The Hebrew word for Satyr is "'Sa`iyr" whereas, the actual Hebrew word used for goat is "`ez".

The problem with accepting the modern translation is that when you research the words in the original Hebrew, the words are always used differently than the words used for "goat" or "ox" The Hebrew word for "satyr" only appears twice in the entire Bible, only in the Old Testament (Isaiah 13:21 & 34:14). The Hebrew word for Unicorn appears 9 times throughout the Bible, also only in the Old Testament (Numbers 23:22, 24:8, Deuteronomy 33:17, Job 39:9, 39:10, Psalms 22:21, 29:6, 92:10 & Isaiah 34:7).

The Hebrew words for both Satyr and Unicorn are always associated with the traits of a specific animal or creature unlike the ones the modern Bibles associate them with. For instance the satyr is only mentioned twice and one time it is mentioned as dancing and the other time it is mentioned as yelling, but both times they are mentioned in a place of desolation. To associate them with goats is unusual because every time the Hebrew word for goat is mentioned, it is pretty indicative of a goat. The mention of the Hebrew word for unicorn always associates the creature with strength, which is why the modern translators likely associated them with oxen.

God speaks to Job of them "Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?" The problem associating them with oxen is that oxen can and are always bound by man. What God is saying to Job is that a unicorn is a very strong animal that can not be tamed. A Satyr is not just a goat, nor is a unicorn just an ox.

The Satyr is a mythical creature that is supposedly a cross between a man and a goat. It has the upper body of a man and the legs of a goat. The legend dates back to the Greeks and Romans, who also speak of them in their writings as well as their paintings and sculptures which usually depicts them in sexual situations. The unicorn is often depicted as a single horned horse. This depiction was promoted throughout medieval Europe. The legend of this creature, like dragons, transcends cultures throughout the world. Ancient China, India, the Caucasus and even the Greeks speak of the creature. The depictions vary from region to region, but the most predominant description is that of a horse with a single horn on its head. It may be possible that the unicorn is an extinct mammalian creature called the Elasmotherium (in the Rhinocerotidae family). It certainly fits the description in the Bible.

In today's world, there is an ever increasing push, by some scientists to make new and more unusual creatures, (chimera). A chimera is a mix between more than one species of animal. This is something that a growing community of scientists are looking to become involved in today, genetic manipulation and the intermingling of DNA between different species of animal. The possibility is very real. With today's technology, there are scientists performing the most abominable experiments in the name of progress. Under President George W. Bush, this was illegal in the US, but the current administration has decided to overturn the banning of embryonic stem cell research, which is an open doorway to human-animal experimentation and the fact is, they will justify this research under the premise that they are trying to improve the quality of human life. According to the ancients, this is not something new.

In the 6th chapter of the "Book of Genesis", the writer (Moses) claims that angels, "The Sons of God", came to Earth and lay with the “daughters of men” which created a race of giants (called the Nephilim), possibly the Titans of old. This is Biblical and can be found in chapter 6 of the "Book of Genesis". The Bible does not go into much detail about this except that when the Nephilim are mentioned, the Earth and "all flesh" had become corrupted and only Noah was perfect in his generations. The Hebrew word used for perfect means to be without physical blemish. Then the Earth and all creatures that have the breath of life are destroyed by a world-wide flood.

There are ancient Hebrew documents, which are not considered Cannononical, which make mention of what we call "Chimera". The ancient books of Enoch, Jubilees and Jasher, (also known as the Pseudepigrapha) go into more detail about the time of Noah. The oldest and most legible known copies (The Ethiopian Copies) of these books date back about 300 years before Christ. The early church decided not to includes these books along with others, including many Apocryphal books for various reasons. The "Pseudepigrapha" and the "Apocrypha" are not the same as Gnostic teachings (which deviate more from scripture and are definitely not God-Breathed). The writers of these ancient texts speak of the angels teaching men to do abominable things that men ought not to know. They call these fallen angels "the Watchers". The writers of these books speak of chimera type creatures. They go on to say that the reason that God destroys the Earth is because most of the flesh of all creatures was corrupted from the intermingling of one species with another. In addition to the teaching of secret things like astrology and necromancy.

St Jude quotes from the book of Enoch, word for word in Jude 1:14-15, “And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”

It's interesting to note that many cultures speak of the unicorns, the satyrs, the dragons, the leviathans, the fiery flying serpents, the Giants (Nephilim) and Chimera as if they really existed. Even the idea of demons was never mentioned until the New Testament, but these older books speak of how the demons came about. Again, these books are not considered God- breathed, (that does not mean that they aren't useful for historical reference), but they make for interesting reading.

Should you choose to read these books, be careful to remember that they are not part of the Cannon of the Bible. Some theologians suggest that the early church leaders did not feel comfortable adding books that dealt with such evil things as "fallen angels", abominable creatures and visions of Hell. Others suggest that although these stories are derived from alleged historical accounts, there may be some embellishment or poetic license, which occurred over time in order to fill in the gaps of missing or destroyed sections. Some theologians agree that certain sections seem to deviate from the style of the original writer.

In any event, Chimera, Dragons, Leviathans, Flying Fiery Serpents and Dinosaurs in the Bible are also huge topics for research and discussion that I will address in future posts.

Are the Books of Enoch and Jubilees worthy of mention?

Great article! I find it humorous when Christians make fun of other mythologies for talking about mythical creatures and then you show them that the Bible does talk about such legendary creatures too.

We talk about mythical creatures, but yet the Nephilim to me hold the most mystery. These are the hybrid offspring of fallen angels and human women, and their heights given as 3000 ells, 2000 cubits, or whatever.

My point: Wow. I am not worried about the centaur or the satyr or the unicorn. I want to know what these Nephilim looked like, and what their true height was.

Sorry if I come across as rude.

I have never seen anything mentioned about fairies or fae people in the Bible. I find it facinating that the Bible does mention many mythical creature and even Dinosaurs. My personal belief regarding Fairies is that either they are not real or they are a form of Chimera, which the books of Enoch, Jubilees and Jarred cover in more depth.

In a nutshell, according to Genesis 6 in the Bible, prior to the the Great Flood of Noah, the world was full of evil. In Noah was perfect in his generations. The term used for perfect in his generations is used to mean physical characterists, as opposed to spiritual righteousness as many mistakenly misinterpret it.

According to the Book of Enoch, the fallen angels had decended to Earth and needed to create bodies that could enable them to have sexual relations with women. Since the Human body can not be inhabitted by an angel, they created bodies for themselves to use. In doing so, they became physical beings.

They taught men the abominable acts, one being genetic manipulation and men began to create hybrid creatures, some of them animal-animal and others, human-animal.

The evidence of this crosses cultures. Take for instance, the Gods of Egypt and demi-gods/Titans of Greece. In addition, the fallen angles in their new bodies, decided to have sexual relations with human women and the offspring were called the Nephelim. These Nephelim were giant ferocious creatures. These creature are said to be upwards of 100' tall (Also like the Titans of old). They forced the men of Earth to supply them food. They apparently ate more food than the men on the Earth could supply. As a result, the men of Earth began to fight them and the creatures began to kill and eat men and each other in their fight for food.

Eventually, most of these Nephelim we destroyed prior to the flood, and since their spirits were unholy abominations, they were cast into the Abyss with most of the fallen angels. Unfortunately, they asked Enoch to beg God to not banish all of them to the Abyss so 1/3 of them were able to remain as evil spiritual beings on the Earth. We call them Demons. However, the world had become overrun with crossbred animals and humans and the only way to correct this abominable genetic nightmare was to destroy the entire Earth and save only 2 of each creature (and 7 of each of the clean animals) that had not yet been corrupted over time (Creatures that still had the Original DNA structure that God had created).

I know this sounds like something out of a fantasy/science story, but the oldest copies of the Books of Enoch, Jubilees and Jarred date back to over 200 years before Jesus Christ walked the Earth. In fact, they are mentioned in the Old Testament and even Jude Quotes the Book of Enoh almost word for word. "The Lord comes with ten thousands of His Saints...". You can download copies of these books on the internet for free. Here are two links to the Book of Enoch:

These books and the others are very unusual and likely disturb you. Like any Non-Cannonical book, they are not considered God Breathed Scripture and after reading them you will understand why.they serve no purpose other than to give a more detailed account of a historical event. They are good for reading, but not to be used as Scripture. They obviously speak of such evil wicked things that God left them out of His Bible for a reason. They do not in any way teach anything that the Bible doesn't already cover, but they do speak a lot of Evil things. In addition, Enoch, also contains prophecy as well. If you consider researching them, I urge you to use extreme caution.

In the first picture, about the chronicles of Narnia, it is a faun, the Roman version of a satyr. Otherwise, good information.
