Sayings and Quotes To Live By

Sayings and Quotes Collection

I have gathered a few of my favorite sayings and quotes, of which I find myself using quite often. Some of these sayings I have picked up from others, and some I have concocted myself. So if you have heard any of them or similar ones before, I am not taking credit for their creation. This is my first installment of favorite quotes and hopefully I will make up some new ones and remember some old ones in the future. Read on and see if any of them apply to your life from my sayings and quotes collection.

Your Dream House Becomes the Place You Live

This saying is not just about living in a dream house, but about the reality of the dream house. You may dream of a beautiful house, build the dream house and actually get to live in this well planned and loved home. But like many things in life the dreams become realities. The house becomes the place where you live. This dream house does have to be cleaned on a regular basis, and sad but true many things will need repair and redecorating during a period of time. Another reality to face is that you will still have problems on a daily basis, but the joy of a beautiful place to experience these problems. Of course you will still continue to love the house but chances are you will take it for granted after a period of time. If only we could remember to take time to appreciate all we have even for a few minutes everyday.

Nothing Stimulates the Appetite Like Eating

My mother in law shared this quote with me many years ago and I never forgot it. You know how it is when you get busy, forget to eat and just don't think of eating? Should you take even one bite of anything, you will be off and running with a well stimulated appetite. I have added a few additions to this saying. The scent of excellent food and the visual picture of seeing the delicious food in person can also easily stimulate the appetite.

A Long Term Friendship can end with a Word

We all know about the fragile quality of friendships and all relationships. You can have a treasured friend who you share many things with and spend a lot of time, but a difference of opinion can turn into a heated argument. You may feel that due to the strength and length of the friendship this will never happen to your friendship. I just lost a friend over an argument and perhaps we will repair it someday or not.

my-favorite-sayings

People Seem to Want to get Married, but often don't want to stay married.

Look at Hollywood--.marriages by the dozens to be followed by divorces by the dozens. Romance, excitement, fancy weddings, gorgeous new homes make headline news showing a starry-eyed bride and groom. The reality of life sets in very fast, with the forgotten wedding, a few kids and then on to divorce.

The planning of a wedding for many brides is a trip to fantasy land. The poetry and roses often come to a screeching halt with the arrival of little ones. This is not an indictment against marriage but there are some serious realities about living together; and the excitement of a forthcoming marriage can sweep all of that under the table until later.

Think Before You Eat

This is one of my favorite sayings. Losing weight or keeping your weight in control is as simple as thinking before you take that next bite. Random eating whenever food appears is one of the main reason people gain weight. I have always thought about what I eat before I do. I no longer even realize it. For example if I am faced with a big buffet and I want to try different things, I will take a tiny taste of my favorites I have selected, and never go back for seconds. After so many years of discipline I tend to choose the healthiest selections.

Everything in Life Has its Compensations.

Everything in life that happens has some sort of compensation, though you may not realize this at the time. It may seem strange but many horrible events can have a compensating factor. An example of this concept would be if you lost all your money. This would be a pretty awful and frightening thing to happen. but it might lead you on a new path of joy and finding a more peaceful existence. I used to tell people I never worried about money, because we had none. See what compensations you can think of from difficult occurrences in your life.

Life is Ever Changing

My mother used to tell me this. Even if you stay in the same house and do the same things everyday, everything around you is changing and in turn will change your life.

Some People you Like No Matter What They Do and Some You Don't Like No Matter What They do

Sometimes you just don't like someone no matter what they say or do. These people can be very nice and accommodating, but there is just something you don't like. And on the other side of the coin you may have someone you like no matter what they do or say, and you are always forgiving of them. I may have made this quote up but if not it is really true. Just think about it with the people you know.

No Matter How Good Life is it is Never Easy

This saying comes from an old friend who I have lost touch with. She seemed to have a charmed life in all areas--good husband, good health, good kids and a solid bankroll. No matter what we have and what is in front of us life is a challenging experience and never easy--except for a moment or two.

Flowers on the Wall

Life is just a garden of flowers

Life is just a garden of flowers

We Want People to Read From Our Script

I saved my favorite saying for the end. We often want people to think the way we do and react as we might in different situations. They don't have to be in total agreement, or do exactly what we want. We just want them to respond in a way we feel is kind and honest.

Many of us have a mental script of life and sometimes wish people would read from this prepared script. It may be a simple thank you from someone that is not said. When we have an argument we would like certain responses and understanding. This concept may be a little complicated and I am hopeful that I have explained it well. You may have to think about this one for a while.

This is a neat way to introduce us to the quotes that have stayed with you over time. Explaining what the quotes mean to you adds another dimension to the quote. Well done. Take care.

Chitrangada Sharan from New Delhi, India on March 15, 2013:

The great thing about this hub is, that you have tried to explain the meaning of these quotes with context and that too beautifully.

I liked these quotes very much-----'No matter how good life is, it is never easy' and 'Life is ever changing.'

Thanks for sharing this interesting hub.

Mahaveer Sanglikar from Pune, India on March 15, 2013:

Nice collection of sayings, thank you for sharing....

Tom Schumacher from Huntington Beach, CA on March 15, 2013:

Nice hub! I like "think before you eat" and "everything in life has its compensations." Reminds me of what I often preach, which is decisions I make dictate my future...so be patient and mindful of what I do and when I'm doing it.

Rajan Singh Jolly from From Mumbai, presently in Jalandhar, INDIA. on March 14, 2013:

Interesting quotes Carol. I like the one " A long term friendship can end with a word" so I always say "Think before you speak". I also believe in "You are what you Eat". Now I don't know if these are original sayings or just coined by me. Still, it is worth practicing these two for a happy life.

Voted up and interesting and shared.

Erin Nichols from Montana on February 19, 2013:

My favorite quote is the one about marriage. This applies to my life, sadly, and to many other people I'm associated with. It seems like all the girls I know get married and find themselves divorced withing months once all the flowers and poetry is gone. It's sad to see, but so very true. Thank you for the interesting article! Loved the read! Voted Up!

CASE1WORKER from UNITED KINGDOM on February 18, 2013:

Most of these sayings are new to me, but I totally agree with the statement about stimulating the appetite- if I have had a big meal the night before I really want a huge breakfast, when you think that it would only be a slice of toast, I was the eggs the bacon and the sausage as well! Great hub voted up and interesting

Pamela ..Keep the extra honey as it sweetens your life. I made up some of these sayings but picked them up a long the way. thank you for stopping by and I always appreciate the votes.

Pamela Dapples from Arizona now on February 16, 2013:

Neat sayings -- none of which I've ever heard before. I enjoyed reading all the comments, too. I didn't know you had taken a bit of an absence from Hubpages. You write very dynamic pieces -- ambitious hubs. I'm glad to be able to pour a cup of lemon herbal tea, stir in too much honey -- and sip and read your thoughts. Voting up, awesome and sharing.

carol stanley (author) from Arizona on January 26, 2013:

Thank you pstraubie48. Some of these I sort of made up and others I picked up and added to. Nothing in our lives is totally original as we know. I am working on my second group of sayings and quotes. Thanks for visit and the angels are so lovely today.

Patricia Scott from North Central Florida on January 26, 2013:

As a 'collector of sayings and quotes, I find the ones you have here some I need to add to my collection.

Each one of them is worth a second read...and a third or more. When I come across words others have written that make me want to reread, I know they will become a part of my food for thought.

Thank you for sharing these Carol.

Sending you some Angels this 26th day of our new year. :) ps

Wow thank you Peg...So nice and lovely comments. You made my day. thank you for stopping by and being such a supportive and great hub friend.

Peg Cole from North Dallas, Texas on January 18, 2013:

My oh my, Carol. You have really put some thought into these and they seem so familiar yet most are new and unheard before. I loved the first one about dream houses. We live in what we consider our "dream house" that we built (still under construction) from the ground up. It is like going on vacation most of the time, except for the usual household issues: plumbing leaks, needs new siding, animals living in the crawl space. (Yikes) Yet every night I still say a prayer of thanks that we live in such a wonderful place!

The one about Life is Ever Changing rings so true!

Nicely written. I like your style. Peg

carol stanley (author) from Arizona on December 30, 2012:

Good morning my sublime Carol of Cool and beautiful thoughts - I love how you personalize each quote with intimate feeling of your own - that is what sets you apart from the usual 'favorite quotes' type of hub and in this way you make each quote your own and enlighten your readers at the same time - I am sending you warm wishes for your continued health, happiness and prosperity into the new year for you and your family

cam8510..It is pretty interesting about wanting people to be like we are. I think it is mostly about human decency and the good qualities we have, we want others to have also. Thanks for stopping in and sharing your feelings.

Gypsy Rose Lee from Daytona Beach, Florida on December 27, 2012:

Voted up and interesting. Great hub and super quotes. Actually it all made me incredibly hungry. Luckily just put on a pot of pea soup. Passing this on.

Chris Mills from Traverse City, MI on December 26, 2012:

Carol, I relate most to your last quote: "We Want People to Read From Our Script." I want to be the director in my life and everyone in my drama needs to follow the script I have written. It is so frustrating when they seem to have not gotten the notice. That is pretty self centered thinking, I know. I try to fight off the urge to really live that way. Thanks for digging these thought provoking quotes up and sharing them.

carol stanley (author) from Arizona on December 25, 2012:

thanks for dropping by..Yes just thinking before you eat would cut out many calories..Thanks for Vote UP

Thanks for sharing these funny sayings, Carol. Here is one of mine from Will Rogers in return: 'Everything is funny. As long as it is happening to somebody else!'

Hawaiian Odysseus from Southeast Washington state on December 24, 2012:

Wonderful hub and terrific comments...

My two cents' worth is this, Carol. I like how your mind works. Between the lines, and--emphatically--behind the scenes, I see the artist diligently at work...back from a month-long or so break, with every intention to back off a bit from the compelling lure of HubPages, and yet pulled back into the depths, like a surfer who's just fallen from his board, knowing full well that you were meant to write and that, indeed, there is no pulling back. I know, Carol...I just know, and I feel for you. As I've mentioned before, keep doing what you do best...so many of us are pulling for you and for each other. You are forever a resident of the heart and soul of HubPages. Happy Holidays to you and yours!

carol stanley (author) from Arizona on December 24, 2012:

Thanks for stopping in for quotes and sayings. You have a wonderful holiday season.

Wisdom worth sharing. Thanks Carol and Merry Christmas to you and you family.

Rich from Kentucky on December 24, 2012:

Carol, I've not heard these before, but they all make sense. My grandmother's favorite was, "Thinking makes life so much easier." I never thought much about it while I was young, but the older I get and observe so little of it being done, I'm beginning to like it more and more! Also, I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas! May it be filled with love!

Michelle Liew from Singapore on December 23, 2012:

I love your take on all these quotes, Carol! Thanks for sharing them with us! I am passing them on.

Heather Adams from Connecticut, USA on December 23, 2012:

Hi Carol - fun and interesting hub. I especially agree with the sayings about the dream house and the wedding. As you said, t's so easy to get caught up in the fantasy about something that when the "everyday" comes we can feel let down. I'm looking forward to reading more!

Audrey Hunt from Idyllwild Ca. on December 23, 2012:

I'm keeping this one close by. Love the way you have written about the meaning of each saying.

My favorite is "Your dream house becomes the place you live." Voted up, interesting, useful and awesome!

robin Levin on December 23, 2012:

Adding to the marriage quote is one of my favorites: "You marry for better or for worse, but you divorce for better."

kidscrafts from Ottawa, Canada on December 23, 2012:

Thank you for making us think!

I find that really sad that you lost a friend just because of a word. I lost a friend because she was acting more and more with contempt. Finally I decided I had to respect myself and I let her go. But it made me sad.

And than I found a quote that explain a little bit that fact

"We have three types of friends in life: Friends for a reason, friends for a season, and friends for a lifetime."

I suppose that she was there for a season or a reason!

But I am glad that I have friends for a lifetime as well even if we are now separated by an ocean!

Thanks for making us think!

Connie Smith from Southern Tier New York State on December 23, 2012:

Love the sayings, and there are definitely people I don't like no matter what they do or say. Conversely, there are people I like immediately....maybe they just have an aura of positive vibes encircling them. :)

Have a great day, Carol, and Merry Christmas to you and your husband.

breakfastpop on December 23, 2012:

Mary Craig from New York on December 23, 2012:

Lots to think about here Carol. Your sentiments make good points for each of the sayings. Voted up and interesting.

Suzie from Carson City on December 23, 2012:

carol......I really like this thought provoker! Quotes are inspiring. It's the very best way to say something really powerful in one, simple sentence. My Dad was a big one for quotes, using the very cleverest, at the right moment. (We also think many of them were his very own creations!)...LOL..............UP+++

carol stanley (author) from Arizona on December 23, 2012:

I know you cannot agree totally and I never thought people would. However there is always some truth in all that we say. Thanks for stopping by and your kind and thoughtful words.

Jools99: It is much easier to to think before you eat than you realize. I just think about the consequences both healthwise and figurewise. Going on diets is not fun and I decided a little prevention is good. Thanks for stopping in for a visit.

Yvonne Spence from UK on December 23, 2012:

Some interesting quotes here Carol. I don't agree with all of them, but definitely do with others. In particular seeing that everything in life has its compensations is a great thing to remember. Definitely life is ever changing - some friends and I were just talking about this recently. And your last quote is often sadly far too true - we do want people to read from our script instead of listening to what they are actually saying.

A thought provoking hub.

BTW, sorry to see you have lost a friend, and hope things work out for you.

Jools Hogg from North-East UK on December 23, 2012:

Yes Carol, 'think before you eat' - I wish I could always remember that saying at this time fo year :o) Interesting hub!
