Rosemary Brown - The True Story of the Amazing Ghostly Composers

Rosemary Brown Psychic

Rosemary Brown Psychic

When Mrs Rosemary Brown saw the appearance of Igor Stravinsky standing in front of her, 14 months after his death, she was not surprised. Why? Because he was only one of 20 dead composers who had visited her to use her extraordinary talent. Rosemary is one of the most famous Psychic Mediums of her time. Composing music with the help of the Spirit World.

When Rosemary was only 7 years old she was introduced to the world of ghostly Musicians. A Spirit with long white hair and a flowing black cassock appeared, and told her he was a composer, and would help her become a famous musician one day. At this stage, Rosemary didn't realise who he was, it wasn't until ten years later did she realise that she had seen the ghost of Franz List.

Rosemary’s mother and grandmother were psychic, and she displayed signs of psychic power when she was a child. The first example was that she told her parents about things that had happened to them before she was born. When asked how she knew, she said that the visitors had told her.

Liszt did not appear to her until 1964 by which time Rosemary had married and brought up two children. The family lived in a Victorian terraced house in Balham South London. And by this time, Rosemary was a middle aged widow.

Before 1964 she had little interest in music and had minimal instruction in it. She only had a second hand piano and had taken a few lessons over a year. According to another parishioner, Rosemary was useless at playing and struggled to play the simplest hymn. This was later disputed by investigators, but nobody came forward to say that she had indeed had many more lessons. But still the suspicion continued throughout her life.

Magical Music From The Immortals

When Liszt renewed contact with her, much to everyone’s amazement, Rosemary started to write down all the music sent her by the Composers. Liszt was sending her his original compositions, along with Beethoven, Bach, Chopin. Shubert and Rachmaninov.

For the woman who had absolutely no understanding of music, these beautiful pieces seem to come out of midair. Or through the ghostly ether.

This included a 40 page Schubert sonata, a Fantaisie Impromptu in three movements by Chopin, 12 songs by Shubert again, and two sonatas by Beethoven.

Each composer had his own way of dictating to Rosemary. Liszt controlled her hands as she wrote down the notes, others pushed her hands onto the right keys.

According to Rosemary, Schubert tried singing, but he had a terrible voice, and Beethoven and Bach simply dictated the notes, which Rosemary complained about as she said she had no idea what the end product would sound like!

All the composers spoke to her in English which she said doesn't surprise her, as she firmly believes they all went on to learn more in their ghostly state. She did, however state that when they get annoyed or disturbed in anyway, they would revert back to their own language. Beethoven would exclaim, 'Mein Gott!' Whenever the doorbell rang and they were hard at work!

Rosemary described the composers in detail, in fact she said they could be very funny. Beethoven, now he wasn’t deaf, was quite pleasant! Debussy wore strange clothes, and would have been a great hippy! And Chopin kept screaming something in French. It was only later that she realised he was telling her the bathtub was flooding!

What The Critics Say

Most of the musical critics of the time agreed that Rosemary’s transcriptions were much in the style of the great composers. Some said they were forgeries but couldn't explain how on earth she did it. Everyone was aware of her lack of musical knowledge.

The whole of the music community had no idea what was going on. She was thoroughly investigated, by both musicians and psychologists. And not one of them could find any evidence of her cheating. In fact after meeting her, they were all convinced of her innocence.

Maurice Barbanell, editor of the London based Psychic News said at the time, ‘She appears to be a medium who is both clairvoyant and clairaudient. Many hundreds of mediums claim to have done this, the only difference is that Rosemary talks to famous Composers’.

Other explanations were that the Composers had left behind music when they died, and Rosemary was somehow ‘psychically’ picking them up, which is rather bizarre in itself!

Hephzibah Menuhin, the concert pianist and sister of Yehudi, was also very impressed. She said when interviewed, ‘There is no question but that she is a very sincere woman. The music is absolutely in the style of these composers’

Alan Rich, a music critic of New York magazine stated that after hearing some of the work in question he decided that they were just substandard reworkings of some of their better known pieces.

However it turned out that what he had been listening too was in fact only the simpler pieces. There were other compositions that were much more subtle and complex.

Paranormal Voice Of Chopin

Over the following years, Rosemary told the media that she had been visited by such ghosts as Shakespeare, Van Gogh and St. Paul purely to prove the existence of the Afterlife. She went on to write three books of her channelling and made a number of recordings.

She died on November the 16th 2001 at the age of 85. She took with her the secrets of her Spirit Music, and her friendship with her Ghostly Great Composers..

Excellent, Nell. There are many unknowns, but I wonder if I could get Prince, James Brown, or Freddy Mercury to show up and give me a great All joking aside, this is an incredible story, and goes to show we can be open to life changing experiences. As always, a wonderful and thought provoking read.

In fact two new works inspired by Chopin throgh Rosemary Brown were recently recorded in Copacabana, Brazil, las June by a young Brazilian pianist Erico Bomfim.

Érico is only 21 years old, is finishing his graduation in piano and has a strong interest in R. Brown music to such extent that he intends to dedicate much of his time to her music. See:

Samuel E. Richardson from Salt Lake City, Utah on March 19, 2012:

Very fascinating! My wife heard very beautiful music; women singing in high, pure voices. It was in an LDS temple. When she asked someone what the music was called, the person responded, "There is no music playing."

Nell Rose (author) from England on March 04, 2012:

Hi, The Writers Dog, Wow! now that is synchronicity! lol! I used to attend the local Spiritualist Church too, but not for years, I don't think there is one in my town, thanks for reading, cheers nell

The Writers Dog on March 04, 2012:

If this is not synchronicity, I do not know what is! I am a Spritualist and attend our local Spiritualist Church. Today's guest speaker gave a talk on Rosemary Brown and her work through Spirit with Liszt, Chopin, and other composers who has passed.

Thanks for a great Hub. Voted up!

Hi, Eiddwen, thanks for reading, I hope you are having a great saturday! cheers nell

Nell Rose (author) from England on November 26, 2011:

Hi, Alastar, she is fascinating, I wish I had discovered her before, as someone said above, she must have got it from somewhere otherwise she would have just written them under her own name, I do wish they would study people like this more, instead of labelling it under 'psychic', then perhaps more people would know, thanks for reading, cheers nell

Eiddwen from Wales on November 26, 2011:

Wow Nell you have come up trumps here without a doubt.

An up up and away!!!

Take care and enjoy the rest of your day.

Alastar Packer from North Carolina on November 26, 2011:

Mein Gott is this an intriguing one you've brought out here Nell. I believe she was a true medium and was sincere. The only question is the source of her notables-and I don't mean that in a negative way. You could be right about her unconscious mind tapping into the Source Field but that still begs the question why it would be so specific. More likely a source directly contacting her, but again, what's the true nature of the positive force. Just speculating- tack Nell.

Nell Rose (author) from England on November 26, 2011:

Hi, Lol! maybe you are right, I am going to get out of there if they start producing ectoplasm!

purp-drag913 from West Michigan, USA. on November 25, 2011:

Yeah, we'll look for smoke and mirrors... ;o)

Nell Rose (author) from England on November 25, 2011:

Hi, Alicia, people like this do fascinate me too, amazing how the do it, thanks for reading, cheers nell

Hi, Steph, so do you think she was genuine? you sound like the best person to ask! lol! thanks for reading, cheers nell

Nell Rose (author) from England on November 25, 2011:

Hi, purp, sorry I got lost with the comments! lol! that sounds interesting, I would love to be there when they do it, maybe we would be able to figure it out, thanks for reading, cheers nell

Nell Rose (author) from England on November 25, 2011:

Hi, Lee, thanks for reading, I don't think we have enough knowledge to know exactly where this info comes from, some say ghosts others say demons, I can't believe that a demon would take the time to write great composers music, but who knows? I personally think it may be just her subconscious mind, cheers nell

LeeWalls from United States on November 24, 2011:

I'd never heard about her but people don't realize that their fascination with ghosts is nothing other than demons, something they should seriously stay away from.

Stephanie Marshall from Bend, Oregon on November 23, 2011:

Totally fascinating and interesting! I played the piano for years (ages 5 through 25) and still occasionally "tickle the ivories." This hub about "music from beyond" is nothing I have ever heard before. I literally have chills! Rated up - love it! Best, Steph

Linda Crampton from British Columbia, Canada on November 23, 2011:

This is a fascinating hub, Nell. Whether or not Rosemary Brown was actually channeling famous composers, it's interesting to read about her life. Thanks for the information.

purp-drag913 from West Michigan, USA. on November 23, 2011:

I have to admit; I thought this was a fiction piece. I've never heard of this lady, but had heard of a man who could somehow "channel" great artists by drawing, or painting their work. I've always been fasinated by stuff like this. Great hub!

Nell Rose (author) from England on November 23, 2011:

Hi, Green Lotus, I believe in them too, but that thought always nags at me! lol! did she really do that? I think she was amazing, I only came across her in an old book and then looked up some more information and was amazed! thanks so much as always, and good luck for your project, cheers nell

Hillary from Atlanta, GA on November 23, 2011:

I loved how you told this wonderful story Nell. I'm always awed and amazed when someone exhibits this kind of uncanny talent. I believe in psychic experiences and coincidentally (what do you know) I'm working on a psychic project right now. Rated up and useful. Useful, because we need more well-written articles like this :) Thanks!

Nell Rose (author) from England on November 23, 2011:

Hi, Audrey, it is amazing how she did it, I would love to have sat next to her when she did it, just to see if I could hear it too! mind you I would probably have freaked out! lol! thanks again nell

Hi, beth, good point! never thought of that! I do believe that she believed it, I wish that they had got scientists to study it more though, I think the trouble with psychic anything is the fact that its put into the entertainment genre, it should be taken seriously and studying it would prove it, thanks again nell

Nell Rose (author) from England on November 23, 2011:

Hi, Polly, thanks for reading, and happy Thanksgiving!

Nell Rose (author) from England on November 23, 2011:

Hi, CMHypno, yes I agree, I would love to sit and watch her, mind you its too late now, but it will be interesting to see if she 'comes through' to another medium! thanks again nell

Nell Rose (author) from England on November 23, 2011:

Hi, Sonia, I believe that she did, only it never really said in the research, it's a strange tale, but its a lovely idea if it is true, thanks nell

Nell Rose (author) from England on November 23, 2011:

Hi, christopher, I don't remember her from years ago, I just came across her recently, but it is a strange case, if its true then wow! I tend to believe in the tapping into the subconscious mind theory, we don't really know about 7 tenths of the brain, but who knows? thanks again nell

Beth Perry from Tennesee on November 23, 2011:

Well, I tend to believe she was genuine. If not she might as well have composed under her own name.

Very interesting hub!

Nell Rose (author) from England on November 23, 2011:

Hi, sweetoneangel, that made me laugh too! I would love to believe it, part of me does, but that little part of my brain saying no keeps popping up! I think I do believe it though, thanks for reading, cheers nell

Audrey Kirchner from Washington on November 23, 2011:

Definitely very interesting as I'd love to be able to channel some of the classic composers~ Or better yet s singer. Hard to call her a fake when she is so definitely getting her talent from 'somewhere' and 'someones'. Interesting article, as always, Nell!

Pollyannalana from US on November 23, 2011:

Wow, so interesting Nell! Happy Thanksgiving!

CMHypno from Other Side of the Sun on November 23, 2011:

Cool hub Nell. It is amazing how mediums all work differently and it must have been fascinating to watch her composing.

Sonia Perozzi from California on November 23, 2011:

Love this hub, really got me thinking. My biggest question is was she able to suddenly play the pieces on the piano as well?

Christopher Antony Meade from Gillingham Kent. United Kingdom on November 23, 2011:

I remember seeing her on television years ago, and I was very impressed. She came across as very sincere, and not trying to lie. The music seemed pretty genuine as well.

sweetoneangel from New Jersey on November 22, 2011:

Great hub thumbs up. I liked the part of chopin screaming at her in french. Voting up
