Most TV Evangelists are an Abomination and Guilty of Heresy

I recently wrote a hub about Catholicism, I am not the sort that believes in having favorites and if the truth is of any importance all things must pass through it's corridors. T.V. Evangelists are no exception. I have found that most, and I do say most because not every single T.V. Evangelist is a heretic, T.V. Evangelists are complete heretics.

Most of them teach what I call the blab it and grab it version of Christianity. In other words all you have to do is believe something and God (also knows as Santa Clause) will grant your every wish. If you are sick and don't get well it's because you didn't have enough faith, if you are poor, it's because you don't give enough money (usually to the T.V. Evangelist's ministry). On and on it goes. Health, wealth and prosperity, they all espouse it, but is it biblical? What do the T.V. Evangelist's really believe and what does Jesus say?

Let's look at Joel Osteen. His ministry has been dubbed “Christianity Lite” because he would like to make sure that he never offends anyone.

Now what did Jesus say? He said that

Mat 5:11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Mat 5:12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Mat 10:22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

Luke 6:26 Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.

Now let's take Benny Hinn:

Scroll to Continue

Here are some quotes by him:

“Are you ready for some real revelation are god”

“God will begin to prosper you, for money always follows righteousness”

“Poverty is from the devil and God wants all Christians to be prosperous”

Jan and Paul Crouch's Mansion

Jan and Paul Crouch's Mansion

These are but a few examples, there are many more but now let's look at what the Bible says:

Mat 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Mark 10:18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

Mark 12:29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

Mark 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

Mark 12:31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

Mark 12:32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:

Matthew 19:23 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 19:24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Luke 6:24 But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.

2 Corinthians 6:10 As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

1 Timothy 6:7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

1 Timothy 6:8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

1 Timothy 6:9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

I think through these two examples of embody the bulk of the heretical teaching currently blasted on T.V.'s across the country. What amazes me is that anyone listens to them at all, but they do and in great numbers. The book of Revelation describes a church that will declare that they are rich and yet will be dreadfully poor, wretched and naked, who can doubt that this is the church of our age?

I'm so sorry you had to learn this way. I will pray for your daughter. I know it's hard but if she dies and she is a Christian she will be in such a great place that if you knew you would be jealous of her! Heaven is soooo much better than earth that I think God keeps it from us so that we wont hurry up the life process to get there :) ALL THINGS WORK TOWARDS GOOD FOR THEM THAT LOVE THE LORD.

Larry Fardette on November 27, 2013:

My wife and I Love the Lord Jesus Christ. Unfortunately we just learned a hard and disappointing truth about televangelists. Our 26 year old daughter Katrina, is dying from multiple health issues. She is our only daughter. We reached out to 3 ministries that we have supported over the years for help. John Hagee ministries, Jonathan Bernis-Jewish Voice Minstries and Pat Robertson-700 Club/Operation Blessing. All of these Ministries gave us the same response. They claim that their mandates state they can't help us concerning surgery for our daughter. What about the mandate of Jesus if you have it give it? Again I ask these T.V. non profit Moguls if they would take a personal offering concerning our daughter since our money made them millionaires in the first place. What do you think their answer was?

Brie Hoffman (author) from Manhattan on July 09, 2012:

Yes, I know Jesus Christ personally and He said that HE IS THE TRUTH!

SwordofManticorE from Burlington on July 09, 2012:

What? Are saying that YOU know the truth?

Brie Hoffman (author) from Manhattan on July 09, 2012:

I would say then..that those Christians are not Christians at all but false converts.

SwordofManticorE from Burlington on July 09, 2012:

I would go as far to say that most Christians (including myself) are guilty of herecy.

Brie Hoffman (author) from Manhattan on September 26, 2011:

I've never heard of either of them, but I, like you, don't watch TV preachers.

HOOWANTSTONO on September 26, 2011:

Yes I agree, there are some disturbing preachers out there, although I dont watch TV ministers, but there are only two I could say you could learn from...Andrew Womack, and Joseph Prince.....but you will probably get those that dont like them too.

Just be wary not to follow any as God..

Brie Hoffman (author) from Manhattan on September 26, 2011:

I agree Hester, he is the only one that I am aware of on TV that is biblically sound.

Hester Bunch on September 25, 2011:

I also love to hear Charles Stanley preach. He is an astounding good teacher of the Bible and he interputes it so well.I have learned a lot from his Bible study and still am.I hope some of you will check him out good, and see if you don't also learn from him. In God's love, Sissie

Brie Hoffman (author) from Manhattan on July 14, 2011:

The thing is are you seeking after money or God, God said you can't serve both. Btw, no where does it say its a sin to be poor.

davidkaluge on July 14, 2011:

Well, I do not see anything different here than the usual method of people using some bible verses to support their claim while they ignore other verses. The love of money or wealth is not good however poverty may also be a sin if you fail to work yourself out of it. Do you want men to depend on others when they can work and help themselves and others? Paul taught against such people. Jesus also said, seek ye first the kingdom of God and all these things shall be added. He didn't say you ll be poor after it.

Yes I AM, he is not of God, he is of the evil one! I think it is you who should be careful!

Debradoo from Cocoa, Florida on October 14, 2010:

Brie Hoffman (author) from Manhattan on October 01, 2010:

Debradoo from Cocoa, Florida on October 01, 2010:

I won't be disappointed because my faith lies not in Benny Hinn nor Joel Osteen. My faith lies in the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, how can I be disappointed? And I truly do not pay much attention to the 6pm news. I find it to be usually biased. God bless.

HOOWANTSTONO on October 01, 2010:

You are correct, and there are more, and just hearing them on the "Gospel" channel moves me in a flash to change channel quickly

Brie Hoffman (author) from Manhattan on October 01, 2010:

Benny Hinn is a false prophet and so is Joel Olsteen, prepare to be disappointed. I'll be sure to update this blog when they are blasted all over the 6:00 news for some atrocity.

Debradoo from Cocoa, Florida on October 01, 2010:

Benny Hinn is a wonderful teacher if one would ever take the time to listen. And Joel Osteen is about building up the body of Christ vs. tearing down the body of believers. Prepare to be amazed, Brie (not sure if 'tactics' is the right word, though). ;-)

I gave up on the God Channel when they wrote to me explaining that they desperately needed a couple of million in order to keep broadcasting (a few years back) and my immediate thoughts were... Well if Gods not sending it to them, I definitely shouldn't!

God will provide provision for those who work for Him, He is a great boss and never late in paying His workers, though I have noticed that He never seems to send the resources until you really need them.

His accounting system does not allow for His resources to just sit around not being used.

Good hub, always appropiate to expose the hirelings!

Brie Hoffman (author) from Manhattan on April 26, 2010:

Thanks for the well thought out comments Tonyathubpages.

TonyAtHubPages on April 26, 2010:

Quite a hub!

A number of things...

1. Televangelists do emphasize money for sure.

However, taking the opposite tack isn't accurate, either.

"Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.” (Psalms 35:27 AV)

The point to remember is the following...

“Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.” (Proverbs 23:4 AV)

Obedience ( to God, not the televangelists) is the key...

“If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:” (Isaiah 1:19 AV)

2. the ye are gods thing

Puppies grow up to be dogs; kittens grow up to be cats.

We're God's children.

This issue is quite important, since it was one of the things the pharisees wanted to kill Jesus for.

3. Your comment: "Love without Truth is not love."

Excellent point. Many people skip that.

“God [is] a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24 AV)

Brie Hoffman (author) from Manhattan on March 24, 2010:

Nope, not at all because you are a Jew but because there is salvation in Jesus alone. So it doesn't matter whether you are a Jew, or a Muslim, or a Catholic, or an Atheist, salvation comes through Him only. You can pay for your own sins or you can let someone else pay, it's up to you, your choice.

The whole world can't be changed by a simple post. I wrote about something that I feel is true and will defend its voracity, that is all.

Andrew0208 from Zion on March 21, 2010:

They're two different things. Your contest on the issue of a beliver's true identity as a god. Remember that the church or any Christian setup and organizations are not where you meet perfect people but the consistent walk in His word and love will perfect all that concerns any child of God who is still walking in the flesh.

Good you pointed some seemingly odds but what will you do about it? Is it to condemn and leave it that way or point it out, pray and believe God for a change in state for good; in fact this is what walking in love is all about. Thanks and God bless you.

Brie Hoffman (author) from Manhattan on March 20, 2010:

Because God is Love and Satan is the father of all lies, you cannot have both love and lies (absence of truth).

Andrew0208 from Zion on March 20, 2010:

How related?

Brie Hoffman (author) from Manhattan on March 20, 2010:

Love without Truth is not love. See the comments by Judah's Daughter

Andrew0208 from Zion on March 20, 2010:

Hi Brie Hoffman, it is true that Herod was a nasty proud King, he wasn't striken dead because people appluaded him and called him a god on his oration but his arrogance and pride towards God's word and servants then. He always tried to mock the King of Kings and shouldered himself in the place of God as a rival.

Ye are gods in Christ Jesus. The Bible is not for any sentimental judgement and expressions but we must understand the finished works of Christ. Love is the anchor of Life and Law; minus it, any religion, religious laws, and set are 100% empty and unfruitful in our walk with God(spirit).

Brie Hoffman (author) from Manhattan on March 19, 2010:

Maybe its just that those that would be "teachers" are held to a higher standard.

Andrew Grosjean from Detroit on March 19, 2010:

The issue about TV vs. Radio preachers got me thinking about the Bible's general condemnation of the eye gate and general commendation of the ear gate. "Lust of the eyes" is bad. "Faith commeth by hearing" in spite of the fact that our society says "Seeing is believing." I wonder if there is not something in the human nature that tends to make the visual nature more prone to improper and impure things even in "Bible Teachers."

Brie Hoffman (author) from Manhattan on March 19, 2010:

Very true Judah's Daughter, unfortunately many people don't understand the difference and that verse is pulled out and twisted.

hubhub2, thanks for writing I'm right there with you.

hubhub2 from Post Falls, Idaho on March 18, 2010:

Yes - GREAT. For many, many years I've told people whom I speak with about Christ NOT to look toward TV Evangelists for information about Jesus nor Biblical information in general. I in fact tell them not to even turn on TBN et al. Yes, there are a few good ones, but...!

When speaking with at least somewhat mature Believers I still don't encourage the hearing of TV Con Artists for fear their root will cease to develop. If I did encourage TBN et al it would be like I'm telling people to lean their ear close to all the rattle snakes until they find one who isn't. Good for you!

Is it any wonder Jesus says that in the Last Days (of which we are now on the very brink) there will be a great falling away? Look at the shallow teaching the masses are taught is genuine. They'll fall quickly.

Judah's Daughter from Roseville, CA on March 18, 2010:

I used to think that "ye are gods" was heretical, until I did a study of the word "God" all throughout the Old Testament, which is "elohim" (theos in Greek). Yehovah (YHWH) is LORD, yet we are part of His body; this is why we are part of "elohim" or stated as "gods", for "elohim" is the word used in Jesus' statement (John 10:35). We are not little gods in and of ourselves, but are in Christ, and are knit together as one in Him (as He and the Father are one; husband and wife are one ~ the Greek word "heis"). I only recently studied up on this and it's in my hub "GOD: Let Us Make Man In Our Image?"

I agree whole-heartedly with the examples you gave in this hub ~ these guys are over the top. Joel Osteen won't even talk about hell. The prosperity gospel is "another gospel" than that preached by the Apostles and is to be accursed (Gal 1:8). And I love Charles Stanley! Blessings to all ~~ JD

Act 12:21 And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.

Act 12:22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.

Act 12:23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

Maybe you should read the ENTIRE Bible!

Andrew0208 from Zion on March 18, 2010:

I understand that by a simple sampling that in every 12, you'll find a Judas but when it comes to the Word of God, there're no sentiments. If you're a believer in Christ Jesus, I don't mean a religionist who enjoys playing religion and it's dirty associated politics.

The TV evangelists cannot be categorized to be preaching heresy. I do not buy that!

Truly, we have to understand the reason(why) and the finished work of Christ. Persecutions are inevitable but thanks be God who made His plans known to us in Jeremiah 29:11.

Jesus said "ye are gods"(John 10:35) and that is what we are in Christ. It's no Heresy! Religion is no God and God is not religion. We ought to know whom we're in Christ. The Scripture is beyond religion, for He said "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." John 6:63

BostonUnit on March 17, 2010:

Thanks for your blog. I generally agree with what you wrote and I also agree that KJV is best as well. And I agree with the general assessment from PastorAndrew that radio ministries are better than TV.

However, I would also like to point out that there are some excellent TV ministries that have a solid understanding of scripture and they teach a very biblical message.

One that comes to mind is Charles Stanley.

I wonder if you should have mentioned a few by name that you might recommend. It might serve as an example of one should distinguish the good from the bad. Just a thought.

As usual, I enjoy reading your posts and I generally read all the submitted comments as well.
