The Necessity of Prayer

"Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." Matthew 26:41 (KJV)

In our fast paced life today, most of us are dealing with a lot of responsibilities to take in each day. And we cannot avoid the fact that some days we didn't think of praying because we come to seek our gadgets first; preparing for school/work; and other stuff that is on our mind that we come to forget to pray to God.

And so because of the deficiency of prayer, people are easily to commit sins such as crimes; adultery; cheating; stealing; fighting against one another and so forth. Thus, we tend to fall into Satan's domain because of our vulnerability and not wanting to seek for a rescue.

Why does Jesus tell us to watch and pray?

Jesus Christ addresses our necessity to pray at all times because He knows that we are prone to temptation just like what happened to His disciples while they were in the Gethsemane wherein Christ wakes them up for how many times and yet finds them asleep.

You see Satan is wandering around looking for someone to devour and if he finds you being weak in faith, he will surely bring your weaknesses in front of you so you might fall into the pit of sin.

Why do we need to pray? Is it for some sort of a habit?or a necessity to live?

Ellen White states in her Book of Writing in titled Prayer, "Prayer is the breath of the soul. It is the secret of spiritual power. No other means of grace can be substituted and the health of the soul be preserved. Prayer brings the heart into immediate contact with the Wellspring of life, and strengthens the sinew and muscle of the religious experience. Neglect the exercise of prayer, or engage in prayer spasmodically, now and then, as seems convenient, and you lose your hold on God. The spiritual faculties lose their vitality, the religious experience lacks health and vigor."(Pr 12.4) As correspondingly, Prayer is necessary for us humans to be able to continue living with the Holy Spirit and find the strength to fight the temptation.

Imagine yourself not being able to breathe for more than 1 minute, what would likely happen to you is to suffer and longing to catch another breath for you to be safe. Prayer is simply like that, a necessity of every individual to live.

On the whole, God wants us to pray for us to;

•Be aware of our surroundings

There are lots of happenings in our surroundings that might pull us from the way of truth and draw us closer to the worldly things instead of God. So being vigilant is a smart thing to do for you to be away from danger of sin. Further, not all things we seen to be good and safe does not actually always lead us to good destinations. Asa Don Brown once said that " Our perceptions are influenced by our surroundings" as a result we should not neglect to see whether our circle of friends, to which we live in, is helping us come closer to our Savior or not.

•Be aware of ourselves

2 Corinthians 13:5 says that "Look closely at yourselves. Test yourselves to see if you are living in the faith. Don’t you realize that Christ Jesus is in you? Of course, if you fail the test, he is not in you." is indeed true in telling us that we need to examine ourselves. Because sometimes, it is our own selves that bring us far from God. For we are too focused on our own pleasure rather than prioritizing God's word. Hence, Self-awareness is important for individuals to not be astray in sin.

•Be aware of our weaknesses

By acknowledging that we are defenseless against temptation, we will come to seek for the protection of the Lord. Thus, God's power cannot fully work in us unless we are recognizing that we need God to give us strength.

We can see in the book of 2 Corinthians 12:9 saying "And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me." Correspondingly, if a person is aware of his weaknesses then he will surely humble himself before God and before men.

•Be aware of Jesus soon return

Many people are not aware of the soon return of our Savior for they are enjoying what the world offers. Thus controlling their wealth and businesses in life is more important than letting God control it for them. As a result, they come to be ignorant of the signs that Christ is coming. On top of that, they comfortably let Satan control them more than God consciously and subconsciously.

Closing Thoughts

Let's make prayer as both a habit and a necessity. Indeed, it is by the works of the Holy Spirit that moved us to pray. And so, we must let the Holy Spirit work in us by following what we know is good and according to our Creator.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 "We pray that God himself, the God of peace, will make you pure—belonging only to him. We pray that your whole self—spirit, soul, and body—will be kept safe and be blameless when our Lord Jesus Christ comes." It emphasizes that Christ is coming again and He is hoping that we are all ready and are not ignorant of His teaching including the resistance to temptation.

God Bless!
