Over three decades ago I become interested in the Bible, having drank from the heavenly cup once, I have not been tired to drink more

8) Summary of What This Word, “sâmak” Implies

i) The author of this verse opens the verse with word of prayer to the Lord by saying “uphold/ sustain/lift me up”. He acknowledges the Lord as the only one, who can uphold him in the struggles of life,

ii) The previous verse shows what the author has seen, some evildoers, how they are manipulating people luring them to do what God does not like, therefore, he prays that God sustains him so he will keep on keeping the commandments of Yahweh.

“Psa 119:115 Depart from me, ye evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God.”

To keep the laws of the Lord in this world we need the assistance of God, we need his sustenance, we need him to lift us up above principalities and powers to keep on doing his will.

“Pro 30:7 Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die:

Pro 30:8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:”

iii) He asks for God’s lifting so that he will continue to be of help to others because it is a person who is on his feet that can raise someone who has fallen up.

i) Spoken Word:

By the spoken word in this sense I mean those things that God has said to you as a person, perhaps through dreaming, vision, his messengers, impression of the spirit upon your heart among others.

“Num 12:6 And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.”

Through these means God still speaks to his children in the world today. Let us see an example of a man who is non Jew that God speaks to through vision on what to do.

“Act 10:3 He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.

Act 10:4 And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.”

He indeed did what was instructed and his life changed totally.

As believers in this dispensation, through these means too we may be instructed by God, perhaps on our family, our work, the traveling we want to embark upon among others. If we have had such instructions and we are yet to receive the confirmation or physical manifestation of what he has spoken to us, we shall do well by talking to him as this psalmist has done that he should do what he has said as he has promised.

“Isa 43:26 Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified.”

We can see above that prophet Isaiah says God says we should put him in remembrance…, what shall we put him in remembrance of? We shall put him in remembrance of those things he has said and promised us, as father Abraham did and other patriarchs of old that made God to answer them.

B) According to Thy Word

The author of this verse in continuation of his plea with Yahweh adds basis for his plea and it is that he should be lifted up or sustained in accordance with what he has said.

“Psa 119:116 Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope.”

The Hebrew word for “word” here is “אֶמְרָה אִמְרָה”, when romanticized it becomes 'imrâh 'emrâh (phonetic spelling is im-raw', em-raw') which means speech, word, commandment.

The word here which means the spoken word or the written word (commandment) is what he wants God to behold, remember in sustaining him.

ii) Written Word:

Another meaning for “'imrâh 'emrâh” which is the word the author states here is the written word. By this written word it means those words written in the bible.

“2Ti_3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”

God also counsels Joshua after Prophet Moses death on the need to make the Word of God, which is the word of the Law his only priority.

“Jos 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”

God told him that if he can do that then, he shall make his way prosperous and have good success on earth.

Every one of us aspires to have success on earth, to have successes that we aspire to have, we need to know what Yahweh has for us in his written word which is the bible.

There are several words of promises for us, believers in the bible. It behoves us to study this word to know those things in there for us. Some of the words of promises are

“Jer 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

Isa 41:10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Isa 41:11 Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with thee shall perish.

Php 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

These are some of the words contained in the bible for believers globally.

The bible is replete with these words of promises to us, and we should put them to use in asking for his lifting and sustenance in all our daily endeavors. The more we use the word, the more we receive his strength for sustenance and promotion.

It is the measure to which we know the word of God that we shall enjoy him.
