A Liar, a Lunatic or Lord

Is Jesus Christ God’s Son, or was he simply an amazing man and a great prophet? Most of the world views Jesus as a good teacher or a prophet. The question should be was Jesus a liar, a lunatic or Lord? Let us review what Jesus and others had to say about who he was.

Jesus’ Claims About Himself

· Jesus Claimed to be the Only way to God: “I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father but by me” John 14:6.

· Jesus Claimed to be God: “’I tell you the truth,’ Jesus answered, ‘before Abraham was born, I am!’” John 8:58

· Jesus Claimed to be the King of the Jews:“Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied.” Matthew 27:11

· Jesus Claimed to be Able to Forgive Sins: “Then Jesus said to her, ‘Your sins are forgiven.’ The other guests began to say among themselves, ‘Who is this who even forgives sins?’” Luke 7:48-49

· Jesus Predicted His Death and Resurrection: “From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” Matthew 16:21

· Jesus Claimed to be Sinless: “Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God” John 8:46-47

Which Jesus do you Follow?

What did Others say About Him?

Let us look at briefly what others had to say about Jesus:

The Disciples (Matthew 16:13-16)

Jesus asks his disciples who do people say he is. They respond by saying that some people said he was Elijah, Jeremiah, one of the prophets, or John the Baptist. Jesus asked them directly what their opinion of Jesus was. Peter responded that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God. Did Jesus rebuke him for calling him God’s Son? No.

The Demons

Luke 4:34 says, “Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are-the Holy One of God!” Who but God alone destroy demons? The demons even testified as who Jesus was.

Pontius Pilate (Matthew 27:1-26)

After Jesus was arrested and the religious leaders finally agreed upon a false charge, they turned Jesus over to Pontius Pilate for trial. Pilate questioned Jesus and he could not find any basis for the charges brought against him. Pilate wanted to free Jesus, but the religious leaders stirred up the people into a frenzy to have Jesus crucified.

Saul on the Road to Damascus (Acts 9:3-5)

Saul was a Pharisee of Pharisees. He was spent his youth learning to be one of Israel’s religious leaders. He was actively persecuting Christians shortly after the death and resurrection of Jesus. Paul was traveling to Damascus to persecute the church there, when all of a sudden a great light blinded him. He fell down and heard a voice ask him why he was persecuting him. “’Who are you, Lord?’ Saul asked. ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting’” Acts 9:5. Saul called him “Lord.” Saul became Paul who was a bold witness for Jesus and was himself persecuted. The change in Saul is evidence that Jesus was more than a good teacher. It was a complete 180-degree turn around.

Decision Time: Is Jesus a Liar, a Lunatic, or Lord?

The question that all of us must answer is Jesus a liar, a lunatic, or Lord. It is impossible for Jesus to be just a good teacher or great prophet because he claimed to be God. Either he is God or he is lying or is crazy. There are no other options to choose. Good teachers do not claim to be something they are not because they would no longer be good. Good teachers are not lunatics. They are sane and have credibility. The claims of Jesus made are all or nothing claims. He did not leave any wiggle room. I believe that Jesus is Lord. The strongest evidence is the change in boldness of his disciples. At the time of Jesus’ arrest, they all fled. They locked themselves in a room in Jerusalem out of fear after Jesus had died. They were among the first people to see Jesus after he rose from the grave. After Jesus ascended to heaven, it was his disciples, filled with the Holy Spirit, who went out and boldly proclaimed that Jesus was the Son of God and that he rose from the dead. Almost all of Jesus’ disciples were martyred proclaiming that Jesus died for the sins of the world and rose again. All they had to do is confess that Jesus was not Lord and that he was still dead. That would have saved their lives. How many people do you know that would willingly die for something that they know is a lie? I cannot think of very many. In fact, most people would lie to protect their own necks. Another piece of strong evidence is the life of Paul. He was arresting and murdering Christians for their faith until one day when Jesus confronted him on the road to Damascus. Paul went on to be the greatest missionary that this world has ever known. He boldly preached Christ crucified all over the Roman Empire and he was martyred for his faith.

The Next Step

If Jesus is Lord we must explore his teachings. What was his mission in coming to Earth? He came to lay down his life as a perfect sacrifice to pay the debt that we owe to God for our sins. What is sin? Sin is any word, thought, or deed that is contrary to the Word of God. Things like lying, stealing, lust, adultery, blasphemy, coveting your neighbor’s possessions, dishonoring your parents, etc. If you are honest with yourself in reviewing the previous list you will admit that you are a sinner. I know that I am. I have broken God’s commands repeatedly. The Bible says that all have sinned and fall short of God’s holy standard. It also says that the penalty of committing just one sin is eternal death. Apart for Jesus, we are condemned to spend an eternity apart from God in hell. How do we avoid this? How do we spend eternity with God? By repenting of our sins, which means to admit that we are a sinner and to turn away from our sins. Then we need to put our trust in Jesus and ask him to save us and believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead. If you would like to put your trust in Jesus, pray a prayer like this and mean it with all your heart:

“Lord, have mercy on me. I confess that I am a sinner and that Jesus died for my sins. He alone is my hope of salvation. I ask you to come into my life and save me from my sins. Thank you for loving me so much. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Amen! I could not agree with you more

God Bless!

Cherry Ann from New York on November 25, 2012:

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.

John 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

I stand by these words above and believe Jesus Christ to be God. The truth stands by itself. If God said it, I believe it and it is so. Amen.
