How to study Kundali / Birth Chart for Career Analysis

How to study Kundali / Birth Chart for Career Analysis

In Vedic Astrology, there’s a pretty elaborate process of figuring out your career. Every astrologer uses different measures to provide you with the most suitable option. However, I have noticed most of their prediction is based on your present circumstances and what your parents and siblings are currently doing, though not everyone follows the same method. In this article, I am going to discuss all possible ways of how to find your best suitable career through your birth chart.

There won’t be going to only one type of profession since most of the people today, as you must have noticed, are doing multiple jobs. Some of them have one main job and the rest is side gigs. Some people are involved in both active and passive incomes. There are countless varieties of how people manage multiple jobs. People are always trying to find what works for them and what doesn’t. In the process, they often lose money and time both, though with determination they do find their source of income.

By studying your birth chart you can conclude what all sort of fields you can go into without losing your money and wasting your time. The methods are explained in detail so you can analyze your chart all by yourself, but to understand them you need to learn the basics first. So, we begin with:

  1. What is ascendant?
  2. What are the good and bad planets for each ascendant?
  3. What is the meaning of houses in the birth chart?
  4. What are the degrees and combust planets?
  5. What are Atmakaraka and Amatyakaraka?
  6. What is the meaning of planets' debilitation and exaltation?
  7. What are the retrograde planets?
  8. What are Nakshatras in Vedic Astrology?
  9. Which Nakshatras affect your career?
  10. Which lord /deity plays a crucial role in your career development?
  11. What is the Ashtakvarga table?
  12. What planets and houses are responsible for job and business?
  13. What types of careers are signified by different houses and planets?
  14. What are the divisional charts and their significance?

After learning these details, we are going to learn the steps to study your birth chart for career analysis.

1. What is ascendant?

An ascendant is an astrological sign that ascends on the eastern horizon at the time of your birth. It varies by your birth date, time, and location.

The ascendant plays the most important role in astrology. It lets you know your true purpose of existence and how your life is going to roll out considering all the bad, good, and sudden events. The ascendant is also called the “rising sign” or “Lagna” in Hindi.

Note: Remember the rising sign is different from your moon and sun signs. Moon and sun signs are determined by the placements of sun and moon in your birth chart (or Kundali). On the other hand, the rising sign is determined by the zodiac sign that falls on the eastern horizon when the person is born.

2. What are the good and bad planets for each ascendant?

In every ascendant, certain planets out of Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Saturn, and Jupiter (for simplicity Sun and Moon are also referred to as planets in astrology) are bad and good depending on their placement in the chart. Planets that become the lord of 6th, 8th and 12th houses are considered bad or malefic. Planets that occupy Kendra Houses - 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th, and Trikona Houses - 5th and 9th are auspicious or good planets for the ascendant.

Some planets like Moon, Mercury, and Venus are naturally friendly, however, if they become the lord of the 6th, 8th, or 12th house, they are called functional malefic.

6th, 8th, and 12th houses are considered “Dusthana” Houses in every birth chart because they symbolize illness, death, and expenses respectively. Besides this general notion, there can be some other malefic planets as well depending on the ascendant. For example, the lord of the 8th house from the original 8th house i.e. the lord of the 3rd house is also considered malefic. However, it varies with the ascendant. To make it easier to understand, here is a chart along with the malefic planets for each ascendant.

Neutral Planets give auspicious/ inauspicious results based on their placement in the chart.

4. What are degrees and combust planets?

Degrees in your birth chart show how much the planet has traveled in a particular house. Degrees vary from 0 to 30. It’s said planets with the lowest degree are the weakest and those with the highest degree are the strongest. However, this is not through. The degrees of planets show that in a particular house, which Nakshatra are the planets falling in (We are going to Nakshatra later in this article).

Each house is governed by a certain lord and zodiac sign. These lords and signs belong to certain Nakshatras out of 27. So, here we go deeper to understand the exact meaning of various placements in your birth chart. Right now, we focus on degrees and combust planets. So, we will learn this concept a bit later.

Now coming to the combust planets. The planets are combusted when they are placed close to Sun within 6 degrees. These planets give negligible to average results. Rahu and Ketu don’t get combusted with Sun. This works only on Moon, Saturn, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus.

5. What are Atmakaraka and Amatyakaraka?

Atmakaraka is the planet with the highest degree. This planet signifies the soul purpose of the individual. Depending on which planet holds the highest degree, your soul purpose varies. To understand it better, the following explains the meaning of different Atmakaraka:

1. Sun

If Sun holds the highest degree, then you are a born leader. You can lead and inspire others. You have a charismatic personality and are intelligent and active. You can work great in government jobs, performing arts, politics as well as business. You want power, status, and worldwide fame. You need to learn to overcome your ego and stay humble.

2. Moon

If Moon holds the highest degree, you are compassionate and can connect emotionally with others. You can be either a psychic or a natural healer. People are attracted to you because of your gentle nature and soft-heartedness. You strongly desire relationships, but you need to learn to differentiate true feelings from fake ones. You need to set boundaries with different people so you are not taken advantage of.

3. Mercury

If Mercury holds the highest degree, you are a great communicator. You have exceptional managerial skills and intellectual. You are curious and humorous. You can be an entrepreneur. You often follow a business-like approach in dealing with other people even if they are your family members. You should avoid gossiping and learn to remain silent depending on the circumstances.

4. Venus

If Venus holds the highest degree, you are a pleasure-seeker. You have immense love for arts, romance, and luxuries. You want to express yourself creatively and can make a name in the entertainment field. You can be immoral at times as your desire for comforts and luxuries is extremely high. You should learn to control your superficial desires and practice spirituality.

5. Mars

If Mars holds the highest degree, you are a warrior who would fight and live for their passion. You are independent and confident. You are the protector of your loved ones. You can be hot-tempered most of the time which may make you a loner. You are extremely active and have in-born leadership qualities to lead others. This is different from the Sun. Sun symbolizes king-like leadership while Mars symbolizes army general like leadership. You are always ready to fight to get what you want. You should learn to control your vast energy and live in sync with others. Avoid using harsh words and try to empathize with the people around you.

6. Jupiter

If Jupiter holds the highest degree, you are all about knowledge and philosophy. You love to gain and share knowledge. You understand spirituality like no one else. You can become a great teacher or mentor and inspire others to live a humble life. You have self-awareness and are aware of your purpose. Make sure your knowledge doesn’t boost your ego and make you arrogant. You should learn to listen to others and respect their words.

7. Saturn

If Saturn holds the highest degree, you can be a strict disciplinarian. You can are perseverant and adamant to achieve your goals. You may face lots of hardships at an early age, but you the in-built strength to come out of it like a real hero. You are an inspiration to others. You have the endurance to get through difficult times and also help others stuck in similar situations. Your disciplinarian nature can be a bit overwhelming sometimes. You should respect others’ lifestyles and don’t force them to live by your principles.

8. Rahu

Rahu and Ketu have the same degree. In this case, Rahu becomes your Atmakaraka. Some astrologers don’t consider Rahu because it is an illusionary planet. However, it does play a part in shaping your personality. So, if Rahu holds the highest degree, you become pretty futuristic and gain immense love for foreign things. Rahu makes you curious to learn about the house and sign it sits in. For example, if Rahu sits in Taurus sign in the 12th house in your birth chart, then you desire comforts, luxuries, and want to travel to unknown places. As Venus is the lord of Taurus zodiac signs and the 12th house signifies travel and expenses, so you may indulge in over expenditure. You should learn to control your desires and avoid quick decisions. You need to preplan your day so you don’t overdo yourself and regret it later.

After the Atmakaraka, the planet with the second-highest degree becomes your Amatyakaraka. While Atmakaraka signifies your soul purpose, the Amatyakaraka shows through which path you can attain that purpose. Amatyakaraka can be any of the above 8 planets.

6. What is the meaning of planets' debilitation and exaltation?

The twelve zodiac signs, in Vedic astrology, are ruled by 7 planets. This means:

When these planets are in the same signs which they rule, they are at their best positions. When they are placed in certain signs in which they don’t feel at ease, they give bad results irrespective of their malefic or benefic nature. On the other hand, these seven planets feel exalted when placed in certain signs that they don’t rule except Mercury which feels exalted in its own sign i.e. Virgo. Exalted planets are capable of giving exceptional results until they are in conjunction or aspected by some malefic planets.

Here’s a table to let you know which planet gets exalted and debilitated in which signs. It also includes Rahu and Ketu though they don’t rule any signs.

7. What are retrograde planets?

When you check your birth chart, you must have noticed out of five planets (Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn), one or two planets are written with the letter (R). This means the planet(s) is/are in retrograde i.e. they are moving in a reverse direction. There are various notions regarding retrograde, the most widely accepted are the following:

  1. Planets don’t actually move in the reverse direction. They just appear to, when seen from the Earth.
  2. When the planet is retrograde in the birth chart, it gives slow results.
  3. When a malefic planet is retrograde, it’s somewhat good as they give slow bad results. However, their retrograde motion prolongs the individual’s adversities and he/she has to work harder for a longer time.
  4. When a benefic planet is retrograde, it’s bad as the good results are delayed. This means if an individual could achieve his/her goals in 5 years, it takes him/her 6-7 or even more years.
  5. The retrograde planets persuade individuals to introspect and achieve balance within themselves. Due to introspection and self-evaluation, these individuals have different thought processes with respect to others. This theory is applicable only if the planet is neither conjuncted nor aspected by any other planet.

The actual result can be predicted only after analyzing the complete birth chart.

8. What are Nakshatras in Vedic Astrology?

Nakshatra is a Hindi term for lunar mansion used in Vedic astrology. There are 28 Nakshatras, out of which only 27 are considered for prediction. The remaining one named Abhijit is used only when the time for an auspicious event is to be decided.

Each Nakshatra is further divided into quarters, which is called Padas in Hindi. In the Indian system, these Padas are often used for naming a newborn child. Nakshatras have specific symbols and are ruled by one of the nine planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu). The detail is provided in the table below:

9. Which Nakshatras affect your career?

Out of 27 Nakshatras, only 3 or 4 of them play a crucial role in deciding your career. These are extracted through the following method:

  1. Find your birth Nakshatra
  2. Find the Nakshatra where your Ascendant is placed in
  3. Find the Nakshatra where your Ascendant lord is placed in
  4. Find the Nakshatra of your 10th lord

You also need to check the Pada for each Nakshatra. The information is readily available with your birth chart. These Nakshatras can be all different or all same. Now, which one plays the most important role in your career? We are going to discuss that in a bit. Just keep reading.

10. Which lord /deity plays a crucial role in your career development?

In Vedic astrology, every 9 planets are governed by a particular Hindu deity. Depending on your ascendant, only one of them plays the most important role in your professional growth. This is decided by the 5th house.

Why 5th house?

10th house is merely used to find the career. 5th house is the 9th from the original 9th house. This means while the original 9th house symbolizes spirituality and luck in attaining higher goals, the 5th house symbolizes materialism and luck in achieving important aspects of your life. The 5th house covers your graduation, creativity, love prospects, and material luck. It is also the position from where you begin your career as the starting four houses only show yourself, family, siblings, and mother.

If your 5th house is strong, you have created a strong base to move ahead in life. That’s why we worship the Lord who rules the 5th house in your birth chart. Here’s the name of lords who rule the 5th house depending on your ascendant.

11. What is the Ashtakvarga table?

Some astrologers prefer the Ashtakvarga table for the final decision while some don’t. Ashtakvarga table is a point-based table. It shows the strength of each house by the points given by seven planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn) and the ascendant.

The total points are 337 out of which the highest individual score is 8. If any house receives less than 28, then it's considered weak. If any house receives above 28, it’s strong and will give exact results to the individual as predicted.

Here’s a sample Ashtakvarga table:

Let's say this is a Taurus Ascendant. Now the first house starts from the "2" number. The total points are given here are 37 means the individual has a strong personality. Now if we talk about career. For a job, the 6th house needs to be strong and for business, the 7th house needs to be strong. in this table, both the houses share the same number 22, which below the average 28. So, we need to look at other houses.

The houses 2nd, 3rd, and 9th have numbers 32, 37, and 31 respectively, which are way higher than 28. This respectively means he/she has huge savings, he/she is hard-working and has healthy luck. So, he/she can go into business. This was the most basic theory. For more accurate prediction, we need to consider transits and look at the table from different perspectives using different ascendants. This goes beyond the scope of this article. So meanwhile, you can use this table only to check the strength of your houses.

12. What planets and houses are responsible for job and business?

You already know what each house signifies in Vedic astrology. Let’s discuss first what each planet signifies:

To determine if a person should do job or business, there are various methods. However, this is only possible after the birth chart analysis. For now, let’s see which planets and houses play important role in deciding your job or business.

For job

We look at the strength of the Sun first. A strong Sun signifies authoritative jobs. You also need to check the strength of the 2nd, 6th, 10th, and 11th houses. In this 6th house is the most important for the job.

For business

We look at the strength of the Moon and Mercury. If both are strong, then the business is highly recommended. You also need to check the strength of the 2nd, 7th, 9th, and 11th houses. In this 7th house is the most important for the business.

13. What types of careers are signified by different houses and planets?

While the 10th house is considered the career house, the career can also be predicted from other houses as well depending on their strengths. The prediction is not only limited to the houses, but it also includes the planets who rule and sit in those houses. We also check the Nakshatras in which the planet is placed.

All this information is easily available when you look at your birth chart. So, there's nothing to fret about. Now, let's see what type of careers are signified by different houses, planets, and nakshatras.

14. What are the divisional charts and their significance?

There are 60 divisional charts for every single birth chart. Each of these divisional charts is made for specific purposes such as marriage, career, luck, strength, property, education, children, and so on.

Your ascendant chart is the most important of all, though. It gives the general prediction of your whole life. But to get accurate predictions, we need to look at the microscopic level for which divisional charts are used.

Since we are talking about careers, we need to look at D-9 and D-10 charts.

D-9 is the ninth divisional chart made from the 9th house of your birth chart. It is called "Navamasa". It is used to predict your life after 35. If the planets are strong here, then you have a promising long-life career.

D-10 chart is the tenth divisional chart made from the 10th house of your birth chart. It is called "Dasamsha". It is the most important chart for analyzing a career. Your D-10 ascendant lord needs to be strong for a healthy career.

Steps to study your Kundali / Birth Chart for Career Analysis

Now, we are finally going to talk about the steps you need to find the right career.

  1. Check the strength of your ascendant house. Here, you need to check the house first and not its lord. See how many planets sit or aspect the house.
  2. Check the ascendant lord. What is its strength? Is it placed in a good or bad sign? How many planets aspect it? If your ascendant house and lord are strong, then we look further to find a suitable job or business for you. If it's weak, then we look for a job.
  3. As I told you before. For the job, check the 2nd, 6th, 10th, and 11th houses. For business, check the 2nd, 7th, 9th, and 11th houses.
  4. Check the strength of the Sun and Moon. If the Sun is strong, a job is recommended. If the Moon is strong, you can go for business. In some ascendents, Moon is functional malefic, here we check the strength of Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter for business prospects. If Sun is functional malefic, then we look at the strength of Saturn, Mars, Venus, and Jupiter for job prospects.
  5. For business, you need to have either Venus, Mercury, Moon, or Jupiter in your 4th or 10th house. If Jupiter aspects the 10th house from its 5th or 9th aspect, then you can surely try for business.
  6. Check the strength of the 10th house and its lord. Its strength will determine what type of field you can opt for.
  7. After finding out the houses and planets that affect your job or business prospects. Check the Nakshatras in which the planets sit in. Check the Nakshatra pada/quarter in which these planets sit. For example, you are a Sagittarius ascendant and Mercury sits in your 10th house. Here it is in its own sign of exaltation (Virgo) and is making a Bhadra Yoga, the most auspicious yoga for business. Then we look closer and discover Mercury is sitting in Hasta nakshatra pada 1 which falls in the Aries sign. This Nakshatra is ruled by Moon. Now, we need to check the strength of the Moon. If it's strong, the person can go into any sort of business, otherwise, a job is recommended.
  8. You also need to check the condition of your Atmakaraka and Amatyakaraka in your birth chart. If they both are strong, you can go into the field signified by either of them.
  9. Next, you check your D-9 and D-10 charts using a similar process. If the planets are equally or more powerful in your D-9, then you will have a flourishing career and can go for multiple jobs or businesses. In D-10 chart, you need to check the condition of its ascendant house and lord, 10th house and lord, and Amatyakaraka

Conclusion

Figuring out the right career is a delicate process. I have presented the method in the simplest manner possible.

While there are plenty of astrologers available to help you analyze your birth chart. I personally recommend you to analyze your birth chart all by yourself at least once using online resources. This will help you know yourself better.
