How to connect and wake up your sweet drum…

Below are some suggestions for growing your spiritual relationship with your new sacred drum. Ceremony is sacred intent within the present moment—to let go of the ‘head’ stuff. Choose to come stand within your own power directly from your heart. There is no right or wrong way for ceremony. I suggest to offer this enlivening ceremony when your schedule allows soon after your drum is birthed or your new drum is with you—whenever the time is right and spirit nudges you.

Pick a special time where you can be alone with your new ‘baby’ drum—out in nature is best and most potent—where you won’t be disturbed or distracted. Being outside offers so much because you can engage with the elements and the spirits more easily. When we ask and engage first, our helpers and guides will be there for us as they are patiently waiting for us. Engaging out in nature also allows our spirit body to relax and expand to naturally and fully connect.

Open sacred space by calling in and acknowledging the sacred elements/directions—East (air), South (fire), West (water), North (earth), Upper World (father sun, grandmother moon, sweet Spirit) and last, our blessed Mother Earth and all her beings—those that walk on four legs, those that creep and crawl, swim and fly. You can speak them or sing them (for ceremony times after your dear drum has been awakened, you can use the sacred sound of your drum to call in the cardinal directions!)

After opening, take some time to ground and connect to Mother Earth and also to Father Sky—-join these special energies together at your heart or how you are called/guided.

Connect with a beautiful tree…

If you are outside—go and connect with a Standing One (tree) that calls you—go and sit facing this grand tree and mindfully connect heart-to-heart. Offer prayers of thanks and gratitude for the spirit of the wooden frame and also the spirit of the hide of your drum. Then, listen for a message or gift back in return. This can be a time to humbly ask for the spirit name of your drum perhaps ... Take time with this…listen and be still... go with what comes... engage with all your senses and listen deeply.

When you feel complete, give thanks to the sacred tree—return to your circle space and while standing—hold up your drum to earth and sky and dedicate your dear drum right out loud—go with what comes from your heart. Again, listen for spirit messages to come back as a gift for you and your sweet drum.

After you feel complete—now, mindfully begin to wake your drum up by playing a soft heart pulse/beat or… what you are guided to play—choose to be in your Joy and Celebrate! Be aware of your thoughts and feelings while you play—remembering that the sacred drum will send out those thoughts/feelings (resonance of you) out into the world… then, to return back to you. Feel free to dance and celebrate—sing and chant and call for your own spirit song. Do this for as long as you feel called and feels right. If the sacred tree or your meditation offered a name for your drum—call it out for the spirits to hear and to honour your dear drum. Trust your intuition and what may come—often, those first ‘hits’ you receive are those gifts/messages from Spirit.

When you feel complete—sit or stand and be still to connect deep with the vibrations that will linger after your playing/celebration. This is a good time to meditate and to offer any prayers that come and offer thanks for the gift of the sacred drum. Deepen your connection with your drum—call your dear drum by name, if you received one—give thanks for your life. This is also a good time to feel your feet grounded on the Mother—stamp your feet on the ground or clap your hands—come fully back to this middle world and connect with Her, our Mother. Know your dear drum is Her sacred voice!

When you feel complete—close and say goodbye by honouring the directions in either order you feel called. End by honouring our blessed earth Mother and all her children including your brand new sacred drum—offering gratitude and thanks.

Leave no trace that you have been where you have been—perhaps offer a stone, a flower or a strand of your hair, as a gift for the gift(s) you have received.

You may wish to have a drum bag—to protect your spirit drum…

You can create/sew your own drum bag or…

You can also check out online resources (google "frame drum bag/case") and you can also check your local music store that sells drums and drum-kits—they will probably stock 'cymbal' bags—and they can come in different sizes and shapes… they work well as a good drum bag—just give them a call to see what they have in stock re sizes, etc.

Other places to check out are your local First Nation Friendship Centres or at local pow-wows during the summer—it’s good medicine to support local Indigenous business and craft.

Enjoy your new sweet drum!

much love and gratitude,
