Essential oils can be used in several ways to empower your magic directly or to prepare yourself, your tools and other items for magical work. It is important to choose genuine essential oils rather than fragrance oils as the latter do not contain the same natural properties and benefits. This is because they are not pure extracts and may not actually contain the ingredient for which they are named at all.

Each oil is packed full of power and beneficial properties that have come from the plant, herb, seed or other item that it was originally sourced from. These can be used to aid you intent when performing spells or rituals or even alone for matters such as protection or good luck. Oils can also be blended together to combine their properties. These blends and single oils can also be used to anoint yourself, your tools and other items that you use such as candles.

Preparing Essential Oils for Use

Before using essential oils can be cleansed and charged with your intent and energy. This can be done by sitting with the oil and focusing on what you wish to achieve in using it. Visualise this energy travelling into and mixing with the oil. If you wish you can also visualise your intent coming true. You can hold the bottle of oil simply in your hands or some people chose to hold it up to their third eye as they believe this is more effective.

If you wish to charge your oils with certain powers outside of yourself: for example the energy of the moon, you can leave the oil where the light of the moon will fall on it and then store it in a dark place to preserve this energy. For charging oils with water energy you could hold the bottle under running water or in the waves of the sea or perhaps sit them in a shallow stream if you have one nearby. Care should be taken with essential oils and sunlight. All oils should be stored in a cool place out of sunlight as over time exposure to sunlight can deteriorate the oils quality and properties. If you wish to charge your oil with the energy of the sun, do so with only the amount you are going to use at the time and for a short time.

Using essential Oils on the Body

Before using an essential oil on any area of your body they should be diluted using base oil. They can also be added to a plain unscented cream or lotion. Many oils are suitable for use and include almond, avocado, grape seed, hazelnut, sesame and walnut oils. In the case of creams and lotions it is fine to use a bought one but try to choose one that contains natural ingredients rather than something highly synthetic. Small amounts of essential oils can then be added to these bases and used to anoint your body. If you are working in healing you can also create and use these infused creams, lotions and oils in a variety of helpful ways. Oils can be used in massage and cream could be applied to dry skin or aching muscles for example.

Using Essential Oils for Anointing

Once mixed with a base oil or cream, essential oils can be used within magic and rituals to anoint the body. When using oils in this way it is important to be clear about your intent and what you wish to take place.

Anointing is not just a matter of putting the oil onto your body and can be performed as a rite in itself if you wish. The process could also be incorporated into the beginning of the spell or ritual you are going to perform. Certain areas of the body are more receptive to the application of anointing oils and these are where the oil should be placed. For general use the insides of your wrists, temple and third eye can be used and if you have a specific relevant intent in mind, the corresponding chakra point can also be used. Only a small drop of oil is needed and using more will not make your practice more successful. In fact excess oils may cause problems if they drip into your eyes or on to clothes and other surfaces.

Oils can also be used to anoint candles that are to be used in spells or as part of rituals. Candles are a useful tool in helping to keep focus and are also believed by many to help carry your intent on its way as the smoke travels upwards. Anointing the candle can be anointed before you begin you magical work or can be done during this. Hold the candle in front of you and while visualising your intent, place a drop or two (depending on candle size) of oil onto the centre of the candle. Continue to keep your intent clearly in mind and spread the oil over the candle. The candle is now ready to use for your intended purpose.

Other items such as talismans, lucky charms or items used for protection can also be anointed with oils in the same way. Your intent should always be kept clearly in mind while anointing an item and if it is not to be used immediately or is a gift for someone else, the item should be stored safely wrapped in soft cloth or paper.

If you are able to make your own candles, essential oils can also be added to the wax to create candles specific to your wishes. By using the correct essential oils, colours and perhaps other correspondences very powerful magical candles can be created.

Using an Oil Burner in Magic

Essential oils can be burned during spell casting and other magical work using an oil burner. These can be found in many shops and even some larger supermarkets and are simple to use. The most suitable burners are those that have a fair sized ‘well’ at the top. Water is placed into this well and then warmed by placing a lit tea light candle in the section underneath. Once the water is warm a few drops of the desired oil is added. As the candle burns and heats the water the scent of the oil is released and travels into the surrounding environment.

Burning oils can be used to add the properties and correspondences of the oil to your work, to create a specific atmosphere or as an aid to your focus. As you add the oil and as it releases into the air visualise the vapours reaching out and aiding your intent and desired outcome in becoming real.

They sound really great. I know what you mean about not wearing strong energies against your skin. I had a similar experience with Moldavite and had to stop wearing it. I would be interested in hearing about your experiences with the oil blends you mentioned.

Maurice Glaude from Mobile on May 04, 2017:

I mostly use pure essential oils, but I've recently purchased some oil blends by whom I believe to be master teachers, a Lotus blossom blend and one called Showers of Gold... Instantly I felt a strong power from them and I usually have to get adjusted to the energy when I decide to use them on my crystals or jewelry. Because the energy is so strong I don't often choose to wear it directly on my skin.
