How Would Jesus “Mask?”

Maren writes in many genres and tries to survive and stay sane ALL the time, but especially during world crises such as viral pandemics.

Jesus was no dumb bunny. (Neither were Mohammed, Buddha, Lakshmi, Eltheldreda, Hestia, et al.) While in human form, we can put our money on His having been a caring, considerate member of society. So, if He were to be on earth during a rampant viral epidemic with health experts giving sound advice, would He have changed His behavior?

Move over, “WWJD.”

Today’s question is HWJM (How Would Jesus Mask?)

Jesus as a Human

Being God incarnated into a body is probably not the easiest gig.

You’re omniscient, but you’re simultaneously a human. I can’t imagine how He balanced out that yin/yang. Every historical record indicates His human intelligence was not below average. So, the scenario we’ve got is an eternal omni-compassionate dude with average (or higher) smarts hearing that a dangerous, highly contagious germ is spreading like crazy from respiratory emissions.

What would Jesus do in this situation?

One thing for sure is that the Lord God Almighty’s Holy Son would not be walking around letting His exhalations get on other people. No way.

He was not an inconsiderate jerk who would whine about His looks with a mask, or fuss about how wearing a face mask feels too hot or too weird. No. He and Mama Mary wouldn’t even think about becoming the cause of someone else’s getting the disease.

They followed the laws of Judaism which included many hygiene practices to maintain the health of their own bodies, and the health of their family and their community. If a COVID-19 sort of threat raced through their world, Jesus and Mary absolutely, positively would have followed instructions to prevent being carriers and spreaders of a deadly epidemic.

Also for Certain

Since Jesus Christ was fine-to-superior in the intelligence department, He would understand that exhalation droplets come from both

  1. Your nose, and
  2. Your mouth.

So, He’d be totally down with knowing that both those body parts must be covered when He was near others.

He also knew that humans don’t breathe through gills. Thus, wearing a face mask on the neck under the chin, the big J.C. would know, is stupid and dangerous to others.

A Quiz

How would Jesus mask (the word “mask” being used as a verb)? Observe the following pictures and choose which one would be Lord Jesus if He were one of us right now:

This is like wearing a condom on your elbow.

That exposed nose is deadly.

World medical experts say a mask covering the nose and mouth protects others near you.

If you chose picture C, you are correct.

"Love one another" means doing the right thing, nothing less.

@Linda Crampton, thanks for your comments. I think that some of our fellow citizens do not understand that they are asked to wear a mask to protect others. The mask I wear doesn't really protect ME (too much); it stops my droplets from reaching others. And, yes, some of our home-made masks get hot, sweaty, and inconvenient -- but in the grand scheme of things, it is such a MINOR discomfort compared to the prevention of harm it seeks to accomplish.

I'm sure Jesus would wear a mask correctly. Thank you for creating an article that is amusing but also contains some important points to think about during this difficult time.

Well I figure you are right. I just think of Him as always in me. I have a problem with ever putting distance between me and Jesus.

Maren Elizabeth Morgan (author) from Pennsylvania on May 29, 2020:

@Eric Dierker, I do see him keeping 6 feet away and doing Zoom sermons. For healing touch, I see him garbing up like a brave essential health care provider.

Very interesting. My only problem is that I do not see him social distancing.

@manatita44: thanks for the reaction. It boggles my mind that spiritual leaders aren't educating their flocks about loving their neighbor through keeping their germs to themselves. Please share my hub article with all who you think might enjoy reading it. Blessings on you.

You show a great understanding - at least here - of spiritual philosophy. Keep running inward ... upward ... forward!

You are also funny in parts and I admire your subtle messages.

I am part of a very large group of spiritual souls internationally. My mentor has passed but we have about 50 statues of him around the world. One made headlines when they had a flood in a particular country in Europe.

The river overflowed and covered the statue, but left the folded arms and face to show. Now someone has put a mask on its face. Chuckle.
