How to Tell If a Psychic or Fortune Teller Is Genuine
Psychic Readings
There are many psychic reading sites on the internet these days, and throughout the country you will find loads of weekend flea markets or sales that always have a psychic in residence. With so many clairvoyant, medium or psychic painters selling their wares, how do we know which are genuine and which ones are con artists?
In my town we often have psychic fairs, and I have visited them loads of times—mainly to buy my tarot cards or pick out a piece of silver jewellery that catches my eye.
Upon browsing around, I see loads of different readings—from tarot cards and runes, to ghostly psychic drawings that tell you that the person the psychic has drawn for you, is actually your great great grandmother. The point is, they all look so genuine.
And before I go on, I would like to add that I believe most of them really believe that their Gift is actually true. I doubt very much that someone would take up this profession without actually having some sort of psychic experience. What I do believe is that they think they can do the cards or speak to great aunt Elsie who lived years ago. But how do we know which one to pick?
Psychology, Suggestion, Manipulation
I have been reading the tarot cards ever since I was 16 years old. My whole life before that consisted of loads of different psychic happenings that got me interested in why and how this sort of thing happened.
It was a natural progression that made me want to try and help people by reading the tarot cards. Before I go on, I would like to add that I have studied psychology for over four years, and I could have taken the last course and become a councillor.
So I am fully aware of the fact that a lot of psychic readings are nothing more than being able to ‘see’ what the person is like, read how they react, and be aware of the fact that they actually want to believe you, because they are paying you, and of course they want the excitement.
Therefore they are very open to suggestion and can easily be manipulated into revealing information and then afterwards, thinking that actually they believe the psychic is the one that told them this info.
Signs of Fraud
First of all, let’s address the fraud. This is blatantly a way to get as much money out of you as possible. They know they are fraudsters; all they want to do is manipulate you and convince you that they are telling the truth.
Here's what you can do first: let's say you're walking around a psychic fair, for example—go and stand just outside of personal range, as I call it, but make sure you can hear, see, and get the impression of what is true and what’s not.
Not only will this tell you what’s going on, but you will be able to see whether the psychic starts to look uncomfortable, giving you sidelong glances and fidgeting for example. I have seen this a number of times, and it’s a great giveaway.
Second, see how many times they repeat themselves. For example, do they ask for background info, and then throw it back at the recipient later in the conversation? By taking this initiative, it will be obvious that they are ‘fishing’ for information.
By playing on the same words and conversation, they are actually trying to make you remember the phrase or word that they have got right. They read people—it's as simple as that. Also a real psychic will not charge you too much money. Always go for the cheaper option, because the more expensive ones mean they have been doing this for years.
Watch the psychic's face for a little smile or a sign of triumph. It's not hard to see. Count how many times they get something right, compared to what is wrong.
And don't forget to listen into conversations after the recipient has left. Many frauds like to boast to someone that the reading has gone really well, and 'I am such a good reader,' etc.
Fooling Themselves
A psychic who believes that they are genuine will act with enthusiasm, treating the recipient with respect and smiling a lot. He or she will be so pleased with themselves when they get the answers right, that they tend to give themselves away by this action.
It's as though they are guessing, and when it is clear they are spot on, will smile and preen. But what in fact they are doing is reading the person. It's not hard.
For example, let's say the person getting the reading is a teenage girl. It's obvious that the psychic will automatically start talking about boyfriends and school, or meeting a talk dark stranger at a nightclub! Bit of a giveaway!
They will look all innocent and in fact believe that they have nothing to hide. But in fact they are just getting into the zone of the participant. Even a teenage girl will have other problems, so this is a great giveaway.
The Real McCoy Genuine Psychics
A real genuine psychic will stand out a mile, if you know what to look for. He or she will only look at the tarot cards or the palm of your hand when doing palm reading. He/she will be concentrating so much on what they can see before them, they will not even take a look at the participant. Their concentration will be purely on the reading.
Listen in, and you will see that they talk about all sorts of family life, court cases, illnesses that can be proven by the participant, and things that have genuinely happened in the past. And more importantly, they will admit their mistake if they read it wrong.
If they are doing a future reading, and the participant totally disagrees, instead of trying to rectify their mistake, the reader will turn and say something along the lines of, ‘Well, this is what I can see. It may seem strange to you now, but I see this in your future whether you believe it or not’.
In other words, they won’t care if it sounds ‘out there’ or strange, they say what they see. Simple as that. A real genuine psychic will also give you a written or taped text of the conversation. They won’t be afraid of any comebacks because they believe in what they are saying.
Once the participant has gotten over the initial suspicion, they will see that everything they have been told Is in fact true, or as near to the truth as can be. Even if the reading turns out to be completely wrong, they will still appreciate the fact that they psychic tried their best and didn't try to lie to them.
How to Act When Sitting for a Reading
You are paying a lot of money for your tarot or card reading. So do not give them any information. Never ever tell them anything about your past, where you live, or how old you are. But the most important thing is to stay blank. Literally.
Sit comfortably in your chair, do not smile, move around or do anything that will let the psychic read you. Even a small thing such as scratching your nose will actually give off signals that they can read. Body language is a very easy thing to pick up on.
And when they get something completely right, just nod and say 'yes' or 'no' to whether you understand what they mean. This way, you will be able to pick out the genuine from the fraud. All con artists use this ploy. You will totally stump them by keeping still, having a blank expression, and never, ever giving them information that they can work on. This is when they will show their true colors.
And the most important thing is to keep an open mind.
I have been doing readings for years. If I get it wrong, I hold my hands up. I also tell them before I start that I read the tarot cards with a dash of psychology to help them with a problem.
If they ask me where the information comes from, I just hold my hands up and admit that I have no idea. I explain that it could either be a power from ‘beyond’ or a part of my brain that somehow picks up signals from the participant, even future readings, or something that scientists do no know yet.
And most important: The participants keep coming back. Because I tell the truth about my ‘powers’. Trust the participant, and most importantly they will trust you.
Have a great time with your psychic reading, and most importantly, never ever take it too seriously. Nobody knows the future; it is down to you. We are just there to help you see the choices that you can make.
Good luck!
Did You Know?
The tarot, first known as trionfi then later tarocchi, was mainly played by the French and the Italians. The cards were first used in Europe in the mid-15th century. To start with, they were used as a pack of playing cards.
But from the 18th century, tarot cards have been used by mystics and occultists to tell fortunes. Even though the word 'tarot' is taken from the Italian word tarocchi, it actually doesn't mean anything, but some say that it comes from the Taro river in northern Italy, near Palma.
More mysteriously, another idea is that it comes from the Arabic word turuq, which means 'four pathways'.
But maybe there is an even darker side to the tarot. Some question whether it is related to the words Harut and Marut, who were mentioned in a short sentence in the Qu'ran. According to the account, a group of Israelites learned magic, because Two Angels, Harut and Marut, wanted them to demonstrate it for them. But in reality, the two Angels wanted to test their will power. It was told that this magic would be passed on to others by the Devil.

How can I become a psychic? I've always been interested in the supernatural and have felt a strange connection to 'magic'. I've always felt like it was something I just need in my life, but I've never been able to get any help from the web. Also, I'm pretty young and my parents don't approve of supernatural and stuff and don't believe.

Hi, Nell,
Another great article. I've always felt comfortable dealing with these people, even before I became reacquainted with Christ. I may still attend spiritual expos in my area. Why?
Having worked in the counseling field over my life, I do believe there are genuine "empaths." I also know there are people known as "sensitives." I've encountered quite a few in my life. These people can read a person's emotional state and may give some guidance.
I also think that there are people who can help in other ways spiritually. Everybody doesn't have the same spiritual abilities; even fewer seek to develop any spiritual abilities. that's a fact. But even biblical texts recognize we all have spiritual gifts, but we are cautioned about using them without proper spiritual guidance or training.
One thing I discovered from being a regular at one spiritual expo is that the psychic participants "cleanse" the area with a "white light" ritual before they start. They told me that if anyone was a fraud that they specifically rejected him/her from their group
I noticed over time, that only those reliable and legitimate members of this group would participate. They did their own policing." That's why everyone I saw who went to this expo would come away smiling or pleased that they had spent the day there.
I remember attending my first expo. I walked with my friend, Veronica, to a table. The lady, a Native American elder said: "Well, young lady, you should go teach in Spain, and young man, you are a bit of a skeptic. But didn't your dad tell you to listen carefully when you run across an elder from tribal blood? Your counseling background does you know good here. Now, do you two want a reading?"
We had just set foot in the place, Nell. We sat down and listened intently. There was no way she could have known the first thing about us. In fact, we agreed not to speak until we made contact with some of the psychic participants.
Your article provides good guidance for people trying to distinguish the fraud from the real thing. You are doing really important work, Nell, because most people are looking for something they can trust, someone they can believe, and someway of determining what is safe.
Excellent article.
Much respect and admiration,
Tim

Nell.....No idea how I have passed by this hub for so long, unless I must blame it on my less time spent on our site. Well, I'm here now, girlfriend!
I can appreciate a thorough, quality Horoscope analysis by a learned Astrologist, but that's pretty much as far as I can go.
As for psychics/mediums, my firm belief is that they're "Genuine Entertainers," at best. Do I have even a faint belief they communicate with those passed on? NO. Some are better actors than others....can pull off some outstanding guesses and that's about it. All it takes to make believers out of most people is one or 2 remotely credible comments that might make them feel good or give them some hope about something. That's it...Period, the end.
Living human beings simply cannot and do not HEAR deceased souls whispering, muttering or releasing messages to pass on to us.
It is our fervent, desperate DESIRES for that to be true. What convinces us of psychics & mediums is our strong emotions of those desires.....certainly not our intellect nor common sense.
As always.....I LOVE your articles. Peace, Paula

In your reply to Lailapop you said " I do not read the minor arcana." Can you explain why not? Also while I am asking questions I have another I hope you wont mind answering as well. My question is do you use any other decks? if so what and why? If not why not? Thank you for sharing your wisdom.

Hi Jennifer, is your heart broken? if only some of the stuff is right then she sounds like a good guesser! as for aura cleansing, I do not believe in it! I may be wrong, but if it is real then surely with you doing meditation and mental cleansing by listening to a cd or dvd it will have the same effect. I am always skeptical of these claims, but as I say I might be wrong, but its not something you can't do yourself is it? 300 pounds/dollars is far too much! maybe 20 p/d a session. Good luck.
Jennifer on August 17, 2017:
Hi Nell,
I went to a psychic and during the reading she kept saying your heart is broken and once it is shattered, you can't get it back. I feel like some of the stuff was right on, but then she ended with doing aura cleansing by breaking the bond with my ex and also letting mr creativity come out. She wants 300 for fiv cleansing sessions. Does this even exist? She didn't back down when I questioned one thing and did say that is what I see. Please help, not sure if I should do the cleansing. I am not sure it is even real

Please do NOT go to VICKY ANTOINETTE (currently in Mallow) do not waste your money. She is a complete charlatan. I paid 70 euro to see her yesterday. She spent about 80% of the time telling me that my partner was no good for me and to leave him. Then said a man from work will start texting you but he has a girlfriend so I'd encourage you to have a fling with him coz you deserve a little fun. She told me to dump the guy I'm with now and have fun with the other fella, until I get bored. The truth is I AM SINGLE.. there is NO men in my life(I work from home so there's no "guy from work") and unlike her I DO have a moral compass so would NEVER entertain any guy that was already in a relationship. She had to leave Cork city as a disgruntled customer (she told me it was a man so I'm assuming maybe one of the husbands that was abandoned by their wives under her advice). He broke her face and she ended up out of work and having to flee to Mallow. Karma catches up on everyone, even unscrupulous thieving Charlatan's such as herself. The thing is I do Angel cards myself and read palms (I don't charge money, just do it for free to anyone that asks me)so I could tell immediately that she was a fake. Not 1 bit of accuracy from her at all. She cried during our reading as she thought I'd cry too, I didn't. It just sent alarms ringing (FAKE!) and she kept insisting on hugging me, her way of trying to fake a bond so you'd pay her. The hugging felt SO forced and made me so uncomfortable. I gave her the 70 and left because I thought if you're that desperate for my money you can have it. I feel physically ill thinking about all of the relationships she must have broken up just out of her own greed. Lets be honest, relationships are difficult, this charlatan knows most people argue with their spouses/ partners so people are already vulnerable to being in a position to be told to leave their partner. I hope Karma puts a stop to this evil woman. She's an abomination. (BUYER BEWARE!! Save your Money, VICKY ANTOINETTE is a FAKE!)

Hi Riley, I get the feeling that a lot of her trouble is psychology. For some reason she feels guilty for taking money, yet she wants to do the readings. A part of her mind is yelling, 'Are you faking it? Is this real? What she needs to do is sit down and give it a rest for a while, sort out her health, and most important don't do readings just for the money. For two reasons. one you are so desperate for the money you may read the palms wrong, and secondly she will feel guilty and then ill. round and round we go! to read palms, tarot etc you have to be relaxed. concentrate on the person what you are feeling etc, and never feel guilty for being paid! why should she do it for nothing? me confident and say 10 dollars/pounds and then as she gets more experienced put the money up! tell her good luck!
Riley McHale on May 09, 2017:
Hello! I have a best friend who do fortune telling. She just noticed it when she read her cousin's palm when she's teen, she saw death but just kept it to herself because she didn't believe in what she saw. A month after, her counsin died.
She continued reading without asking anything in return and it seems like she's getting bad luck after palm reading. The bad luck involves money and health, she said she hasn't accept this ability yet. If fortune telling is bad luck, what does she needs to do? Does she needs to accept that she has that ability, does she need to get something in return from her participants?

Nell Rose (author) from Buckinghamshire UK on December 05, 2016:
Hi Holly, not sure to be honest. You have to take into consideration whether the other two members of the family really believed her, or in fact wanted to believe. there is a lot of psychology involved. a lot of people will believe because its fun, they only hear what they want, and latch onto the good stuff. If you felt that it was wrong then it was wrong. the best thing to do is either tape the conversation or take notes. this way you can figure out whether they were worth going to. of course psychics can never be completely right, some things just feel one way when it may turn out the other. and of course the recipient, you in this case, may not realise that she is explaining about something that may happen that you can't even think to believe is possible. but you never know, it may be! your best bet is to sit back and see what happens. if her words don't come true, or its far off the mark, then write down her name, and remember to never go there again, okay? thanks for reading, nell
Holly on December 04, 2016:
Hi,
I was at an event today and two members of my family had a reading that was spot on so i went later on with my sister. Whilst waiting we didn't say anything about ourselves as I wanted a proper reading. During the reading however, she did ask a few questions e.g age and career goals. Some information she gave me was completely off mark. Do you think that this was a genuine psychic?
