A Real Question With a Real Answer.
Hell is a Physical Place Within the Earth.
The sons of Korah and the nation of Israel became painfully aware that hell is a place prepared for the wicked. Numbers 16:30-35 relates the incident concerning Korah’s challenge before Moses and God that the priesthood should not solely belong to the line of Aaron. The earth opened up and swallowed all who sided with Korah “... alive into the pit.” Fear consumed the Israelite camp and order was restored. Moral of the story: do not question the election of God; His purposes will stand forever.
The Greek uses the term Hades for the place of the dead for both the wicked and righteous. Luke 16:19-31 relates Christ’s actual account of a conversation between Abraham in the paradise portion of Hades and the rich man abiding in hell. For a period of time, there was a faint glow from paradise into the darkness of hell with a great gulf between them which could never be traversed. The rich man recognized Lazarus and acknowledged Abraham. He desired some relief from his torment, which would never come but desired that his five brothers be warned of the hell he was suffering. Abraham’s answer was not comforting: if they hear not Moses and the prophets they will not hear the One who will rise from the dead.
When Christ died upon the cross we learn from 1 Peter 3:19 that He went to paradise and preached to those who have been waiting for the Messiah from Abel to the thief on the cross. Ephesians 4:8-11 tells us that Christ not only preached but that He descended below what we call the earth and took captivity captive. Paradise is no longer earthbound but resides in the presence of the glorified Christ. The light went out in Hades and hell was left in total darkness until the White Throne judgment at the end of the millennium.
Living in a World Light with Only a Door That Leads to Darkness for the Wicked.
The Word Has More to Say About the Darkness Than Fire.
Darkness in the Old Testament
- Exodus 20:21-22 - the first judgment of darkness was for only three days but was so oppressive it could be felt.
- 1 Samuel 2:9 - God will keep His own, but the wicked shall be silent in darkness.
- Proverbs 20:20 - the judgment of those who are a curse to their father or mother shall find silence and utter darkness.
- The judgment of Babylon and wicked nations shall be silence and darkness. Isaiah 47:5
- Jeremiah 13:16 - give glory to God before He turns you over to gross darkness.
- Amos 5:18 - the day of the Lord is darkness and not light.
Darkness in the New Testament
The words of Jesus:
- Darkness is more than a fitting judgment because men love darkness; the darkness that is coming is the blackness of their wickedness in real time. John 3:19
- Matthew 8:12 - faithless Israel shall be turned to an outer and painful darkness where there be shall weeping and gnashing of teeth.
- Unprofitable servants, the religious but not saved crowd, shall find the same painful darkness. Matthew 25:30
- The wedding supper of the Lord found in Matthew 22:1-14: false believers shall be cast into the outer and very painful darkness.
Per 2 Peter 2:4 - Angels that sinned were cast down into hell [the place] and delivered them into chains of darkness. Not only is this darkness painful but is very restrictive. As the foolish think that they will at least be with their friends; not realizing that hell will not allow any meaningful interaction with others. Jude 6 adds ‘everlasting chains’ meaning there will never be any relief for as the old saying goes: they will go from the frying pan and join all the wicked in the Lake of Fire.
Those who espouse heresy have a reservation have a permanent reservation for the darkness of hell. 2 Peter 2:12-17 calls this darkness a shroud of darkness intimating being suffocated as Jude 13 states … forever. ‘ … and their damnation slumbereth not. 2 Peter 2:3
Visions Are All Similar, Fire but Never Darkness
What to Make of Those Who Profess Going to Hell and Returning.
It is simply foolishness at best or people seeking notoriety and book sales. Whether it was a dream brought on by weak, overly zealous poor teaching or a late night movie; it was not from God. Our sinful flesh can create enough of its own nightmares without the devil's help. When people abuse their bodies and minds with pornography, alcohol, drugs, bad company and a hatred for anything godly; everything is fair game when it comes to nightmares. Just look at how varied and perverse the movies are in our day and age. So many are brilliantly written but very strange at the same time. Every person here has had their bouts with personal dreams they would love to forget but the flesh loves reruns.
In conclusion, I do not discount what a person might have seen in a vision but it was based solely upon his own mindset, his interpretation of facts and perceived ideas from myriads of sources both physical and philosophical. Just get a group of people together and have them give you their ideas concerning hell; they will all be different; except for one fact - darkness. Deception comes into play when one wants to present that which is not purely biblical as being valid. In the first place, it should be questioned if someone is making money and secondly whether or not it brings glory to God.
David Campbell (author) from Winlock, Washington on March 05, 2021:
I have never heard anyone ever teach or preach on the eternal darkness that will consume the wicked.
Alan on March 04, 2021:
It all makes perfect sense, God Is Light and in heaven there will be no need for the Sun for he is the light thereof.
Hell is the total opposite of Heaven, and TOTAL darkness is the absolute absence of light.
Very good article Mr. Campbell Is Hell Real /Just As Real As Heaven.
