Is it you?

Psalm 91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. All the rest of this chapter is dependant on this first verse. Break it down and you will know if you qualify for the blessing of His protection. The chapter begins with the word "He" which references a man or a woman. It does not mean that only males can obtain His protection. The New Century Bible says Those who go to God Most High for safety, or in other words anyone who seeks Him. To cross reference this with the New Testament, John 14:6 tells us: Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Philippians 2:9 NIV says: Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name. Acts 4:12 reveals: Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Putting all of this together, the only way anyone can go to the Most High is first accepting His Son, based on scripture. We qualify to seek Him as new covenant believers by believing that Christ died for our sins and will return for us.

Dwelling place

Dwelling place

Are you dwelling in His secret place?

Now we know the He, indicates those who believe in salvation through Jesus we come to the next part which is: who dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High. A secret is something that is hidden, and not known or revealed to others. This would suggest that His secret place is not a specific physical location such as a church building because everything that is done in the church is public. The secret place is communing with Him in private which can certainly take place in a church or any other locale. When you live a lifestyle of prayer, fasting, and reading His word, you open your spirit for Him to talk to you. It may be when you sit alone on a beach or go away to a cabin, but it can also happen in your vehicle or when you are at the dinner table with 7 other people. The secret place can be when you shut out the world and worship in private. Jesus said in Matthew 6 that we should pray, give, and fast privately. He says to shut the door of your inner room and His Father will reward in public what you do in secret. Just remember He is a spirit and is everywhere. He might speak secret things to you through revelation while you are reading a book or watching a television show. The secret place is your personal walk with HIm where you develop a spiritual relationship and learn to hear His voice. To dwell, means to live or reside which indicates that you spend much time alone with Him. Your dwelling place is where you hang out most of the time and the location where you are likely to be found.

Abiding under His shadow

So, to breakdown Psalm 91:1 in layman's terms for New Covenant believers it means this: Anyone who spends a lot of time in secret with the Most High, through a relationship with Jesus Christ His Son, through the Holy Spirit will be guaranteed the shadow of His protection. This is when the rest of the chapter becomes a reality. Remember that when this was written, Christ had not come so we today must look at this from the standpoint of the New Testament. In John 14:26 Jesus told His disciples that He would leave them a Comforter after He went to heaven. The Holy Spirit can come upon us when we are worshipping in our homes, our vehicles, or in a corporate worship service. You can be in a crowd of people yet communing one on one with the Lord in private worship and conversation, Dwelling in His secret place is becoming the church and allowing your light to shine for others. When you draw near to Him, He will draw near to you and reveal more aspects of Himself. His glory will surround you and His protection will shadow you. The secret, hidden, place is when your feet are firmly planted on this earth, but your spirit is soaring as if you are in His very presence In Luke 1:35 Gabriel said to Mary: And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee: wherefore also the holy thing which is begotten shall be called the Son of God. We need the Holy Spirit that has been sent by Jesus to fill us and the power of the Most High to overshadow us so we can do what He has called us to. To overshadow means to tower above, to cover or consume. What can be better than having His covering?

This is a very good article, Cheryl. The 91sy Psalm is my favorite. I was in a very difficulty about 25 years ago and I read this Psalm several times ago along with my prayers. Of course, things did get better, but your article reaminds of the stregth we get from the Bible. I really enjoyed this article.
