The Battle

Before I get to the story, I will share some background information so readers will understand what is taking place. During the summer of 1864, there was a Civil War Battle in Virginia that stretched about 50 miles from Lynchburg to Salem. David Hunter, the Union General advanced upon the railroad hub in Lynchburg, but after a few hours, turned away from the heavy fighting. He was short on ammunition and overwhelmed because of the arrival of Confederate reinforcements. Outnumbered by Jubal Early and his men Hunter retreated and made an important decision. Rather than risk a withdrawal back down the Shenandoah Valley, he chose to travel west, across the Blue Ridge Mountains into West Virginia. On the morning of June 21, 1864, the Union soldiers were moving through Hanging Rock, near Salem, Virginia when Brigadier General John McCausland attacked the rear guard of the Union forces The Confederate army captured ten guns and numerous other supplies, and the Union suffered the loss of about thirty men. Hanging Rock was the last engagement between these two armies under David Hunter and Jubal Early. Somewhere along the way just a few miles east, some of these soldiers must have traveled through Green Hill Park as this will be the basis for the story you are about to read.

Confirmation

It only takes about 14 minutes to travel from Green Hill Park to Hanging Rock, so it's probable that the Confederate soldiers were in this area during that Battle. I checked the records department at Green Hill Park but could not get any official verification. Neither did I obtain a confirmation that anyone else had a supernatural encounter there. Even so, I share this story that my daughter told me close to 20 years ago. I have no reason to doubt her as both she and her former husband told the same tale. There have been numerous television programs about areas in Virginia where people say they have seen the "ghosts" of confederate soldiers and battle being reenacted. There are also many locations in this state where Civil War ghosts have been seen, even to this very day. Decades ago a pastor's wife told the church members that this is called the residual effect of something that has already taken place. This seems to be confirmed by the many people who say the soldiers do not interact with them but go on with their mission.

The sighting and the sound

My daughter was about 18 or 19 when this happened because it was prior to her getting married in 2005. She and her fiance had decided to take a walk on one of the trails in Green Hill Park. She said they had not gotten too far away from where the vehicle was parked when she heard the sound of horses hooves, galloping loud and fast towards them. She said it startled her and she thought perhaps there was some type of actual reenactment of a Civil War battle but she never saw anything. At that same moment, her fiance grabbed her arm and said they needed to get back to the car right away. Once safely inside the vehicle, he told her that he had seen apparitions of Confederate soldiers on horses, riding past them on the trail. He did not, however, hear any sound. He said they rode by, moving forward, never looking his way, I find it interesting that my daughter heard the noise without seeing anything and my former son in law saw a vision but did not hear it as it took place.. As stated earlier I have not been able to find anyone else with a tale of "ghosts" at Green Hill Park and the employees indicate they have no record of the Battle taking place in that specific location. People do go to the park on occasion and do reenactments of Civil War Battles, but nothing can be verified on the trail where my daughter and her former spouse were walking. I shared this because there may be someone else who has had an uncanny encounter with the supernatural that cannot be explained. What I personally find fascinating, is that in most every tale of these sightings in this area, it is always the Confederate troops who are seen.

This is very interesting to read. It wouldn't surprise me if there are apparitions there from the Civil War. It's all interesting stuff, isn't it?

Wow! This story could change the way we see things and maybe also start believing in time traveling.
