God's Road Signs

Rev. Margaret Minnicks is an ordained Bible teacher. She writes many articles that are Bible lessons.

People are not allowed to drive unless they have a driver's license. They will not get a license unless they pass a driving test. They will not pass the test unless they know the road signs.

There are hundreds of road signs to keep drivers safe. They indicate when to stop, go, and slow down. They warn of curbs and hills ahead. They alert drivers about railroad crossings and slippery roads.

Road signs are ways to communicate with drivers when they are behind the wheel. God's word is also full of road signs indicating when to go, stop, and slow down. There are warnings for drivers to heed. Just as you need to obey the road signs when driving, you need to obey God's road signs that are found throughout the Bible.

Life is a journey, and road signs let us know we are traveling in the right direction. There are times when there is a road sign for us to stop and let other cars go. It is the same way on our life's journey. There are times when we need to stop and let others continue on their way.

Also, there are things that God wants us to stop doing and start doing something else. Know when to stop and know when to go. The big red road sign tells us when to stop. God's word and His presence give us guidance along the way as well.

Turn Around

When God sees you going into a dead end, He speaks to you to get you out of that situation. Listen to Him, and do what He says. He will tell you to turn around and go the other way when you are approaching a dead end.

Don't argue with God. Just obey Him and turn around.

Do Not Enter

There is some territory where God wants you to stay out of. You should be able to pay attention and abide by the "Do Not Enter" sign.

There is plenty of territory in the Kingdom of God where it is safe for you to go. God wants you to show up there.

God has given everyone an assignment to complete. Don't worry about what God has told others to do. You are accountable and responsible for your own God-given assignment. Stay in your lane and don't try to outdo others.

You will have to answer to God about what He had commanded you to do and not what He has commanded others to do.

The Lord's Prayer is found in Matthew 6 when Jesus gave His Sermon on the Mount. Within that prayer are the words: "And lead us not into temptation" (Matthew 6:13). Also, there is a hymn that says, "Yield not to temptation, for yielding is sin."

When you see the "Yield" road sign, you should give way to the other traffic. In spirituality, you should yield not to temptation.

Jesus is the Way

There are many road signs that help people drive safely. However, there are other signs along the way that communicate information to drivers. For instance, there are signs letting motorists know where they can pull off the highway to get gasoline, food, and lodging. In case of emergencies, a sign will let drivers know where the nearest hospital is located.

Keep your eyes open for road signs when you are driving. Along your life's journey, listen for God's voice telling you which way to go. There will be a sign pointing to Jesus Christ who is the way, the truth, and the life, according to John 14:6. If you follow that sign, you will arrive at the designation God wants for you.

  • God's Traffic Lights
Just as there are traffic lights on the highways to keep us safe, God put His traffic lights in the Bible to keep us safe as He guides us along the way.
