What Is God?

Sometimes writers distance themselves from religious subjects. Religion is still taboo to speak about. Read about it instead.

God is a Knowable and an Approachable Being

The first thing to accept as true followers of God is that He can be known. If it were not possible for God to be known, then why would He try to reveal Himself to people?

There exists thousands of religions; and within those thousands of religions there exists billions of religious beliefs around the globe! Each person who worships and believes in the Divine has to know a little about what he or she worships in order to properly worship.

In some pagan religions, the adherents cataloged lists of gods, their attributes and preferences and realms. This was so these people could know the god they were worshiping so as not to offend it.

In Greek and Roman mythology, the gods exhibited the same traits that their human acolytes did such as love, passion, jealousy, and the entire rainbow of human emotion.

In fact, in these faiths, humans who showed great honor became gods themselves and joined the culture of gods and goddesses for eternity to rule the earth.

Traditionally, it was offensive to the gods that humankind would not know of them and worship them.

Depending on the land or tribe and god associated with that land and tribe, the punishment for not knowing the god of the land was death.

The same is true of the true and real God. Not knowing Him is death to all things spiritual.

Jesus Prayed For All to Know God

God desires all of us to know Him just as the pagans knew their gods. Jesus prayed, "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." [John 17:3] He wants mankind to know of His plan for us for happiness, which is to become like He is, a god.

God wants to reveal all things to His children; so, He sent His Son to effect an infinite and eternal atonement for humanity. This gave us the opportunity to live in mortality and learn from others' and our own mistakes without being lost because of the demands of universal justice. Death is the reward for sin. Life is the gift for repentance.

We come to know God through keeping His commandments. We come to trust Him because of the peace He gives forgiving our sins. Elder Bernard P. Brockbank suggest in a sermon given in July of 1972 that

...Knowing God must come by direct revelation from God. You cannot know by the power of flesh and blood...

The Lord has indicated that the gates of hell cannot prevail against revelation from Him to any one of his children who desires to know the living God and to know the living Jesus Christ.

This is available by divine commitment and by divine will, that for anyone desiring to know God the Eternal Father and to know His Son Jesus Christ, God is under commitment and the gates of hell cannot prevail against that commitment; and it will be revealed through the power and principle of revelation direct from God to the one desiring to receive that information. (Knowing God)

Having a true desire to know God puts Him under obligation to reveal Himself! Jesus Christ, Himself has revealed to us through Joseph Smith, a prophet of God, in the Doctrine & Covenants that He is bound to us if we do what He says.

I, the Lord, am bound when ye do what I say; but when ye do not what I say, ye have no promise... (D&C 82:10)

The Lord is not like mortal man that He should lie. He willingly reveals Himself to all who will seek to know Him. It is an individual experience to know Him and very sacred. Only God can authorize to whom one who knows Him the amount of information he or she can share about that experience.

Most of us come to know God through the ministrations of the Holy Ghost. It is rare that many of us see Him in person.

God Is Human, That's The Great Mystery!

God is a glorified human being who loves all of humanity because we are His children--not just something He created out of frivolity.

One day we will remember Him and know of all the things that entered our hearts for our entire lives. We will literally be naked in front of God--not able to hide a thing of our secret acts or thoughts. We will have to account for it all.

Mortality and Humanity is only synonymous in this sphere called Earth. We talk about the love of God for us. He loves us because we are literally His offspring and He is Human. He is an immortal and glorified human being with parts and passions--passions that are perfectly in balance.

He desires all of us to be equally glorified and perfect as He is perfect as thousands of scriptural references attests. "Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the Lord your God am holy." Leviticus 19:2

God wants us to be just like He is, and He has commanded us to do so in many verses. "Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect." 3 Nephi 12:48

I am referring to God the Father, but the same is true of God the Son or Jesus Christ. He also has a glorified body of flesh and bone and desires us to be as perfect and glorious as He is perfect and Glorious, a god.

Again, God the Father has a body of flesh and bone as tangible or touchable as any other human and so does Jesus Christ. That is the big secret of heaven! The Holy Ghost has a body of spirit only and has not yet claimed His mortal body, but is the testifier for the Son of God as the Salvation of man.

People fear to admit that when Christ promises us that we will receive all that He has--all power and glory--that there is something blasphemous about drawing the conclusion that He intends for us to be gods as He is God.

If we are joint heirs with Him, what does that make us when we return to heaven? Paul writing to Timothy says, "Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing." 2 Timothy 4:8

If not Kings as Jesus is King, what purpose does the crown have? Should we diminish what Christ taught because some interpreters of His word assume that He will do less than what he promises?

God is a glorified human being who loves all of humanity because we are His children--not just something He created out of frivolity.

Christ promises to make us equals, not second-class citizens of heaven! He said Joint-heirs!

Let that soak in a bit. God promises us all things will be subject to us and all power will be given to us if we but follow His plan of salvation. What is that plan? To accept and follow Jesus Christ as the savior of all humans by doing His works of kindness among our brothers and sisters while we live and completing sacred ordinance as He did.

Every true Christian is to be an heir to the Throne of Heaven, a god!

If not Kings as Jesus is King, what purpose does the crown have? Should we diminish what Christ taught because some interpreters of His word assume that He will do less than what he promises?

The Purpose of Man

Why did God make us? He made us because He wanted more beings like Himself just as any parent would. His purpose is for us to achieve His level of culture.

Referring to Adam and Eve and by default all of their offspring, in scripture we read that He made us "to have dominion over the works of [His] hands; [God] hast put all things under [our] feet Psalms 8:6. God has given humanity dominion "over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." Genesis 1:26

It is in our nature to rule and have dominion because we are the offspring of God. We have genetic dispositions to reach beyond the limitation of the appetites of our bodies because that is how God intended His children to be!

When we received the glory that Christ has promised the faithful, "Then shall [we] be gods, because [we] have no end; therefore shall [we] be from everlasting to everlasting, because [we] continue; then shall [we] be above all, because all things are subject unto [us]. Then shall [we] be gods, because [we] have all power, and the angels are subject unto [us]." D&C132:20

That is an amazing promise to the saints of God if we are true to our relationship with Jesus Christ and follow the plan of salvation that He has modeled for us!

What is the effect of true Christianity? It is to make gods of men.

It is"given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature." 2 Peter 1:4

God's Grace is the Reason!

God knows our hearts, fears, and troubles. He will take into account the way we were reared and our limited understanding of things. He will give grace for the things we did not know and judge us based on what we understood to be correct. He will be a fair steward.

Since He watches always, we should take steps to improve in the right direction by being more kind to the stranger or helping a neighbor with his yard. By small and simple acts we can slowly work our way toward God so that our experience with Him will not be one of dread but one of happiness.

We will be able to review our lives with Him one day and smile that we gave Him much good to work within His name so that we can accept His grace for allowing us into His kingdom--not by our works, but His grace. God wants "to persuade our children [and us], and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do." 2 Nephi 25:23

Our works are the evidence of God's love ruling our lives and His grace is the ticket to the kingdom where Jesus Christ will be collecting at the gate.

As followers of Jesus Christ, many people believe that all people will be judged of God for acts, thoughts and words during mortality to account for them.

Knowing that all shall be judge helps to prevent negative behavior that may otherwise be rampant among Christians and other people of faith. God knows that informing people that we will be observed works!

The effect of God is to make more of His kind. We are His volunteers if we so choose to follow Christ.

What do you think?

Reflect on these Assertions

  1. God is a human male
  2. God expects us to become Glorified like He is glorified.
  3. God promises that we will share in His power and knowledge
  4. God is knowable and approachable

What are your thoughts that we may become gods?

Rodric Anthony Johnson (author) from Surprise, Arizona on May 06, 2014:

God is God and that is the most important thing to consider. I believe He is a glorified human and He has plans for us, His children to become glorified humans also.

God is not a mortal man that He should lie. He knows all things and does not need to justify Himself to others.

Also, again, according to my faith the other guy as you refer to Satan is my brother and cannot be my father. We all come from the same God. We might not like the fact the Lucifer is a creation of God, but he is.

Why do you keep writing that he is my father when I told you that is not what we believe?

passingtheword on September 18, 2013:

I just want to focus on one of your comments.. I will respond to the rest later. Whites mix out the blacks? Is that what you think about yourself and your family that you need to be mix out. Be a creature of my God is beautiful. He created the racies and said they were good. Your god does not say that. We were a glitch not meet to be we came out of evil. Why would you be apart of a group that thinks of you daughter wife mother comes from evil. I have so much to say but it is bedtime.

Rodric Anthony Johnson (author) from Surprise, Arizona on September 18, 2013:

I just read the Journal of Discourses references that you provided in context and they do not have the same sentiment that you portray here. Still, Brigham Young spoke harshly by today's standards but he was actually defending Blacks in his discourse in relation to the Civil War when he made those remarks. If you would read the entire discourse it will be clear that he was against slavery and the poor treatment of the Black person and he was against abolitionist who he thought worshiped Blacks. He wanted nothing to do with the slavery issue. Also, he was not teaching doctrine but giving a discourse and sharing his opinion. If you will look it up, there was never a tenet of the church that taught Whites marrying blacks would be cursed. If that were the case, what of the family of Blacks that married Whites in Utah, Elijah Abel's family? They married Whites until all the Black was mixed out of the family line and there are no trace of any more Black Abels. At least that family was not killed on the spot and Elijah Abel lived during the time of Brigham Young.

Also, my God is with a capital "g" and not a lowercase one. My God is Jesus Christ in whose name I live. I understand that you are still a Christian so remember that when you are referring to my God. Even if you believe I worship Him in name only a Christian does not disrespect that name of Christ.

I think your hatred for the Mormons is making you blind to using God's title vainly.

passingtheword on September 17, 2013:

Rodric his words that i shared before were words he taught on the pulpet. And like he also said that his word from the pulpet are inspired by your god. so i was a doctrine of the lds church.

Rodric Anthony Johnson (author) from Surprise, Arizona on September 17, 2013:

Yes, it is recorded that Brigham Young said those things. He was wrong. He was wrong about Black people. It is a shame that he did not live to retract the words he spoke. He did no speak under the inspiration of God but the racist cultural background from which he came. He mistaken assumed that Blacks are from the seed of Cain and that we alone represent that seed on the earth. It is untrue then and now. He was mistaken just like every other White person who thought that during that time. God fixed it in the end and I am happy that racist crap has never been a doctrine of the church, never. It has been popular among many White members to explain the priesthood ban, which itself was a concoction of racism. The Ban benefited the church and hurt the church depending on how it is explain, but it was a policy of the church shrouded in racism that was finally changed through revelation on the priesthood.

passingtheword on September 17, 2013:

Rodic I read your hub. few questions. Where in the bible does it say that God is a human of glorified human?

The black thing ok I am sure you heard this.... but....

Brigham Young said his discourses(his word) are as good as Scripture From your god.

"I say now, when they [his discourses] are copied and approved by me they are as good Scripture as is couched in this Bible . . . " (Journal of Discourses, vol. 13, p. 264; see also p. 95).

Brigham Young said he had never given any counsel that was wrong.

"I am here to answer. I shall be on hand to answer when I am called upon, for all the counsel and for all the instruction that I have given to this people. If there is an Elder here, or any member of this Church, called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who can bring up the first idea, the first sentence that I have delivered to the people as counsel that is wrong, I really wish they would do it; but they cannot do it, for the simple reason that I have never given counsel that is wrong; this is the reason." (Journal of Discourses, vol. 16, p. 161).

"Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the (rodric and your family) race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain ( You rodric your children), the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so." (Journal of Discourses, vol. 10, p. 110).

Now the comments (that all his words that he taught was from your god) So rodric you must believe what your prophet received these evil word from your lord. Which is the above statement. It is your doctrine and like BY said “It will always be so.”

This is What LDS say about you and your family your grandmother your child me everyone.

Rodric Anthony Johnson (author) from Surprise, Arizona on September 13, 2013:

passingtheword, according to my faith I am the offspring of God. Joseph Smith wasn't the racist. It was another person who hel those racists ideas due to his culture and that is Brigham Young.

You are right, God is not a MORTAL human. He is a not an imperfect man, fallible like us. He is a glorified human, which is what I write in the article. God has always been God as far as we understand the concept of time.

We will just have to disagree. Thank you for commenting however. I am not certain how much of the article you read, but I appreciate the little you did read.

By the way, I am so over the Black issue and the church. My ancestors were not cursed and all associated views with that teaching and practices are based in a lie. That however does not change the fact that God can reveal the truth about the church. That is why it is important to keep the commandments; otherwise, we are out of favor with God and start to question the things He reveals to us.

passingtheword on September 12, 2013:

Occording to your faith, Your are not God's off spring. You are from the other guy. (Which is false doctrine made up by a racist " Joseph Smith")

God is not human Numbers 23:19 God is not a man (Human), that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: has he said, and shall he not do it? or has he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

God was always God

Revelation 1:8

King James Version (KJV)

8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

God has always been God.
