Bono, Singer, Musician, Humanitarian

Bono of U2—5/10/1960—is an Irish singer, musician, and humanitarian mostly known for being the lead singer of U2. His real name is Paul David Hewson, and he was born in Dublin, Ireland. He writes most of the U2 song lyrics, many of which have strong political, social, and religious themes. Outside of the band he often collaborates with other artists and is a social activist, especially in Africa. Bono has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, and knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his philanthropic efforts. Bono has been married to Alison Hewson since 1982, and the couple has 4 children. Bono lives in Killiney in South County Dublin for most of the year, and shares a villa in the South of France, with the Edge, David Evans, a fellow band member.

Bono has become one of the most well known philanthropic performers and named the most politically effective celebrity of all time by the National Journal. He has a knack for bringing very diverse groups of people together in the name of a cause, a very Taurus type of thing, as the sign is ruled by Venus, Bono wants to bring comfort to those who suffer. Bono says he was moved to use his celebrity for human rights causes when he saw other famous people doing so for Amnesty International.

Bono has been increasingly involved in fighting and raising funds for AIDS in Africa in the last years, meeting with President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Paul Martin of Canada. He also did an African tour with U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill, an unlikely duo, to try to bring the plight of the Africans to his attention. Although he has been criticized for making huge sums of money while working for all his benefit causes, (most Taurus people are hard working and generous) Bono is well loved for both his music and efforts to help the less fortunate.

Johnny Galecki, Star of Big Bang Theory and Roseanne

Johnny Galecki—4/30/75—is a well known American actor, who is currently playing Leonard Hofstader in the popular Big Bang Theory. The show is about a group of physicists/science geeks, and Johnny’s character is the most socially “normal” one, although he gets into some very awkward situations himself. He has an on and off love affair with Penny, his neighbor across the hall, who came to LA from Nebraska to be an actress. Johnny and Kaley Cuoco (Penny) had a secret affair going on for two years before the other co-stars found out. They are currently married in the show.

Johnny was born in Bree, Belgium, as his father was a member of the Air Force and stationed there at the time of his birth. He has a younger brother and younger sister, and they grew up in Oak Park, IL. He made his acting debut opposite John Goodman in a miniseries Murder Ordained, and this led to his role in Roseanne, as Sara Gilbert’s (Darlene) boyfriend David. Gilbert also plays a role in the The Big Bang Theory, as scientist Leslie Van Winkle, who uses Leonard for sex, and is the arch rival of his roommate Sheldon. Laurie Metcalf plays Sheldon’s mother, and is also an alumni of Roseanne, so it is fun to see these people together again in different roles.

Other Acting Roles for Johnny Galecki

After acting in Murder Ordained, Galecki played Rusty Griswold in American Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and was in the 1997 slasher picture, I Know What You Did Last Summer. Galecki continued on in movies, with roles in Suicide Kings and Vanilla Sky.

Galecki starred in a Broadway show, The Little Dog Laughed, where he had to do his first nude scene, as his part was that of a male prostitute. He explains that, “At the core, the play is about all we sacrifice to be successful, whatever, our careers or goals.” The popular Douglas Carter Bean had a successful run at Second Stage and went on to the Cort Theater. Galecki got a 2007 Theater Award for his performance. Johnny also appeared briefly in the superhero comedy Hancock, alongside Will Smith and Jason Bateman. He has also made an appearance in a music video for the Dave Matthews Band Satellite. He played himself in 2001 in three episodes of Entourage. Galecki actually is a cellist, as he plays the cello on The Big Bang Theory. He owns 360 acres of land in Santa Margarita, CA, which feature vineyards and a log cabin. He is also a vegetarian.

Tina Fey

Tina Fey, Taurus Comedian, Writer, Actress

Tina Fey—or Elizabeth Stamatina Fey--5/18/1970—is a comedian, actress, writer and producer, mostly known for her work on Saturday Night Live, where she appeared in comedy sketches for nine years. Prior to that, she was part of the Second City Comedy Improvisational Troupe in Chicago, where many SNL comedians get their starts. It is harder for women to break into the comedy field than it is for men, so she is very talented. But Tina became the head writer as well as performer at SNL, and played the co-anchor in the popular Weekend Update segment.

She created the comedy show 30 Rock when she left SNL in 2006, where she plays the head writer of a fictional sketch comedy series (something she knows a lot about)! Taurus people have an unexpected funny bone. She began the series as the Untitled Tina Fey Project, and still worked at SNL while she was writing the scripts for the new show, according to her contract with NBC.

The pilot centered around a head writer of a variety show, and how she managed relationships with the show’s difficult star and executive producer. The show did pretty well, and got picked up for a second season. Tina Fey won an Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. The next year, 2008, Fey picked up the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award, and an Emmy! 30 Rock returned for a 2011-12 season, delayed because Fey was pregnant with her second child. Tina credits the influence of Julia Louis Dreyfus, and the show has been renewed for a last and seventh season.

Tina Fey as Sarah Palin

Tina Fey's Impersonations of Sarah Palin Captivated Audiences!

During the 2008 Presidential campaign, Tina Fey did such terrific impersonations of Sarah Palin that still it is unclear if Palin really said some of the less smart things she said, or if it was Tina who said them in a parody! Fey has been in the Hot 100 list at number 80 in Maxim magazine, and has been listed as one of People Magazine’s Most Beautiful People. News editors and broadcast producers of the Associated Press voted Fey AP entertainer of the year and said she had the biggest impact on culture and entertainment in 2008. The New York Post has voted her one of the Most Powerful Women, and Fey has appeared on Forbes Celebrity 100 list in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Barbara Walters has selected Tina as one of the most Fascinating People, and in September 2011, she became one of TV’s highest paid actresses.

Fey is married to Jeff Richmond, who she dated for seven years before marrying him in a Greek Orthodox Ceremony. The couple has two daughters, Alice, born in 2005, and Penelope, born in 2011. Tina Fey’s 2011 autobiography entitled Bossypants was highly praised by the New York Times. Tina’s charity work is in behalf of Autism Speaks, an organization which sponsors autism research. Fey is also a member of Mercy Corps, in their attempt to end world hunger.

Cher, Singer and Actress

Cher-- 5/20/46-- met Sonny Bono at 16, when he encouraged her to become a singer. She and Sonny were friends, then lovers, and eventually they married. Cher became the more popular half of the Sonny & Cher duo when they had their own TV show in 1971. Their best known song, I’ve Got You Babe, was considered a favorite by many. Cher wore outrageous clothes designed by Bob Mackie, and became a fashion trendsetter. She was content to let Sonny run her career (a Taurus trait, they will let others take care of details they don’t like) When they divorced, in 1987, Cher won the best Actress Oscar for her role in Moonstruck, and Sonny became a Congressman in California.

Cher’s career has spanned 49 years, and she has reached the top of the Billboard charts in each of six decades, something unaccomplished by anyone else. Cher was also married to Greg Allman of the Allman Brothers Band for two years, producing a son, Elijah. Her Grammy winning song Believe was on an album of dance numbers, so successful it restarted her career. She worked shows in Las Vegas from 2008-2011, and still has a large following. Cher is revered by LGBTQ audiences everywhere, because of her flamboyant sense of style and refusal to let anyone put her in a mold.

George Lucas, Filmmaker, Screenwriter

George Lucas is an American film producer, screenwriter, and director, mostly known as the writer of the famous intergalactic Star Wars movies, and the Indiana Jones archaeologist movies. Lucas grew up in California, and graduated at USC. His career took a course towards directing and writing some of the best loved films of our times. Star Wars is the classic story of good versus evil. The main character, Luke Skywalker, the hero of the Star Wars trilogy and its prequels, takes the “Hero’s Journey” as described by Joseph Campbell.

The strong theme of “the force” in the Star Wars movies led Lucas to study Eastern religions, and to call himself a Buddhist/Methodist. He established Industrial Light and Magic, a special effects company, so he could revamp some of the effects in his original Star Wars trilogy, and 22 years later, the three part prequel to Star Wars. Lucas also created his own company Lucasfilm Ltd. The original Star Wars Trilogy became the highest grossing films of all time, until Steven Spielberg released E.T.

Lucas waived his fee as director and instead wanted licensing fees for Star Wars. So many toys and costumes were on the market related to these films, and it earned Lucas hundreds of millions of dollars. You may notice here that Taurus people generally are wealthy or at least do not have financial worries keeping them up at night. George Lucas worked in many capacities on all the other Star Wars films, and as the executive producer and story writer of all the Indiana Jones movies, which were directed by his friend Stephen Spielberg.

Lucas also developed Pixar, the computer animation group, later bought by Steve Jobs. Early in 2012, George Lucas announced his retirement from producing blockbuster films in order to produce smaller, independently budgeted films. Lucas has pledged to give half of his fortune to charity as part of “The Giving Pledge,” led by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. These are several of the many examples of Taurus business acumen and generosity.

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare, Writer, Poet, Playwriter

William Shakespeare—4/26/1564--4/23/1616—is often regarded as the best writer in the history of the English language. His early plays were often comedies and histories, and he began to be widely recognized by the end of the 16th century. Several of his well known works are Hamlet, King Lear, Othello, and Macbeth. His work continues to be studied in universities even today, as they are also romantic, political and social commentaries. Taurus people tell it as they see it, and as a playwright and poet, Shakespeare had a perfect forum to do this.

Shakespeare was married already at the age of eighteen to Anne Hathaway, they later had one daughter and twins, a boy and a girl, but the son did not survive. Nobody knows the year Shakespeare began writing, but some of his words were attacked in 1592, something every writer experiences at one time or other. By 1599 he formed a company with other friends and they were able to build their own theater on the bank of the Thames, so they began to make money, and Shakespeare bought a large home in Stratford. Taurus people crave security, and like to own their own homes and property.

Other works include The Taming of the Shrew, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Comedy of Errors, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, Romeo and Juliet, and Alls Well That Ends Well, to list more. The best known words from one of his plays, are most likely the line from Hamlet, “To be or not to be, that is the question.” Shakespeare’s Sonnets were among his last published works, in about 1609, in a book containing more than 150 of them. Critics praised them as being, “a profound mediation on love, sexual passion, procreation, time and death.”

There appear to be two women about which most of these were written, and it is unclear if Shakespeare was involved with them, or if they lived in his vivid imagination. Some people are unsure of Shakespeare’s sexuality, as some of his sonnets appear to be written to another man, and his 26 Dark Lady sonnets are attributed to a married woman. Whatever his private life, he certainly added so much to literature, although now some are trying to discredit him and say he was not the author of some of the works previously thought written by him. Perhaps we will never know the real answer to that. He was not revered much in his lifetime, but did receive much praise. There are no known portraits or pictures of Shakespeare. But as Taurus people only speak when they have something important to say, his body of work is well loved even now.

My Favorite Shakespeare Sonnet

Why I Love This Sonnet

When my husband and I married, we had a garden wedding. All the guests contributed in special ways. We expected our Best Man to make the first toast, but never expected this shy guy to read this for us all! He was also a friend of mine in High School, so knew both of us the whole time we were dating. It was so unexpected and beautiful, I want to share it. I like to think we lived up to these great expectations (at least in our friend's mind). At the time, all my husband's friends thought he was nuts to marry so young!

Much later, I asked our Best Man how my husband to be acted when he drove him to the wedding. Apparently even though his friend liked me, he thought maybe we were rushing into things, and told him so. My almost husband replied, "I loved her the night I met her, and want her to be with me no matter where my life takes me." It's so hard to let him go, but I was certainly a lucky woman.

I love Michelle Pfieffer, George Lucas and Cher.....all famous Taureans. Thanks for mentioning a great star sign!! Votes up and away!

John Sarkis from Winter Haven, FL on April 29, 2012:

Hi Jean, hope all is well in your neck of the woods. We haven't spoken in a while....

I loved your hub. Yes, Taurus are really great and disciplined people; my brother and a close friend of mine are both Taurus. And, I can tell you that discipline is a hard topic of me.

Take care of yourself

PS. How's Helium turning out for you?

Jean Bakula (author) from New Jersey on April 27, 2012:

Hi Patrice,

How are you? I didn't know about Stevie Wonder. I'm trying to put both young and older people, so there's someone to interest everyone. I'm not too familiar with musical groups, once groups weren't selling CD's anymore, I never chose to listen to an I Pod and such. The Geminis are a hoot, but they are legends, like Dylan, Marilyn Monroe, Che Guevara, etc. I'll wait a while until their time of Sunsign is closer. Talk soon.

PWalker281 on April 27, 2012:

Hmmm ... don't know what happened to my comment. Thought I posted it. Oh well ... Just wanted to say that I enjoyed reading about these famous Taurus Sun Sign folk and that Stevie Wonder is another one, born 3 days before me (he got all the music talent that should have been mine :-)). Voted up and interesting.

Jean Bakula (author) from New Jersey on April 27, 2012:

Hello ishwaryaa22,
