Bad Attitude

Stay Clear!

Stay Clear!

Self-help

If you are thinking that controlling things for a better life works, you are wrong. A better life is an inside job. A better life is not about making circumstances better. A better life is about making you better, not about making all of life better. A better life is talking about making your life better.

Sometimes we just get upset. Usually a circumstance involving other people. We like to say, “I am not mad at you, but your attitude stinks”. People can do really not nice things to you. You need to get over the person and just deal with the attitude that made them act that way. Going all negative on it will not help. Ignoring it will not help. Letting it bug you and it will cause great grief. Another person’s attitude is to be understood not changed except to help that person.

Of course this is best done with a fine attitude. (Do not get me wrong, do not show a happy attitude to an angry spouse) Show comradery which could change an attitude to the better. Validation is a huge part of maintaining a better life. Perhaps giving it is far more important than receiving it. We can validate ourselves with a proper attitude.

I have been reading what I would call “self-help” stuff. Usually they have a list of things to do. And usually they are rather helpful, but you read some really good stuff and it merely gets repeated 4 billion times. “Secrets” to a better life are still not secrets, although I keep looking and seeing that we all do not know intuitively. I like, stop smoking and drinking. Do we really need someone to tell us that those will not lead to a better life?

But there is no mistaking the situation as it is. It is not what occurs it is our attitude and dealing with it that creates a better life.

Eat this way, exercise that way, don’t do that and do this. Meditate, pray, spend time in nature drink plenty of water. OK we get that but if you do all of that with a bad attitude it yields not a better life, you just get to live longer in misery. If you have not heard that talking to your animals (and probably plants) is good for them. I don’t think they mean yelling obscenities at them. It is the attitude in the voice that can make a difference, good or bad.

Amazing Attitude

Mustard

Little seed, huge tree.

Little seed, huge tree.

Healthy Living

Stages of grief. A good attitude and being happy are not synonymous. Suffer a great loss and you will go through the miserable stages of grief. If you do not you will be stuck on one. And that can be real bad for you and others. “Move on” means just that and it does not mean skip a step. Get stuck in one of the stages and you shall remain with a bad attitude and all the healthy lifestyle choices will not create a better life. Note we say “create”. Attitude is a creation of the day to day. You do not own a good attitude. It is one of those double deals. You have to have a good attitude in order to create a good attitude.

I do not think this takes work. As a matter of fact if you followed all the self-help suggestions you would not have time to sit around and enjoy all your hard work. Driven to a good attitude? How about if you just leave your city and go to another one and everything will be better. Not likely because no matter where you are, there you are. A Better life?

So self-help for a healthier life. I have never been a good stretcher. Thank goodness for Yoga. Pre exercise and post exercise stretching out the muscle and relaxing them is critical. It enhances the benefits of the exercise and it helps you to get more out of it, healthwise. It also is critical for avoiding injury. Yes I mean 5 minutes of stretching before and after a brief fast paced 30 minute walk. Now this will do you no good with a bad attitude. If all you do is concentrate and bemoan the discomfort of the stretching it is almost worse for you. If while you do it you consciously send good vibes to the area and thank God you have that area you will get far more from it. Try doing the stretching stuff without deep breathing, good luck with that. That would be just struggling.

The point is, is that even doing the healthiest things you can do, if you do them with a bad attitude they could actually be more harmful. Try eating when you are really pissed off. Real good for you, not. Anger even effects digestion.

The Journey

It takes an attitude to climb up.

It takes an attitude to climb up.

Keep On!

Rules

It is said that negative behavior gets its power by persuading oneself to believe that ones self will be happier if that self follows it. The power of the negative is the prospect that it will make me a happier better person. Heavy. Revenge comes to mind. Seeking revenge may be the worst attitude, it seems to have all the negative attributes. Revenge can never lead to a better life. Ask people who have sought after it and achieved it. If they answer in the positive run, don’t walk, away.

Another way of looking at it is about “toxic” people. Generally I say do not avoid them, infect them with your better life. A rendered surrender with power, is the finest route to a good life and a better life. This is not an achievement but a practice. A better life is a constant gut check as to how we are doing inwardly. Bad attitude? Change it. Good attitude, study it. Absorb it. Feel it and create a habit of producing good feelings.

So you are looking for my list of 6. Good luck. I put that in there to emphasize that if we are trying to do things to create a better life we kind of miss the boat. Just like obtaining a thing is a losing proposition on the road to a better life.

Let us try on self denial and give it a go. Sorry, but that does not work (addicts of any sort excluded). Why are you denying yourself of something? We like to say around here that if you are filled with love there is not room for anything else. Leave that starving yourself alone. If you drink tons of water and eat good food you are not hungry, therefor not hungry for the bad. It just takes a little attitude and positive practice for a better life.

I am not going to tell you to do or not do anything. Just whatever you do, do it with a good attitude. A positive perspective yields positive results. Although I have done it a bit ago, fighting with a good attitude takes some or maybe a whole bunch of practice. Think of the successful athletes. The compete and really like it.

Alright I just have to give a list: 1.Love. 2. Love someone 3. Love with all you got. 4. Love unceasingly 5. Love your enemy/competitor. 6. Love.

Today we are late in getting this done. I went too hard and heavy with a shovel and got a nasty one on my palm. Yes I start chores long before dawn these days where the temperature will reach 110+. And got behind. Oh dear.

But how great to get it done and published. Yes I have a good attitude today!

Thanks a ton Tom. I so respect your work, so I will take your suggestion very seriously. I think you have mentioned this is an article or two. I will have to be careful though as I write from experience and do not want a story for each point :-).

Tom Ware from Sydney, Australia on September 11, 2020:

A personal story, or even two or three personal stories would add more impact to what is otherwise quite a profound Hub. Ticks for putting so much into it.

Eric Dierker (author) from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on September 10, 2020:

Thanks so muchg Rania. You comment makes my day. Isn't that funny about us couples.

Rania Heikal from Egypt on September 10, 2020:

I loved this love matrix. It is really very useful to me. You went to the pulp straight: the good attitude. And (Do not get me wrong, do not show a happy attitude to an angry spouse). You are a wise man :))

Eric Dierker (author) from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on September 09, 2020:

Thank you Denise. Sometimes it strikes me that the only real perfection achievable it "striving" I can always strive and mistakes are part of that. things that get me down are usually a lack of trying.

Eric Dierker (author) from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on September 09, 2020:

Sorry that I missed you earlier Drew. You make my evening, thank you.

Denise McGill from Fresno CA on September 09, 2020:

I learned long ago that I have no control over circumstances, environment, or other people. But I can strive to be a better person than the one I was yesterday. If I keep that in mind every day, then I can't hope but to be a better person eventually, and live a better life. Don't you think?

Blessings,

Denise

Drew Agravante from Philippines, Currently in Qatar on September 08, 2020:

Thanks for the awesome lessons, Eric. I feel like I can do some introspection more about this topic. One word - inspirational.

Linda I thank you, your encouragement is a great way to start our day.

Eric Dierker (author) from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on September 08, 2020:

Thank you Siny and a wonderful truth you lay out. When we are in a good attitude space we are sure to remember this. A bad attitude and we may distance ourselves and forget our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I have only seen that about 1 million times in myself and others.

Linda Crampton from British Columbia, Canada on September 07, 2020:

I love your statement that a better life is an inside job. You've shared some excellent advice in this article.

Jacob from Delhi, India on September 07, 2020:

Nice hub. We do many thing to lead a better life. But we need to understand that God through Jesus provided us all the good things for our life. Many of us are ignorant of it and Satan try to cover it up. Jesus, the unblemished lamp bore all the infirmity for us. We need to understand it and accept it. It will give us a good and happy life.

Eric Dierker (author) from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on September 07, 2020:

Mary it is just plain in my case. I would not be here without my positive attitude.

Yes, I was looking for your list of six, but it wouldn't make any sense to hold it against you. Thanks for the lessons, anyway.

Mary Norton from Ontario, Canada on September 07, 2020:

Attitude is the key. When you have it, it gets you through so many challenges.

Linda Lum from Washington State, USA on September 07, 2020:

Eric, you inspire me. You make me want to be a better me. Thank you for taking the time to write these sermons; they are created in and given in love.

Bill thank you. I am headed to clean/sort/giveaway/throw away my tools in the garage. A task I have a bad attitude about but getting it done creates a good attitude.

Raymond Philippe from The Netherlands on September 07, 2020:

Love your positive attitude. It is contagious!

Eric Dierker (author) from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on September 07, 2020:

Lorna my studies in DBT and CBT form much of the basis on attitude being critical. Positive self-talk and change vs acceptance are fascinating in that area.

I like the idea about putting the good out there. I know I feel better when I do, plus it might be good for someone else ;-)

None of my sermons are copyrighted in any fashion - it just feels wrong with a sermon. I would be honored.

Eric Dierker (author) from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on September 07, 2020:

Devika you have one of the greatest attitudes around.

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on September 07, 2020:

Great attitude indeed, buddy! I'm going to strap on my attitude and get some work done today, smiling every step of the way. I've got a lot to be thankful for.

Eric Dierker (author) from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on September 07, 2020:

Flourish, with these more family time days my wife and I spend some time talking about the falling world. Our life is not. So we can talk calmly about it and generally shake our heads.

Our perspective is skewed as our life is so good.

Eric Dierker (author) from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on September 07, 2020:

Thank you Swati, I am glad it was not too eclectic. Have a great week.

Lorna Lamon on September 07, 2020:

I enjoyed this motivational and inspiring read Eric. I agree it's all about our attitude to life that makes the difference. Having a healthy attitude to life increases the amount of positive vibes we put out into the world. This allows us to take notice of all the things we are grateful for, and once this happens we lose sight of the things we lack.

I like your six points on love as the unlimited power of caring and loving will vastly improve your own quality of life. If you don't mind Eric, I would like to use this article to help my clients on their path to recovery. Another enjoyable read.

Devika Primić from Dubrovnik, Croatia on September 07, 2020:

Your attitude to a better life is useful an I have been busy at that. A better life comes from anyone who chooses to live that way

Ankita B on September 06, 2020:

This is a great and motivational read. I love the photos you have chosen along with their beautiful captions.

FlourishAnyway from USA on September 06, 2020:

Attitude Is everything. You’ve given me an idea for a self-help book. It’s not one you’d probably write but the underlying message is oozing acceptance. I’m all about just staying as chill and even as possible even when the world around you is falling apart and people are coming unglued. Someone has to.

Swati Khandelwal from Nainital on September 06, 2020:

Very well formulated. I really loved it

Eric Dierker (author) from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on September 06, 2020:

Liz that is my way. Pray and when you are done praying pray all day long. I was concerned that if I suggested praying with a bad attitude was not good. People may get confused and forget that that is the best time to pray.

Eric Dierker (author) from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on September 06, 2020:

Mr. Happy, Rattlesnake meat is delicious, no not like chicken, more like wild Salmon.

Who me upset ever? Lol

I think Self-help stuff must just be a foundationary thing. Their goals are not mine. They are bare minimum.

My daughter says "Plants are people too".

I think the Elders have it right

Eric Dierker (author) from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on September 06, 2020:

Thank you Pamela, you lift me up. I was all off balance I was focusing on how much it hurt rather than how I could heal it. Oh well, back to the practice field.

Liz Westwood from UK on September 06, 2020:

You give an interesting perspective on life. How about getting help from above to guide us through life's difficult paths?

Mr. Happy from Toronto, Canada on September 06, 2020:

Is that a rattle snake? I heard You can cook them. Well, I didn't hear, I saw a video of a guy doing it in Arizona.

"Sometimes we just get upset." - Yes, I did have a moment today like that when I found out my father threw-out my portable BBQ and I'm heading to the bush for almost a week tomorrow. QQ - that's the sign for crying LOL

"I have been reading what I would call “self-help” stuff." - Yes You do. You read my piece about masks, haha!!

"If you have not heard that talking to your animals (and probably plants) is good for them." - I actually apologize when I bump into plants and I do talk to them often. They are living Beings.

I've never seen a mustard Tree. That looks huge!! Thank You for sharing that.

"A better life is a constant gut check as to how we are doing inwardly. Bad attitude? Change it. Good attitude, study it. Absorb it" - I try to follow the Zoroastrian's main rules: "Think good thoughts. Say good things. Do good deeds." Do I always succeed? No but I constantly try to do better.

When not sure which way to go, ask: "Does my path have heart?" if it does keep going; if not, change the path. A Native Elder said that at some point.

Thank You for the piece of writing. Cheers!

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on September 06, 2020:

This is a good sermon, Eric. I think attitude is everything. Your suggestions, like the yoga and stretching, are good. This is a well-written article that is full of Eric's wisdom. :-)
