Do Ghosts And Spirits Really Exist Or Is There Something Else Out There?

Author:

Things That Go Bump In The Night

I have recently got to thinking about why we believe in ghosts. After watching so many TV programs about haunted houses, old pubs and of the course the obviously haunted sewers, I seriously wondered if these ghosts were actually quite mad! If you think about it, why on earth would ghosts stay around an old sewer, or even the house they used to live in?

I mean surely, if there really is something out there called Heaven or even Hell, wouldn't they want to go and explore? Yes, to a certain degree I understand them wanting to stay in the same house that they had been born in, it must be quite fascinating to see all the mod cons and the new owners. But surely after a while you would get bored. This is of course if the ghost had any residual sensel left over, after leaving this earthly coil.

But to stay in the sewers? Apart from a few rats and mice, and of course all the nasty floating objects shooting past them, what else is there for them to do? And why do all the ghost hunters have to do everything in the dark? Why don't they at least light a candle. So what is the reason why we believe in ghosts?

Simple Explanation.

Over the centuries, myths and legends have always told of ghostly maidens walking through graveyards in the dead of night, or eerie wailing has been heard in the woods nearby. As science has progressed and we along with it, surely we must know that nearly all of the so called ghost sightings have a simple explanation. For example, noises in the woods we now know are usually a sign of owls or other creatures going about their business. Sightings are usually just shadows or Will o' the Wisp which as we now know is glowing methane or gas clouds coming up from the ground, caused by organic decay.

Sounds in the house can be explained by the walls and furniture expanding and contracting in the heat. And of course the so called cold spots that usually appear in a house are just that, a draught under the door.

But what about the people who actually see ghosts?

Will o' the Wisp Flickr.com

Will o' the Wisp Flickr.com

Usually whenever a person appears on TV talking about their encounter with a ghost, they usually come out with the same story. They were walking up the stairs, and all of a sudden they saw a ‘ghostly form’ walk past them. The trouble is by the time the person gets interviewed, their mind has decided to add lovely little titbit's such as, ‘and they were wearing a crinoline dress!’ why is that? I don’t personally think they are making it up, I believe that by the time they have thought about it, talked to friends and got themselves into a frenzy about being interviewed, their brain has made the whole thing up into a great big adventure. And that, I think, is the problem.

Fight And Flight

Our minds are as deep and unknown as the depths of the Ocean, and the expanse of Space. There is only so much we know about how our brains work. Take for example the fact that someone does actually see something. In this scenario, a girl is walking through an empty house. It is cold and dark, the lights outside have gone out and she fumbles around for the light switch to see where she is going.

What’s happening to her body? To start with her adrenaline is fine, but as she begins to get uncomfortable with the situation, her body goes into the fight and flight mode. Her breathing becomes erratic, and before you know it, she sees or hears a ghost. There can be two explanations for this, apart from imagination. One, the animal instinct in her makes her vision much more clear, she sees things that she wouldn't normally take in. Floating dust mites, shadows from the trees outside and so on. And the second is, maybe her brain is trying desperately to figure out what it is she is seeing. Her mind tries to make shapes out of the darkness and comes up with the one explanation that is deeply implanted into her subconscious mind. A ghost.

Ley Lines or Magnetic Force

There of course is another explanation. The Earth does emanate a certain amount of magnetic force, and people who believe in the Spiritual Science of the Earth think that these lines effect our minds. Ley Lines were even studied to see if they did produce some sort of Psychic energy. Of course ley lines may just be a myth.

They were discovered by Alfred Watkins back in 1921, who, when riding out across the hills of Bredwardine Hertfordshire England, suddenly noticed that most of the paths and roads seemed to meet at certain points. Castles, Churches and other Sacred sites all seemed to line up. Looking more closely, he discovered that they had been used for Centuries even before the building of the said Castles etc. His studies indicated that ancient man must somehow have known about these Psychic pathways and built on them accordingly. This has been debunked by Scientists, who state that the lines in question do not even exist. But the one thing we do know is that certain magnetic forces can affect peoples memory as shown recently on the Science lectures on TV.

Subliminal Suggestion

Certain stimuli to our brains can affect our cognitive thinking. By coincidence after watching another science program that talked about this, my friend phoned me and said that the night before, she had seen a ghost. Now she is not prone to imagination, she is a hardened Scottish lass who doesn't believe or take notice of any nonsense. So as you can imagine I was very surprised. What she told me corresponded to what I had seen on the Program.

It was late at night and she was standing in her living room sorting out boxes of papers for work. The room was quiet and she was completely alone. All of a sudden, out of the corner of her eye, she suddenly saw a figure standing in the doorway. She jumped and dropped the box. She was totally convinced that she had seen someone. She thought it was a man. Her husband was upstairs in bed at the time and couldn’t have been him.

When I asked her if she could hear any cars outside, she looked at me in complete amazement. Yes, she said, there were a few driving past. So I told her what I had heard on the program. Evidently the sound of the cars whoomping over the speed bumps, and the quiet darkness of the room, actually affects your mind. In other words, her ghost was imagination caused by the stimuli.

It was the perfect scenario for subliminal suggestion.

Time Slips and Other Scenario's

So, we have all the mind scenarios explained. What about the real ghost sightings? These are the ones that cannot be explained by fright, subliminal suggestions and magnetic forces affecting our brain patterns.

The one thing that I have noticed in all of the ghostly wanderings that people report, is the fact that ghost A will always appear at a certain time of the night, and walk across the road to house B.

In other words the ghost is doing the same thing night after night. What does that tell you?

1. Ghost A and house B are in a time loop. In other words it really is a ghost but on the Other Plane where it lives, it either has no memory and has to keep walking over to House B, or time has gone forward in that Other Plane but we only see the loop.

2. The Ghost is in fact a 'Memory' of that person. In other words, we all know that we have an Aura. Scientific explanation is that we all emanate electricity around us. Same thing. Maybe in certain conditions we can see the outline of the Aura, which would explain the continuous loop going round and round.

3. Another Dimension. Maybe we see in certain circumstances another World that is overlapping our own. This would explain ghosts that don’t stay in the same place and in fact walk around the house at different times of the day and night, doing totally different things each time.

4. A Time Slip. This is the one that I actually believe in. Time is a man made concept to a certain extent. Obviously time does happen, Planets are born, Planets die etc. But maybe time loops back on itself sometimes, as Einstein believed. It would also explain precognition and premonition, in other words seeing into the future.

There has been a study by physicists who deal with quantum physics, stating that maybe what we see as time is not linear. In other words it doesn’t go from A to B across the Centuries, but it has all happened at once, and sometimes our minds ‘lift’ above our consciousness, rather like sitting in a Helicopter looking down, and ‘see’ the past or the future. As I stated in my article Time Travel Anne Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain The Ghost of Versailles

And of course the last explanation is a Ghost. Simple as that. Maybe Marie Antoinette is still haunting Versailles. Anne Boleyn is still looking for her head in the Tower of London. And of course Great Grandma Jones is still walking around your bedroom looking for her false teeth!

You decide.

Quite a compendium here. I am sure that, if there are ghostly spirits, they will pay you visits in protest for questioning their existence. So, keep us posted, won't you?

Nell Rose (author) from England on October 14, 2019:

Hi Gweneth, Yes this sounds so familiar! I get that feeling sometimes. And sometimes there is a noise with it, or maybe just a feeling, a very strong feeling, that someone is there. It can be frightening, especially in the night. I have had that around the same time as you. Not being asleep, but just reading. I also say go away, or the Lords Prayer, or something witchy. Who knows whether its a ghost or maybe another dimension? Maybe some day they will know. But yes its genuine!

Gweneth on October 13, 2019:

So last night i was in my room drawing and it was around 2am....i heard someones hand clap. At first i thought something fell but there was nothing. As i sat there continuing to draw i was thinking ummm that sounded like a person who clapped. There is no mistaking that sound. I also noticed that out of no where my goose bumps were strong. I calmly said .... go away! About 2 min passed and my room felt fine. By the way my room is in the basement lol.

I totally believe in spirits my daughter took her life about eight months ago something from a four-story building. After her death I spent a few with my daughter out of town.I have left my husband behind along with the belongings of my daughters store do not watc I had left my husband behind along with the belongings of my daughters stored in our garage. A door in the living room is the only thing that separates the living room from the garage and has been complaining to me after he got home from dropping me off to visit regarding the house is extremely cold and he could not get it to heat which was not normal , followed by smelling my daughters perfume and seeing a shadow in the hall Heading towards my bedroom . He is a strong man and this is not something he believed in or was afraid of .Implored me never to leave without taking her ashes with me again because he thought she was upset. implored me never to leave without taking her and she’s with me again because he felt she was upset . About a month or so after I discovered that she had been homeless living on the streets of times this made me feel terrible.I have never seen ghost in my life before but one night I woke up in the morning night because it was storming outside I got out of bed to go to the bathroom and I started thinking about my daughter I felt so bad her you storm off so I thought oh my God you were in this all by yourself I begin to tell her how sorry I was out loud . Went back to the bedroom andvmy husband was sleeping soundly Which I thought was unusual because he always woke up when I got out of bed and he always woke up from the stor which I thought was unusual because he always woke up when I got out of bed and he always woke up during a storm. As I laid back down I began to cry and tell my daughter How sorry I was That had probably been out in the cold alone The storm was very loud and I was crying and all of a sudden I felt pressure come down on the mattress in my bed and then I felt her phon I felt pressure come down on the mattress of my bed and then I frltvher hands take mine, I felt peaceful as if she was telling me it was OK that she was ok and then the storm was gone just stopped and I fell asleep. Next day I spoke to my best friend she told me that there had been no storm and she felt that the storm was crazy for my daughter to let me knowt next day I spoke to my best friend she told me that there had been no storm and she felt that the storm was created by my daughter to let me know that she was ok, I believe that to this day

What people call ghosts are actually spirits as in demons pranking humans.

Nell Rose (author) from England on June 24, 2013:

Hi B. I know exactly what you mean, being a quantum physics lover I do go for the all time now thing too. It does make sense, if ghosts are really timeslips, which I firmly believe then it does seem true. lovely story about your mother, and I do hope its true what you said about alive without a body, thanks so much for reading, nell

Brian Leekley from Bainbridge Island, Washington, USA on June 23, 2013:

Up and Interesting.

Another form of ghosts are the "spirit balls" or "ghost orbs" or "floating balls of light". There have been some hubs about them.

About time, I've been reading CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD BOOK 3 by Walsch, and it posits the notion that from one perspective, time is happening in sequence, and from another perspective, all happenings are happening now. The analogy used is of a rock, which looks like it is sitting solid motionless, but if seen at the atomic and sub-atomic level, is seen to be in constant motion. To me the all time now notion is implausible, but what do I know.

The same book describes what it is like to be dead -- alive without a body, able to travel from here to anywhere at the speed of a wish and to give signs to loved ones on earth, such as that they are fine. See Chapter 3 and Chapter 6 pages 121-125.

My mother was cremated in a crematorium a few days after she died some years ago. My sister and younger brother were there. Both later described the sense of a strong presence slowly passing by and communicating a sense of love and freedom.

Thanks MrM, I will go and take a look, the Giants fascinate me, I remember reading a while ago about one they had found but can't remember where it was, nell

MrMaranatha from Somewhere in the third world. on March 30, 2013:

I think we already have allot of archaeological proof to be honest with you.. But the powers that be do not want to believe in God or anything spiritual for that matter... so they tend to bury the evidence instead of bringing it to light. If you google images of Giants whose skeletons have been found in archaeological digs.. you might be amazed at what you find. I believe it was Og's bed of Iron that was found not too long ago... and lots of other things have been found related to very Large people... :-)

Nell Rose (author) from England on March 29, 2013:

Hi MrMaranatha, yes I totally understand, in fact I am reading a fiction book about the subject at the moment, niphilim being the children, its something that should not be dismissed as we in the modern world tend to do, how do we know that this didn't happen? something did for sure, its a fascinating subject, I just hope one day we will find archaelogical proof of it, that way we can put it down as fact and not myth, thanks so much for reading, nell

MrMaranatha from Somewhere in the third world. on March 29, 2013:

This is a "Just My Opinion"

There are several different things involved here... several different entities being dealt with.

1 Angels

2 Fallen Angels

3 After the Fall those Angels that were now bound to the earth then Co Habitated with Humans (Gen 6) and Had Babies... Men of renoun like Hercules and Aquilles of Greek mythos.

4 When those 1/2 breed Angelic/Human Kids eventually died they were in an odd situation for they were not under either the Adamic Covenant, Nor were they directly involved in the Angelic Rebellion.

5 The Humans go to the heart of the earth when they die.. or they may go directly to heavenly dwellings depending on their standing with the Messiah who died for all under the Adamic Race.

6 The half Breeds (Angelic-Human) that are caught in between have no permanent dwelling place, and they have no covenant relation under God. Since they no longer have a fleshly corporal body, they spend much time looking for a flesh and blood host (human preferred but animals are not exempt either) or finding some mischief to get into. Their Parents were Rebellious Angels who left heavens riches and chose to walk their own paths of choosing to begin with and since these were the offspring created in that rebellion against God... what can you expect from them but the worst forms of behaviors. Demonic Possessions, Hauntings, and any other trouble that they can cause are but a single thought away from being acted on. Leading people astray into false religions is something they excel in. They love to steal the worship of God himself.

Biblical References to these things would be found in:

Genesis 6

Job

Isaiah

Ezekial

Daniel

Matthew

Jude

2 peter

There are many places in the Bible these things are mentioned.

Thanks Anna, that's how I see it, we have lost so much over the years stating that science is the answer to everything, I do believe there is something out there that can't be explained by science, thanks so much for reading, nell

Interesting hub exploring lots of possibilites. I am like yourself first a sceptic but always a believer. I think we experience a lot of phonomena which can be scientifically explained but also a tiny proportion which can't.

It is that tiny proportion which is perhaps a crossover of our world with other dimensions.

Good debate in your hub and a lot of sense :)

Lybrah then what are your thoughts of the witch of Endor in the Bible conjuring up the ghost of Samuel for Saul?

Nell Rose (author) from England on January 01, 2013:

Thanks for your thoughts on ghosts Lybrah, its a fascinating subject, and maybe one day the truth of it all will be revealed, nell

Lybrah on January 01, 2013:

There are no ghosts. These beings are called familiar spirits/demons. They impersonate the dead and get people believing in something other than what the bible says about death--that we either go to heaven or to hell.

Nell Rose (author) from England on May 17, 2012:

Hi bac, yes I totally agree, I believe in doing the 1,2,3, thing, for example, 1, is there another explanation for what I just saw? 2, possibly imagination or maybe something that can be explained, 3, no, there is nothing else it could be. So I give number 3 a tick, this way I try to be very scientific about it. maybe I talk myself out of some real phenomena this way, but I try to be true to myself, saying that yes I do believe in ghosts! lol!

Anne from Spain on May 17, 2012:

Hi Nell. Another superb hub, I like your style. I agree that the mind is very powerful and can easily trick you into seeing or feeling things that aren´t real. Imagination can easily get the better of you. It´s good to question but there are unexplainable phenomena happening all the time as you know.

Nell Rose (author) from England on May 09, 2012:

Hi Ann, sorry I didn't see your comment, thanks for clarifying that, I must admit its a few years since I read the Bible, and even though I am relgious so many things can be confusing, so thank you, nell

Ann1Az2 from Orange, Texas on May 08, 2012:

Oh no, Nell! That's not what the Bible says! It says no one who is dead knows anything - that's true. But it also says that those in Christ, meaning those who put their faith in Jesus, will be resurrected when he returns. We have a life after death if we are in Christ. When we die, we just sort of go to sleep until Jesus comes back and takes us all up with Him. The ones who have to worry are the ones who are not saved - the ones who haven't accepted Jesus as their savior. That's what the gospel is all about. I just meant that the Bible says the dead do not communicate with the living.

Nell Rose (author) from England on May 08, 2012:

Hi Ann, reading your words it suddenly dawned on me how strange it all is. The Bible says to pray to God, and do His Work, we all live our lives by that code, or at least try to, and yet at the end of the day the Bible states that there is nothing out there after death, so what on earth is the point? if there is nothing, what on earth are we praying for? I never realised it said this in the Bible, thanks for enlightening me, nell

Ann1Az2 from Orange, Texas on May 07, 2012:

The Bible says this: Psalms 115:17 The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.

Psalms 146:4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish

Ecclesiastes 9:5,6 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.

I submit that the spirits people are experiencing are either angels, which do exist or the devil's spirits, which, unfortunately also exist.

Nell Rose (author) from England on May 03, 2012:

Hi Edwinoel, thanks for reading. I like to see all different sides of the story, whether there are ghosts or spirits, or whether it really is another explanation. But yes I do believe in God and the soul, it just wasn't relevant to the hub. I think science is the same as God. the only difference is that God is really there, and scientists are just looking for him, thanks again, nell

Edwinoel Tanglao from Los Angeles, California on May 03, 2012:

Ghosts or no ghosts we have nothing to fear when we have Christ in us. As I can see, you are more of a science believer than of what may be beyond our mind, Nell? No one can blame you for it is in your mind set.

But do you believe that greater things are revealed to you when you try to understand things with your heart and your spirit? Yes, Nell, we have a spirit in us, as we have all been created with a spirit, now in body form in trial and to realize that we all have a mission in this life, to live in God's love for others as we may humble ourselves to God, our Creator. When our body dies, our spirit lives, but amazingly, we have another body, that lives with our spirit by then, and many NDE's or near death experiences have similar accounts, even as they left their human body temporarily in their plight, usually into a bright light, with a few blessed seeing Jesus and their deceased friends or relatives.

In Matthew 10:28, Jesus tells us, "Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul, but rather fear Him (God) who is able to destroy both body and soul (spirit) in hell."

Thank you for sharing your talents in this very interesting hub, Nell. Godspeed as we KJOH.

Hi Jama, yes that's right, there are numerous sightings around battle fields, I believe their aura gets imprinted because of the trauma. The main question I think that most people would like to know is, do these ghosts still believe they are in the battle and have their memories still intact, or is it just a shadow of themselves? Now I want to go and take a look at battlefield ghosts! lol! thanks again, nell

Joanna McKenna from Central Oklahoma on May 01, 2012:

I think what it all boils down to is we don't yet know how much we DON'T know about phenomena like poltergeists or the energy left behind by the dead at sites where they died under traumatic circumstances (like a Civil War battle or a field hospital), or at places that held special meaning for them in life.

Nell Rose (author) from England on May 01, 2012:

Hi Marsei, yes that sounds about right. Poltergeists can be caused by telekenisis, which means that your aura energy sends out this terrific punch and makes something happen, like a book falls out of the bookcase, or a clock falls from the wall, it is fascinating though, isn't it? thanks so much for reading and the vote too.

Nell Rose (author) from England on May 01, 2012:

Thanks Jama, I just think that too many people jump on the 'its a ghost' thing, when maybe it is something else. I quite believe in them, but I do tend to go for the time slip idea the most. Especially as ghosts seem to do the same thing over and over, like walking through a wall, or always appearing on the 19th of the month. But yes you are right, imagine a hundred years ago someone saying that we would have a computer! they would have thought we were mad! lol!

Sue Pratt from New Orleans on May 01, 2012:

Exellent hub, Nell. I always enjoy the things you choose to write about. I had an experience with a ghost or at least a playful spirit. It was strage, not scary. A psychic friend told me that it was a "poltergeist "effect." She said when we are tense and under great stress, things manifest themselves in our environment that represent that stress. Thought it was an interesting idea.

thanks for great hub and voted up

Joanna McKenna from Central Oklahoma on May 01, 2012:

Great hub, Nell! Since you look at it from...forgive the unintentional pun...both sides, and comments are pretty evenly yea and nay, I can't resist tossing in my own take on "Do they or don't they?". Which is, imagine the responses to a similar discussion 100 or 200 years ago had the topic been "Can humans communicate instantly with other humans on the other side of the world?".

Naysayers would've said "No way!" and believers would've said "Of course!" (meaning telepathically). But now we CAN do just that via something called the internet and/or a tiny device called a cell phone.

My point being, I believe "Do ghosts exist?" will be a moot question 100 or 200 years from now. We just don't have the technology yet to prove they DO exist to those who don't believe they do.

I've lost count of the encounters I've had with the dimension known as the Other Side. None were my imagination or an adrenaline surge, or any of the other "explanations" you list in the interest of addressing both sides of the discussion.

Voted up and awesome! ;D

Thanks misty, yes I do believe in ghosts, but I would love to know exactly how and what they are. Do they still have memories of who they are? or are they just phantom energy that is left behind? fascinating to study though, thanks again, and I will be over again shortly, nell

Cindy Lawson from Guernsey (Channel Islands) on April 27, 2012:

Excellent article again. Whether some ghosts are 'recordings' etched into the stones of buildings or others are actual earthbound spirits not ready to leave, I do believe both are real. I just know too many credible/professional people who have experienced seeing ghosts. I suspect one day science will explain how this happens and is possible, but in the meantime I 100% believe they do exist, but that the scientific world cannot yet explain how it is possible.

Daniel Nathan Taylor from United Kingdom, Liverpool on April 12, 2012:

not sure why god would allow ghosts to wander around scaring people :P spiritism is suprisingly modern i think after WW1 people wanted to connect with their loved ones again and that's how it happened...funny how in such a modern age these things still thrive.

Nell Rose (author) from England on February 29, 2012:

@M4rv1n of course it is science, everything is science. We are science, so why not ghosts? I believe everything is connected.

I agree with hecate-horus in the fact that a lot of ghost sightings are just imagination or weird circumstances. But I also believe that anything can and does happen.

Suzanne Sheffield from Mid-Atlantic on February 28, 2012:

As an avid follower of Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, Celebrity Ghost Stories, etc. I am on the quest for the answer myself. I know people personally who have seen the ghost of their dearly departed, but I have not. I have seen something, but I believe most people would say I saw angels in my son's hospital room when he was being treated for leukemia. They were ten-feet tall, transparent, white, glowing, and standing soldier-like beside his bed. This was before I had ever heard of the 10-foot angels written about by Sophie Burnam. I enjoy your hubs.

Hi, hecate, that's sounds like a great job, I would love to be a ghost hunter! but as you say, most of it is imagination, or natural, but one of these days I am sure you are going to find the real thing! thanks for reading, cheers nell

I've been a ghost hunter for 2 years, and from my experience, I found that 99% of ghost sightings are something else (natural phenomena or over-active imagination). I have yet to find that elusive 1%, but I believe it's out there...somewhere. I'll keep hunting until I find it. Great hub!

Hi, Freya, nice to see you, you may well be right, that's the thing with ghosts, who knows exactly what they are? fascinating to hear about the Djinn or Genie, I will have to go and look them up to find out more information, thanks as always, nell

Freya Cesare from Borneo Island, Indonesia on January 27, 2012:

In the end, after those long and complete explanation, your closing turn back to the question: do ghosts really exist?

I do not believe ghost exist. But just like BBudoyono said, there are several being beside human existed in this Earth, called Djinn or Genie, it is I believe similar with what ryokowaren said as Demon, is the true form of ghosts.

Actually Djinn live in another realm but sometimes we stumble into each other or in another time they playing with our mind by showing themselves to human in the form human afraid the most. But different with Mr. BBudoyono believe, I do not believe spirit of deceased person will roaming around the earth and communicate with the living. More likely it is Djinn which took the form of the death and act like one to playing around with human mind. For what purpose? Some said to seduce human to believe other than what the book of God had taught. Other said it was only to have some fun. Maybe we should ask them if one appear in front of us later. :p

Great Hub, Nell. Vote up!

That's funny that you should say that, sparkster, because it always happened when my son was asleep too! I put it down to Telekinesis, when the childs mind sends out his or her aura, a bit like a poltergeist, but its the childs mind that does it, maybe I am wrong but I am a firm believer in that, even so, that was amazing!

I've just remembered another experience I had which I didn't think about last time I commented.

My fiancée had gone away for 5 days and I was up at about 4am on the computer. Suddenly all the kids toys that were piled up in the corner flew across the room, literally they ended up about 7 or 8 feet across the room. It made me jump.

I still have no explanation for it.

I am a believer of ghosts. There has been several things happen in my house. The most recent was just a couple nights ago. I was already in bed as well as my kids. My husband came into the bedroom. He was about to lay down when we both heard the doorknob jiggle. He opened the door and looked to see if it was my oldest son. No one in the hallway than he walked in his room to find him sound asleep.

Hi, lyric, thanks so much! I do watch the ghost programs over here, but some of them are so false its unbelievable! I love the American one though, they make it a science, and its much more believable, thanks as always, nell

Voted up, useful, and interesting Nell. Hope you have been doing well my friend. Great informative article. I believe the question if ghost exist weighs on a lot of us, especially after death or our own experiences. I didn't believe, then I had an encounter. I do believe, 110% in. Does it prove there is a Heaven and Hell? Probably. We are taught to not believe this in society, but taught to believe in it through the Bible. With technology capabilities, we can experiment through ghost. I always watch Ghost Adventures personally. A great show if you haven't seen it. I like how you presented all these theories Nell. This is a great, well researched article. Very well done.

Kitty Fields from Summerland on January 17, 2012:

Wow! Very interesting and quite possible theories, Nell. I truly enjoyed reading this one, for as you know, I am BIG into the paranormal world. I definitely believe in time slips...because as you said time is sort of a man-made thing. Very good points you brought up here. And I also agree with the energy of many people being left behind...but what about the more violent spirits? The things that people call demons? Do you believe in such things?

Voted up and interesting.

Hi, M4rv1n, thanks for reading, yes you could be right, everybody has their own take on it, maybe one day science will explain everything strange that goes on, whether it be all in the mind, or science that we don't know about yet, I appreciate your opinion, thanks nell

M4rv1n on January 16, 2012:

People who think ghosts exist: Just think until you find out they don't. (There's something called science to explain things..)

There is a normal down to earth explanation for everything, and I mean everything...

People believe in ghosts because they don't know enough about physics and the brain to come up with realistic explanations. They don't know enough about all the logic behind everything that happens in the universe, they think of the easiest explanation available: "it was paranormal."

If someone farts and you don't know what a fart is, you could think it was a grated steam train salad that a rock just had for lunch, and the rock was on jupiter 200 years ago, but a ghost carried it to earth and made paranormal things happen, or you could find out sound exists and that sound is a more logical explanation for fart noises.

People don't know about science so they make up their own explanations, which are usually wrong aka paranormal.

When I see the word "paranormal" I read "something you can't explain, because you don't have enough knowledge".

Muldania on January 11, 2012:

I think that you are right in always looking for the rational explanation first. Most of the time, paranormal experiences can be explained by tricks of the mind. And those TV ghosthunt programmes are for entertainment purposes only, and should be taken with a large pinch of salt. And a lot of ghosts are seen at night, due to sleep paralysis. However, most people have either had a paranormal experience or know someone who has. They are usually spontaneous and can't be recreated at will.

I have seen a ghost of the elderly woman who lived in my home before me, but I am still undecided if it was a real experience. I tend to believe it was as a result of sleep paralysis, although the clothes I saw her wearing were recognised by neighbours who knew her. So, I am 50/50 as to whether I believe my own eyes.

Your hub has inspired me to write one about my own experiences.

agusfanani from Indonesia on January 11, 2012:

Hi, poet, thanks so much, I do actually believe that what we see and hear will someday be explained by science, not necessarily in a 'oh that's not a ghost its residule energy' way, but maybe 'yes its a ghost we can prove it' sort of way, either way, science should get involved, because there is so much out there that's not explained, saying that, quantum physics is always looking for other dimensions and time travel, so they are on the right track, incorporating it to involve ghosts and other anomalous phenomena would maybe find the answer a lot quicker, thanks as always, nell

I like how you argue both sides of the topic. I don't know what ghosts are. I do think they exists though most reports of them are false. The time loop/aura scenario is fascinating to me. It makes sense in a way. Energy leaves a trail and energy trapped in a loop would do the same. You have done a great job here! It’s too cool how you have applied current science to such an old topic that to me has to be founded in some truth or it would have died down long ago. God bless!

Hi, DzyM, I was just trying to cover all angles, saying that, I don't for one minute think that all ghost sightings are imagination or hallucination. mainly because a lot of people are not in the situation where they are thinking about ghosts, so there is no reason to imagine them or hallucinate, other times if they are put in the situation and told, watch out for the ghost, then yes its on their mind, but that is only a little amount, I totally agree with seeing ghosts, to many strange things have happened to me over the years! lol!

Nell Rose (author) from England on January 10, 2012:

Hi, mrmaranatha, you may have a point there, its another possibility. I know people have been doing something called Imagine an object until it appears, not sure what it was called! lol! but in a nutshell it means people believe that if you imagine something strongly then that object will appear, so in a small way its a similar thing, or of course it could be Astral Projection but only through time, now there's a thought! as you said! thanks for a fascinating idea, you may well be right!

Hi, Alastar, I don't know about ghosts but I have certainly got gremlins in this darn computer today! lol! took me an hour to sign on! I do believe in ghosts, timeslips and just about all of it, I also have this side of my brain that states that everything can be explained scientifically, it drives me mad! so I try and compromise, I know that ghosts are there, fact! but I try and figure out exactly what they are, I do believe that sometimes they are just ghosts, other times maybe a time slip. I have been psychic all my life, I could write a book about my experiences, but again I question what is and what if, so that I can put each and every experience in order, probably not all right, but it does help me to try and figure it out, thanks as always, nell

My opinion is that there are as great an amount of beings in other realms as there are in this one, and probably as much bio diversity too. That is why I feel that we will never understand exactly what ghosts are. At least we won't in this life.

MrMaranatha from Somewhere in the third world. on January 09, 2012:

I have a private writing that I am working on.. just a bunch of personal notes really... at the moment its 18 or 19 pages of Word document that I keep recording my experiences on, along with everything I can remember or that was observed and or talked about by the other witnesses to the events etc.

So far it is dealing specifically with the Demonic aspects of the Paranormal... (possessions, oppression's, manipulations)

While I do believe that Ghosts exist... I do NOT believe they are the departed souls of dead people...

But your article is about other ideas on the Ghost side of things and I do agree with much of what you have written in this Hub.. there are many things we need to consider... But concerning Ghosts and just ghosts... Ones that are NOT actually Demonic entities.. and I think there may be many different types of situations that fall into a catch all of "Ghost" so.. If it is Ghost and not demon.. then I think we may also have a possibility of a Person being asleep and dreaming something... Maybe Remembering something... The Person doing the dreaming may not be in our own timeline even... or even in our Dimension line... But since they are in the midst of sleep and in the middle of a dream.. they might become visible (their dream avatar would be anyway) and then we see them... as an ethereal looking being doing something strange etc. Just an idea... been mulling it over lately.. I have had some strange dreams from time to time... sometimes as though I am looking through another persons eyes and seeing events that are not in this place or things, places etc that would not be normal for my mind to imagine... Food for thoughts anyway... I think that the 80+ Percent of our minds that we are not normally using on a conscious level.. may be working overtime at thing we have no clue about.. especially when we go to sleep and it takes over.

bruzzbuzz from Texas , USA on January 09, 2012:

I can see everything you have said regarding debunking ghosts but I do think there is some sort of spiritual presence on earth. Maybe it's angels. What do you think about angels?

ryokowaren from USA on January 09, 2012:

Hi Nell,

I personally believe that all ghosts are demons. And a lot of people believe that they hide, waiting for you to come along and scare the crap out of you. Which I also believe.

True story, my childhood home had a demon in it. It would torment me 'cause I knew it was there. It would poke me in the back, move my things around, and do crazy things like turn my lights on and off, and open and close doors. When I got about seventeen, I started learning about demons and what they do to people. I also learned that I could have the house blessed and command them to leave. So, I got a preacher to bless the house. After that, no more issues. Never had an incident or problem again. Ironically, when my dad sold the house later on, a preacher bought it.

Very good, thought provoking hub. As someone who believes in this phenomenon, I like exploring all sides of the argument. I have my own hypothesis after much research. I follow the 2nd law of thermodynamics that engergy can not be created or destroyed.. only transferred. There is very little man knows about this energy. But, you presented many great ideas here. I love the paranormal debate and I hope you read my paranormal interviews with Barry Fitzgerald of GHI. He has many fascinating suggestions from his years of being in the field. I love your work!

Hi, My Minds Eye, No, in fact totally the opposite1 lol! I do believe! I had a really scary ghost experience! I was at my old house, and sitting downstairs watching tv. My husband was upstairs and he suddenly came running down the stairs saying, theres something up there! when I asked what, he said, its a ghost, i can't see it, but things are banging about and moving. So I laughed and said he must be imagining it. Next second, I heard footsteps on the stairs and I looked towards the door, suddenly I felt someone walk past me, and would you believe it! the kitchen door which was pulled right back to the wall, in other words wide open, suddenly pulled right round until it was about a foot wide then with a crash it slammed shut! my husband went pale as a well, ghost and I just sat there stunned! the funny thing was, we didn't know what to do so made a cup of tea, still shaking! ha ha! I kept the light on that night! my son was sleeping upstairs thank goodness! I just like to look at alternatives too, try to see other things it could be, thanks for reading, cheers nell

Bbudoyono on January 09, 2012:

In Indonesia we believe that there are many kinds of invisible being. First they are called iblis or satan. They are made of fire. Then there are jinn, also created from fire. The jinn look very scary. Then angels are created from light. They live in different world but some people can see and talk to them. We believe that the souls of deceased human being live in another world so we cannot communicate with them.

Hi, Jean, I quite believe it, so many strange things do happen, I have been in houses that totally spooked me out because of things that happen, one night I couldn't sleep and all of a sudden I felt someone stroking my head! at that point I was sleeping on my own with no one in the room, for a second it freaked me out, then I thought, well, they are being nice, so I will let them get on with it, to be honest I think it was my mom, thanks for reading, and its nice to see you too! cheers nell

Nell I almost didn't comment on this one. As you maybe know I've experienced several unexplained events in life, the fight or flight response is no stranger here; and after many years the time came to finally write on them. Certainly the things you wrote about in the first half of your well written hub do happen. My research, however, says there are Ley lines or an Earth grid if one prefers that. As an intelligent person you see both sides of the paranormal question which is of course a wise way to approach it. Tack Ms. Nell. I'll finish up by saying dimensions and time slips are highly recommended areas to study for anyone starting out on the subject.:)

Nell Rose (author) from England on January 09, 2012:

Hi, Sparkster, exactly! I agree on the residue 'ghost' and all the other phenomena too, I think there is so much out that we can't explain, some of it ghosts, other things maybe time slips etc, and you never know, maybe other dimensions too, thanks so much, and I am glad you liked it, cheers nell

Maude Keating from Tennessee on January 09, 2012:

I used to live in a haunted house. Believe me the things I heard and saw in that house were not my imagination. Many of the things that happened that house happened in the day time. Plus we weren't told of anything happening in that house so we weren't predisposed to think of ghosts.

I have thought for years that maybe all time happens at once and that could explain some sightings.

Maybe those ghosts in the sewers are there because that is where they died.

Nice Hub from a non-believer - lol
