Demonic Possession - The Case of Anneliese Michel And Werewolf Bill Ramsey.

The term Demonic possession is used in many societies around the world. But what is it? The belief system of many countries and individuals insist that demonic possession is a state of being where the person is controlled or taken over by a malevolent or supernatural being.

The idea is that somehow the soul of the person is pushed out or to one side, and the demon takes over the mind and body. There are many different symptoms of demonic possession, some of which include fainting, fits, and loss of memory. These being some of the milder symptoms.

The lesser seen symptoms of a possessed person are changes in the facial or body structure, speaking a new language that the person was not aware of before the attack, and scratches or bite marks on the body.

Some symptoms are much more violent. Superhuman strength, a change in voice, and horrible smells emanating in the vincinity of the person who is possessed.

There are numerous cases of real life demonic possession. Whether they are for real, or purely psychological is conjecture. The most famous case of demon possession is Anneliese Michel.

Anneliese Michel

Anneliese Michel was a Catholic German woman who is said to have been possessed by demons. Completely disregarding the fact that she had a mental illness she was given an exorcism.

Her story is so well known that the films The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, The Asylum and Anneliese: The Exorcist Tapes were loosely based on her tale.

Anneliese was born on the 21st September 1952 in Leiblfing Bavaria West Germany. When she was sixteen years old she suffered a very sever convulsion and was diagnosed with epilepsy.

She started praying soon afterwards and began to have hallucinations while in the midst of the prayer session. By 1973 she was suffering from depression and said to have started hearing voices telling her that she was " Damned and would rot in Hell"

Long term psychiatric treatment didn't seem to help her, and in her befuddled mind she decided that she must be possessed by a demon or demons. Subsequently this caused her to become 'Alergic' to sacred places, Crosses and other religious Icons.

It took one vicar, Ernst Alt to decide that actually Anneliese wasn't suffering from mental illness but was in fact possessed. He managed to persuade the Bishop that an exorcism should take place to 'cleanse her soul'. Anneliese fate was sealed.

This was the beginning of the end. After months of continuous 'cleansing' by a Father Renz, Anneliese Michel died from malnutrition and dehydration caused by the constant bombardment of the Church and its so called exorcism.

Was she really possessed? It certainly sounds like it from the video. But of course that's exactly what a woman under duress would sound like if she believed she was inhabited by a Demon.

After months of mental torture, and lets face it, that's what the Church and her family did to her, she would definitely not only believe it herself but would be in so much pain and distress this would be the result.

Possession And Belief.

Throughout the Bible and other Religious books we find many mentions of Demonic Possession. Of course back then people had no idea of psychiatry or mental illness. Surely we have come far enough in time and knowledge to realise that possession is not only improbable but unfounded. Prove it I say.

So why do we hold onto these beliefs? The point of science is to prove that what we believed back then is just completely illogical. For example for centuries we believed that gods lived on the top of mountains. And earthquakes were caused by the gods getting angry with the local villagers. But we now know the scientific reasons why this happens. So why do we cling to these archaic ideas about Demons possessing somebody?

Scroll to Continue

I actually have two theories on this. The first being that we have clung on to so many outdated ideas over the centuries that it never dawns on us to clear out our psychi and get rid of the rubble.

And the second idea? Maybe they are right! Who knows what goes on in this big wide Universe, or multiple Universes all depending on what we believe. Who am I to say there is no such thing? I am purely 60-40 against it, but you never know. Lets take the case of Bill Ramsey.

Bill Ramsey The Werewolf of Southend

Bill Ramsey was a quiet man who lived in Southend on Sea England. He worked as a carpenter and was relatively unknown until his story hit the headlines in the 1980s. His story begins when he was nine years old.

He began to feel strange and people would notice his strange behaviour often accompanied by a horrible smell. The first major incident that happened occurred when, in front of his parents he grabbed a post and ripped it out from the concrete it was embedded in.

This soon turned into full blown rages and he believed he was turning into a wolf. He would bite and snap at relatives then go on to have a full blown seizure. Bill managed to control the urges until in 1983 he admitted himself to hospital as he felt that his urges were getting out of control.

When a nurse tried to examine him he attacked her and ran to the corner of the room and proceeded to crouch down and growl like a dog.

The police were called and Bill was taken off to be psychiatric-ally assessed. After keeping him sedated the police released him and he went home.

On the 27th July 1987, Bill began to realise that his condition was getting worse and he took himself off to the local Police station and asked to be locked up. The rage soon overtook him, and during a conversation with the police officer, Bill became filled with rage, and took on the demeanor of a wolf.

Growling and pulling his lip back over his teeth. He grabbed the police officer and threw him across the car park. The police officer in question was over 6ft tall and weighed (14 stone), 196lb. It took over six police officers to subdue and sedate him before putting him in a cell.

This didn't stop his rages, and he continued to snap and growl at the officers, even managing to put his head and arm through the small window on the cell door, trying desperately to grab the officer.

His story went global, and soon he was noticed by Ed and Lorraine Warren, well known demonologists.

He was exorcised in a church ceremony in America, and soon he returned home. Since that time Bill recovered and never had another seizure.

Clinical Lycanthropy Or Demon Possession?

Was Bill really possessed or purely suffering from a mental illness? Clinical Lycanthropy is an actual medical condition that makes people believe that they are being possessed by an animal. Not always a wolf. Believe it or not people have been known to 'transform' into a horse, hyena, cat, bird or tiger. The most bizarre transformations are frogs and bees!

Neurological Factors.

One factor may be that the people who suffer from Clinical Lycanthropy may have changes in parts of their brain. This involves the Body Shaping part. In a neuroimaging study it has been suggested that the areas of their brain are showing unusual activity. This will suggest that when someone actually states he or she is changing shape, they may genuinely believe its really happening.

Bill Ramsey

Demonic possession is something that cannot be completely ruled out in any case. We may live in a modern world and know many scientific answers to the question of mental illness but the underlying fact is that however much we know, there is still so much that is unknown.

In the two cases above we can be sure that these are real clinical illnesses. But maybe out there somewhere in the world there could very well be a real case of demonic possession.

Thanks for your thoughts Annie, and good luck with the book :)

Anna Haun from USA on July 31, 2018:

Hi Neil,

Truly interesting. There are things that can't be explained away. If you believe in God or a higher power then do you believe in Satan can exist? Evil does happen if you take in account of those who murder people, the horrible crimes that happen. Like tonight I was sitting working on my computer and along came the criminal who tried to break in but I warned him to back off so I guess he broke into someone else apartment, that is a form of evil. Evil comes in many different ways. Then you have the Satan worshipers as to what good it does them I don't know but some of them get carried away with it. but really how much is it of mental illness a medical condition. Demonologist some of them think if you say, read, or call upon a demon it could summon them and you could be terrorize or possessed by the demon, and some believe if you watch a show where an demon is being thrown out being done that a demon can attach itself to you thru the electronics. Some Ghost Hunters believe that a ghost can attach to a person and follow them home. Anyway a great article. Maybe when my book comes on the market you might enjoy it, goes to the publisher by next weekend.

As usual, another well written, well researched article. I also appreciate how you include so many links at the end for the benefit of people who want to look further into the topic. The noises from the tape of the girl were really scary. This was my first time, also, to learn about Bill Ramsey. I believe in demon possession, in the same way as when I invited Jesus into my life, I asked him to take charge of my life. However, a person should go through all medical processes and procedures before going for an exorcism, as you pointed out in your article.

Nell Rose (author) from England on February 04, 2014:

Hi savvy, thanks so much for reading, I will definitely go and look for the book, sounds really interesting! I do know about psychic attack and how to protect yourself, I read a book years ago called 'psychic vampires'. It wasn't about vampires exactly, it was how people can somehow sap your strength by just being around you let alone deliberately trying to do something like possession, its a fascinating subject, and thanks again for reading, nell

savvydating on February 04, 2014:

Nell, I do not remember whether I had mentioned this before...about a woman, who was a practicing psychic for 20+ years? She stated in her book that she was attacked by evil. I don't remember if she used the term demons. She seemed, by all accounts, to be a particularly reasonable and intelligent woman. She stated that basically, when engaging in the esoteric arts, it is important to use methods of protection because "light and darkness spill out together" and can attack a vulnerable person. She also stated that children are especially suseptible to being attacked by evil entities as they are more trusting. In any event, she didn't even believe in evil until she was attacked by it. What I'm getting at is that she was not a born-again convert or anything like that. She still practiced her craft, but she practiced it with more care. The book is "Shouting at the Wolf" by Anderson Reed. Perhaps you might find it interesting. I only bring it up because the book deals with possession and all forms of evil as your hub has done, to an extent.

As always, you've given us another fascinating read. Up & Interesting.

Nell Rose (author) from England on October 12, 2013:

Thanks anonymous, that was fascinating reading, I do believe a tot of it is pure psychology, but as I have said before, there is more in heaven and earth and so on, thanks!

anonymous on October 11, 2013:

Demonic possession is controversial. Skeptics say its mental illness. Author Hanz Holzer doesn't believe in demons or devils but does believe in ghosts and believes ghosts could cause hauntings as in The Amityville Haunting in the 1970s. Demons could also be non-human supernatural entities existing on a different dimension and are are able to enter our third dimension. The novel and movie the Exorcist was based on a real case in Washington D.C. in 1949. The possessed was a boy who was meddling with a ouija board. The possessed girl in the Exorcist also was meddling with an ouija board which are claimed to be dangerous and is a doorway to invite demonic entities. The demon or demi-god Pazuzu whose statue is shown in Northern Iraq is only one of countless evil beings. Anneliese-Michel probably was afflicted with serious mental illness and was demonically obsessed rather than demonically possessed in my opinion. There was no supernatural activity such as levitation or speaking in another voice in her case. Just a lot of gross behaviour. She certainly suffered until her death. True demonic possession would be levitation, speaking in another voice, immense strength way beyond the victim's strength, and knowledge of things which the victim could not know. In the Exorcist, the possessed girl has knowledge of the priest's dead mother and in one scene appears to the priest as his mother and with the same exact voice as his mother to confuse the priest. Dabbling in satanic rituals may also lead ro demonic possession as in the 1974 movie Beyond the Door starring Juliet Mills and Richard Johnson who both conduct a satanic ritual. Ten years later, Richard Johnson is suspended in time and must deliver the baby of pregnant Juliet Mills who becomes demon possessed. Juliet Mills throws her husband around the room by telekinesis and in another scene, her two children are terrorized by dolls and toys which come to life. Its implied that demonic activity is making this possible. Demonic possession can happen to people who are into satanism and into the occult and to people who are angry and negative. The Devil and demons are real and people are largely powerless against them. Its scary indeed.

The mind is a very powerful thing and there is so much we do not know about it. Scientist believe consciousness originates in the brain. Once they believe something it is rare they will look elsewhere. If it originates in the brain as they say and they know little about its functions any thing is possible.

I do not doubt there are other species in our vast universe or in different dimensions. I do however doubt that they can control another so easily. For one to experience demons assuming they exist, it has to be done through the mind, solely and completely.

My father always taught me from day dot. Nothing can control you from either there or here unless you let them. (there meaning the other existences) .

Interesting article, Nell. I have never believed in demonic possession, but as you said, that doesn't mean it can't or doesn't exist. This was a fascinating read! Really interesting, and the video's really added to it (especially the scary exorcism... eek!). I am keeping an open mind on this one as I don't think it can be proved either way... I don't know that I believe in demonic possession, Nell, but obviously something is going on with these people. Nell Rose....I've read this hub of yours, which has taken hold of my spirituality and shaken it to bits. I read your hub twice, every word of all the comments and as for the videos....well, I watched not only the ones relative to your hub, but the other choices,as well.

When I came out of my "trance," I think it was well over an hour, I'd been engrossed.

Happy to say, I'm feeling my calm and relaxed self, but can also say that I may be much more of a believer in "possession" than I was before these tales, within your hub. Just the "sounds," alone, that came from Anneliese...(goosebumps up my spine, girlfriend!)....sounded nothing like a human sound at all, even by a great talented actress! And, all due respect, Bill Ramsey looks fairly "weird and wolf-like," as he is.....I wouldn't want to get a look at him as he's attempting to have a police officer for lunch!!

How do I thank you for this education that is sure to cause me a good month's worth of nightmares....and only heaven knows, how many hours of paranoia??? LOL...Oh Nell, must you be such a great writer?

Hello again Nell. You've excelled this time! Interesting stuff, this, but is there anything in it that points conclusively to the supernatural? In Iceland - I read in one of the sagas - someone who died mysteriously or violently would be buried well away from the home they shared with others, UPSIDE DOWN so they couldn't come back and haunt their families. Norse history is full of sorcery and demonic 'possession' and only subsided with the advent of Christianity. Subsided, but didn't go away altogether.

Great Hub, Nell and I like your non-commitment to either side of the story. I think there should be more controlled tests on whether demonic possession behavior is mentally or spiritually generated. Unfortunately most people form their opinions on the subject after watching movies, biased docudramas, or by following religious doctrines. Voted up!

Nell -

Since we've started listening to the "mind experts", our society has gone to hell. They've taught us how to raise children to become self centered, rude, and uncaring individuals, for the most part, in addition to so many wrong things I'd have to write a hub about it. I'm done with them, and all their bs. They think everything can be derived from a black or white format, and are so quick to dismiss the old ways it will make your head spin. Perhaps, our parents and forefathers knew more than we give them credit for. These "ologists" have led us astray so often, I'd rather believe in the "old ways" than any of the new. I dealt with these folks in college who preached theory as a science. They've been unable to prove themselves right, or prove others wrong. To me, that makes them about as worthy of our attention as the trash I toss in the dumpster.

You've provided some interesting possibilities here. Misdiagnosis or reality? Good questions! Perhaps, we're not supposed to know. (Vincent Price laugh here). lol Thoroughly enjoyed your article!

For sure you are left thinking. People really changing? I have never heard of people changing form. This was interesting and really scary. Like Bill suggested,,good Halloween story or reality.

Nell, I was really not sure if I should read this hub but the brave (?) woman that I am, didn't want to miss it. Very sad to know that these people went through hell whether it was their mental illness or demonic possession. Like you I too don't want to think that it is certainly one of the two. It could be either. We cannot categorically state the reason behind such happenings. Frightening though. Great hub Nell.

Cheers, Rema.

A lot of them are examples of mental illness but there are some real cases. I think your second example was probably demonic.

MG Singh from UAE on September 14, 2012:

I have studied this phenomena quite a bit and find demonic possession something very real. In India tantrics resort to this 'capture' of the soul. It is associated with evil and needs an exorcist well versed in Hindu thought to get the person back tp normal.

I was literally holding my breath while reading this, and couldn't bring myself to watch any of the clips. This one hits quite close to home for me as one of my closest friends' brother went through something similar. No superhuman strength, but he was going through a difficult phase in his life. That's when this happened. The family had to get a priest into the house and put crosses up everywhere. I'll never forget what she told me - it was horrific. Luckily, through the support of the church and his family and friends he got through it. Today he is living a good life and is happy with who he is.

Thanks for this hub on a very interesting (and terrifying) topic! Voted up - interesting.

Once again, Nell, you have the little hairs on the back of my neck standing on end. You do certainly have a gift for storytelling. I'll have to revisit from my desk top as the videos won't display on my Kindle and I'm convinced I'm missing something monumental.

Mental illness or possession? That is a quandary. If you believe in God then there must also be a devil. Ugh. I just got those shivers again.

Thanks for sharing! (Right before I head to bed.)

Michelle Liew from Singapore on September 14, 2012:

I watched an exorcism once, Nell and it was so terribly frightening. Being Catholic, it was especially so. Not sure if the lady concerned was faking it, but it was scary. Thanks for a hub on a very interesting topic! Tweeted and shared.

I love how you told these stories! Fascinating. It's so sad to think what these people and those around them went through. Voted a bunch!

Tammy from North Carolina on September 14, 2012:

This is a scary hub for a late night read. This is very chilling, especially the story of Anneliese Michel. I like your skeptical approach. I have seen enough in my lifetime to know that anything is possible. This is outstanding.. and chilling!

Janine Huldie from New York, New York on September 14, 2012:

Nell, I was thinking the same as Bill as far as Halloween and this was truly quite fitting for this time of year. Great article and like how after explaining both cases you left us with food for thought here. Have of course voted, shared and tweeted too!

Larry Fields from Northern California on September 14, 2012:

Hi Nell. I loved your balanced treatment of the demonic possession issue. A lesser writer would have bought into one of the two competing belief systems:

•Neuroscientists know essentially everything that there is to know about abnormal psychology, and the 'experts' say there's no such thing as demonic possession;

•Centuries-old wisdom about these things is inerrant, and should not be questioned.

Voted up and interesting.
