The wealthiest man who ever lived wrote the proverbs. He must've known something! Although the Bible was written millenia ago, its contents actually are applicable and beneficial today. When eternal principals and laws (not talking about the ten commandments when I write "law" here. I am referencing governing systems that are alive, whether we know it or not! I believe Solomon understood these "laws".) are honored, your life will benefit, even if you don't adhere to the Judaeo-Christian beliefs contained in the rest of the Bible.
Unless otherwise noted, all scripture is from the Holman Christian Study Bible; all Hebrew/Greek/Aramaic references are from Strong's Concordance; all English definitions and word roots are according to Merriam-Webster.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. - Proverb 9:10
The foundation to any true knowledge is to acknowledge a Creator. People often scoff at the bible, saying the Bible is unscientific. Part of the reason for this opininion is the practice of reading the Bible horizontally - at face value, and not digging deep. In my hub "Why Bad Things Happen to Good People - The Way I Understand It," I discuss this concept. One of my points is that the Bible does not claim to be the chronicle of ALL things that ever existed. Rather, as all literature, the Bible has a purpose: to explain why the inhabitants of the earth need a Savior, that Savior's prophecies, chronicling the Savior's life, and instruction/guidelines how to live successfully until the Savior's return. (After reading this Proverb 9:10 hub, please visit the hub for further discussion.)
As I had written, the beginning of all knowledge is to acknowledge a Creator. "Scientists" often scoff at the bible, saying it is unscientific. However, the flight of the bumble bee defies the law of physics. I think our Creator, in His Wisdom, created the bumble bee just to show man that there are higher governing laws. When one realizes there is a Creator, the epiphone that humans and all of creation must have a purpose for which they were created.
I attended a field trip with my 1st grader last week. At a science center, we watched a film about insects and bugs. The narrator's constant presentation of evolutionary theory as fact befuddled me. He consistently noted that different species sprouted an organ or morphed body parts in order to adapt. To me, it makes much more sense that these species were designed for those purposes. Especially when every single species mentioned happened to "develop" a special wing, mouth or ability in order to adapt to their habitat. Again, those circumstances are more evidence that these creatures (root word there being "create") were designed to live and thrive in those habitats!
Holistic and alternative medicines are becoming more popular as people discover herbs and natural remedies are powerful preventatives as well as treatments. The herbs were designed to heal and strengthen creation. Wow. It would be easier for me to believe light bulbs could sprout a solar panel for longevityy because so many light bulbs had died than to believe the multitude of anticarinogens, minerals and vitamins found naturally in foods and herbs "evolved" with know intelligent design at the root of their origin.
I believe proof of a Creator is self-evident in creation.
Creator of the Universe and all of its workings,
Evidence of Your design is everywhere - from the symmetry of flowers to history written in the stars. Your world is amazing. You created me. You must have a purpose for me and every person in my life. Help me to see You in the details of life. Help me to understand Your purpose, Your design and plan.
In Jesus' name, amen.

breathtotravel, this is a great proverb. Unless we have a Higher Authority from which to learn, we're pretty much doomed to a self serving life of arrogance. We get to pretend we are god, having the wisdom to know all truths and "create our realities." It sounds nice in theory, but the reality is that someone can believe, for example, that a giraffe is an elephant - that this is their truth, but we are still left with that elephant in the living room who is thinking, "Hmm, last time I checked, I'm still an elephant."
My point is that, in truth, we really don't know as much as we like to think we do. That's why we must turn to our Creator who designed the universe and who said, we (humans) are fearfully and wonderfully made. Ask any scientist, and he will concur with that much, at least. And in all fairness, there are some scientists and scholars who are convinced of God, because they have viewed the evidence...
Anyway, the human body and brain is indeed magnificent - we were created this way, I believe, by an Almighty God. We humans can do many things and create many inventions, but if we were asked to create a rock by speaking the word, it wouldn't happen. Humans have limitations and we do not know all truths. But, through God, we can begin to attain some true wisdom, which is why this proverb is so awesome.
Perhaps one day, if there is a heaven - and I hope there is, we will have much greater capabilities. But even then, I doubt we'll be creating any new galaxies. However, maybe we'll be able to manage a planet!
Thank you for these proverbs. They are inspiring!
