What is DMT?
N, N-Dimethyltryptamine is a chemical substance, and believe it or not, is found in animals and plants. In fact, our own body produces DMT. This article is not about telling people how to extract DMT for use, but more about the effects of DMT as a psychedelic, and what we can learn from DMT.
There are two ways to take DMT. One way is ayahuasca. The ayahuasca brew is used as a spiritual healing medicine in ceremonies among the indigenous people of the Amazon, but I am going to focus on the crystal form of DMT for this article.
Now, DMT in crystal form cannot be ingested like ayahuasca. Instead, it can be injected or you can smoke it. Another difference is, the ayahuasca trip can last for hours, while injecting, or smoking DMT, the trip is very short, and lasts up to 15 minutes. Yes, I know this seems very short, but you have to remember, a DMT trip is intense, and even though the trip duration is short, people tend to lose time when they are on a DMT trip, so 15 minutes, can seem a lot longer.
DMT is not as well known as other psychedelics, but it was made famous by Terence McKenna (November 16, 1946 – April 3, 2000) who was a famous psychonaut and Author. If you do not know much about Terence McKenna, I highly suggest you do some research on McKenna.
What happens on a DMT trip
One thing I will say first, is setting is very important. Make sure you are in a place you feel comfortable, and with someone you trust. When you first inhale, you will notice a slight ringing noise, that will get louder and louder. You will start to see changes to your visuals. Everything will take on a different texture, and you will start seeing geometric patterns that are moving.
After the 2nd inhale, things start to get really strange and confusing. You start to feel that this reality is falling apart. Its like one foot is in this reality, and the other foot, somewhere else. Now, people will say it is very important to inhale a third time if you want to break through. Breaking through basically means smashing through this reality into another, be it another real reality, or one produced in the mind. Once you take that third hit, if you mange to do it, then reality, as you know it, is gone, it does not exist.
Now, when you reach this point, you are on your own journey, and everyone's is different. The DMT trip is anything but predictable. People will visit amazing places, see machinery that makes no sense. Shapes and colours they have never seen before, and intelligent beings that will interact with them. A lot of people feel a connection with everything, and a feeling of love that is overwhelming. Another thing a lot of people say, is they have been there before, that it feels very familier.
Another thing that is very interesting, is the fact that people who have done DMT , report seeing the same beings. Popular beings are Jester like beings, large praying mantis beings, and beings that Terence McKenna called machine elves. One thing is for sure, people who have done DMT, say the worlds they visit, are more real than this one. Most people come out of their experience with a different view of the world, and a connection to everything. It is a very powerful experience that stays with a lot people their whole life.
Terence McKenna and the machine elves
I mentioned briefly about Terence McKenna earlier in this article. He had a DMT trip and met beings he called machine elves. It is quite an amazing story, and just one of thousands of people meeting intelligent beings. Below is part of what he said regarding the machine elves, and the impact they had on him.
There's a whole bunch of entities waiting on the other side, saying "How wonderful that you're here! You come so rarely! We're so delighted to see you!" They're like jewelled self-dribbling basketballs and there are many of them and they come pounding toward you and they will stop in front of you and vibrate, but then they do a very disconcerting thing, which is they jump into your body and then they jump back out again and the whole thing is going on in a high-speed mode where you're being presented with thousands of details per second and you can't get ahold on [them ...] and these things are saying "Don't give in to astonishment", which is exactly what you want to do. You want to go nuts with how crazy this is, and they say "Don't do that. Pay attention to what we're doing". What they're doing is making objects with their voices, singing structures into existence. They offer things to you, saying "Look at this! Look at this!" and as your attention goes towards these objects you realise that what you're being shown is impossible. It's not simply intricate, beautiful and hard to manufacture, it's impossible to make these things.
Dr. Rick Strassman and the spirit molecule
Dr. Strassman is currently Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. He is also President and co-founder of the Cottonwood Research Foundation, which is dedicated to consciousness research.
After many hurdles and delays, he was given the green light to do a major DMT study. Up until then, it was hard to do any study regarding psychedelics, because like other psychedelics, DMT is a class A drug in most countries, so research into psychedelics stopped decades ago because many of these drugs were declared illegal under the UN Convention on Psychotropic Substances of 1971. Also, research stopped because there was no medical value to keep the research going. This was completely wrong because even in the sixties, research was promising and evidence showed that psychedelics could help people with certain mental illnesses.
So, between 1990 and 1995, 60 volunteers joined the research. They were injected with DMT, and their experiences recorded. There is a book about the research called The spirit Molecule. Its a fantastic read, which talks about their experiences in great deal, and also what Dr. Strassman thinks is going on here. Definitely pick up this book if you can.
So whats going on here?
Is this experience all in the mind? Ask a lot of people who have experienced DMT, and they will tell you that it is not. Could DMT be a gateway into another reality? It could be all in the mind, but why are the experiences so alien? Why are the intelligent beings, and the other things you see in DMT reality so different to what you might see in a normal dream? So many questions that we have no answers too, but there are other people doing research into DMT.
Dr Andrew Gallimore is a Computational Neuro-Biologist in England. He believes this reality that we are in, is a lower dimensional slice of a higher dimensional structure. DMT is a technology or tool, that allows us access to reach out to these higher dimensions. Its an interesting theory, and what he wants to do, is give DMT through a drip, so the person will not be under for up to 15 mins, but instead, will be under for hours.
It would make an interesting study for sure, but as of yet, the study has not started. If you want to find out more about the research Dr Gallimore is doing, he has a book where he talks about these higher dimensions, and how DMT is a gateway to these dimensions. The book is called Alien Information Theory: Psychedelic Drug Technologies and the Cosmic Game.
Regarding psychedelics, these are very exciting times. Research is being done all over the world, and the results are very promising. psychedelics could help with things like depression, anxiety, and addiction. But the stigma is still there. People still believe that psychedelics drive you mad, and make your brain bleed. So much fear has been put into people, but that is slowly changing.
You have to ask yourself though, what was the reason for the banning of psychedelics? Was it because they really believed that they had no medical value, and can drive people mad? I do not think so! Maybe the powers that be, do not want people to wake up. They want people to stay conditioned. To work their jobs and watch their favorite shows on TV. Basically, to make sure people stay dumb, and not question anything. But it does seem that people are waking up. Very slowly, but it is happening.
So, all I ask is, keep an open mind, and if you have the time, do some research about psychedelics, and their benefits.
