Charlotte holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology & a Master of Arts in Spiritual Psychology.

Are you a blocked creative?

Does the following sound like you?

You're a creative person.

You want to express yourself by doing what you love.

But you feel stuck when it comes to your creativity. You always intend to get started. But you never seem to be able to get it off the ground.

You're blocked. You feel stuck. And you don’t know why.

This is what could be keeping you stuck:

You could have blocked or unbalanced chakras. Basically, this means that energy is stuck somewhere in your body.

Unresolved issues from your past could be blocking your energy and keeping you immobilized and unable to be the creative being you were meant to be.

Did you know that once you balance and unblock your chakras your creativity can flow?

This is because creativity is spiritual in nature. And creativity heals you at a soul level.

Chakras are energy centers located in your subtle body.

Chakras are energy centers located in your subtle body.

What are Chakras?

Chakras are energy centers located in your subtle body. There are many of these energy centers located throughout your body. However, there are seven main chakras which have traditionally been the focus of healing and balancing.

The seven main chakras are located from the base of your spine to the crown of your head. However, the chakras are not physical. They are subtle energy centers located just in front of your spine. They are spinning vortexes of energy, which can spin in the wrong direction when imbalanced.

Each of the seven chakras is associated with certain emotional, mental, and physical health issues. According to ancient healing methods originating from India, you will have optimal health and well-being when all seven chakras are balanced. If one chakra is out of balance, the whole system will be out of balance.

Chakras usually become unbalanced or blocked due to trauma you experienced at some time in your life. For example, if you were sexually abused during childhood, your second chakra could become unbalanced or blocked as a result because this chakra is associated with sexuality and pleasure.

How Chakras Work

The first, second, and third chakras are the lower chakras. The lower chakras are related to physical matters and the Earthly plane.

The fifth, sixth, and seventh chakras are the upper chakras. These chakras are related to spiritual matters.

The fourth chakra; also known as the heart chakra, is the mediator between the upper and lower chakras. When the heart chakra is healthy and balanced, you are open to the higher levels of awareness associated with the upper chakras. One way of opening the heart chakra is through forgiveness of your self and others.

It is possible to awaken to upper chakra experiences even if the lower chakras are out of balance. However, when you awaken to upper chakra experiences and still have imbalances in the lower chakras, the unresolved issues of the lower chakras will be projected into the upper chakras. The upper chakras will be clouded by the unresolved issues of the lower chakras.

Healing of the chakras is done on an energy level. When you heal and balance your chakras on an inner level, your outer world will change as well.

One way you can help heal your subtle energy system is through the self-awareness gained in traditional psychotherapy. Much healing can take place on an inner level just by having another person (the therapist in this case) who is there for you on a consistent basis, values you as a human being, and validates your experiences.

The Seven Main Chakras

In this article I will discuss the issues associated with each chakra and how an imbalance in any of the chakras can affect your life, and block your creativity.

Symbols and colors associated with each of the seven main chakras.

Symbols and colors associated with each of the seven main chakras.

First/Base Chakra

Color: Red

The first chakra, also known as the base or root chakra, is located at the base of your spine.

The main issue associated with this chakra is survival. The needs of the physical body, such as food, clothing, and shelter, are the main concerns at this level of consciousness.

Survival issues, not surprisingly, are learned when we are children. For example, children from healthy families will learn a different set of rules about survival than children from unhealthy families.

If a child comes from an alcoholic or dysfunctional family, that child’s sense of safety and security will be threatened. This child will learn a different set of rules about survival than will the child who felt safe and secure in their environment.

You need to explore these issues in your childhood to get a better understanding of your current survival issues. This can be accomplished with psychotherapy.

Signs of an imbalance in the root chakra are:

  • Feelings of insecurity
  • Operating out of fear
  • Lack of energy
  • Inability to stand up for yourself
  • Problems holding a steady job
  • Problems keeping a permanent living situation
  • Unresolved issues with your parents

Second/Sacral Chakra

Color: Orange

The second chakra is located in your pelvis area.

The main issue associated with this chakra is pleasure.

When the second chakra has been awakened, you are no longer satisfied with just surviving as you are with the first chakra. Now you want to experience the pleasure life has to offer.

Some of the things you might pursue that give you pleasure are sex, food, chocolate, alcohol, drugs, and so forth. The danger here is that any of these things can become addictive. In fact, this is one sign that the second chakra is unbalanced. That is, being addicted to some substance, food, or behavior.

The sacral chakra is also where you store all your emotions, feelings, and experiences. All of you experiences, both traumatic and pleasurable, are registered in the sacral chakra.

If you have had traumatic experiences, the emotional pain will be stored in the sacral chakra. If the trauma and emotional pain have not been dealt with, this chakra will be imbalanced or blocked. Your ability to enjoy life will be impaired.

It requires a lot of energy to repress or ignore emotional pain.

According to psychoanalytic theory for example, the mental energy required to repress material in the unconscious draws on our available preconscious energy. Therefore, there is less energy available for other activities.

Creativity is also associated with the second chakra. When this chakra is balanced you can be amazingly creative. It’s much easier to create when this chakra is open and balanced because the energy is flowing freely.

Creativity is a way of expressing yourself and is important for your well-being. Without a creative outlet, this chakra could become blocked, and you might end up feeling depressed.

Some signs of an imbalance in the second chakra are:

  • An inability to enjoy life
  • Fear of sexuality and pleasure
  • An unhealthy dependence on other people
  • Addiction to some substance or behavior
  • A lack of affection in childhood

Third/Solar Plexus Chakra

Color: Yellow

The third chakra is located at your naval.

The core issue with this chakra is power. You are dealing with your own personal power at this level, and the ability to define your boundaries. This is where you learn to assert yourself and take a stand for what you believe in. You also learn to use your self-will wisely.

Imbalances in this chakra can stem from both the overuse and underuse of willpower. Some signs of the overuse of willpower are:

  • A strong need to constantly prove yourself
  • Feel that you need to be in control of every situation
  • Constant power conflicts with other people
  • Feel that your anger is justified in every situation.

Some signs of the underuse of willpower are:

  • Inability to stand up for yourself
  • Lack of confidence
  • Low self-esteem
  • Feelings of guilt and shame
  • You are always being taken advantage of
  • Feelings of helplessness
  • Frustrated because of always having to do things you do not really want to do

Fourth/Heart Chakra

Color: Green or Pink

The heart chakra is the center of the chakra system. It is the mediator between the lower three physical chakras and the upper three spiritual chakras. The heart chakra combines the physical and spiritual energies together.

When balanced and open, the heart chakra allows you to pursue the spiritual path, while still being grounded in physical reality. The balance here is essential. If there is too much spiritual energy without being grounded in physical reality; you could become spaced out, lightheaded, or flighty.

On the other hand, if your focus is based solely in physical reality without any regard to spirituality, you could suffer from physical, mental, and emotional breakdowns or exhaustion, as your physical human resources are limited. Whereas spiritual resources are unlimited. An open and balanced heart chakra is essential to your functioning and well-being.

Love is the core issue with the heart chakra. Love at this level is unconditional. With an open-heart chakra, you can love yourself and others unconditionally. You can allow yourself to be who you are and allow others to be who they are without judgment.

Compassion is also awakened with an open-heart chakra. You can feel compassion for yourself and other people. You can even feel compassion for those who have harmed you in the past.

This opens the door to forgiveness. Forgiveness of yourself and others is the key ingredient in healing your life. In fact, the opening of the heart chakra is where the true healing begins.

Some signs of an imbalance in the fourth chakra are:

  • An inability to forgive
  • Anger
  • Resentment
  • Feelings of guilt and shame
  • Bitterness
  • Hostility
  • Critical and judgmental attitude
  • Unhealthy relationships

Fifth/Throat Chakra

Color: Sky Blue

The core issue with the fifth chakra is creativity and self-expression. Self-expression at this level of consciousness is the ability to speak your own personal truth regardless of what others might think. Even if it is contrary to popular opinion.

This is about expressing your true-self and finding your own voice. With a balanced fifth chakra you can hear your inner voice and receive guidance. You are more open to communicating with your Higher Power. An open and balanced fifth chakra allows you to express yourself freely through creativity.

Signs of an imbalance in your fifth chakra are:

  • Being afraid to share your creative works of art with anyone
  • Inability to speak up for yourself
  • Difficulty expressing your thoughts and feelings
  • In severe cases, an inability to express yourself at all
  • Inability to follow your dreams

With an open and balanced throat chakra, you can express yourself freely. Creative expression is essential for your emotional and mental well-being.

Sixth/Third-Eye Chakra

Color: Indigo

The location of the sixth chakra is in the middle of your forehead. The core issue at the level of consciousness is transcendence.

When you have awakened to sixth chakra awareness, you are able to transcend everyday mundane reality, and align with the Collective Unconscious. From this perspective you can view life from all points of view. Not just your own limited point of view. You can see things from a larger perspective.

The sixth chakra is also where you develop your intuition and insight. The use of your imagination is essential here. However, imagination can run wild if it is not combined with some type of spiritual practice.

Practicing meditation is the key in developing your intuition. With meditation you gain insight and clarity of vision. The sixth chakra is also where you use the power of visualization to manifest your desires in the physical world. The power of visualization can be applied to anything. This includes healing illness in your physical body.

Vision problems are one indication of an imbalance in the sixth chakra. If you cannot “see” with clarity through the lens of the third eye chakra, your outer vision will be clouded as well. What takes place on an inner level will manifest in some form on the outer level.

Other signs of an imbalance in this chakra include:

  • Anxiety
  • Paranoia
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Spiritual confusion
  • Mental confusion
  • An inability to evaluate yourself and learn from the experiences of life

Seventh/Crown Chakra

Color: Violet

The seventh chakra is located at the crown of your head.

The core issue at this level of consciousness is spirituality. At this level you are not satisfied with just knowing about spirituality. You want to experience it.

This is where you surrender you will and life to your Higher Power. You surrender. Trusting that the Divine plan for your life is far better than any plan that you alone could imagine.

When you awaken to this level of consciousness, you awaken to your soul’s purpose. You know why you are here and what your path is. When you are following your path, everything in your life will be provided for by the Divine.

Imbalances in the seventh chakra can occur if you follow false teachings or false ideas about spirituality or have been subjected to religious abuse. Religion can also become an addiction, like anything else. When this happens, you are using religion to avoid your feelings and cover up a deep sense of shame.

Imbalances in the seventh chakra can also result in living a separate reality. There is some speculation that those suffering from psychotic disorders are open at the seventh chakra but are not grounded in the lower chakras.

This demonstrates how important it is to have all your chakras balanced. If you are not grounded in the lower chakras, dangerous imbalances can occur in the upper chakras, such as a separation from reality.

Signs of an imbalance in your crown chakra:

  • Rigid religious beliefs
  • Confusion
  • Religious addiction
  • Not aligned with life purpose
  • Difficulty letting go of control
  • Difficulty connecting and interacting with the outside world

Creativity and Healing

At its deepest level, creativity and the healing process go hand in hand. Creativity opens the door to healing yourself. And vice versa. When you do the work to heal yourself, your creativity opens and flows freely.

What issues do you think are blocking your creativity? Which ones jumped out at you? Which chakras do you think you need to work on?

My upcoming articles will walk you through how you can heal and balance each of the seven chakras.

For now…

Be the creative being you were meant to be!
