There are times in the lives of any man or woman when he or she feels the need to withdraw in silence. The trials or experiences of life can sometimes seem too much, as the drain of the adverse forces take their toll. It is then that the Soul feels the need to be alone and to withdraw quietly, in order to replenish itself.

Sleep invariably does this for us, but Meditation is a more conscious method, and if practised regularly, can take us to an infinitely deeper state. I will now attempt to address this need by supplying some necessary tools for such occasions. I will begin with Concentration:

What is Concentration?

Concentration is our ability to focus all our energies upon some object or subject in order to unveil its mysteries. If we are looking at the petal of a flower, we try to feel that nothing else exists in the entire world, but that petal. This we try to pierce with our one-pointed concentration, which comes from our inner will.

Benefits of Concentration.

  • It intensifies our inner will, and harnesses all our energies in one direction.
  • It increases our ability to focus on our multifarious activities.
  • It helps us to control our thoughts and emotions, by making the mind calm and quiet.
  • It clears the way for higher and deeper experiences of peace.

What is Meditation?

Meditation is conscious self-expansion, the recognition or discovery of one’s own true Self. When we meditate, we enter into a calm, vacant, silent mind, in order to commune with a Higher Entity within ourselves. It is like going to the bottom of the sea, where everything is calm and tranquil. On the surface there may be a multitude of waves, but the sea is not affected below.

Aims and Benefits of Meditation.

  • To discover our own inner existence.
  • To attain complete, conscious, and inseparable oneness with our true Source
  • To rise from a low restless consciousness to a much higher and more peaceful consciousness.
  • To transcend our limitations and imperfections.
  • To improve relaxation, thus leading to less anxiety and frustration, and a deeper sense of well being
  • To feel at peace with ourselves and humanity, even while living here in the material world.
  • To discover and tune-in to the wealth of Love within.

Why Meditate?

  • Because of the recognition of our own limitations; the need for a more fulfilling and abiding satisfaction.
  • Because of an inner cry – a burning intensity for more light, something luminous within our selves, the need for peace.



When Should We Meditate?

Whenever we feel able. What is more important is that we meditate daily for at least 5 mins or more depending upon capacity and receptivity. We can meditate each morning when the sun rises and awakens the earth’s consciousness; at noon with the sun at its apex and the world fully active to embody the dynamic power of Nature and Mother Earth.

We can also meditate in the evening as the sun is resting, once we let go of the hustle and bustle of the day’s activities. We can then enter into the peace and tranquillity of the evening, thus leaving behind, all our anxieties, worries and problems.

Where Should we Meditate?

A quiet corner in our house or bedroom. A regular spot creates a positive vibration, and an energy that becomes stronger with every meditation. Distractions such as telephones, T.V and people should be avoided for the period of silence. A regular spot soon becomes a sacred one for establishing a particular consciousness, and enhances the inner quest to find one’s true Self.

Meditating with a group is also useful, as the group creates inspiration, as well as a greater consciousness and energy. The group helps us to draw upon the combined aspiration of others, which in turn feeds and nurture our own meditation. It is useful to join a group of like minded individuals. Do not deviate to other paths as this can hinder progress.

Body Posture

  • Ensure that the spine is upright and that you are sitting comfortably.
  • Enable your arms to rest lightly on the knees, eyes half or fully open but not tense.
  • Ensure loose-fitting clothes, buttons or belts

What Tools do I Need to Meditate?

A shrine or alter is necessary for focus, and will inspire you or remind you of your own inner journey. Include a photo of an ideal: The Christ, Buddha, or a circle and other inspirational preferences of your choice. Burn incense, candles to invoke purity and mood; have a clean white or blue cloth, play soulful music and keep fresh flowers on the Shrine.

It is useful to have a shower or at least wash one’s hands and face a.m before meditation. Keep the breath slow and gentle while expelling restlessness on the exhale, and invoking peace on the ‘in’ breath.

How quickly does Meditation Work?

Every Meditation is beneficial although the experience may come in a quiet or subtle form. Progress depends upon the inner yearning and outer habits. Each sitting enhances progress when it includes correspondent disciplines such as regularity and steadfastness. A nice feeling is generally a sign that progress is being made. Still, while some days may bring a profound sense of peace, others may appear dry or luke-warm. Patience and forbearance are great aids on this journey. Meditation is like building a weak muscle, and will inevitably take time.



Visualisation Exercises

They include vastness such as the sky or ocean; sounds, such as a waterfall, waves, a flowing river, Aum or music. One can also meditate using a picture of one’s ideal, a candle flame or flower. Gentle breathing, particularly while focusing on the tip of the nose, or listening to the heartbeat or watching the rise and fall of the chest can all help to cement the practice. Other abstract forms of visualizations include seeing light, or feeling peace, love, power, or a golden being within the Heart Centre, in the middle of the chest.

Five Key Words in Meditation Practise:

1. Assimilation

This is rather like establishing a life-long friendship with someone who has come into our lives. We need to welcome that person into our hearts and make him/her our beloved friend. Likewise the peace and stillness that we feel during our meditation should also be integrated into our outer existence. We should not talk too soon, or eat or drink for about 15 mins after a particularly deep meditation.

This allows us to absorb the higher forces that have been brought down. When assimilation is complete, people will notice our peacefulness, and for reasons unknown to them, will be drawn to our happiness in a positive way.

2. Purity

Purity is the inner vessel that holds the Light. It is the Light of the Soul, expressing itself in and through the physical. Impurity means doubt, fear, passion, insecurity as well as jealously, greed and a few more. The purer the person, the greater the attraction or receptivity to Light.

3. Receptivity

This is the inflow and outflow of cosmic energy and cosmic love. It is the capacity to hold and absorb the gifts offered during Meditation. The inner Light can enter only according to each one’s receptivity. It can be likened to the sun shining on our windows. The more we open them, the more the sun can come in and we become flooded with light.

One way of increasing one’s receptivity is to become like a child; to have a childlike heart. Another way is to offer gratitude to the Source.

4. Gratitude

This is the self-offering to our highest Self. Gratitude is the life-breath of the Supreme. When we truly love ourselves, our gratitude increases, and our inner vessel begins to expand and becomes enlarged.

5. The Heart

The Heart is the Centre of our Being and the life-boat of the Source. It is full of selfless love and has immediate access to this Source. By meditating on the Heart, it is easier, shorter and safer to access the Soul’s Light. The Heart Centre is in the middle of the chest, and the Centre of our existence. It is spontaneous, childlike, pure, full of empathy and is all-embracing. It is the embodiment of love and Oneness.

Well, I have been here six years. Yes, I started with spiritual articles, then changed to poetry to convey the same message. I have remained faithful to Spirituality, and we have all grown as well.

Nothing stays the same. I am now 33 years with Sri Chinmoy. I add a little humour, Flash and sensuality and deviate occasionally. But I'm essentially a spiritual seeker; a God-Lover.
